2011 NFL Draft, Round 2: Giants Select Marvin Austin, DT, North Carolina
The New York Giants took North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin [full profile] with the 52nd pick of the 2011 NFL Draft. Austin is a 6-foot-3, 310-pounder with immense talent. He is a "high-risk, high-reward" player.

The pick this kid is going to be a beast as long as he has the right attitude and I believe TC knows how to fix his attitude

I like the pick
I think the LB’s and CB’s get better with better interior linemen. I’m hoping Austin has an attitude and Joseph learns to play. Stops runs and creates pressure on QB’s. Giants “D” was statistically better than what I saw on the field.
I like it too
The Giants will be better off drafting for the defense and getting free agents for the O-line. Once the lockout ends, lots of guys will be available. Better off letting a rookie get his feet wet on defense than defending Eli’s blind side.
well
I thought it wld be Paea but Austin is a beast..we have the leadership to deal with him ! Its a win in my book…Mason foster in the 3rd & I’ll be happy

Peae doesn't get to the passer much - he's very similar to Cofield
We needed a real 3-tech like Austin

nothing
I hate more in a player coming out of college than this kids profile. I’m not familiar at all with him except for reading about him and watching one clip of him. I’ve read many player profiles that said, “questionable work ethic” and the like, but his is the worst I’ve seen. We very well may have the veteran leadership to keep him in line, but, I don’t want players where you have to try so hard. Doesn’t sound like he loves football or hard work. I’m very worried about this kid.
The draft and who we might get has been posted to death and then back to life. I've lost interest in the draft until the day comes....
Trouble
Joseph, Austin, Backflip… Young line that will be trouble for years to come.
Yea Baby
The greatest player ever!!!
you have such a way with words

Wonder if they considered Martez WIlson
It hought they’d consider Wilson there with his speed. I wonder if they did. I’m glad they didn’t reach for an OL like James Brewer or something there.
We ignored OL and LB again

not giving up on Petrus, or Beatty.
Can’t judge draft picks after one or two years. Seriously.
I see Blue, he looks glorious!
i bet last season
some people would have argued against adding to the OL because we had a good, established line. point is you never know. just try to have the best 52 players possible
nothing personal
justing joking about the picking for need concept in general…last year pierre-paul seemed like a luxury, but one or two injuries and we needed him
yeah
because weve done so well with the o linemen we pick up late in the draft every year
I think they will take a LB in free agency
I heard that all of SD’s guys are free agents. They can all work out for us.

I like the pick.....
But, we came in needing OL and LBS.
Where is that?
I think you draft for the future… So I’m cool with these picks!
NFL.com on Austin
Pick Analysis: Jerry Reese doesn’t get enough credit for his willingness to add talent to positions of strength. Austin is a legitimate first-round talent with the potential to be a dominant interior player in their one-gap scheme. His combination of strength, power and athleticism is off the charts, and he should be a terrific contributor as part of a deep defensive line rotation.
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
exactly, another example of BPA
wayy too good of value to pass up at the spot, regardless of positions of need.
Reese said he was going that route before the draft, and he has not disappointed
I see Blue, he looks glorious!
Except for the fact
that he’s lazy and a quitter and might just not like football all that much.

I'm really a fan of what we've done so far
This Defense is gonna do nothing but continue to get better… remember it wasn’t that long ago that the D was very very suspect. Yeah, I know alot of that was due to our coordinator but showing a commitment to making it the strength of the team (the way the Giants should be) makes me a happy camper.
Prove me wrong TC.
agree
our CBs are very good, but have shown lapses. Prince was a no brainer IMO at our #19 spot, wouldn’t have minded even trading up for him.
People forget Austin was a potential #1 overall pick before the whole UNC thing, this guy is a REALLY dominant DT and will be a huge part of our DLine for years to come.

Good value picks
G/C, LB, RB later. Lnival Joseph?
BPA again
I think Jerry wants to look back and say this was a monster draft for the Giants. I like the “swinging for the fences” attitude. This defense could be dominant.
If I’m a free agent LB, I want to sign with the G-Men, ya know? Who is potentially available?
Go Giants!

Revis island? Prince's Kingdom!
Let’s see we have two #1s playing corner & one #2 playing corner. We also have a #1 playing free safety
Now we have three #1s playing corner.
Can’t we find DBs in the 3rd,4th,5th,th rounds??
I mean we have been drafting DBs in the 1st round SO MANY TIMES NOW, it’s ridiculous.
DBs
is one of the positions where the talent drops off a lot after the 2nd/3rd round.
I can find the Raven’s GM saying that somewhere.
Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.
-John Madden
Jeez you can't win them all
We tried to take a tackle prospect, trust me, but the Colts jumped us. We took BPA because we didn’t like the OLine prospects where we were, ok. This is the draft. This is what you do in a draft. Did you want Hudson, a GUARD prospect, in the 2nd round? I could see Wilson, but he’s not a great fit for us. Other than 1 inch of height, Austin fits us perfectly as a 3-tech.
Eli should call up Peyton
And tell him to stop stealing all our tackle prospects.
We weren't going to take a tackle anyway
Beatty will get a chance. Diehl can still play T. So can Andrews.

