The Draft is Here!!! The Draft is Here!!!

The Draft is here so I figured i would chime in with my opinion. Here is the 2nd annual official BLUE GATES mock draft, rounds 1-4 for now. Each draft pick comes equipped with audible, just another prospect worthy of being picked at that spot if they were available. I also added a "wish pick" this is just an individual who i don't think will be there at all or maybe doesn't not fit a "need" or maybe considered to high or to low of a pick for that particular spot, or just a player i really really want., you get the point. All feed back is welcomed as usual, negative or positive, either or.......don't forget to take the poll as well. ENJOY!!

With the 18th pick in the 2011 NFL draft the Ney York Giants select:

JUSTIN HOUSTON (GEORGIA) OLB/DE - 6'3. 267 LBS

Before all the boo birds sing, just hear me out, this guy is an athletic pass rusher who was a great player in the best conference in football. Houston is exactly the type of player Jerry Reese has been trying to hit on for years, an impact defensive end type who can successfully transition to a 4-3 Sam linebacker but can also rush the passer. I think he can be an ideal SAM backer in our scheme which changes constantly because Fewell caters it to the strengths of his players, he also has the ability to put his hand in the dirt and provide an adequate pass rush off the D-line. Contrary to popular belief i think Houston also will be fine in pass coverage, he made plays in coverage in college, but of course he will have to work on his technique and recognition but he will be just fine if you ask me. He is a play maker point blank period and at the 18 spot i feel way more comfortable taking him over Akeem Ayers who i also like alot but Justin Houston gets the nod over him in this mock draft. This move also protects us in case Sintim is slow back from his injury, this pick is also not an idictment on sintim, I believe in the kid still and think he will still be a great addition and impact player for us on our run for the ring. Sintim and Houston on the field behind and on our D line at the same time would be awesome. I hear the 4-3 linebacker concerns but i think he is a smart enough study to make the transition but if push comes to shove he can always stay at end and become a force at RE in our D-line rotation for years to come.

to simplify, Justin Houston is a factor, he can be lined up all over the field in any stance so he will be easy to get on the field, he is very instinctive, a good study,  a good leader, a play maker, and he excelled at his competition level which is not an easy thing to do. for these reasons he is my #1 PICK.

AUDIBLE: J.J. WATT (WISCONSIN) DE/ DT- 6'5. 290 LBS     WISH PICK- ALDON SMITH (MISSOURI) DE- 6'4. 263LBS

With the 52nd pick in the 2011 NFL draft the Ney York Giants select:

JIMMY SMITH (COLORADO) CB 6'2. 210 LBS

Character concerns aside, this guy is just as if not more talented a CB as Peterson and Amukamara. The only reason he falls this far potentially is because of off the field and honesty issues, with that being said many people still think he does not make it out of the top 30, which may very well be true. If he does fall however, i dont htink Jerry Reese can afford to pass him up even if it requires moving up a little bit. I liken him to Mario Manningham who was also a top 10-20 talent who fell because of off field problems. This team is built with great character guys especially in the DB room where Smith would be, especially if Deon Grant is retained for another 1yr contract, this kid would be in great hands. My only concern would be making him a rich man in a city like New York but hey if he pans out, he could be in the top CB discussion within a few years.

AUDIBLE: MASON FOSTER- LB 6'1. 245LBS  WISH PICK:  BRUCE CARTER (NORTH CAROLINA) OLB- 6'2. 241LBS

With the 83rd pick in the 2011 NFL draft the Ney York Giants select:

JOSEPH BARKSDALE (LSU) OT 6'5. 325LBS

For all you guys itching to reach for a tackle in round one, i would advise against that, Joseph Barksdale for some strange reason isn't given the respect he deserves in this draft but thats the media for you. He is one of the most technically sound prospects at the OT position in this draft, he is one of the most pro ready lineman in my opinion next to Pouncey and a few others. Barksdale needs to work on his strength but what college prospect doesnt?!. Once again just like my Houston pick was not an indictment of sintim, this pick is not an indictment of William Beatty who i think will be our starting LT for years to come as long as TC stops the veteran love and gives him  a real chance (same for Sintim). Joseph can be groomed for the right side, he has the size and mantality for the power side. A great future replacement for Kareem Mckenzie, Kareem would also be an excellent teacher for this guy.

AUDIBLE: GREG JONES (MICHIGAN STATE) OLB 6'0. 242 LBS  WISH PICK: LEONARD HANKERSON (MIAMI) WR 6'2. 209

With the 114th pick in the 2011 NFL draft the Ney York Giants select:

Virgil Green (Nevada) TE 6'3. 252 LBS

Virgil Green is an athletically gifted TE, he is also a powerful kid who has a great mentality for a TE in the NFL. I know many of you may think he sounds a little like Travis Beckum coming out of college, and he is, but the major difference is i think this kid will become an excellent blocker down the line. I can't say i would say the same for Beckum who has a WR's mentality and approach. Green is a beast in the passing game as dictated by the pistol offense Nevada runs. If Colin Kapernick was'nt such a gifted runner as well as passer, Green would have had way more opportunities to catch, run and score the ball. He simply did not have the opportunities but he still put up good numbers and put enough on tape for me to say i wouldnt hesitate to snatch this kid up in the 3rd or 4th round. I also think he has the work ethic to handle being thrusted into a larger role if Kevin Boss doesn't return.

AUDIBLE: TYLER SASH (IOWA) SS 6'0. 210   WISH PICK: BRANDON FUSCO (SLIPPERY ROCK) C 6'4. 316 LBS

Jimmy Smith at 52?

I don't always hope for draft picks, but when I do, I prefer Owen Marecic.

