Phil Simms Not Among Top 10 Super Bowl Quarterbacks? Hogwash!
I don't know Doug Farrar of Yahoo! Sports. But I do know he doesn't know what he's talking about when it comes to ranking the top 10 Super Bowl quarterbacks. If you can come up with a top 10 list of the best-performing quarterbacks in Super Bowl history and the list does not have Phil Simms of the New York Giants on it, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.
That, however, is precisely what Farrar has done. He has put together a list of the top 10 quarterbacks in the Super Bowl without Simms, whose 22-of-25 in Super Bowl XXI still might be the gold standard for Super Bowl performances by a quarterback. I am almost annoyed enough to violate all of my own rules for Big Blue View and put one of those 'F' things in front of the word 'stupid' to describe this list. But, rules are rules.
Farrar says his list is about "the greatest Super Bowl performers." Hmmm ...
How does Jim Plunkett get on the list and Simms doesn't? Plunkett's a nice quarterback, he is a nice story and he got two Super Bowl rings with the Oakland Raiders. He didn't do anything special in either game, though, except not throw an interception.
How does Roger Staubach get on the list and Simms doesn't? Staubach had one terrific game, 29-of-43 for 302 yards and three TDs in Super Bowl XIII. He threw threw picks in Super Bowl X, however.
How does Drew Brees get on the list and Simms doesn't? Was Brees 33-for-40 performance for 290 yards and two two TDs better than Simms 22-for-25 for 268 yards and three touchdowns? Just because he threw more passes? Don't think so.
No Ben Roethlisberger? No Doug Williams (340 yards, four TDs in Super Bowl XXII)?
Stupid list.

Truer Words
Yahoo Sports is a festering pit of short articles full of quasi-content that is host to easily the worst community on the Internet. Seriously, the commenters on Yahoo Sports make YouTube trolls look like Carl Sagan. It’s an absolutely filthy community, and the only thing I can thank them for is the original link to Big Blue View. Otherwise though my experience with Yahoo Sports has been horrid.
"yahoo" is the kindest word i can use to describe that place
and not to mention, google chrome says i come here more than yahoo sports, i can believe it

Ass Clown
The correct name for this yahoo at Yahoo. The inclusion of Jim Plunkett and the exclusion of Phil Simms (22 for 25 and 2 of the incompletes drops) shows his list is totally wack. I’ll bet if he were to list the 10 greatest Superbowls, he’d leave the Giants victories over the Bills and Pats off the list.
Quinn must go !!
It's utterly ridiculous.
The only possibility is that he simply made a mistake. By the by, I’m glad you didn’t break your own rule. It would only have opened the floodgates for idiots. I say this as a longtime Phil fan. I met him briefly once in the early ’80s and he was just as cordial as he comes across on TV. Except he was a much bigger man than I had expected.
Tell us how you really feel Ed!
LOL just kidding.
Has this hack even watched any of these Super Bowls?
Isn’t this the same outfit that employs football know it all Tiki Barber?
He probably doesn't watch the Supebowls
but he could tell you about all the good commercials. What a yahoo!
Quinn must go !!
Didn't Phil have the best quarterback rating of all time in the Super Bowl?
Also hard to ignore Namath. It was the 1st time an AFL team took it to the NFL’s best. Namathe was fearless and his leadership gives him the right to one of the top ten spots. in my opinion.

Smoking the kool aid
I am the biggest Simms fan (yes he was great but somehow not my fave, that is my personal stuff).
But you cannot deny his grit, his heart, his work, his play.
The guy is smoking something, it is a list from someone who is either biased or ignorant.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
Tom Quinn Must Go!
On second thought, let's not blame players or coaches, they are not responsible. The unsupportive fans are to blame.
I meant to say
I am NOT the biggest Simms fan but still, this is nonsense.
Still a load of crap.
All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

This is heresy..off with there heads...!!!
and that’ll hurt when their balls get cut off…because that’s where they are thinking from
"When I was a boy and I had no sense..I got my pecker caught in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair, tickled my balls and made me shit in my overalls..."
Bring Frank back..or you all can line up and "Kiss my Ass"..This is bullshit..
I was going to read the list, just so I could make an informed comment
I got as far as #1, and I read “The clutchiest quarterback of all time” and my brain started bleeding.
between reading the Yahoo article and the comments after
I feel like I lost a few brain cells. 7 minutes of my life I will never get back. Thanks a lot Yahoo for that nonsense filled piece of sh*t.

"stupid list"
I laughed out loud
Details of the operations of an interstate dog fighting ring were revealed, with some portions involving drugs and gambling. Gruesome details involving abuse, torture and execution of under-performing dogs ... He admitted to being involved in the destruction of 6–8 dogs, by hanging or drowning...
This list hurts my soul.
Eli Manning should be ahead of Plunkett on any top SB QB lists…

Eli
I didn’t even want to get into that. I can live with him not being on the list. But, Simms? C’mon!
I agree
Bigger fish to fry then Eli not being there

Read some of the comments on Yahoo
At least there are a few, myself included, that question the absence of Simms.
Quinn must go !!
I have no clue
but they literally are a joke…I know b/c I use Yahoo for email and I see the articles every day. The only ones that are any good are when they just link to someone else. Like the other day about Dan Snyder accusing that Washington News Paper of slander…
and if they own SBNation I’m shocked that they never link to them???