The Giants clearly did their homework and they feel the risk is worth the reward. Marvin Austin has 1st round talent and if he wasn’t suspended this year I think he would have gone in round 1 … Warren Sapp had character issues including failing his drug test at the combine …. I’m not saying Austin will be that good but he’s got ability and the Giants have veterans on that Dline that can help mentor a kid like Austin. I think he’ll also be motivated himself.

Enough with the name-calling. Everyone has a right to express their opinion. If you don’t want to be disagreed with, keep yours to yourself. If you disagree with someone else’s opinion, express it like an adult — with some class. Otherwise, keep that to yourself, too.
On top of which, always remembers Jerry Reese knows a lot more about this than we do. We don’t have to understand what he’s doing.

Love the pick. Austin fell this far cuz he’s a nip, not cuz of his talent. If Bro’s gone, so be it. But Austin has the potential to be so much better then him (as does Anvil).
So we got 2 BPAs. One high first round talent and another mid-first round talent.

top 10-13 at 19 and first round talent i the second half of the second round,CRAZY VALUUUUUUUE!
While everyone is celebarting over a boom or bust pick, we still dont have a LB or OL drafted, right?
I’d cool it, people here are making austin a bigger deal than he is imo. too much for a risk, damn. im really disappointed, but prince will bring me in a good mood =)
Seems like a better idea then spending a token pick on a LB or OL just to "address" a perceived need
who says any OL wouldn’t be a boom or bust? LB?
All I know is Austin is a better player then those available.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
Martez Wilson and Rodney Hudson were still available dude
austin is the better player but has the higher bust rate
Hudson has a much higher bust rate considering he's tiny
I like Wilson and wouldn’t have been upset with the pick at all. Just not upset with Austin either.
Austin is MUCH safer then Wilson and Hudson, however. MUCH safer.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
And what does that tell you?
It tells you that the Giants did not have either of them graded as highly as they had Austin graded, and that they think they can get players at those positions later. Marvin Austin is a first round talent, Wilson and Hudson are not. Austin might bust, but he might be a 10-time All-Pro. We just have to want and see how it works out.

The Giants are a predominately down-hill power running team. Hudson + Giants would never work anyway.

I’m just pointing out that i’ve seen every game he’s played in and im completely biased pro-fsu and even I acknowledge that Hudson wont fit here.
He’s a great player with fantastic technique and FSU coaches and fans love him but his combine weight is no where near his game weight.
Agreed
I keep saying this. You don’t go into the 2nd round and say “we have to have a center” so you take a center despite the fact there are other players on the board you think are better. It’s not like the Giants will play w/10 guys if they don’t get one.

Let's not get so crazy
that we can’t be objective. And for everyone who is trashing commenters only for disliking the pick…well that’s why people are here — to voice their opinions. Ideally they do it in a civilized manner. Yes Reese knows more than we do, but if we’re just going to assume every move he makes is the right one, just cause he does this professionally, we’re deluding ourselves.
Personally, I trust Reese, and I hope he’s right. But Austin’s game tape is pretty pathetic.
Ok, "pathetic" was too stong, but...
he looks like a great athlete who can’t seem to find the ball much. Although he is double-teamed a fair amount. I REALLY hope he produces!

I agree, people are acting like hes a "10 year all-pro" as it IS
That’s wrong, he has the POTENTIAL to be a 10-year all pro, he doesnt play like that on the field. He shows flashes of it but is inconsistent overall and gets blown off the ball quite often. He’s been a career underachiever who has a history of not bringing it every down on the field.
His suspension isn’t the ONLY thing bad about him
Anyone else noticing
that LBs keep coming off the board, but not the guys we want, guys “ranked” below them? Not saying anything, just noticing….

looks like im going to spend the next few hours arguing about austin
hes not a top 10 talent who got suspended and fell.
no, hes was a potential top 20 talent who has underachieved, played with a poor motor, and is very inconsistent who has proven to be immature off the field combined with bad interivews caused him to get eliminated off boards and fell in the draft.
well even if he's just a top 32 talent
getting him at #52 is pretty good.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows
18-22 year olds generally are inconsistent and immature
we can afford a poor character risk here and there. It’s when you ignore character completely that it becomes a problem.
can you also ignore motor, effort, and inconsistency?
COMBINED with immaturity? I just can’t, i just can’t
correctable problems are worth taking
for his upside. If it doesn’t work out it doesn’t work out, but he could be an all-pro DT. Taking smart risks like this makes sense. If it pays off it pays off bigtime.

I don't always hope for draft picks, but when I do, I prefer Owen Marecic.

Another WR...
Do we only draft positions where we’re already stacked?
That tells you
Maybe they don’t think they are stacked … and maybe they are worried about Steve Smith.

