Giants' Hakeem Nicks Has Hamstring Strain

There was a surprise addition to the New York Giants' injury list today when coach Tom Coughlin revealed that wide receiver Hakeem Nicks did not practice due to strained hamstring suffered during the victory over the New York Jets. That, as much as the presence of Darrelle Revis, helps explain Nicks' sub-par one-catch game.

"He really didn't have that other gear, which you probably observed," Coughlin said.

The coach said that he dis "optimistic" both Nicks and Mario Manningham (knee) will be ready for Sunday's winner-take-all game against the Dallas Cowboys.

"We have a little bit of time left. I would like to see them both practice," Coughlin said. "That has not been something that has been available all year long. We need that and we certainly need the timing work."

On the positive side, Osi Umenyiora reportedly practiced. That is a surprise after earlier reports this week indicated he would still be unable to go. It will be interesting to see how Umenyiora's ankle, which has caused him to miss four games, responds to the work.

I guess looking into the sun will do that to a hamstring, eh?

But seriously, Nicks HAS to play on Sunday, if nothing else but to draw double teams. Cruz, Manningham, and even Barden can do their job easier.

Barden

I was one of Barden’s biggest boosters but so far what I’ve seen is mostly a guy with no idea about running patterns or getting separation from DBs and he just may be too slow. He does pretty much catch the ball though, when thrown to. Very disappointed in him so far.

you are disappoing with the last game

who isint’? I am, i’m sure Eli is, Ramses is, Hakeem is, etc

but let’s slow down a bit here. And lets’ not let what we rememeber last erase what we’ve already learned.

frankly I don’t think he’s gotten the reps he’s deserved, but IMO when he’s targetted he’s made catches. Not everyone is going to come into the league like Cruz. In fact, the MAJORITY of people don’t come into the league like Cruz. Eli and Ramses gotta work on their chemistry (just like he did w/ NIcks and MM), Ramses gotta work to get off the Line better, the Coaches have to work Ramses into the offense w/ the correct routes and calls.

all the other WRs have been afforded this luxury. i’m not sure why Ramses can’t.

IMO Ham is actually is one of the keys to this game...

…he has simply owned the Cowboys DBs the last two years, demonstrating an ability to step up and make big plays time and time again against Dallas.

Manningham has three straight games with TD receptions of 20+ yards against Dallas, and in four out of his last five dating back to his rookie year when he was seldom targeted.

Everyone’s just gonna have to cross their fingers and hope it works. If somehow Osi does come off the bench and act as the situational pass rusher we all know he is, there most definitely is a football god and he’s come back to our side after the past few years of smiting us for beating his Patriots.

Tommy boy loyalty

This!

I have never seen a coach turn a positive trait into such a liability as TC. His loyalty to players has really hurt us over the years. He’s paid the big bucks to do the hard thing and demote/drop has-beens for the good of the team. Unfortunately, he almost always waits for the offseason to make the change painlessly.

now that Osi is coming back a second time JPP is saying “Good, b/c i’ll be able to get some rest now”

Manning needs a full contingent

This is going to be a shootout – Manning needs all his weapons. Is going to suck if any of Nicks, Manningham, or Ballard is out – realizing that the latter probably is the case. With all those guys and Cruz, that’s a hell of a passing game. Just really sucks not to be at full strength this time of year.

Osi-JPP? Who’s “starting”? Who cares? As long as JPP gets 90% of the snaps.

by boilerdan on Dec 28, 2011 1:28 PM EST reply actions

JPP should get every snap

a healthy osi on pass plays would be nice and then we could put tuck at DT where hes had success in pass rushing scenarios before

no matter whose lined up on the line though they better be getting in romos face, if not it could be a long game

Agreed. JPP also needs some rest, so having Osi back is actually a good thing. Let Osi start for pride, but give 90% of snaps to JPP

I can see the email addresses has been put to good use. I hope Osi isn't really a woman because it would say a lot about...

those players that he out-performed during the 7 games in which he has played. Glad to hear that the strip sack king is practicing. I don’t care if he starts or not the defense should still improve upon his return. if nicks hamstring is really bothering him that much, I would rather that he sits and let it heal. don’t want to make his injury worse than it already is.