Right on.
Yet another rubbish filled “report”…another “writer” who apparently has no clue as to what he speaks of. There are many of those at Yahoo…come to think of it, ‘Yahoo’ and ‘sports’ is an oxymoron in the first place.
And Ed, many would say that if you thought it, that’s the same as doing it.
Quit playing not to lose. Start playing to WIN! Geeez...
Too many times...
I see this go on so often from YAhoo, which is why I cannot take them seriously.. There are plenty of memorable QB’s but Dissing Williams and Simms for Plunk and Brees. That is beyond short sighted.
Here is the reason fellas
Doug Farrar grew up a Bronco fan in Denver, according to his bio. So maybe Phil’s magical day broke little Dougie’s heart as a kid, when Phil brought the Giants back from the first half deficit and destroyed the Broncos that day. His Football Outsider’s Bio specifically says he fell in love with football in 1977 amid all the Broncomania, so he can’t say he missed the game. What a homer and a jerk. Eat it, Doug!
Go Giants!
good point
that also explains why no Doug Williams either, He lit up the Broncos in 87

This list is stupid!
When I read number 10, I knew this list was going to be wack. Drew Brees, after 1 trip to the game. The game where Porter won the game for them. The game that Hank Baskett couldnt come up with the onside kick!
And then having Kurt Warner as number 2 even though he is 1-2 in the Super Bowl. If his numbers matter than Simms almost perfect completion percentage should have mattered. By that logic Antwaan Randle El should be on the list. he does have a perfect completion and a TD.. just saying
Dont take anything too serious that comes out of Shutdown corner
"Franco made that play because he never quit on the play. He kept running, he kept hustling. Good things happen to people who hustle."
UNREAL!!!!
I can believe they JERKED Phil Simms out of TOP 10 list…it just seems like these guys are COWBOYS bandwagoners…I remember watching an episode of Family Feud and the question was: “name the Top 5 Greatest QB’s in the History of the NFL”——they had to NERVE to put Troy Aikman and Roger Staubach at 4 and 5!!! It’s arguable to have Favre @3, joe Namath @2. Montana at 1 was the ONLY answer I agreed with…but, NO John Elway or Dan Marino? Hell, I would put Terry Bradshaw ahead of Aikman and Staubach!!! NOW this?? Next to Steve Young and Joe Montana in Super Bowl performances, Phil Simms is RIGHT there in NUMBERS…completing 88% of passes on the BIGGEST STAGE and a dominating year OVERALL!!! One of the TOP BEST QB performances in NFL history!!! I’m PISSED that Simms hasn’t been inducted into the H.O.F. already!!!
Competition: it pushes us to work harder, to be better, to win!!!!
Wow
I’m not reading the article based on the comments here alone and the general principle. I’m so happy to see Ed this fired up, it takes a lot to get you to borderline cursing, so you know it’s for a good cause. But then again, Shutdown Corner is one of the worst published blogs or whatever you wanna call it that exists. I think ronjohnson probably hit the nail square on the head, can’t get past the haterade. So be it, haters gonna hate. 3 Lombardis is 3 Lombardis and not too many other teams can touch it, so F em, as Ed would say :)
Everyone Hates the Giants
but giant fans…..only player people give respect to is L.T. because he was the greatest lb ever.
Enough with the Yahoo! bashing
First off, Yahoo! is my employer, and it’s extremely insulting reading most of these comments. Second, you’re basing all this anti-Y! talk on one bad article (which I admit is terrible, and I’m actually going to email the writer and complain about Simms being left off). Third, Yahoo! by far has more users than any other sports site on the web, including ESPN….and there’s good reason for it. The best and largest fantasy sports product and content, Rivals.com which covers High School sports better than any site on the web, and solid coverage of just about every sport, amongst other things. In regards to the comments, of course you’re going to get crazy comments! There’s almost 40 million unique users that visit Yahoo! Sports, so what do you expect? Go look at ESPN.com’s comments section and they are just as crazy….if you’re going to those sites for the comments section you’re looking in the wrong place. That’s the beauty of a site like BBV is we’re all fans of the same team, and it’s a much smaller community where we can keep things on topic, have productive dialogue, and sort of get to know each other. That’s not what Yahoo! Sports is intended for.
There, I said it.
Speaking of Phil
maybe he saw the article and decidied to take his anger out on someone else

Not a Giant fan
Obviously Doug Farrar is not a Giant fan. Probably a Cowboy or Philly fan.
It’s hard to be impartial if you’re a fan of another team.
I have watch football for almost 50 years have not seen a better performance
than Simms super bowl game, 2-of-25 he was deadly, just ask the pass defenders in that game.
He was able to ably ride a good o-line and a great RB
while making all the plays he needed to. Very good QB, he has 3 SB rings and should honestly be in there.
