NFL Roster Cuts: Who Will Be The Giants' 53, Open Thread

Rhett Bomar is no longer a Giant. (Photo by Nick Laham/Getty Images)

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 4:31 PM EDT: Jay Alford has been cut. Have to say I called this one. Tough break for a guy who looked like he was on the verge of becoming a good player before getting hurt a year ago.]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 3:40 PM EDT: Defense end Alex Hall has been released. My guess is Jerry Reese is working the phones trying to get draft picks in return for a few guys as the 6 p.m. ET deadline approaches. ]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 2:03 PM EDT: Another  roster stunner as Derek Hagan has been cut; Jerome Johnson and Nate Collins released. ]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 12:59 PM EDT: Mike Garafolo tweets that Rhett Bomar will be waived. Have not seen that anywhere else yet, but MG never gets these things wrong. Lot of things happening with this roster I would not have expected 24 hours ago.]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 12:46 PM EDT: The latest cut is offensive lineman Jacob Bender. ]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 11:33 AM EDT: Tim Brown and Gartrell Johnson waived. It is looking like Rhett Bomar will make the final cut.]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 10:42 AM EDT: Bear Pascoe and Scott Chandler both waived;  Also Tommie Hill and Dominic Randolph. Absolutely stunned by the release of Pascoe, leaving only Kevin Boss and Travis Beckum as tight ends.]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 10:23 AM EDT: John BusingDennis Landolt, Jim Cordle have been cut. Busing will be a surprise to some, but I didn't have him on my final 53.]

[UPDATE, 09/04/10 9:47 AM EDT: Defensive tackle Dwayne Hendricks has been waived. ]

NFL teams have to set their 53-man rosters by 6 p.m. ET this evening. Who will be on the New York Giants' 53-man roster?

We know Sage Rosenfels and Darius Reynaud will be after Friday night's trade with Minnesota, and Rhett Bomar most likely won't be. There are, however, lots of other questions.

Can they find roster space for 10 defensive linemen? Will they bring in a kick returner off the waiver wire? A backup cornerback? Will they release a running back? A linebacker like Gerris Wilkinson or Bryan Kehl? Who will the backup offensive linemen be?

Even once the rosters are set this evening, there is likely to be some shuffling for a couple of days as teams see which players hit the waiver wire.

Use this as your 53-man roster Open Thread for the day. I will try to update it, but if you see news of roster cuts feel free to drop them in the comment. I may start a new thread along the way if the news warrants it, but for now the plan is to just keep the updates here.

We can't cut any linebackers.....

We need them all for the 3-4 defense!

Seriously though I think Bomar will likely be gone. The gamble to keep only two quarterbacks is a much better one with an experienced game proven guy like Sage.

Completely unrealistic to cut Bomar

I’ll just repeat what I heard a smart NFL expert say on Sirius NFL Radio yesterday: Even if the Giants bring in a veteran QB, Bomar will still be Eli’s backup. The Giants offense requires the QB to make a LOT of decisions and calls at the line, and it is completely unrealistic to expect a guy to come in at this point and be able to run the offense.

Now, it is certainly possible that as the year goes on, Bomar might not dress on game day, but there is no shot he isn’t on the roster.

Bomar is not game ready. Coughlin would not start him over Sage if Eli got hurt.

Rhett is 25 years old so he has virtually no chance to ever take over for Eli who is only 29.

The Giants will likely keep only two quarterbacks so Bomar will be cut. I think Bomar is a gamer and might just mature enough to be a good backup or even a starter somewhere but it won’t be here.

so Sage can learn the offense and the Giants language

He only needs to learn it before Eli gets hurt.

And with Eli’s record so far that’s a reasonable gamble. Certainly better than a total unknown like Bomar who might just trip over the sideline on his first run to the huddle in a real game.

by giant fan since 57 on Sep 4, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

okay its fair to say that Eli is a durable work horse

but I don’t get the knock on Bomar, he’s a baller from what we’ve seen of him during the preseason, I understand that he’s younger than Eli by not that much, so yes fair excuse if Gmen decide to let him go, b/c he may not be the successor to Eli, but I think as a serviceable backup – that he can be! As for doing it right away? like you mentioned Eli is a durable workhorse, you really think Sage will be that much better and Bomar has wheels unlike Sage. So if there’s no play on a receiver he can try to run it. I say it’s a toss up either way, doesn’t guarantee anything with either Sage or Bomar. Sage has the experience for granted not in the Giants system & Bomar (even though it’s only preseason) does have a very limited experience in that same system. If they can sneak him to PS…then that would be the best thing for him…and that could very well happen. But I still think they keep 3 QBs.

