Ask A Saints Fan

Hello Giants fans!  Grumps from Canal Street Chronicles here.

Saints fans owe you an apology as we are apparently all a little slow in posting this over here.  Bye week boredom will do that to you.

Your very own Willgfass was kind enough to start something similar over on CSC and we have been bombarding him and a few other G-Men fans with questions (and of course some good natured trash talking).  Well it finally dawned on us that since maybe not all Big Blue fans cared to mosey over to CSC, that maybe we should post something similar up here.

Feel free to ask anything you care to about the Saints, make predictions for the game, or trash talk as you see fit.

Someone will be around to answer your questions.

Happy thanksgiving to all who celebrate it tomorrow, and here is to an exciting game where nobody from either team ends up on IR (way to much of that lately it seems).

The only way I see

a Giants win is if your boys can’t contain our pass rush and the Giants put Drew on his back on a regular basis. Just how bad are you tackles, and do they do better against speed rushers or bull rushers?

I don’t think they gave up a sack vs. ATL, and if not, are they improving?

What player that I may not know much about on the Saints offense, and defense, should I keep an eye on? Speaking of eyes, my ability to trash talk with you guys all but disappeared when I read the news that our weakest link just got weaker as our best Olineman, LT Will Beatty, will have surgery to repair a detached retina tomorrow. Sigh…

Also, what scares you the most about the Giants offense? Or the defense?

Player you don’t know to keep an eye on for defense is Jonathan Casillas and for offense is either of our FBs. Our punter, Thomas Morstead is top of the line, too.

Not quite that bad. The discussion centers on whether all those picks are really Drew BREEESSS!!!‘s fault. He has pinpoint accuracy. Unfortunately, the margin of error is often a gnat’s ass, so he gets picked off.

Actually the Saints making it into the post season is very much in question. When a game up on the Falcons…the difference being the Saints have 5 tough games left on the schedule…the Falcons have 1 tough game against the Saints and 5 they should be able to sleep through.

What do you guys see from Mark Ingrahm and Martez Wilson?

There were many here on BBV who wanted both those guys. I liked Wilson in the second round to the Giants myself.

Mark Ingram was so highly touted that a condition called INGRAMANIA!!! occurred on CSC. Some national writer summed it up pretty well, using 10 games of hindsight: He’s good, but he’s not great.

We have some big Martez Wilson fans. They should probably have their medication adjusted. I for one am not impressed.

He's got a house in the country, and a big sports car.

by stujo4 on Nov 23, 2011 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Do you feel Ingram was worth a first round pick?

I saw a guy who I thought could consistently get positive yards but was not a big play threat. In other words, good not great as you described. I didn’t feel he was a first round talent and a lot of people here killed me for it.

by G-FANinFL on Nov 24, 2011 1:00 AM EST up reply actions

Personally

I think it is to early to tell. But I am leaning towards yes as I see long term value.

We have come somewhat full circle from last year where our RB’s were getting injured so much we were signing guys off the street (look at our RB’s for that playoff game against Seattle – barf). We currently have a good roster of RB’s with diverse skill sets, allowing Payton to use them all with varied effectiveness. I think Ingram will be more of a Deuce like player in the long term. Our N to S bruiser who can hit the holes and move a pile but still break off some good runs. Granted we have a version of that in Chris Ivory, but unfortunately, his ability to stay healthy with that kind of running style has not been great.

Since I seem to have danced around the issue a bit, personally, I think Ingram will be great for the Saints and was worth the move up. But why wear him out if you don’t have to.

Colston as primary.
Sproles and Lance Moore as second or third options. Sproles has surprised all of us with how quick he is or seems to be (since he’s so short) and he also can run it up the middle. Lance Moore catches nearly everything and talks a lot of smiling trash about it afterwards. I think he’s underrated and overlooked. Hopefully he’ll score so you can watch him do his thing on the endzone dance floor.

He's got a house in the country, and a big sports car.

by stujo4 on Nov 23, 2011 7:41 PM EST up reply actions

Agree with Stujo on all points

Personally I have found it somewhat maddening how much Brees seems to just focus on Colston, Sproles and Graham. There have been a few times where I feel he is forcing the ball to those three when there are better options available to him. That being said, what do I know.

