NFL Planning Ahead When Making Schedule

I read on BBN that Adam Schefter is reporting that the upcoming 2011 schedule was laid out in a way to allow for the first three weeks of the season to be canceled and still play a 16 game schedule.

The teams that play one another in week 3 all have the same bye week. Giants play the Eagles in week 3. Those teams that should play in week 3 would play each other during the originally schedualed bye week. Week 7 for us and the Eagles. That would mean that if the first 3 games are missed, there would be no bye week for the 2011 season but we would still have a 16 game season with the rest of the season pushed back 2 weeks.

Additionally, the NFL has booked an extra week of hotel rooms at this years Super Bowl city, Indianapolis. So if this scenario plays out, there also would be no bye week between the Conference Championship games and the Super Bowl. Also, the league would push back the Super Bowl by 1 week, allowing said 16 game season.

I think it is good that they have set up the schedule this way to allow for some missed games and still have a full season, but I hate that they had to do it. My hope now is that the courts force the NFL and the NFLPA to go back to using 2010 CBA rules, eliminating the lockout, and teams could sign players, Free Agents, have practices etc. Then they could continue with the court battle and we would have a normal off season leading into a full slate of games ON TIME.
