NFL Draft 2011, Round 6: Giants Select Jacquian Williams, OLB, South Florida
Maybe Jerry Reese really did realize how badly he needed to bolster the Giants' linebacking corps. after all. The Giants selected South Florida outside linebacker Jacquian Williams with their third sixth-round pick and the 202nd pick overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. Just 17 picks earlier, Reese selected Michigan State's Greg Jones, an inside linebacker. Reese is probably also hoping to strike gold again with another South Florida player to go along with last year's top pick, Jason Pierre-Paul.
Here is some information courtesy of NFL Draft Scout on Williams:
2010 ALL-BIG EAST CONFERENCE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): LB Jacquain Williams, USF, Sr., has been selected All-BIG EAST Second Team for the 2010 college football season as selected by a vote of the league's eight head football coaches. In his first season as a starter at linebacker, Williams, who is also a captain, led the team in tackles with 68 and TFL with 9.5. He picked his game up as the season went on and posted 41 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, an INT and a PBU over the final six games of the regular season.
I'd write more, but the Giants have a seventh-round pick coming. Actually they probably already chose him!

Walterfootball finally gives giants a bad grade
D for this pick……I guess you can’t make everyone happy….lol
First questionable pick
NFL.com and Walterfootball both dont really know much about this guy… nfl didnt have him profiled at all and walter didnt have him being drafted
IRWT
A couple of other football sites didn't have him being drafted also
It’s hard to say a pick in the 6 round is a reach but i would have prefer either Tim Barnes center or Da’Scott rb……..I’m still happy with the first 5 picks.
herzlich
any one linking him to the gmen? worth a 7 round pick?
I'm hoping for
Weslye Saunders, Jake Kirkpatrick, or Shane Bannon (never seen him play, but I like what I hear about him: Wrecking ball of a FB. 6’1" 270)
grade
havent followed much of the critics i think reese is doing well…what are thoughts from the outside?
I've see a LOT of A's and B+'s
WalterFootball has straight A’s up until the Williams pick (D)
Looks like
a quick and intense LB…
Warning: Highlight Video
Given the way Reese has performed so far, he’s got some equity built up.
GO BULLS!!!!
Proudly wearing my JPP jersey as I type… This guy could be great, or could be average… USF is still a young program, he would have to adjust to the competition and that is all on him. He was everywhere on the field. More of a AP type of guy than a ray lewis type.
A Giants -USF connection
We might not know him but the Giants scouts probably saw him while scouting JPP last year and Terrell Mcclain this year.
why does everyone keep talking about walterfootball and their grades?
people should care less about those grades, so what if they gave him a D, they know as little about him as we do.
I like him.
Athleticism appears to be off the charts but I think he is lacking in experience. I’m sure everyone knew who he was and the Giants probably swooped in and took him before the other vultures could. I’m intrigued.

Could surprise and make the roster
but I see practice squad player. Don’t know him so this is speculation on my part.

Dar Rel Scott huh?
not bad I gues

I'm excited about Da'rel Scott
Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hleY7FV8Lhk
Looks fast in this video.
Can catch the ball
potential 3rd down back if he sticks.
That video doesn't show if he has any strength or power.
He has skinny legs for a bigger back though and fumbled 11 times in 3 years.

That's a bit scary
But he could be a good change of pace guy with Jacobs…Fumbles can be fixed, look at AP in minnesota last year (not saying this guy is AP, but he used to fumble a lot more than he does now). Maybe he can put on some weight? idk but we haven’t had a player this fast in a while

Still doesn’t show much power but seems to fall forward a lot.

Da'Rell Scott
A track guy who is a fumbler and injury prone. I don’t expect him to stick.

He's also productive
average yards per carry in his career.
5.4, 5.0, and 5.8 yards per carry.
Lightning speed, can catch the football more of a 20-20 football player and not a short yardage guy, but we don’t need him to be a short yardage guy.

to get one of them, now
isn’t bad.
Speed is a good thing. Its just when you overvalue it that you get in trouble (which we don’t..considering we drafted Greg Jones and Tyler Sash in the 2nd).
…wait…we drafted Greg Jones AND Tyler Sash? In the What???

Yes
Finally….Great pick by the giants and another steal also, specially in the 7 round. This was the only pick that Reese made that was on my mock draft board, just not this late. Grade A
I called Austin, Jones, and Scott
about last month but jus like you i was off with where they’d get taken( well mostly just Jones)

A late 6th rounder won't boost our linebacker corps...

Have to hope we go after Tulloch or Ruud
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ
The 2011 Mets- Rock bottom: We haven't reached it yet
Yes
I think we’re filling needs in Free Agency

Could Jacquain Williams be an in the box safety?
by Robin's-meats-and-vegetables on Apr 30, 2011 6:04 PM EDT reply actions
Exactly
Deon Grant role but mainly big time special teams
by gmen2thebowl on Apr 30, 2011 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions
Reese the BEAST
Williams is going to play the Chad Jones role 6’5 230 4.5, plus it looks like Reese wanted special teamers big time and we got some really solid ones like Tyler Sash
but Da’Rel Scott in the 7th wow!!!Greg Jones in the 6th wow!!!Prince at 19 wow!!!Austin at 52 WOW WOW!!!James Brewer big upside nice value pick!
Ok. I asked Sideline Scouting about Jacuqin Williams
“Thought he’d go undrafted, has some good skills, but undersized. Will be good on special teams and can get in the backfield”
The key here is clearly “Will be good on special teams”
I do remember watching him from USF
JPP piqued my interest in that team, and while he wasn’t on my radar (like it matters) I always noticed Williams on that defense.
He seemed to be the leader of that defense too, so that’s a good thing. I’d actually compare him to Gerris Wilkinson, who was actually pretty good early in his career when he was healthy.
He’s got a large wingspan and is very fast. Special teamer for sure, but I think he’ll be a ‘favorite’ in camp/preseason just like Adrian Tracy was. Hopefuly he doesn’t get hurt.

In that highlights video they showed him play special teams in college. So he knows how to play. I don’t think he would ever play on defense unless theres a lot of injuries.

Jacquain Williams went to the same JUCO as JPP did and then also went to USF as JPP did.
wilddre22: why does everyone bring up Vick like its a given that that’s what EVERY player will do and respond from a prison sentence.
andiamo708: I have no clue... like going to prison is like going to LSU or something….
you know damn well they looked at JPP's JUCO tapes
so given that, and that they played on the same team you can see that when they were looking at JPP they pointed out “hey..who the hell is THIS”?
I remember Williams being that dude that was all over the field for USF. Didn’t really think of him as far as the draft, but I know he can play.
Seems like the Adrian Tracy pick of last year. Just that dude they kept tabs on and felt that there was something there. Hopefully he doesn’t get injured like Tracy.

Coughlin said that special teams was a big emphasis
Their picks bear that out.

yeah i find it ridiculous
how some people actually believe williams and sash are going to be starters. they’re 6th round picks for a reason
I agree with you on Williams
but Sash……Sash is something else. His on the field play definitely didn’t suggest he’s a 6th round special teamer.
I’d have to imagine that Reese, Ross, etc. were all sitting there with their jaws on the floor when he was there for their 6th rounder.
Probably only picked Greg Jones over him considering the “need” aspect. But Sash is definitely not a 6th round player.