I really do love Lance Moore’s ability. You need a crisp route run to pick up needed yards, Lance is your guy. When called upon he is such a clutch receiver for us.

(I’m just going to keep commenting here until one of my more distinguished colleagues takes over) The Portuguese kid is pretty ordinary. Which is good, he can’t be screwing up too much because no one says much about him. Kreutz was an enormous disappointment. He sucked on the field and then quit. Some admired him for being honest but I resent him for bringing his personal and professional issues to town. He would have continued to play badly, but they told him the kid was going to start and Kreutz would be benched, so THEN he quit. F****** Bears. At least Alex Brown played out the year.

Brees does not come out of games, generally. Even blowouts. I don’t think Chase has taken a snap at all this year.

Mickey Loomis is a pretty smart guy, but he rolled the dice and lost on Kreutz. Tennant has been a surprise, since the Portuguese kid beat him out for the starter’s job too. It’s a mystery, since the Saints don’t talk much out of school. You never know what’s going on until way after the fact.

I would have given Kreutz credit if he bailed prior to the season, did it before the bye week, etc. But not bailing just a few days prior to the game. That is bad form no matter how you slice it. If it was due to physical injury then I would accept it no questions asked. Unfortunately, the only thing injured was his pride.

HA! Have you been over to our thread yet?

Right here. That word “elite” triggers some strong emotions. He’s got that ring on his finger and that means a lot. To me, any way. I think Eli is a smart QB and I think he can be great. But Brees is something else. Tremendous competitor, unparalleled work ethic. I believe he actually has improved his arm strength since last year, he’s throwing farther down field. And I am viewed as a Brees critic among my peers at CSC.

I’ll say this: If Brees incurred a career ending injury and Eli was a free agent, I would have no problem with the Saints picking him up.

IMO

I think Eli is in the upper echelons of QB play and moving in the right direction. At this point I don’t consider him an elite QB yet.

Call me on my Homerism, but I think Brees has long since solidified his spot in the elite QB group. He has been so consistent for so long now its incredible to me. Yes picks are high, and while I won’t clear him of all of them, it is amazing how many of them are a result of tipped/bobbled passes by his WR’s as opposed to outright brain fart throws. He is so good at throwing that ball into tight space that I think sometimes even he forgets that his WR’s might have a tough time getting their hands on some of those throws cleanly.

Too many people expect him to be Peyton and it aint happening,no one is Peyton except Peyton he is in a class of his own
I believe he is much better then Phillip Rivers who he also seems to be linked to alot since the draft
He has led your team to a superbowl win against a 18-0 team who everyone thought was the best team of all time

by mississippisaintsfan on Nov 25, 2011 9:42 AM EST up reply actions

Elite? No. He’s not quite on Brees’ level. But realistically I only consider about 3 QBs elite in Brady, Brees and Rogers. Eli is a top QB. I just think elite gets thrown around a bit too much. As far as I’m concerned he’s a legitimate top 10 QB that probably hovers around 7-8 on the NFL depth chart. Nothing wrong with that….nothing wrong at all.

Reggie Bush was magical at times with the Saints and I liked him a lot, still do. But the injuries took their toll. A lot of guys don’t like him and claimed to never have liked him. Sproles is so short (5’ 6") that he does not lean over in the huddle. Seriously, he stands straight up. He looks different then he did as a Charger somehow, probably in the way that Payton uses him. We are universally impressed with his performance and most of us are happy for Reggie because of what he’s been doing lately with the Dolphins.

From what I recall of the Rams game, they had Brees uncomfortable all game. Taking away the screen pass and short crossing route plays. Eliminate Graham, Sproles and PT or Lance from the picture and Brees may start to force some throws.

Brees, to me, seems to force more throws when we are losing. Against the Rams, Drew tried to get some points on the board after a turnover resulted in the Rams going up 10-0. Forced his throw and whammo, 17-0.

We were in the game against GreenBay it was a shoot out and we had a chance to tie it from the 1 yard line on the last play
The Rams ran rampid on us Steven Jackson is a beast and we couldnt stop them or their defensive ends
The Bucs game was a game we should have won but they were able to run on us more then they should have
But most important those games were on the road this game is in our dome and we seem to be a much different team their

Agreed.