That's why he's here

Let’s face it: he’d be the third-string running back or the seventh-string wide receiver AT BEST if he was to make this team as an offensive player. Given his ability to explode when he’s in the open field, and the fact that the team struggled to return kicks all preseason, he’s probably going to be one of our return-men against Carolina on opening day.

I don't know why you assume Bomar is a goner ...

as the Giants have had 3 QB’s on the roster before under TC. I think it was more of a case of not having a developmental QB worth a roster spot the last two years. Certainly not Woodson, and not Bomar last year, but Bomar has finally shown something, and that’s why they can’t stash him on the PS this year.

Besides, a lot of the other guys on the bubble will still be available later in the year if they get cut now, should a need arise.

by Shofner85 on Sep 4, 2010 7:36 AM EDT reply actions

That was before they realized Eli had adamantium fused to his skeleton

completely unnecessary to carry 3 QB’s.

It will be the end of someone like Alford too, all just to have someone who can test out the NFL licensed jackets for the winter

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

LOL ! Had to look that one up in the "fictionary" ...

Eli does seem damn durable, but JTMacc had a good point above. Bomar may not be ready to win a game in the NFL, but he may be better than Sage for the next few as Sage learns the vaunted KG “offensive” package.

If they see enough in Bomar to develop into the #2 for 2011 and beyond, I’m guessing they keep him. Then they can go back to 2 QB’s. If not, no reason to carry him anyway. Maybe they get lucky and can sneak him onto the PS.

by Shofner85 on Sep 4, 2010 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Or maybe Andre Brown gets the PUP listing...

He’s going to miss at least two weeks with turf toe anyways, which would force him to miss the first six weeks. Bomar gets carried for those six, and depending on the injury situations and his further development, maybe he sticks after that and Brown takes another slot. It makes us thin at running back, but the new kick returner can be an emergency fill in there, if needed.

good points L-Tech

my rebutt is that if there weren’t such a log jam at that position, i’d love him to stay. but he’s fallen so far on the depth chart(Bernard’s jumped him at this point) that i can’t even see him making an impact this year if he stays.

i also think we romanticize him because of his man rape of pretty boy Brady, sort of how we hold up Tyree to a higher standard now because of his SB performance. but outside of that one play, and the following camp where he was supposed to be a man possessed until his injury, what has he really done in a blue uni to warrant him being put in the untouchable category?

I see your point W22.
but outside of that one play, and the following camp where he was supposed to be a man possessed until his injury, what has he really done in a blue uni to warrant him being put in the untouchable category?

I don’t have an answer for that question. Alford’s name doesn’t come up much when it comes to making BIG plays and without that kind of supporting evidence to produce, I can’t really make a case for the guy aside from what I have already stated below.

i also think we romanticize him

I will give you that as well. Alford is a native of Orange, NJ which is the next town over form where I grew up. He is one of the fan favorites in this area so I will concede that I am probably being biased in my desire to see him stay with us.

waiver process

can they remove someone from the waiver wire if a claim is put in?

or is that person a goner once claimed?

can they try to move Bomar to the PS and see what happens, then pull him back if he gets claimed?

by MSP Giant on Sep 4, 2010 7:57 AM EDT reply actions

If he's claimed he's lost

it would kind of defeat the purpose if you dangled a guy out there and then “hah, just kidding!”. That’s the risk involved in trying to sneak someone onto the practice squad.

by bigbluethruandthru on Sep 4, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it'll be

QBs-3
RBs-4 (no ware, gartrell)
WRs-6 (big 3 + barden, cruz, hagan)
TEs-3 (either Beckum is in or they DL him and take Chandler)
OL-8 (Big 5 + Beatty, Andrews, Koates)
DL-10 (Tuck, Cofield, Canty, Osi, JPP, Anvil, Rocky, Kiwi, Alford, Tolly)
LBs-6 (Bully, Goff, Boley, Sintim, Dillard, Kehl)
CBs-4 (Web, TT, Ross, BJ)
Safeties-4 (Rolle, KP, DG, MJ)
STs- 3

That total comes to 51…I think we have the luxury of actually adding 2 players. Or i may be forgetting a couple people which would complicate things.

by maculis on Sep 4, 2010 7:59 AM EDT reply actions

Not sure we can afford to keep 10 DL

And only 8 OL. I expect us to hold on to Petrus. Beckum doesn’t have a roll in this system, that’s cause for concern, if we really need the roster spots

by wangstu13 on Sep 4, 2010 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Also not sure why Bomar would be a good fit right now for some other teams squad?

He doesn’t know their playbooks, signals, calls anything basically. He will not be an impact type of player, let alone a 2nd stringer for another team. Now if I’m confused here let me know, but I can’t see why a player on the practice squad could be snatched up and stashed on another teams practice squad. He would have to make the 53 man roster right? I just don’t see Rhett being able to step into a number 2 role or heck even a number 3 roll, except for the Giants as head familiar with the offense. I think we could get him on the practice squad.

by wangstu13 on Sep 4, 2010 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions

I think you're probably correct...

