It has been more than a month since that jubilant post-game locker room celebration after the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots, and with four straight losses prior to Sunday night the Giants had had nothing to celebrate. After Sunday's wild -- and critical -- 37-34 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, though, Tom Coughlin finally held a post-game press conference with a smile on his face.
Coughlin said the victory "puts us back on track to accomplish everything that we set out to in the very beginning," It gives us a win at a time we really needed a win."
The 37-34 victory, of course, puts the Giants back on top in the NFC East. Both the Giants and Cowboys are 7-6, but the victory gives the Giants the tie-breaker edge.
"Proud of the way we battled," said Coughlin. "It wasn't easy, obviously. There's plays out there that you just shake your head, but they [the Cowboys] had a few of those, too."
"When we threw the interception on the screen it didn't look very good," Coughlin said.
The Cowboys capitalized on the turnover to score a touchdown and push their lead to 12 points, 34-22, with 5:52 left. From there, the Giants simply did what they have done again and again this season -- ride the right arm of Manning to a late victory.
"We have a great quarterback," running back Brandon Jacobs said. "If you ask me he's the best in the business when our backs are against the wall and we need a score. He's never let me down.
"I believe in him. I believe in our offense, I believe in our coaches and they got it done."
Coughlin also praised Manning.
"He was really upset over the interception, but he comes right back," Coughlin said. "He comes right back and takes the field and away we go. He obviously made some great plays coming down the stretch."
As is his style, Manning was matter-of-fact after the game about the comeback.
"That's [the comeback] what we expected to do and that's what we did," Manning said. "I don't think I ever feel pressure when I'm playing football,. I try to make plays ... It's exciting, it's fun."
This is the third straight time the Giants have won in the new Cowboys Stadium.
"We've found ways to win. We've had some wild games here over the years and none wilder than this one," Manning said. "Great job by our guys."
Coughlin, of course, also had praise for Jason Pierre-Paul after Paul saved the victory with a blocked field goal and was the best defensive player on the field -- for either team -- Sunday night.
"He is something else. He's got a great motor and he keeps going and keeps going," Coughlin said. "Early on in the game I was wondering 'where the heck is he?' and he comes back and makes plays like that.."
