Bill Parcells 'Done' As NFL Coach ... Tribute Thread
Bill Parcells says he is "done" as a head coach in the NFL. Parcells changes his mind all the time, so who knows whether to believe him or not.
Regardless, let's take him at his word for now. The man won two Super Bowls with the New York Giants and is one of the best coaches in the history of the league. I'm not going to go on and on. Just use this as a Bill Parcells open thread. If the man truly is done coaching, let's give him his due.

Best Coach Ever
My opinion. Father of Belichick. Took multiple teams with different personnel a long ways. The job he did with depleted Jets team was amazing, the throw in 2 rings with us, the Pats in the title game, built the Cowboys personnel then nearly does the same thing with the Fins he did with the Jets?
Sure, guys like Lombardi and Phil Jackson are great when you have the same group of great players for a period of time. But give me the name of a coach that had as much success as Parcells did over such a wide range of teams and players/personnel…..
Totally agree. Next to Lombardi, BEST COACH EVER
The fact that he took FOUR different teams from trash to contenders is simply REMARKABLE. Conference championships and Superbowls, too. Giants, Patriots, Jets and Cowboys. EVERY one of those teams were TOTAL trash when he took over. The patriots and Jets (especially) were laughing stocks of the league for YEARS when he took over. He gave the Jets an identity they’re still riding even now because that’s what started their whole turn around (Vinny, Keyshawn, Wayne Chrebert, Curtis Martin, etc.).
I have never seen a coach take over one terrible team after another and turn them into winners, in ANY sport. Not only that, but do it within 3 years!!! And, correct me if I’m wrong, for the most part he’s done it with with mostly ordinary run-of-the-mill players (only a few HOF players, ZERO HOF QB). Simply amazing!!!
The football team in my school, now they were tough! After they sacked the quarterback they went after his family.

Cowboys fan saying
The Big tuna helped our team for the time he was there. Drafting Demarcus Ware was the highlight. He turned the franchise around until Jones became greedy again with the credit thing and Wade ruined it again.

Wasn't he also responsible for Romo getting his shot?
I don't always hope for draft picks, but when I do, I prefer Owen Marecic.

BALLIN! Is it weird that I miss that?
"Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory."
No
That’s the last time this defense had some swagger to it.

With a spoon, i scooped out some of the juices inside my pimple, and it tasted like chunky vomit.
Let's see if this works

damn no dice.
It’s a couple of coaching trees. Turns out Bill Walsh has a bit more legacy. Still, Parcells is the man.
Here’s the link.

Walsh has been around longer
Give em more time and I think they’ll be comparable

Great coach
1) Loved his candor and handling of the media.
2) Always seemed to be in control.
3) Spawned great coaches.
4) Turn around programs every where he landed.
5) Won Championships.
6) Made men.
7) Helped Jerry Jones to build maybe the greatest Stadium on the planet.
Good luck Bill Parcells.
good eye
He had a good eye for talent & how to use it most of the time…he wasn’t perfect, but who is ? His “Guys” wld die for him…that initself says something about the man he was..I cut my teeth with him so he will always be the best coach in my eyes…
wake me up at draft time..

Ended the Giants 18 year slump
Fantastic football mind. Sure HOFer. Rebuilt so many cellar dwellers in a hurry. Local NJ guy. Already legendary.
He did not
Parecells deserves credit for many meaningful things to the franchise, but Ray Perkins was at the helm in 1981 when they broke the 18-year playoff slump. Parcells was on staff, not sure if he was D-coordinator yet.
Bill is a fine coach, but.....
I can’t stand the way he leaves organization’s hanging without finishing the job. Every time he leaves he screws the organization (not sure about the Cowboys, because Jerry Jones is always on the lookout for the next yes boss coach"
In my opinion Bill was a great coach, but he needed a balance when it came to picking talent. Bill’s SB Victories came with Geroge Young picking the groceries with Bill’s input. Once Bill left he never won the Super Bowl again.

The way he left the Giants was terrible
At 49 he he left his dream job and went on to coach both the Cowboys and the Jets. Just terrible.

Giants didn't pass on BB
Not to be a wet blanket on every other comment here, but the Browns hired Belichick within a week or two of winning the 1990 Super Bowl. So he wasn’t an option when Parcells announced his resignation in May. The timing definitely wasn’t the best, so late in the preseason cycle, and thus we entered the Ray Handley era (who, supposedly, I’ve heard, Parcells favored as a successor over Belichick).
Again Parcells gave the Giant's management the middle finger on that one.
I will always appreciate what Bill did when he coached here, but the way he left the Giants left a sour taste in my mouth. In fact I was actually happy when the Jet’s and Cowboys hired him cause I knew he would end up screwing both organizations.

as far as i'm concerned
allowing your DC to walk is the same as “passing on him” for the HC job.
BUT if you are 100% positive that BB was off to the Browns while the Giants were under the impression that Parcells was staying….than I’ll defer to you.
FIX IT
Parcells didn't inform anybody he was quiting untill right before the draft
Left us in a huge lurch, not only was BB gone but most of the other decent Coaching candidates. Let’s not forget he was about to screw us after 86 and leave for Tampa Bay.

