So, how would YOU use Chad Jones?
With Chad Jones' potential return drawing nearer, and with him (by all accounts) not just rehabbing, but training with a new level of fire and intensity, how would YOU use him?
According to the latest story on him from NJ.com, Jones' is sitting at 238lbs, squatting 400lbs for reps, and doubling his bench press reps. Its safe to say that he's rebuilt the strength that made him a terrifying hitter at LSU. He's also working feverishly to rebuild the speed, quickness, and agility that made scouts say he had the potential to be the best safety in his class, which included Eric Berry and Earl Thomas.
His trainer is will be asking the Giants if he should add 5lbs for the LB position, or drop 15 for Safety.
So, its time to put on your DC cap.
Myself, personally, I'd tell him to drop weight down to 225-230 and use him in the Deon Grant S/LB hybrid role. He's got to be quicker than Grant is NOW let alone come July/August. as well, I'd want to take some weight off to ease the pressure on his leg.

When he was perfectly healthy, I think his 40 time was 4.5
I’m not sure if he makes it back there. Ideally we can hope for him to get back to around a 4.6. Stay at his weight, around 238-240….and become our hard hitting, speedy 3rd LB in our big nickel packages.
I support the Giants like bras support Kim Kardashian's boobs. It can be a struggle, we've had some jiggles, but we're still firm.

Put him a LB
If he’s regaining speed and quickness he should gain some more weight and be a LB. We need a speedy guy at LB that can put some big hits on players when we need him to.
As a safety

Good post but it only makes me angry.
being as we have no hard hitters ….
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.
Giant LB'zz SUCK!! Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones,Jacquian Williams,Paysinger...Maybe not..
Def as a safety
He is coming back after 2 years and a horrific injury. No need to add learning a new position to the obstacles.

Yep.
Secondary, 2012:
C-Web, Terrell Thomas, Prince Amukamara, Aaron Ross
Antrel Rolle, Kenny Phillips, Chad Jones.
Tyler Sash and Coe behind those guys.
Damn fine secondary.

Thomas is a free agent ,no? or is it Ross? well one will be out the door..
Insert Tryon in that spot.

I think TT is up, but we should be able to resign him cheap, right?

TT will be cheap
Probably be a 1 yr deal for little, or maybe 2 like Kiwi. Ross, you never know. All it takes is one team to like him, and decent corners are hard to come by.
"Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue."
The key for Jones will be his fluidity
Pre injury, he’s super smooth, can he still turn and run, can he still shift and change direction
I’d still take him at Safety, but I could see him easily as a LB. he was bigger than some of the LBs that the Giants has when he was drafted. Not sure if he could play in traffic as well as a LB needs too.
It’s already a wrap… might as well not show up tomorrow.

SEPT 25 - Giants 29 - Eagles 16
if PF remains our DC after this yr I say He turns into a LB
His value as a coverage LB would be invaluable.

i think he could do the same type of coverage as a safety
depending on the scheme

Let him play in Deon Grant’s spot. He’s a perfect fit.
"Mr. Madison, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
like the masses have said
Jones was built for Grant’s role.
Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.
-John Madden
[Jake Ballard] has 4 speeds actually:
Stop→Slow→Truck (he shifts into that when its time to carry 4 defenders for another 4 yards)→LEAP!
-Raptor 22
I'd love for our nickel back end to be
DL: JPP – Joseph – Tuck – Kiwi
LB: Jacquain – Chad Jones – Boley
Secondary: Cweb – Rolle – KP – Ross/TT

safety
we got a log jam at LB as is.
If the kid gets healthy maybe he can light a fire under Kenny “late to the party” Phillips’ ass.
You down wit JPP?
I got 99 problems but a Vick ain't one!
Depends how much speed he gets back
If he’s fast enough for safety that would be great, if not he can transition to LB.

Jones should stay at safety
He should be a role player. I want a return of seeing safeties lined up on receiving TEs. I remember 2-3 years back we had a game where Aaron Rouse was placed in off man coverage of Witten all game. Witten would run 5-10 yards, break right or left, and Rouse would break on the ball/man. Witten finished with a bunch of useless catches.
Better than our current plan of place LB on Witten, watch as he beats coverage to sideline (see 3 of the last 4 Cowboys TDs against us).

I'm so stoked about Chad Jones making a comeback!
I was really excited when we drafted him, and have been keeping up with his rehab, hoping it will all turn out well for him. As it appears he has been doing GREAT, I would keep him in the safety spot, but as the Sfty/Lbck hybrid. There is absolutely nothing wrong with have versitile players on your team (see KIWI for example). I also think the giants will draft another safety, or CB in the draft to add to the talent pool there (not early, 3-5 round). No matter who the DC is next year they will want to have Chad Jones on the feild!
He was drafted to play the S/LB hybrid nickel LB being played by Grant/JWill currently
If Fewell is still the DC when and if this kid gets fully healthy I’d expect that would be where he would end up competing. You have to figure Grant is pretty much done, so he would be competing with JWill. JWill isn’t exactly polished, so Jones “changing positions” wouldn’t really put him behind as much as just missing years of football. That role under Fewell is basically an in the box safety anyways usually given coverage responsibilities.
If we get a real DC I’m not sure where they’d use the kid. If 238 is a heathy playing weight he could still get some looks as a Will, but he’d need to learn more traditional linebacker because a real Dc is going to expect more balance out of that position.
Great article in Newsday yesterday about Jones' road to recovery
but I don’t have a link as I refuse to pay for Newsday online.
Jones ran a 4.8 40 in October. He ran a 4.5 in the combine. That’s a fairly large difference, but it is known that he is not back to full strength. If he can return to 4.6/4.5 territory, then I say play him at Safety. Let him learn slowly behind Rolle and KP, contribute as a role player (ideally on passing downs he could come in as a 3rd safety) and allow him to adjust to the NFL at a reasonable pace.
If he CAN’T cut down his 40 time and return to his previous speed, I’d say bulk up and either put him in the Hybrid LB-S in Fewell’s D OR play him at LB if Fewell is gone (which I believe he will be). 4.8 speed for a Safety could make him a liability in coverage, and we want to play to his strengths.
That being said, I’m hoping the surgeries left him with a bionic leg and he runs a 4.0 40 his next time out.
