What do you think is the single most important thing the Giants need to do in this years off-season?
I stated earlier that none of our FAs are important to resign (and i incluced steve smith in this and caught some trash for it, but i still stand by my opinion of thinking he is not that important to bring back. An older mario and nicks will do fine and we can spend elsewhere.) But i reevaluated my decision on another guy.
Barry Cofield MUST be resigned. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say he was the most important defensive player this year. He plugged up the middle on a highly consistent basis. He shut down the run extremely often and just absolutely dominated the middle of the field and made Jonathan Goff look A LOT better than he actually is. Goff was free to roam most of the time because of the extremely solid play at the defensive tackle position by Cofield. Let's be honest with ourselves, Gof iss probably the worst starting middle linebacker in the NFL. The plays he made were thanks to wide open gaps to fill.
For passing situations when they brought Jason Pierre-Paul in to line up opposite of Osi Umenyiora, and had Justin Tuck move to tackle along side Cofield, that line was domination. We got penetration on a very high percentage of pass plays this season, I think the highest qb pressure percentage in the NFL and Barry Cofield is an extremely underated asset to our defensive pressure on the QB. For a big guy he can move and I would much rather sit Chris Canty, using him for situational purposes and take his enormous salary hit than get rid of Cofield just for Linval Joseph to get some time. Hopefully te Giants can resign this guy before Spags steals him and brings him to St Louis with our other former number one DT (Fred Robbins)
