Giants Tendencies Week Six

Against the Bills, the Giants offence broke down as:

               Run                 Pass

00              0                      0

01              0                      0

10              0                      4

11              9                     11

12              3                      3

13              0                      0

20              0                      0

21              11                    13

22              5                      3

23              4                      0

A great reason for the Giants being able to get the W last week was their ability to run the football. The benefit of the strong running game was that they were able to keep their plays very balanced, they had 32 run plays (16 in both halves) and 36 passing plays (21 first half, 15 second half). Not only that, they also kept their favourite personnel packages (11 and 12) balanced which they were unable to do in weeks four or five. I also like the fact that they used the heavy sets (21, 22 and 32) more in this game, which seemed to help Bradshaw get some yards.

The Bills game brought the total from weeks four to six to:

               Run                 Pass

00              1                      0

01              2                      1

10              3                      10

11              34                    46

12              7                      5

13              0                      1

20              2                      0

21              36                    32

22              10                     7

23              5                      1

They still pass the ball considerably more from the 11 than they run it, but overall this is still very balance play calling, and this should help both the passing game and the running game as the other team cannot be confident that they know what Gilbride is doing.

As requested by Willgfass(lemme know if you'd rather see it differently, this was just the way that made sense to me), Ive put the personnel our defence used with the breakdown of the Bills plays. Theyre basically catagorised as they are im Madden, I know its not the best analytical source, but its my personal area of expertise. Nickel has 2 LBs, 5 DBs, Dime has 1 LB, 6 DBs, and Quarter has 3 linemen, 1 LB and 6 DBs.

Run                 Pass                 4-3                 Nickel             Dime               Quarter

00              0                      6                     0                     1                     4                        1

01              0                      0                     0                     0                     0                        0

10              1                      14                   0                     10                    3                        2

11              11                    14                   4                     20                    1                        0

12              1                      0                     1                     0                      0                       0

13              0                      0                     0                     0                      0                       0

20              5                      2                     0                     7                      0                       0

21              0                      0                     0                     0                      0                       0

22              0                      0                     0                     0                      0                       0

23              0                      0                     0                     0                      0                       0

WC            1                      1                     2                     0                      0                       0

As you can see, nickel was used far more often than any other formation (39 nickel formations vs. 19 of any other formation). This is for a number of reasons, primarily the injuries on D. Fewell used a safety, Grant usually, in the box, effectively as a third LB to make up for the injuries to and youth of our LB corps. It was also as a result of the use of 11 frequently by the Bills (which im starting to think is the most common offensive personnel package) and the need in that formation to have 3 DBs on WRs. It was also interesting to see that in the Dime and Quarter formations, the LB wasn't the usual MLB, Greg Jones, but it was Michael Boley. I guess this shows that Fewell thinks that Boley is the best all-round LB in his system.
