Will Beatty To Have Surgery For Detached Retina

What now? Left tackle Will Beatty, who has been the New York Giants best offensive lineman this season, will undergo surgery on Thursday morning to repair a detached retina in his right eye. The Giants made the announcement late this afternoon.

The procedure will be performed by Donald J. D'Amico, MD, Professor and Chairman of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Ophthalmologist-in-Chief at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. A timeframe for Beatty's recovery is not known at this time.

What the Giants will do in an effort to replace Beatty is uncertain. Perhaps David Diehl, the starter at left tackle for several seasons prior to moving inside to guard this season, moves outside. Giants fans don't want to hear that, but Diehl to the outside and probably Kevin Boothe to left guard seems like the likely move.

The Giants also have veteran Stacy Andrews and rookie James Brewer as tackle options.

No he shouldnt be

I had a detached retina… it doesnt hurt… just sucks… He will probably sit out 1-2 weeks… Hell, mine healed by itself.. I dont envy the blood floaties he will be seeing though

Giants are young, and injured... Most importantly they are winning.

You had a tear or a very shallow detachment

Much less serious than one requiring surgical repair.

still,

I dont see him being placed on IR. 1-2 weeks maybe 3. It just sucks because he was about the best thing that is going on the O-Line.

Paraphrasing Ohm Y. ESPN NY Twiiter

Depending what doctors see when they dilate his eye he could miss anywhere from a few weeks, or the entire year.

by NYG_Slater on Nov 23, 2011 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

I had the surgery to reattach most of the retina

To the back of the eye. I still have a buckle around the eyeball. The doc had to slice into the eyeball, still have the scar… and some of the most excruciating pain I’ve ever experienced. Hope his is not as serious.

Now in section 133.

based on the info here, the whole offensive line has graded horrbily so whats the difference?

the defense has had a ton of injuries but the offense not nearly as many. bradshaw has missed the last 2 or 3 games and that is it. on the breadshaw front he gets hurt almost every year so that should be no suprise…

the giant players and coach’s jsut cannot overcome obstacles like other teams. the patriots secondary is made up of waiver guys and former flankers, stop the damn whining…

Seems pretty simple here

Have Brewer, Diehl, and Andrews go against Osi and JPP for half an hour. Whichever one does best, that’s our starting left tackle until Beatty is back. Plain and simple.

pats pass defense sucks..

i know there pass d sucks as does there whole d, but they still find a way.

the giant rush offense sucks. 27th in the league or worse. beatty is not that good, maybe compared to the other losers on the line he is but watch the tape. he gets beat all the time. compare him and jason peters. that is a pro against a high school player.

the giants have a lot of talent, they should be able to overcome the injuries. are you whim=ning about witherspoon or coe or tryon being hurt? they all did ok, but they are not suppose to be starters. Thomas now that is an injury that should impact the team, he was a very good starting DB… Goff injury also hurt but Sintim, nah…

Injuries are part of this brutal game and that is why the players need to maximize there payday when they can. The only injury that cannot be overcome is Eli if he got hurt…

Guys like Aaron Ross always get hurt, that should count against those type of players when they get drafted or are given new contracts. Bradshaw gets hurt or dinged up every year but Forte so far not at all.

by stuart a on Nov 23, 2011 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Pretty sad that the best part of our invis-o-line is down.

Man, we asked “How can things get worse?”, well, we got our answer, didn’t we?

by nygmen123 on Nov 23, 2011 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Stuart is right here.

Guys get hurt. Vick down, Maclin down, etc. They won. And the REASON they won is because they played like they WANTED to win. On the road, no starting QB, no #1 WR, and they beat us. It comes down to how badly do you want it? This team has demonstrated over the last three years that they don’t want it.

by nygmen123 on Nov 23, 2011 6:20 PM EST reply actions

injury prone

enaother injury prone guy is Ware. He is always dinged up… For whatever reason he is always hurt. Is it becuase he runs upright, does not try to avoid collisions, who knows but the bottom line for some reason some guys get hurt a lot more then other guys and that should factor into there value to the team.

Giants have not paid attention to detail since the superbowl. special teams have been below avg. tunrover issues persist, this is not a liekable winning team. Not sure if it is the coaching or the players but if they do not make the playoffs they need to make big changes.

steelers have more injuries

steelers have more injuries then the Giants and are a mash unit almost every year and they figure it out.

this team has no tough guys!!! who are the tought guys? osi, tuck, snee, rolle, who?

the steelers on D play nasty, year in and year out. harrison, woodley, timmons, clark. these guys will hit you clean or not and try to intimidate you. giants on D do no intimidating nada…

th eold giant teams that stunk at least they would kick your ass on d. they offensively where challenged but made you feel it when they were on defense.

kenny phillips is no difference maker. the only difference makers they have on d are JPP and he is a young player and OSi who is a pass rush only DE.. He is a copy of the D end on Tampa from Illinois when they won the superbowl. That is it. There LB’s are lambs, the defense scares no one. There D line scared people in 2007 and what happened? they won the superbowl and there D line hid all the flaws of the back 7….

by stuart a on Nov 23, 2011 6:26 PM EST reply actions

I doubt they do

Are they playing their 7th string corner back in their dime package? There are not many teams in the league that have as many injuries as the Giants do throughout the whole team at almost every position and depth level.

