Giants-Cowboys Injury Update: Long List Of Missing For Giants

No real surprises today on the New York Giants' injury report. Nine players did not practice at all, and wide receiver Mario Manningham (knee) and cornerback Prince Amukamara (back) were limited.

The nine who did not practice include David Baas (neck/headaches), Michael Boley (hamstring), Ahmad Bradshaw (foot), Mark Herzlich (ankle), Spencer Paysinger (hamstring), Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), Kenny Phillips (knee), Dave Tollefson (knee) and Osi Umenyiora (knee/ankle).

Head coach Tom Coughlin had no update on Baas, the starting center who has been suffering neck pain and severe headaches. He said that Jacobs and Bradshaw are scheduled to practice on Friday.

Manningham has missed the last two games, but Coughlin sounded optimistic that he could return Sunday.

"He has practiced for two days. He looks good. He looks sharp. He looks quick," Coughlin said. "Hopefully there is no issue the next day. That is what you worry about. The swelling."

Linebacker DeMarcus Ware is listed as not having participated in practice Thursday for the Dallas Cowboys due to a stinger. Blogging The Boys, however, reports that Ware did practice.

Ware has 2 sacks in his last 4 games against the Giants

With Bradshaw there to help out in pass protection, Ware won’t be as big of a threat as we think. The bigger issue is doubling Ware and having to leave McKenzie by himself on the other side.

Yes and no...

Rob Ryan has been moving Ware around a lot. We have to find Ware at the line and call out protections based on his location. Eli will be busy at the line on Sunday.

Ware will get "his"

you almost expect him too.

but w/ the Giants….who knows what Fewell will do, but it’s safe to say that we’ll need a strong showing from our front 4 and an energized healthy Tuck and JPP at DE will need to beast out there.

and hopefully Linval and Canty can get some heat up the middle ta boot.

the biggest issue i see here and the biggest compliment i can make of Romo is that he can keep plays alive w/ his feet…in the pocket. that’s why sending a 5th guy is smart because if one guy gets “through” Romo will often times do just enough to avoid the sack and extend the play another 1 or 2 seconds to free up a WR.

Fewell IMO should be preaching to his Dline to keep Romo in the pocket and just collapse it.

All great points.

Also, Linval and Canty also need to show up to put a damper on Murray. I just hope we don’t see Fewell completely sell out to stop the pass only to get burnt on the ground or vice versa.

what's most confusing about Fewell this year....

is his tampering w/ the Dline.

last year Barry Cofield and Canty practically never came off the field. this year up until last week, Canty and Joseph were constantly coming off the field. What gives?

and look at what the dline did last year? they were taking the ball back from the offense at an alarming rate.

Very interesting angle.

He could be doing more damage than good if he is trying to be too cute with substitutions instead of just putting his best 2 DTs on the field and letting them own the middle of that line.

I've mentioned this as a big reason for the bad run defense

You can’t keep taking your biggest defenders off of the field and expect smaller guys to get the job done.

I think we’ve just about worn that line up out and DC’s have either figured it out or our guys can’t run it effectively right now. Remember when it was one of the most feared line ups in the league when Spags rolled it out? Oops, didn’t mean to bring up the painful memory of better times defensively.

Ware gets a lot of meaningless sacks

He rarely gets a sack when the team most needs it. In the Philly game, I believe he had 4 sacks and you wouldn’t have known it. The Eagles ran screens to his side all day and ate him up.

cruz, petrus, j williams, amukamara, jpp. How much would these guys play if we had hixon, bass, goff, sintim, terrell thomas, osi and a healthy tuck?

I would give up Williams to have Goff back.

I’d love for Thomas not to have gone down. As much as I like Prince I would rather have CWeb and TT on the field as CBs so Rolle could play safety full time.

JPP needs to be on the field at DE all the time.

Why is our defense like swiss cheese against the pass?

A. Our linbackers and defensive backs do not cover receivers effectively
B. Our defensive game plan is lacking
C. The edge goes to the passing offese in today’s NFL
D. All of the above.

by scarlet knight on Dec 8, 2011 7:40 PM EST reply actions

No pressure from front 4

giving the QB all day. That did change with the GB game but Rodgers has been sacked the most this year. And we only got 2 sacks still…

Chemistry

So many lineup changes on the OL. So many different positions being played by novices. A huge reason for the inconsistency. BTW, pass protection hasn’t been that bad, given that EVERYONE knows Eli’s puttin’ it up at a record pace, with lots of downfield routes that take a while to develop.

Thing thing that bothers me the most about the prep for next season is...

TTs injury. I don’t know if they can afford to go into the season with a CB coming off an injury. Remember that was they excuse for Phillips’ performance last year. They were “protecting his knee”. Whatever decisions the front office makes it needs to be swift and definite because they can’t drag their feet hoping that someone will rebound from an injury quickly. Same goes with Goff.

Yeah but...

Don’t you think alot of these decisions would have been alot easier if coaches would have had access to players during the offseason. Kinda hard to judge a player’s fitness when you can’t even talk to him let alone work him out as was the case this offseason. Also, do you junk players in anticipation of hiring their replacement when there is a chance they actually are healed? How many of us where saying in the offseason that we should get rid of Boley? Would you say the same now? Let’s face it, the biggest culprit this year isn’t coaching. It was the lockout and like it or not that falls squarely on the OWNERS.

by nard100 on Dec 9, 2011 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

Snee could be a fluke year.

But McKenzie and Diehl just look finished. They look dead. Maybe it’s an injury thing but yikes they look awful.

A lot of O-line and RB talk

but on Sunday my bigger concern is the defensive side of the ball. Will we press with some man to mix things up, or sit back in that soft zone and let the ’boys run free?

by Dick J on Dec 8, 2011 8:48 PM EST reply actions

If the Oline plays like they did in the loss to Philly then it won't matter how the defense plays.

The Giants have to win every game in which the defense holds their opponent to under 20 points. The defense is a major concern but they should be able to win games by making one more stop than the other guys can manage.

My argument about this season is that the defense and offense haven’t played well during the same game. One week the defense shows up big and the offense falters while other weeks it’s the offense that impresses but the defense is caught sleeping. Both need to show up on Sunday or it’s gonna be ugly.
