What's the best move of the offseason?

For me it has to be Perry Fewell.  Even though the team that will take to the field on Sunday is much the same as it was a year ago, a lot has changed.

New faces in new places, draft picks, free agent signings even a couple of UDFA's.  All the moves that were made this offseason were throuroghly scrutinized here at BBV, and with the 53 man roster now no longer a guess, I was just wondering what everybody felt was the best move made since the last time we saw The Giants in a meaningful game (somewhere around week 8 last year).

And conversely what was the worst move, or non-move by Jerry and Co.?

Well all of it remains to be seen

and a lot of stuff, like only getting Bulluck and Dillard, has more to do with valuing other positions and the lack of available players in the draft and FA.

Maybe they should’ve went in on Kirk Morrison? Even if he’s probably not a MLB, at outside LB he could’ve at least provided depth.

I like the Fewell move too, but that’s gonna take time to evaluate…many are writing him off after the preseason and I wish those that do would go root for the Jests.

I do think the best non-move was taking JPP over Weatherspoon. If both reach their potential, having someone like JPP helps the D ten-fold over a LB.

But again, lot of stuff remains to be seen.

I guess the only move that actually has an answer is the move that I thought was best, and that’s drafting Chad Jones. Hope Doom makes it back, but really sad. I thought he would’ve been a wrecking ball as the 3rd S and possibly covering TE’s. Being a hyprid S/LB I thought he’d just be a terror by mid-season, but oh well.

chad jones

was the only guy on my wishlist of draft picks that actually wound up in NY, to hear what happened to him was a dark day indeed, I thought he could have really solidified alot on the defensive side of the ball right away.

antrell rolle

biggest problem with the d last year was at the back end.
saddest moment… chad jones not being here. wouldn’t it be nice to have 3 solid safeties (rolle, kp and grant) and a stud like Jones learning from them.
worst non-move… retaining our special teams coach. We really need to see improvement there. Hope he can make me a liar.

+1 I agree with this too

I was going to say Fuel at first, but as of right now…Rolle has been what we needed…at least from pre-season play… Fuel, we’ll definitely know after 4-5 regular season games

I say Fewell

Because of how significantly we improved at D-Coordinator. Going from Sheridan to a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon woulda been an improvement, but this guy has a pulse and seems to have a clue.

Worst move

drafting JPP

The guy can’t play football, plain and simple.

at risk of being proven wrong

by what goes down this year, I think you’re right that being decisive about the coaching situation was the right move. Whether the scheme was bad or not (it was at the least very vanilla), you can’t have a coach lose control of his defense like that. We’ll see if Fewell holds it down, but from what we’ve seen, there isn’t a lot to worry about.

As far as non-moves, there’s some weird thinking here about how a pass rush affects the passing game. A great pass rush really takes a ton of pressure off the secondary, no one can deny that, and if we have one then we will be a flat-out better defense than last year- no pressure killed our deep coverage.
However, I would have loved picking up a LB who can really cover and move. When you apply a ton of pressure, the offense is gonna switch to a lot of crossing routes, slot alerts, TE quick outs, all that good 3-step drop stuff, and that increases the amount of traffic the LB’s get. You rarely get sacks on a 3 step drop, the majority come on 5 and 7, and I believe you need at least 2 good coverage LB’s.
Boley is clearly one, very impressed with his athletic ability and natural movement in his drops. I’m not convinced there is another one on the roster (except Wilkinson if healthy, big if). Bulluck was great in his day, and if he’s able to continue that despite the knee injury then I’m worrying for nothing, but honestly I think it would have been prudent to pick up a guy who can move back there, if not Weatherspoon in the 1st then elsewhere. Just my opinion that it’s a key to a pressure defense if you wanna be great, gotta be able to drop into firezone and stop that underneath stuff, need quickness at the second level.

i think this D will be like the 2007 D.

we will take are lumps early in the season and jell later. i hope we all have patients till it comes together, and not get on the staff till at least mid season .

But I’m very glad inretrospect we didn’t trade for Edwards or Boldin in 08

2007 Defense could be a possibility in 2010

Lets not forget how our defense started out in 2007. Remember how it took the defense some time to respond to Spags coaching philosophy. I would suspect the same for Perry Fewell. The only difference is Spags was all about pressure while Perry seems to be more about Cover. What does anyone else think?

by G-MEN#1 on Sep 5, 2010 11:29 PM EDT reply actions

hard to say that statement that Fuel is more about cover...

haven’t seen any real season schemes with this group of guys…He had a different set of guys from the Bills, so just by going off his interviews et all, he seems to be very flexible but his schemes seem to cater towards his personnel. Although, the flipside is that he has always had the history of being a PRO-secondary coach.

So, for me to early to tell, but there is one thing that’s been clear with him…he wants Turnovers…and I definitely WELCOME that.

As far as the roster is concerned

Antrel Rolle. Plain and simple. Pair him with Kenny Phillips and we have a dream duo at the safety position. Once they click with each other lookout. I mean nobody thought Michael Johnson was bad before Bad Bad CC Brown showed up, because MJ played well with Kenny. The U gunna rep it big time this year.

Poor Chad Jones

the guy had a bright future, could have been our best move this year, who knows? Has anyone heard anything about him and how he is doing? I hope there is a chance that he can at least be a pitcher for a baseball team, he was a pretty good pitcher if I remember correctly

Last I heard is

if he can get back into sports, baseball is what he would play. Wish him all the luck in the world

right...

I’d say I feel sorry for him but from what happened I think that he lived is a bit of a miracle. Baseball will be his sport upon recovery…

Joseph

From what I’ve seen/heard this kids poised to be an impact player in no time.

The givens…Rolle, Bullock, and Andrews.

How about this one…giving Victor Cruz a roster spot might provide some highlight clips this year. We may hear the “CRUUUUUUUZZZZ!” chants…

I think we're looking at the wrong UDFA WR

Cruz had the one big game, but Duke Calhoun is the 6"4 dude with also blazing speed. Those “Cruuuuuz” could be “DUUUUUUKEE”

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 6, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Great point

I’m guilty of overlooking DUUUUUKEE in favor of Cruz solely on that one performance.

3 easy steps

Coaching: Fewel is gonna be great but our ST and the strength and condishioning coaches need to go too many injuries

on D: Rolle is gonna be beasty and Joseph/JPP are gonna develop nicely ( wonder what happens to Kiwi)

Offense: Shawn Andrews could revert back to his pro bowl form, wonder how the line looks week 6