The doom and gloom around here is just unreal.

Look, guys are just going to have to play their hearts out, something they just haven’t done since the Pats game. Fool is going to HAVE to bring pressure and sack Brees. He’s sackable, bottom line. How do you think the eggs felt coming into the Meadowlands without Vick, Maclin, and Cromartie? Didn’t matter. They played HARDER than we did, and they won. That is what we have to do. Play harder, smarter, and faster than the other team. Do that, and we win. Sure, we could fold it up for the season. If they do, then there is NO question. It is TIME to bring in a new staff if they do that.

by nygmen123 on Nov 23, 2011 6:57 PM EST reply actions

That's what infuriates me

Why did the Eagles play harder? I know that their season was on the line but the Giants’ season is on the line too. This team has done nothing to warrant taking a week off. We’re not SF with the division basically locked up. This team had every reason to blast the Eagles. It was an opportunity to end their season while staving off another 2nd-half losing streak.

Instead they’re 0-2 in the 2nd half with have NO and GB coming in back to back weeks.

Hope Will feels better

Wonder if it happened in the game? Can we not tell Diehl we’re going to New Orleans? As with Jacobs, thank you for your service….next!

by scarlet knight on Nov 23, 2011 7:18 PM EST reply actions

forget the offense, what about the great pass rush

We couldn’t get even close to sacking VY against the Beagels’ tattered OL. How do you think we’re going to do vs. Brees? Saints are going to score all day and Sproles is going to drive us nuts. Although Eli will have to throw off his back foot all game, by the time the 3rd quarter is halfway through, the Saints will (unfortunately) have at least 4 TDs on the board. And Eli and the Giants will be after-thoughts in New Orleans on MNF. Say goodbye to 2011………………………….
Hey Reese, want to give Osi a huge raise next year for his superlative play??? LOL!!!!
Get a 2nd round draft choice for him next year; i.e.,get rid of him………………. PLEASE!!!!!!!

get rid of the mouths

And get rid of Jacobs, too!!!!!! How can he knock the most loyal fans on the planet?

I have season's tickets and have gone to all the games for the last three years

When the Giants do well or it’s an important third down, the fans cheer.

When the team screws up, we boo.

We ‘re paying these guys to perform. it’s New York, we are used to winners!

The fans were so psyched to avenge last year’s home loss to the Eagles, but the Giants did not show up to play. Only Snee defended Eli, no one stuck up, for Fewell and the Eagles ate our lunch in our house .

BOO!

Oh for...

was the Timex Performance Facility built on top of a burial ground for pissed off Indians? Maybe next time the Pope’s in town he can perform an exorcism? (I just don’t think a Cardinal has the stuff to fix this)

…I wonder if LSU or Alabama would be willing to part with their team for a couple months?

i would say throw in the towel

But the last time we ran well was with booty booth filling in for Snee on the right side and he did a great job last year at lg when ohara went down and we slid Seubert over to center. Diehl may do better at LT bcuz he can get help from TEs and RB. This maybe a bless or a bust we’ll just have to wait and see

I had already seen this story confirmed a few places but for some reason when I came here and read the headline my brain registered it as a question:

Will Beatty Have Surgery for Detached Retina?

Hope not

He probably already did have the procedure done..

If this team collapses again

then it’s rime for Coughlin to go. I’m sick of this annual meltdown, and I don’t like what I’m hearing from the different players. It seems as if everyone of them has their own way of motivating themselves to play, and it’s not working. This team for some inexplicable reason makes stupid mistakes at the wrong times in games, and then seems to give up when they play good opponents. The team is an extension of the head coach, and as usual like in years past, they are an injury riddled mess. With the talent this team has, there’s no excuse, if they go in the tank Coughlin needs to go and maybe some of these gutless players need to too.

by mrluck35 on Nov 24, 2011 8:26 AM EST reply actions

I do think sucessful teams have great coaches...

Look at the Niners with Singletary vs. Harbaugh. The guy seems like a bit of a jerk, but he appears to know what he’s doing. Also, he is at an age where he can relate to the players.

I think Coughlin is a good coach, but I have doubts about Gilbride, Fewell and Quinn. i like Jerry Reese.

Coughlin for VP of player development, new coach from among the good young coordinators with Spags back as DC?

by scarlet knight on Nov 24, 2011 10:57 AM EST reply actions

Shawn Andrews?

Andrews was the best left tackle the giants had since Jumbo Elliot,Diehl will get Eli killed,no doubt in my mind. His best move is the LOOKOUT block.

by bobby53 on Nov 24, 2011 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Andrews was friggin terrible

Diehl was good for a few years, Beatty is twice as good as Andrews and when he wasn’t committing penalties, Luke Pettitgout was pretty good at LT.
