Happy 20th Anniversary, Super Bowl XXV
Scott Norwood, wherever you are, New York Giants fans offer a toast in your honor today. It has been 20 years to the day since "wide right" on Jan. 27, 1991 gave the Giants their second Super Bowl championship, a 20-19 victory over the snakebitten Buffalo Bills.
By the way if you stop by Buffalo Rumblings today they are remembering this with a much different mindset.
The video below is all you need.

Was epic…our ground & pound almost cost us…but thank the football Gods for norwood….I think had Sims played we might have had a better day on Offense ! Carl Banks & O.J anderson stand out in my mind as having legendary games…I tip my hat to the bills..Thurman thomas was killing us! That team was loaded! Just a bit of trivia..we gave the 1st lose to both 4peat losers denver & buff !
wake me up at draft time..

Nice piece of trivia!
“Thermal” was killing us! I remember Belichick had to convince his defense to play a defense that would cause success in the run game in order to stop the pass.
Time of possession. That sticks out to me. There was some ridiculous amount of real time where, from the Giants last possession of the first half, through halftime, and the Giants first possession of the second half, the Bills did’nt touch the ball for like an hour or more.
Yeah, I wish Simms had finished the season. No gaurantee we would have had the same outcome, but, it would be nice to be able to call him a two-time SB champ.
Unsung play of the game: Hostetler holding on to the ball WITH ONE HAND ONLY while Bruce Smith (killer) sacked him for a safety in the first half. If they had gotten a TD there, we may have very well lost that game.
I will raise a glass tonight for the SB XXV champs!

Hoss holding that ball was huge
Two other plays that stand out in my memory are Mark Ingram twisting and turning his way through defenders to convert a big first down and OJ winding up and unloading on Mark Kelso.

Love the OJ uppercut play
BTW – Norwood pushed 2 of the XPs to the right. They were good but his kicks were leaning right the entire game.
NICE F-IN MEMORY!!!!

+1
that Otis hit is the best part of the NFL Films highlight video… that and two other things
1. Whitney singing the anthem and seeing the faces and flags in the crowd
2. The music while Stephen Baker catches his TD pass

And Meggett had a big play as well...
to keep a long drive going. The Ingram play was fantastic. Still have it on tape, along with the rest of the game – good for cleansing the mind after some of the losses we’ve had since.
And don't forget Jumo Elliott shutting down Bruce Smith..

Not Denver
First SB loss was to Dallas, 1977 season.
That was the first SB I ever watched
Good times for sure.
Something I forgot to mention about the 86 SB that always makes me smile, my father (in honour of the Giants) put down beer for the game, and instead picked up some Gatorade and Gin, drinking that all game. However, lacking the flavour he wanted, he had to go with some sort of Lime Green Gatorade instead… and apparently it was atrocious stuff. One of my favourite Giant fandom stories ever, just had to share it.
Bri..that would have been one hell of a Gatorade bath!!..lol

Wow 5 years old in '91...
That means in ’86 you were just getting ready to score your first touchdown!!..1st and goal at the one yard line!!..lol

Anyone have this game on DVD?
All I can find on Amazon is the “America’s Game” edition, which I think cuts out too much and has too much talking (but the music is great).
My late Dad recorded it on VCR for me..
I was in Iraq, and had to fly that day..so he saved it for me..I’ll have to look for it..but it is the whole game…Will let you know

Was it snowing in Iraq or are you just rubbing in our faces...again...ha
not snowing in Buffalo but I will be wearing the Giants skull-cap when I step outside
sigh...
Speaking of Iraq,
no SB had the emotion of that game. Being at war, worried of an attack at the SB, the extra security to get in, and Whitney Houston’s signing of the anthem and the fly-over? High high emotional drama just going into that game. BTW, Bobbi, I was a jet mechanic with VA 34 outta NAS Oceana from 88 to 92. We were attached to the Eisenhower. Who did you fly for?

