BBV Community Mock Draft 2011: Colts, Eagles Make Second-Round Picks

The next two selections in our Big Blue View Community Mock Draft are in. Those would be the Indianapolis Colts at 53 and the Philadelphia Eagles at 54. Picks are below:

Indianapolis (53rd overall) -- Jon Baldwin, WR, Pittsburgh

A 3 tech would be ideal, but this guy is the best guy left on the board and at a position of need. NFP ranked him 17th overall, and pointed out precise route running as his main flaw- I happen to know a Colts QB who makes no-name receivers into excellent route-runners. With all the injuries sustained last year among the WR corps, getting Baldwin this late in the 2nd is a blessing, and it will give Peyton the type of possession receiver (6-4, 225) he hasn't really enjoyed throughout his career. Baldwin has the speed to develop into a vertical threat as well. -- dannymac56

Philadelphia Eagles (54th overall) -- Marcus Cannon, OT, TCU

The Eagles' two biggest needs going into this draft are corner and help along the right side of the OL. Nate Solder was the pick in Round 1, giving the Eagles a pass blocking specialist at RT to compete with Winston Justice to protect Michael Vick's blindside. Unfortunately, there are no corners worthy of this spot in Round 2. I do see a large handful of corners that would be good picks in Round 3 - Those guys include Davon House, Ras-I Dowling, Curtis Brown, Brandon Burton, Curtis Marsh, Johnny Patrick, etc. So that can wait - I'll take an educated gamble and assume one of those guys will still be there for our next pick.

Historically, Andy Reid has favored strong, mammoth offensive linemen. New OL coach Howard Mudd favors the athletic types. In Marcus Cannon, the Eagles could draft themselves a nice mix of the two. I really tried to talk myself into taking Titus Young here, who along with DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin, LeSean McCoy, and Vick, would make perhaps the fastest offense in the history of the NFL... but Cannon would be the sensible pick, so we're double dipping on the OL. -- JimmyK

My take: I don't care what the Colts defensive needs are, 'dannymac' has done a great job here for Indianapolis. Nabbing Gabe Carimi in Round 1 to protect Peyton Manning and give the Colts a run-blocker, then grabbing a talented target like Baldwin for Manning to throw to. There are character concerns about Baldwin, but Manning is the perfect quarterback to keep him in line.

As for the Eagles' selection of Cannon I know 'Rorsasche' will love this pick since he believes it would have been a good one for the Giants. Amazing to me how often the Eagles and Giants choose from the same small pool of players. Not wanting to give away secrets here, but 'JimmyK' mentioned to me via e-mail that he would also have made the Wisniewski pick for the Giants. Interesting stuff.