Osi's strength is the strip-sack

That means coming from Romo’s blind side (his left) and knocking the ball out. With Romo’s injured hand, he will have trouble holding on to the ball and become more vulnerable to the strip sack. I would put Osi and JPP in the game together and take out Joseph on passing downs.

JPP won the game for us last time against this team

From the spot that some are saying he be moved from in order to get Osi on the field.

I don’t know how else to say this other than to say, I hope Osi can’t go on Sunday.

If he does go, than move him around the line. Try him at Tackle or as a pass rushing OLB, but do not move JPP from that end. It is his strength to have that extra space to work around or under the Tackle, moving him inside is a fireable offense at this point.

Visors

I read somewhere recently that visors are not allowed as standard equipment, the NFL has to give you a special pass to use them if you have something wrong with your eyes. That’s why Vick is the only QB with one, or else you would see them all have it so DBs couldn’t read the eyes.

Constant pressure up the middle

is what we need. It’ll force the RB to make quicker decisions (hopefully into Giants traffic) when they do their cute handoffs, and it’ll keep the QB running around without a sense of security. It has to be steady and swift, though. Wouldn’t hurt to land on that hand a few times in the pile, either.

Dallas WRs were open all day because P.F.

kept trying to “force a square peg in a round hole”…. Not exactly what you want to be doing when you have rookies, second stringers and people playing out of position.

Last game showed me what I have been longing to see. P.F. letting his players play —> thus letting them do what they do best -—> Dictating to the offense what they can or cannot do. Last game gave me hope.

two things

1. KP is back, and as mediocre as I think he is, this allows everyone in the secondary to stay at home in their own positions, with their own assignments. Hopefully limiting the absurd miscommunications.

2. Boley is back, and he solidifies alot of things for this defense, not the least of which is on field playcalling.

these two things have me optimistic.

Hank4910 up here says don’t let Romo outside..The Romo I saw likes to step up in the pocket…He is much more accurate when he does that..He’s actually less accurate when he rolls out..with McMurray out I am more confident about the outcome especially if we play defense like we did last game..If Fewell turns our defense loose..They will wreak all kinds of havoc..Given this is a all or nothing match, I still see a nailbiter..but Romo’s hand can’t possibly be 100% by Sunday..I think we’ll win the game.

love this guy, glad he’s on our team, think he’s one of the best WR’s in the game. But the excuses gotta stop…the sun got in his eyes, he was mugged by Revis, his hammy tightened up. There’s no excuses in the NFL

not about revis, or his hammy, but when asked he said he lost the ball in the sun….so i think excuse is fair, but not excuseS

Effing typical of this team

“All in” they say . . . oh well wait I cant practice. By Friday Tuck and MM will be sitting while Romo gets healthier and healthier.

All In my freaking ass, this is going to be another disaster Sunday night.

All in guys I’m all in. what a joke.

If they start Osi over JPP they should fire TC on the spot. Osi at his best is not as good as JPP that would be a freaking crime if they did that.

Too many people on the Giants ban wagon

to feel good about this one. Now this shit with the injuries.

Like another poster said, no Ballard, No Nicks, No MM, no playoffs.

We do one thing well. Big pass plays down the field. Thats it. If our top guy is out as is or #2b along with our TE it’ll be a long night.

WTF, every team has injuries be we’re the one team that just can’t adjust it kills us.

by Landeta on Dec 28, 2011 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

no no no!!

you got it all wrong… its not that we cant adjust… its that we are the only team where injuries deplete a whole position. Cant adjust because we dont have anymore players! lol

Giants are young, and injured... and loosing.

by Skii31 on Dec 28, 2011 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Very true

I think I’m just fustrated.

CB has been killed and now without Nicks Ballard and MM our WR/TE are desimated and we’ve adjusted ok with our O-line or as best as we could.

