So this is how the Giants' 53 man roster currently looks
Just when you thought you had a clue on what the 53 man roster would look like, you find out you have no idea...
at least those were the things going on in my head yesterday. My 53 man roster turned to chicken scratch pretty quickly.
Is JR finished? I think not...but I can roll with this current roster, but we could use some depth upgrade in a few places like, Corner, Safety and TE...maybe even LB too. Everywhere else, not bad...I'll roll into the 2010 season with most of these guys.
Giants Roster:
Offense (24)
Quarterbacks (2): Eli Manning, Sage Rosenfels,
Running Backs (4): Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, D.J. Ware, Darius Reynaud
Fullbacks (1): Madison Hedgecock
Wide Receivers (6): Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, Hakeem Nicks, Ramses Barden, Victor Cruz, Duke Calhoun
Tight Ends (2): Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum
Offensive Linemen (9): David Diehl, Rich Seubert, Shaun O'Hara, Chris Snee, Kareem McKenzie, Will Beatty, Adam Koets, Shawn Andrews, Mitch Petrus
Defense (26)
Defensive Linemen: (9): Justin Tuck, Barry Cofield, Chris Canty, Mathias Kiwanuka, Osi Umenyiora, Rocky Bernard, Dave Tollefson, Jason Pierre-Paul, Linval Joseph
Linebackers (8): Jonathan Goff, Michael Boley, Keith Bulluck, Bryan Kehl, Clint Sintim, Chase Blackburn, Phillip Dillard, Gerris Wilkinson
Cornerbacks (5): Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas, Aaron Ross, Bruce Johnson, D.J. Johnson
Safeties (4): Antrel Rolle, Deon Grant, Kenny Phillips, Michael Johnson
Specialists (3)
Kicker (1): Lawrence Tynes
Punter (1): Matt Dodge
Long Snapper (1): Zak DeOssie

Coughlin mentions his thoughts on Hagan & Special Teams:
"It was a tough call," Coughlin said. "Derek Hagan is a very good special teams player and he made our team a year ago because of that. We felt like our situation, particularly at the gunner spot, had not emerged the way we wanted to. Calhoun did a nice job the other night. He and Reynaud, along with a couple of other guys - D.J. Johnson - will get an excellent opportunity to help us in that regard. We need the power and the speed going down the field because of the young punter (Dodge) and we didn't get many plays made out of the gunner position in preseason.
"We certainly had an eye toward who can help us on special teams and there are always thoughts on that when you put your roster together - who's going to perform in what categories. That had a lot to do with our trade for (Reynaud). It's going to be reflected in the added responsibility we put on a lot of people to help us become a stronger special teams outfit than we were in the preseason. We kept eight linebackers and a lot of thought went into that - not that they're all going to be active. There's always great attention given to special teams. We were a team coming into training camp that had a lot of work to do and a lot of transitional spots that had to be taken care of. We hope we're moving in that direction."

I like many, do not think the GMen are completely done... so, we'll definitely see how the next couple weeks changes this team, who makes the practice squad and much more...

interesting 53
gotta say im surprised/saddened to see jay alford and andre brown go, i wouldve rather seen wilkinson and dj ware go.i also didnt expect calhoun and dj johnson to make it, but that could change if the giants decide to bring in another TE or a veteran corner or safety.

Calhoun's speed and apparently his good play on ST
means they really like this kid. I guess it doesn’t hurt also running in a 60 yd TD. I wonder what is 40 time was.

Bear Pascoe
is the only cut I feel upset about. I can live without the rest. AB2 seems slightly injury prone, and even if he isn’t we still have AB and BJ. Jay Alford was expendable because of his past injuries and fact that we have a fair number of DT’s. Hagan I assume will be replaced by Reyaud on ST’s and Calhoun or Cruz at WR. Oh Wait, I totally forgot to ask, does this mean the end of Bomar jokes here on BBV?
Some BBVers believe and I'm starting to come around to it...
that Bomar can possibly get unto the Practice Squad. I think Andre Brown & Bear also can get on there. I think Bear has less than 9 games on the Giants 53 last year…so he should be eligible. AB2, not so sure, wasn’t he on the IR list last year? If he is I don’t think he is eligible to go to PS. And Hagan is in his 4th year, so he’s not eligible either.

I just can't believe
we lost 53 backups with a single roster move.
You play to win the game!

Its all about specials I guess.
And maybe the Beckum over Pascoe shows that when Boss is getting a breather, they’re going to a wide open offense.
Bradshaw at RB and Beckum at TE, those are 2 check-down options that are a lot quicker at getting open then Boss
The starters look solid
I think the backups are pretty good too, but I’d like an upgrade at CB (did TC call out DJ Johnson on special teams?).
On another note, once he gets to the practice squad and works on his directional punting, I expect BOMAR to replace Dodge by week 6. The real benefit here is that we will have the only punter who is also a gunner after the punt.
As Alford is gone, you forgot to mention that at times...
Bomar would be the long snapper to himself as well. Seriously thouogh, unless Dodge totally crumbles, I think the Giants have made the commitment to him. I can’t see TC talking about him the way he has, and mentioning the need to get more speed on coverages because of the young punter if he planned on dumping him. That said, I’m sure if a vet who they considered an upgrade is available, I’m sure they’ll evaluate it, but I think it’s Dodge’s job to lose at this point.