You yourself said he's unlikely to fall out of the top 30.

So…sorry if I find it questionable.

Woudn’t you raise an eyebrow if someone had a mock where the Giants took Ayers in the second round?

Not really....lets see

James Laurinitis, Rey Malaluga guys like that who didnt even have off the field concerns any where near Jimmy smith…all im saying is dont be too shocked. It is only unlikely because of needy teams who dont really have the space to skip a talent like that, all he needs is one team in the top 30 to take that chance. I also said J.R. might have to trade up, if he makes it past the top 3 in round 2, i would trade up for sure. i dont think we can stay put and get him in the second.

Dez Bryant fell to Dallas

And he was a much better college player with much less serious character issues.

True

It happens all the time, look at the type of college player Mario Manningham was and look where he fell too, he came out the same year as Tedd Ginn ninth overall, need i say more. Anything can happen.

Simply too risky for 1st round money

I bet he falls out of the first round unless it’s to the raiders who need secondary help bad. LOL i see you people clearly dont read just look at picks and names but that’s fine too.

This BS isn’t worth reading anyway….

I agree, and relax lol, dont read. it doesnt bother me.

I actually agree, his off the field issues are not to concrete and i think its all immaturity that will not surface if he is around the right crowd like most players. However, when i made this mock draft, i tried not to think like my self or the average fan in every aspect, i tried to think like an old millionaire/Billionaire who is in the middle of a lockout over money, as well as being an owner or GM or coach in a time where some very high profile players have become problematic and wasted owners money and time when there were previous signs that these things may happen…… Kenny Britt / Aqib Talib….. more now than ever teams are having to be more careful with there investments. The talent is unquestionable but so is the risk, making these decisions on a mock is easy because it doesn’t cost me and you a thing!! but try to think like the person who is investing millions. This is not the early nineties when players did what they want and suffered no real consequences. Now they will lock you up at the drop of a hat, but sorry if i offended you sir LOL.

What Smith did is more of a concern than what Bryant and the UNC players did

Drug/alcohol charges tend to be viewed more seriously than lying to the NCAA. And his attitude about it was not helpful. I’d be surprised if he was on the Giants’ board.

Mario Manningham

Unless the guy comes off as a gangbanger, I think G men take him if they like him, and immediately gethim counseling

by trueblue63 on Apr 26, 2011 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Slightly different

Manningham had great college production, was apologetic and eventually upfront about his actions, and slipped in the draft.

Jimmy Smith, when questioned about his character, basically said “F U”. We’re talking about him as a 1st rounder. As a 3rd rounder like Manningham, hell yeah.

I mean you might as well have Marcel Dareus falling to the Giants

Homer.

Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

by Rorschach44 on Apr 25, 2011 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Nope, why would he fall??

He is the clear and undoubted best player at his position in this draft, Jimmy is very talented but its not like its Jimmy or die at the CB position in the first round or top 10. Also Marcel has no issues, no irresponsibility concerns or immaturity speculations. He is a clean slate and by all accounts has been a great interview……. so no i disagree, its not like Marcel Dareus falling to the 19 spot.

Smith is a top 20 player

he might fall to the mid 20s, but not #52. Maybe you forgot that there’s teams picking from 33 to 51 that would wet their pants IF he was there

by Rorschach44 on Apr 26, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

No i didnt forget

but every team has multiple wants and needs so anything can happen, they would wet there pants if a bunch of players fell between 33-51, its not just jimmy at all but i understand what your saying but things happen….. i also said it would require a trade up.

Looking for one position group is never a good idea in any round

much less the 1st. The only tweener I llike there is J.J. Watt, he is the most NFL ready and will be the most productive of the three long term in my mind. Jimmy Smith more than likely won’t be there at 52 but Kyle Rudolph might be but I doubt that. Mason Foster is a good 2nd round pick but not Bruce Carter. The rest of the mock isn’t my cup o tea but I love draft talk either way. In my mind our OL is golden if we first get Pouncey and then if we get a James Carpenter or Marcus Cannon in the second we have eternal youth and talent at LT, LG, C and RT.

by Robin's-meats-and-vegetables on Apr 25, 2011 10:33 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks for the input Robin's

but i didn’t focus on one position group at all, just the three i picked off my big board in that range of prospects. They are the three i would like for the Giants within that radius. Also i did not pick Pouncey because unlike most people i don’t think the kid makes it anywhere near 19. Most people have him in that range but i honestly see him going to someone before us like Dallas especially or New England if he goes later, just to name a few. I just think he is in every discussion after the 5th pick.

As noted above, unless Jimmy Smith pistol-whips someone this week a la Aqib Talib, he ain’t making it to anywhere even remotely close to 52.

I was thinking we could snag Clay Matthews in one of the later rounds next year, too

I actually think they’ll have to trade up to get him if they want him.

I’m not a big college expert, although I did see my share of Harris at Miami. I think he’s a first rounder. If not, he’d be a steal in the early second. I just think there are just way too many teams that have crappy corners for him to escape the first. People always talk about him against Notre Dame, but that was really only one bad game, and just a play or two that went badly in that game. I think he’ll be a good pro.

I see Peterson, Prince, Smith

ahead of him. And I think those 3 get taken in the 1st round. The early 2nd from pick 1-10 I can see Harris being selected.

I said we would have to move up if he makes it out of 1st round……. if he falls out of the 1st round, we better have a trade in place.

Ayers or

O-line in first. Carimi, Tyron Smith, Pouncey, all I would be ok with. And IMO there will be good value at corner in the second and probably the third. It would be nice if Harris was there at 52. Any chance Bruce Carter lasts that long if we don’t get Ayers? Or Foster?