Parcells leaving the Giants
The reason he left was because of the friction that developed between him and George Young. If I remember correctly, he wanted to have more input (control?) in personnel but, of course, that wasn’t gonna happen with GY as the GM. He got that control he wanted when he went over to the Patriots. Regadless, I still have nothing but love for the Tuna and have always cheered for him wherever he went.

The man won tqo championships for us,
which hadn’t happened since 1956. Time to say thank you.
Great coach, keep the person
He was a great coach, has the record to prove it. Got the most from his players. Wish we had him or someone like him now.
His personality, nope. Keep it. Nasty, ego mania laden, sarcastic, don’t like him. And left teams with jobs unfinished. Moody.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
Tom Quinn Must Go!
On second thought, let's not blame players or coaches, they are not responsible. The unsupportive fans are to blame.

He's done
He’s 70 years old. Enough said.
As far as charts go, can’t we say that Ray Perkins spawned Bill Parcells?
I was always upset when he went to Dallas.
But he didnt win anything there so its ok
Die hard Giants fan since wide Right! I was 5...
One of the .......
best ever. As far as I can remember during his time, the Giants never had a super star player, yea we had LT and the defense but no big name QB,RB OR WR but every year he would make magic with what he had to work with.
Greatest coach we ever had...for more than one reason..
He was the consumate motivator, loved his players..His legacy is more than just being the head coach..it was his personality traits and antics with players and media alike that made him so revered by players and fans..What a pisser…Having said that, I doubt the game of football will ever leave his blood..He was quoted down here that he isn’t planning on sitting on his laurals..He said he’d go crazy…We haven’t seen the last of him yet…maybe not on the sidelines but he’ll still be a part of the game..I’m just very happy I had the chance to talk to him at training camp..a truly nice man..Hey Bill !!! I’ll raise a big ’ol Cream cheese bagel in your honor !!

Well said Bobbi
I always thought Walsh was the best coach I ever saw in my time watching football ( I missed Lombardi’s best years). But I wouldn’t have traded Parcells for Walsh as the Giants coach. Parcells was lunchpail, Walsh was white collar. And that made those Super Bowls just a bit sweeter to me. I’ll always take a ferocious defense over a high scoring offense in football. The wins just felt better knowing they physically beat the opponent to a bloody pulp. Here’s to you Bill!
Go Giants!
Equally well said Ron..
You summed Bill Parcells up in one word.. “lunchpail”..a true blooded blue collar coach..

he knew how to handle the all pro's and bench players. and every team he ever went to was
playing like crap,by the time he left they were always contenders.

The Tuna
inventor of Giant Pride. Established the formula for Giants football. 2 time champ. He is the New York Football Giants for a generation. Also the only man who can inspire my dad to go balls to the wall for the Giants and make my dad resemble the below photo.

I hate Philadelphia so much.
maybe
he’d cut half those guys on the first day i think. Which come to think of it..be ok
I hate Philadelphia so much.
Parcells vs Walsh
Its oversimplifying it a bit, and I realize what Walsh gave the game in terms of the WCO and all that but I ask you this:
Would Bill Walsh be as big a genius as he was with personell that weren’t Montana, Rice, Taylor, Cross et al…..
I will give Phil Jackson credit in that he has done what he does TWICE – taken teams with Superstar players and terrific talent and kept them in control to become champions…
But if you look at Parcells body of work, and the fact that he took teams like like the Kotite Jets and the Fins who were absolutely dreadfull with minimal talent, and turned them into real teams – to me, his overall scope of work is more impressive.
And everyone can say what they want about his “style”, I will take Parcells to coach my team any day over the Tony Dungys of the world.
D- Walsh was one of the all time greats
San Fran absolutly Stunk it up before Walsh got there. The reason their personal looked like it did was because those were the types of players he wanted on his team and he built the 49ers from scratch. Just like Parcells did. In fact that’s what made Giant 49er games so great in the 80’s becasue they were two totally diffrent styles of football.
Bill was our coach and I don’t thnk there is a Giant fan out there that would have it any other way but you have to respect Walsh.

I wasn't trying to compare them
just saying it’s interesting to look at coaching trees

That would be a compelling argument if Walsh didn't draft all those guys
And have total control of the organization
But since he was both coach and GM it makes Walsh more impressive
Maybe we can convince him to go all Brett Favre and come out of retirment?
The younger generation would love to see Parcels coach the Giants
Parcells was Brett Farve before Brett Farve
This is the 4th time Parcells has hung them up for good.

Parcells was a great coach BUT
He has to get dinged for the quitting (less risk building crap than maintaining it)
He never built a dynasty, Giants missed playoffs too many times to even think about calling them a dynasty
He didn’t do as much as Noll, Landry, Shula, Walsh, Gibbs has a third ring
Parcells is closer to Madden, another great coach, but as much about the larger than life image than on field accomplishment.
Great coach, but doesn’t compare favorably with the big 5 (Lombardi, Walsh, Noll, Shula, Landry)
+1000
All in all though a great career for Coach Parcells.

He's going to Canton on roller skates!
And I think he was key in first 2 titles
But no greatest all time