That’s what I said up top… maybe worried about Smith.

He's not 5'9"
185 pounds…
If they didn’t draft him to return kicks, than idk wtf they’re doing.

I get that, but personally, I’d rather not use a 3rd rounder on a return man.

Thanks Jerry. Just keep on pretending O-line and LB don't matter
and the team will keep failing on the field.

yeah,
I was just looking at the similarities, both 5ft 8 receivers, both won’t (and in Sinorice’s case, didn’t) see the field, and both were a waste of a pick
I know
but its just kinda hard to see where the guy fits in. Nicks, Smith (maybe), Manningham, Barden, Cruz. Sure he can be a return specialist, but after the rule changes those aren’t really needed as much, just seems like a wasted pick. Not to mention the guy is 5 ft 8 without the speed that Moss had. What makes you think Coughlin gonna put this guy on the field when he wouldn’t put Moss on?
who the hell is Jerrel jernigan!?
And this was going soooo well. And with Foster and Cannon on the board!!!

WE SHOULD HAVE DRAFTED FOSTER
Extremely pissed. What freaking linebackers in the draft are left? None! Besides herzlich! LOL
they are giving Sintim and Dillard a chance

Sintim's gotten extensive playing time, and has done nothing
We better go after impact LBs in FA

No he hasn't.

Guess it's another year of our D-line having to play out of it's mind
just to hide horrible LB core

ill take herzlich
but rlly foster would of been very nice maybe they will trade up to get one of them……. i like the explosive player though to addd to the offense but idk
Not a fan of this pick at all
Kickoffs moved back so returns might be few and none so He is small and 5ft 9 wtf
Why is Tom Quinn still here?
yup
not terrible but foster i like more but at least its another option for eli and gives us a different look….. will he ever be given time behind our wrs, smith nicks, mannignham, barden and others???
FA
Is where we get an impact LB. JR has already said we will pounce when FA starts, and I guarantee we target a good LB now.
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
then idc
then im fine with not taking a lb we dont need 3 we got boley who is servicebale and goff too behind our d-line we just need 1 more..
It would be nice if we didn't just settle for mediocrity at LB for once
There is no hope.... there is no future....there is only GRISSIONZ

Jerry must REALLY believe in Sintim.....
and Dillard, and Adrian Tracy. Special teams were so bad that perhaps this is an answer that area.
Jernigan
Jernigan is flat-out a playmaker who has the ability to make an immediate impact as a return man at the next level. He has excellent speed to stretch the field and the hip fluidity to maintain momentum in transition and separate out of his breaks. He lacks the size to be a No. 1 receiver in the NFL, but he is a slippery runner in the open field after the catch and projects to be a weapon in the slot. He has a chance to be a second-rounder.
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
Manningham?
sounds like him to me, albeit smaller

Ed, i know you said be respectful, and i am trying, but it seems like someone needs a hall pass, a happy ending…. or something
I don’t have those issues, but if i did, i would know where to find one, go to a bar and find a stress reliever

Wow
Lot of complainers on the board about the giants draft.
Theres a reason we’re not GM’s people. I mean, I don’t individually scout players out so I would never sit there and bash a pick considering I’m sure the management have done their due diligence on each player. Have some faith. There are always quality picks in the 3rd, 4th, 5th rounds. In Reese we trust.
You should've seen her face. It was the exact same look my father gave me when I told him I wanted to be a ventriloquist.
But Seriously....
People are bringing up the 2009 Draft and say that Nicks is the only productive player…. even if i agreed with that statement, which i don’t… What LB would you have the NYG take that was effective with any of our non first round picks….we took Sintim in the 2nd, and i am more than curious who you are mad that we passed up….
I don't see who they passed up, anywhere
Maybe Martez Wilson in the 2nd. Maybe Mason Foster in the 3rd.
More so Foster in the 3rd. But while I like them, not so hung up on in that it needs to be portrayed on who we did pick and what they bring to the team.

I didnt even get to this year...
I wanted to find the logic in the spread of vitriol towards the front office…they do a damn good job year in year out of finding good players for the team… depth is good at most positions… you can’t predict injuries, and even so, the replacements did more than their share… if anything we rushed a few O Linemen back a little too early….

2009 draft was not very good
I’m not seeing many good players that got drafted in the later rounds. Especially not LB’s.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Apr 29, 2011 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
2009 was brutal
Several of the first 100 picks are already out of football. At least Jerry connected with Hakeen Nicks.
Well If SS12
Is not gonna be ready this kid plays the slot and he seems to be a take it to the house kind of guy if you miss the tackle so thats nice if SS12 does come back he still is a great return guy. The Mcluster comparison is encouraging so I will trust Jerry knows a hell of alot more then me so I will concede to the experts on this pick. In short I like This pick book it.
Why is Tom Quinn still here?
thank the football gods we have prince
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.
LOL
according to BSPN, it was more significant that the Bears took Paeua than Giants and Austin