That dome is intimidating when you are on offense. So I think it is equally, if not more important, to sustain drives and finish with TD’s. Keep that crowd who has had all day to “get their cocktail on” sitting down.

And here is where the Giants get in trouble. We are so poor at running the ball that we are often in third and very long. And it is hard to convert several third and longs every game. And third and long gets the home crowd as worked up as almost anything, making it that much harder to convert said third and longs.

Sigh…

will send in a lot of three man rushes negating our advantage. JPP, one of the leaders in sacks is often playing a different position at DT which also hurts. He’s still raw and the perfect way to hone his skills is by playing DT. Tuck has did nothing all season due to nagging injuries. With him getting two more injuries he might not even play. Osi is on and off. Our line hasn’t been impressive for the past month.

This is the type of team the Giants pass rush can actually do serious damage against.

Well J-Man.

I hope that the Saints O-line comes to play. As Stu has mentioned, they usually do pretty well keeping Brees protected. I think after that Rams game they were really annoyed with how abused and rushed Brees was. They did a 180 after that. Hopefully that solid play continues. I am hoping Brees will be able to stay on his feet all day.

Looking at your sig line, still a Denver fan first and foremost? Are you a fan of Tebow?

Actually rushing 3 and dropping back 8 is about the best thing to do again Brees. You don’t want to blitz him, you want to get to him with 3 and 4 man rushes and cloud the throwing lanes 5-10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage where Brees throws 98% of his passes.

Unless CC Brown and Aaron Rouse are suiting up Monday night, I expect the Giants to bring the Saints down to their level and slug it out in an ugly game that will be decided in the 4th.

Sproles and Ingram have gotten a lot of press

but our best RB may be Pierre Thomas

he was running for good average last week, but the playcallers just did not keep giving him the ball

he’s also our best screen pass runner

Cameron Jordan is one of our rookies who is quietly putting together a decent season for a rookie…

And your defensive line? The Eagles line and their corners somewhat hurt the Giants offense especially.

Corners are good. As for the D-line, Will Smith is playing well at one end and Cam Jordan is solid, but not spectacular. At DT, we’ve brought in big time FAs who have not produced for much of the season…maybe the bye week will help therem though.

Next time somebody writes a crappy, three-sentence fanpost

I am going to link them to this AWESOME comment.

The only aspect of Fewell’s defense I don’t agree with is rushing 3 on 3rd and long. If I told you all 2 weeks ago that we were going to key in an Frank Gore and Lesean McCoy and completely shut them down, putting the games on Alex Smith and Vince Young to win, and really only be responsible for 1 TD in each game, how would you feel?

Rec'd hard bro

For the insightful comments.

All anyone remembers from the defense during the Philly game is that they failed during the final drive. But you correctly point out that they gave our offense the ball again and again.

Our Oline will be the teams undoing if they don’t play better. Period.

Lets see if I can answer these

I think most Saints fans know how and why we lose and win
I haven’t heard any Saints fans dog out the G-Mens defense
I believe the Saints blow the top off we also have a way of showing up big in games against good teams and laying an egg against bad teams
This is a pretty split thing our defense has let alot of yards but we step up big on holding teams to FG’s and were pretty happy with that we feel we do well trading FG’s for TD’s
Our left tackle is fickled,he has played well against bull rushers but I dont think he is good against speed rushers he has played some good games and layed some eggs I look for Sean Payton to give him lots of help
You still have Brandon Jacobs so you should be able to run on us
If i could answer why were not generating turn overs I would be on Greg Williams front porch screaming the answer till he was forced to listen or have me arrested
Falcon they know us well being a div. rival and although we have owned them lately I think we have won 7 of the last 9 they are either 3 point games or go into overtime
There’s a good chance he would but lets not forget Matt Shaub I think Texans are about to find out how MVP he is and also Scam Newton did anyone really fear the pansies before he came along

by mississippisaintsfan on Nov 27, 2011 8:15 AM EST up reply actions

To clarify...

I wasn’t taking a shot at Saints fans, but rather, at Giants’ fans who are ripping our defense after what really was a solid performance overall. I was asking (jokingly) if Saints fans are this hard on their team.

Much like what Simms-McConkey said, I have a problem with the three man rush on third and long, but that’s where it ends. Have to give credit to the defense for what they did do.