Though when Boley went down at LB we could not adjust at all.

by Landeta on Dec 28, 2011 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

I remember being like you

earlier this season. Just like how the heck can we overcome this kind of stuff…

first the CB’s and then the LBzzzz .. now the WRzzz… I like to think if we only lost 1 or 2 impact guys like the Saints and Packers, I envision us starting this game with David Carr at Qb and watching at AB ad BJake in street clothes as D. Scott tears up the field.

But I give credit to the coaches and management. I would have totally understood if this game meant nothing… The fact that it means everything. I am left saying “why not.. why the heck not” sure we got a chance.. No Nicks, No MM, No Ballard… Why not?? we arent even supposed to be here in the first place.

Giants are young, and injured... and loosing.

Skii you are a posative guy

I’ll say this if the Jets lose and are out of it, I’ll probabbly look at this game the way you do. I know thats stupid casue the Jets mean nothing to us.

Dream team went bust, Jets hopefully go bust. Knowing I can actually enjoy the NFL playoffs for the first time since 07 will just be nice.

I hate Dallas but not the way I hate Philly and They’ll lose in round 1 anyway so I’m not worried.

If we win this ball game I agree with you this will be one of my favorite teams. Just becasue of what expectations were and how things unfolded.

lol, no matter what happens win or loose on sun. you cannot deny that you werent on the edge of your seat, with all your attention on the moment. This team has now rewarded me more times than not, with screams of “oh my!!! WE DID IT!”

The youth movement was something that was needed. Seeing the fight in our team was a sight for sore eyes… When the games got tough, we hung right in there (cept for the saints game) That is what I love about this team. the vets started to quit. the rookies wouldnt let them..

What I am trying to say, is that, say they win the superbowl. where was i? I was right here enjoying it the whole way. If we dont, it was never supposed to happen anyways. Look at the only two other teams with worse injuries that us.. Rams and the Jags… and look at us. not back at them… happily we arent them. lol

I love this team. If win on Sunday, it wont be our last win of the season.

Mathias Kiwanuka is a true believer. Believe that.

He’s not sold on the fact that last week’s 60-minute effort in the win over the Jets was an a mirage, a mere departure from a season of defensive malaise.

He believes it can carry over to this week’s winner-take-all game against Dallas Sunday night. More than that, he believes the Giants could well hold the Cowboys to zero points.

“If we play a complete game from beginning to end,” Kiwanuka told the media Wednesday, “we’ll pitch a shutout.”

I calculate a 0.13% chance of a mistake-free game by the defense, so Kiwi’s hypothetical is a valid, if fairly irrelevant, analysis of an extremely unlikely scenario.

I do think it will be our D that wins it

D is healthier, it should be a cold night and tougher for passing, Eli is cold, our receivers hurt and Romo is hurt.

by scarlet knight on Dec 28, 2011 7:18 PM EST reply actions

Yeah I agree..

It December…Defense and running will be a key to winning this game..Romo plays in a semi-dome..and the roof has been open both games I went there..but there is hardly any wind in that stadium..The Meadowlands is different..that why I asked about the weather forecast..I don’t think Romo will fare too well if it is typical December weather up there…But then I got to thinking that Eli doesn’t handle wind very good either..So, I really think it will be crucial to have a solid rushing attack and a solid Defense..They only have Sammy Morris..If we play defense like we saw Saturday we’ll win this game….

I remember seeing Carlos Emmons – who if I remember correctly was awesome linebacker for the Eagles.. bite on a reverse, loose contain and just stand there, albert haynesworth style, as the play went 27 yards to the sideline. That was the play I lost all faith in our defense. Our players had just flat out quit.

Tom Coughlins press conference went this way… “we had guys there to make the play… I just know what to tell you”

Regardless of what happens, No playoffs, playoffs, no superblow, superblow.... The 2011/2012 is one of my favorite Giants Teams of all time.

True, but so are a lot of WRs

Miles Austin, Dez, Maclin, D-Jax, they all miss a few games per season. Nicks definitely has a history with those nagging leg strains, but as long as he plays through it I don’t see it as a huge issue.

one year obviously does not a durable player make

I know the NY fan likes to be shortsided, but other receivers on this team have played in full seasons or close to it before, yet their durability’s questioned after this season.