And with the trade, the Giants have pretty much said “he’s not ready”, and most teams already have their developmental quarterback project, or would want to draft their heir apparent. I think that Bomar has talent, but he’s probably worth more to the Giants to anyone else at the moment. If another team has just gone through the preseason and sees a need at quarterback, it’s unlikely that it’ll be for someone who has never played a down in an NFL game and is from a different team and system.

by Cranky50 on Sep 4, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

good list, but

add Petrus to the OL
add Busing to safety
add Blackburn to LB

remove one DL – either Alford or Tolly. I guess it is Tolly who goes but dunno. Coefield is gone after this year so Aford may be needed and he also long snaps. Tolly is great on special teams and can play LB in some defenses.

Or maybe Koets goes and they keep 8 OL

by MSP Giant on Sep 4, 2010 8:10 AM EDT reply actions

to be honest with you

If any DL goes…I think it’s cofield. Remember, that was the plan last year before all the injuries and he was the last man standing.

by maculis on Sep 4, 2010 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Cofield was never on the way out

until they listened to offers during the draft..even then still not “trying” to trade him.

He’s a RFA, so they’d try and get something for him, but he’s a starter..he’s going nowhere.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 8:30 AM EDT up reply actions

you're probably right

I can’t remember the specifics. But I sorta remember cofield and robbins worried about their jobs when canty and rocky came. The giants said don’t worry, but I thought that was more to get his mind back on playing football. And even though he’s a starter now, I don’t see much of a drop off between him and the other DL.

by maculis on Sep 4, 2010 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

it was Robbins

who’s contract was up and he really didn’t recover from the microfracture surgery after 08.

Alford is still recovery from his surgery.

He hasn’t had enough time to work out all of the kinks in his body. I like Benard’s performance in the preseason but my question with him is will he catty that over in to the regular season. When Alford went down, the DL went soft. Not because of lack of effort (well for some) but because the absence Alford and his contributions. Alford also help us seal that SB win so it would be in the Giants best interest to really think hard when his name comes up in the cutting process.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Also, since we have no cap this year ...

and the brass seems in a generous mood to IR Moss rather than an injury settlement, couldn’t a few guys land on the PUP list (the remaining “Disabled List” option that doesn’t mean they’re gone for the season), like Beckum and Barden.

Then you get to see where you get injuries during first 6 weeks, and who can perform against real competition before you have to commit to the 53-man roster for the stretch run.

Earlier in the thread I made that case for Andre Brown, who is already out for a couple of weeks minimum with his turf toe (and it probably wouldn’t hurt to give the Achilles more time either) as a way of keeping Bomar on the roster, as Sage won’t know the playbook on day one anyways. Certainly a possibility that they get creative with the PUP list.

Keep an eye some of the other potential cuts around the league ...

Justin Hartwig is rumored to be a possible cut in PIT. He’s 31, but O’Hara is 33. If our non-starters were Hartwig, Beatty & Andrews to start the season, I’d feel like we had more depth on the O-line than I can ever remember.

by Shofner85 on Sep 4, 2010 9:07 AM EDT reply actions

Also, the Eagles seem to be doing the same thing to ...

the other Andrews Sister, Stacey. They just acquired a starting guard from the Cards. They paid Stacey a $4.1MM roster bonus this spring, too. Like a mini-Haynesworth.

Hartwig is really bad

I’d prefer Koats who at least knows the offense.

I noticed

D. Ward signed with the Texans. I remember telling my brother when D. Ward was a free agent, I thought the Texans would be a good fit. If he would have signed there to begin with, probably be starting, with Slaton as a changeup and third down back. Let’s not forget he was a 1,000 yard rusher here, but I never thought he would be coming back here, after he was cut, that ship had sailed.

1 thing I do know – is he has 4 games started experience…no matter how he got it, he has it (real game experience)…and not bad stats… avg of a little over 3 tackles a game at safety…and we don’t even have the minutes he played in those games, etc.

If they keep Ware my head will explode, he is another player cannot stay healthy. It is double secret exploding about keeping Beckum. I do not get this at all, throwing valuable roster space after bad. Worse, how can they get rid of Pascoe? The guy is a decent blocker, worked his butt off in camp for them, can catch a bit. And lets go back to they are keeping WARE!!!???#@#$!. They must have a deal in mind since Beckum could not block my Grandma and she is no longer with us. not gonna be around to see the final 53

but just wanted to get my 2 cents in now

Gartrell & Bear – wanted to see them here. Bear may get to the practice squad but Gartrell will get picked up by another team.
3 QBs – no real problem with that, they had 3 in 2007 so whatever similar things I see to that year is fine by me (terrible logic I know)
Beckum & Barden – of course they are gonna be on the team, question is have they gotton any better…. like how to block
D-line – don’t see 10 guys, have no idea who gets cut
LBs – just keep throwing bodies out there, someone will stick sooner or later
Cruz – thats all that needs to be said…. CRUZZZZZZZZZZZZ
RBs – hope Brown is healthy, Ware is not one of my favs to make the team
Specials – looks like we may have a returner and gunner to improve that BAD unit

Thats all for now…. the staff I hope will make the right choices

Why keep Beckum?