New York Giants 10 Greatest Games DVD Set
by G-FANinFL on Jan 27, 2011 9:11 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
awesome
added to the wish list, thanks.
"Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory."
Wish that happened this year....oh well.
I do
as part of a 10 disc set that is called “10 Greatest games NY Giants” It has all the playoff and the SB games from 86 and 90, the playoff wins over PHI and MN from 2000 season, NYG PHI frpm sept 17, 2006 and SB 42. Im dissapointed it does’nt have all the playoffs from 2007, but I have them on another disc. I believe I got it at NFL Shop.com
"Just when I thought you could'nt be any dumber, you go and do this... AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!
I don't have it on DVD, but....
I have all but the first couple of plays of it on VCR tape.
Ah the memories...
-The best singing of the National Anthem by Whitney Houston.
-OJ Anderson’s practice pants.
-OJ’s right hook on Mark Kelso as he rumbled down the sideline.
-Numerous camera shots of Darryl Talley, the ugliest man alive.
-The Hos miraculously hangs onto the ball as he takes the safety.
-Mark Ingram’s incredible effort to get the first down on 3rd and 13.
-And of course…Norwood’s miss wide right. To this day I have never seen my father jump so high.
"Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next."
I was young (20) and not as jaded
as I am now. But I swear, I SWEAR I never for one second thought that Norwood would make that kick. Now,aat this age, I would have pictured it going thru the uprights 50 times before he actually kicked it. lol.
And how about Kelso’s helmet? Is Eli going to be wearing that style soon? Every year his helmet gets bigger! lol
"Just when I thought you could'nt be any dumber, you go and do this... AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!
Kelso reminded me of Gazoo from the Flintstones with that helmet

Anderson-take 2
Let me transition to current topics and recent posts. Anderson was well past his prime and yet he was breaking through the Bill’s line and his running style was similar to BJ. He ran well enough to earn MVP of the game.
BJ, who has just reached his prime gets stopped at the LOS so often that it’s safe to say we don’t have a running game even though his yards per carry numbers were pretty good. Once he breaks through the LOS, he gets big yards that offsets all the short yardage stops.
Transition to the discussions about O-linemen. When I see a prospective lineman discussed here I give a mental thumbs up if the description says “He’s an excellent run blocker”. Thumbs down if the description indicates “good pass blocker but no push”. Like Solder, for example.
Forgive me if I am wrong, but Anderson was good because his front line blocking was good. I’d hate to see BJ go to another team with good run blocking and become a great back—again. Look at what happened to Ward. No blocking and he becomes so-so. Miami paid through the nose and dumped him. Think of BJ still tearing it up at age 33 and think Run blocking. We go to the Superbowl and WE RULE!
Interesting and thoughtful
comparison between the two big backs. And it’s true, open up bigger holes for 27 and he is a mauler once he gets a head of steam into that second level. And he looked so much healthier this season.
And in a prideful sense, I enjoyed and want again, to have the O-line with the reputation as being the best in football and the power based offense that goes with it.
"Just when I thought you could'nt be any dumber, you go and do this... AND TOTALLY REDEEM YOURSELF!!
Just want to point out that no one has ever performed the National Anthem as well as Whitney did
On military bases if you go to the movie theatre you must stand for Whitney’s National Anthem before the movie starts, or at least you had to when I was in. Its the best I’ve ever heard and it brings back so many great memories of us winning it all.
To err is human.
To forgive is divine.
Neither is Marine Corps Policy.

I was 13 when they won this game
& for the rest of the school year, that version of the national anthem was played every morning after the pledge. I loved every minute of that
Required reading
Any Giants fan who’s ever felt sorry for himself after a disappointing loss needs to go over to Buffalo Rumblings and read their post and comments on the game. It will give you some perspective – for every memorable win celebrated by us Giants fans, there are fans on the other side who remember the same game with regret if not outright dread.
For whatever bad memories we have, we’re still blessed with more good ones than the fans of a lot of other teams.
I could'nt agree more,
as long as we are not going all the way back to the 70’s… which I barely remember. There is only 3 teams with more SB trophies and a handful (4?) that have 3 like we do. It does bother me though that the Jets have been to 1 more conference championship game than us, but I do perfer the 4-0 record in those games. I’m gonna go read some whinnin’ Bills fans posts. lol

I still have my SI commemorative issue
Everson Walls on the cover, arms outstretched…
Parcells and George Young were very good (lucky)
with their veteran signings. I think Parcells ability to motivate had alot to do with the veteran signings success rate. Everson walls is a good example.

GREAT GAME...
I was in Yokosuka, Japan at the time. I remember having to BEG my nerdy, sports hating science teacher Mr. Clark to watch the game on a TV in our class. When that kick sailed wide right I jumped around like an idiot and almost got into trouble. This game WAS the greatest SB ever until SB 42 happened.