Our offensive line generates 0 push in the running game, so I am a little bit more worried about that than you’d think. Bradshaw makes our O-line look decent on the stat sheet when he’s in there, because he turns something out of nothing. Jacobs can’t really do that.

Falcons really seem like they are getting it together down the stretch. It looked like the Saints would run away with the division at first, but now I’m not so sure. I’d rather see the Falcons make the playoffs though because the Saints are so explosive. Even if we win tomorrow, I think the last place I want to go and visit in the postseason is New Orleans (if it comes to that). I’d take the Packers at Lambeau over that.

Matt Schaub is good, but I don’t think a quarterback could ever win it on IR. Unfortunately, much like how Chad Pennington always used to, his career is going the way of “what could have been”. A lot of talent but so many injuries. Of course, Schaub is probably a little bit better than Pennington was too.

I, too, have been amazed at how people are sour on the Giants defense, but I know how things are after games like the one y’all lost to the Eagles. I surely didn’t see that coming and I was very happy to see the Patriots (only time I remember pulling for them) end all of the talk about the Eagles making a run. I watched that game and it was painful…how can Brandon Jacobs be so big and get tackled so easy on those short passes?

Your D-line scares me, but I know that Brees and Payton have been planning for that over the bye week. That makes me feel a lot better.

Hearing that you’re starting a new LT makes me feel better about our pass rush, too, because Will Smith is the best on the D-line at pressuring the QB and I think that is where he lines up.

I’m not terribly worried about the Falcons. We still get them again in our dome and I think we can actually win out against a pretty solid remaining schedule. A lot of that depends on what we see tonight, though. Have the Saints made adjustments and put it all together? We’ll see.

As for the Texans, I still expect them to win their division, but losing Leinart hurts pretty bad. That defense is tough and they could still get the #1 seed. I think New England is the only team that will challenge them for it because of the remaining schedules for all of the contenders.

As for challengers in the NFC, I’d list the Giants, Cowboys, and Packers. I’d actually like to see y’all knock off the Pack and meet us for the NFC Championship…mainly because we might be hosting that game. Who do you see as the contenders?

by BlackandGold4ever on Nov 28, 2011 10:34 AM EST up reply actions

Packers

And I am a big time believer in SF. Great defense, great run game, unbelievable coaching, very good specials, and a QB that is not making mistakes and plays his best ball in the fourth quarter.

The rest of them, Saints, Giants, Boys, Falcons I will reserve judgement on. One of these may emerge, or maybe no one will.

Bears are in trouble with Hanie, but they are so good on defense and specials that if Hanie gets better, they could be good.

I have thought DET would go 8-8 once they started losing. they may go 9-7, but I do not, and have not, believed in them.

Still a month to go so alot can (will) change

It is

Like I said, the Saints are still playing better football than the Giants at the moment. My comments were more so directed at the Giants fans who assume we will get blown out of the water.

The Saints have an explosive offense, but so do the Patriots, and we played them well.

Not taking a shot at the Saints or trying to pass the Giants off as the better team. There are a million reasons why we should lose this game. Anything could happen.

by Max Schwager on Nov 27, 2011 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

What Giants fan (in their right mind)

thinks the Saints will get blown out of the water? Giants don’t bury anybody, nor do they have the o-line or effective defense to change that. They could squeak out a small points victory, but it will be a score something like 35-31. I honestly don’t see it happening, but then again, Tebow is 5-1 as a starter, so anything is possible I suppose, no matter how unlikely.

Mayhaps it was asked already, but...

…how much do you guys really blitz?

Generally, its the teams that DON’T blitz that have the most success against Eli. He has been absolutely deadly when it comes to identifying the blitz and then exploiting the 1-on-1 or weak point… or changing the play.

Its the teams that just rush 4 and wait for the receivers to let the ball bounce off their hands that have given me fits.

by Raptor22 on Nov 26, 2011 12:42 PM EST reply actions

I dont think we blitz as much as we mix up rushers

We over stack 1 side alot we bring our safety Roman Harper but then drop a linemen
As I saw this morning on NFL matchup alot of what Harper does depends on the TE
If the TE stays in to block Harper is coming most the time if he runs a pattern he doesn’t come
Harper leads our teams in sacks because our DC gives him alot of freedom
