As per Big Blue View the Giants are in some way interested and connected to Nick Fairley, a player guarenteed to be a top 5 pick. So I was wondering why the Giants, who own the 19th pick, would be interested in a player they seemingly have no chance of getting. Then it dawned upon me that Barry Cofield, one of the best DTs in the NFL last year has demanded a trade. It got me thinking, would it be possible to package Cofield and the 19th pick to Carolina, Denver or Buffalo for Nick Fairley? Would Carolina, Buffalo or Denver want to make that trade? Would the Giants want to make that trade? Would I want to make that trade?
As far as Buffalo, Denver and Carolina are concerned, Barry Cofield is a beast...6'4" 305 lbs, he can play inside in the 43 and probally outside in the 34, he had a pretty good year last year with 54 tackles and 4 sacks, and isnt yet old at 27 years. Last years draft the Saints were willing to give their (last pick of the) 2nd round pick for him.
All of the teams picking at the top of the draft have multiple needs which would be easier to fill by trading down.
As far as the Giants are concerned Nick Fairley is a big athletic beast who had 11.5 sacks last year, he would absolutly dominate on a defensive front that featured JPP, Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, Joseph and Canty.
Side note, I would rather trade Canty (in the same type of deal) and give his money to Cofield