I would rather keep Pascoe and let Beckum go. I always thought it an odd decision being that Beckum at Wisconsin was a pass catching machine, and TC doesn’t view the TE that way. So…. Why did we draft him again? We don’t even use the guy to catch passes. By Week 4 will we be complaining about the lack of a blocking TE? Curious to say the least.

the difference I think is he's not Boss

he’s not Shockey either, he’s not a blocker.

I loved the pick when they got him cuz they saw the need for an H-Back that it seems every NFL team but the Giants have and use.

I don’t think they’ve drafted a player like Beckum tho, so I dunno really what past you’re referring to.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

the past I’m referring to is in general, the unwillingness to use the TE’s in the passing game. Boss could and should put up better numbers than he does, but many times he’s an afterthought.

I'd guess the odds of it are under 25%...

Bomar is more valuable to the Giants than anyone else. He’s never taken a snap in a regular season game, and he’d have no knowledge of another system. Plus most teams already have guys to fill the position as the injuries will really start the attrition later on.

All would have been good if Sorgi didn't get hurt. Paying 4 QB's is probably not in the cards.

If Sorgi was healthy, Bomar would have slipped to the PS because he wouldn’t have had so much playing time/exposure and not getting the NFL minimum (i think around 800k). Giving him another year to develop and really compete for the #2 QB slot next year. It was not realistic that Bomar was going to jump Sorgi tis year for the #2, but Sorgi got hurt, Bomar did OK and we traded for a legit #2 in Sage that is getting paid a lot for a backup. I just dont think the team will pay all of this money for backups/development projects all in one year. Hopefully Bomar slips to the PS at a lower price.

by sme120 on Sep 4, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the deal is it takes awhile to develop most quarterbacks...

and Bomar wasn’t viewed as an overnight fix. I think the plan was always to have him two yeas on the PS , but with Sorgi hurt and Eli missing time, he played a lot and improved a lot and drew some excitement.

by EJAAY on Sep 4, 2010 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions

My take

Is that it has to do with the NFL trend these days. Keep the depth on the lines and go thin at the “skill” positions. If you expose lineman with an iota of talent other teams invariably swoop in to check them out up close and see if they might find some depth on the line. Guys like Hagan and possibly even Bomar have a better chance at getting through to be put on the squad.

Cruz

He would never make it onto the developmental squad if exposed. Hagan might. He’s a vet on the fringe who’s been around. Teams tend to be looking for young guys with potental over fringe vets, right? Some times I think it’s as much a game of chess between GM’s to collect the most talent on the 53 plus ten as it is just making it the best final 53 for the team.

With the Sage Rosenfels signing,

and some of these cuts, it really looks like the Giants F.O is pushing for a “win now” mentality and are putting several chips on the table this season. With several “veteran” FA signees and attention spent on the problem areas (Andrews at Guard, Bulluck at LB, Grant at S) they are trying to make a legit run for the Superbowl.

I’m thinking they make one more move before gametime, either a veteran CB or maybe a younger LB with some upside. I’m really hoping for one more LB that can come in and make some plays. Anyone scanning the waiver wire/ FA list for names like these? i.e Dre’ Bly for a CB? (Bly sucks but fits the vet CB mold)

Until the final roster comes out

I don’t think they’ve pushed remotely close to a “win now” mentality.

The Giants will always put the best team on the field while they have a franchise QB. They merely improved units that were sub-par with Bulluck and Grant.

And Andrews seems more like a deal for the future.

As for the trades, the only LB’s with upside on the GIants will be those that are here.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I just hate the "win now" bullcrap statement.

it implies that if they don’t win now, the team is getting blown up and starting from new the next sesason.

Which given who the best players on this team are…is absolutely the farthest from the truth you can possibly get.

They’re win now, win next year, win every year El i Manning is donning the #10 uni.

And they certainly didn’t cut Alford cuz they’re trying to “win now”.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Don't argue with them.

We want to win every season, but this is no way a “win now” season. That would be stupid, the only team in the League that’s a win now team are the Vikings, because Brett Favre may retire.

by jdaking123 on Sep 4, 2010 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

That's on you.

Nobody said they were starting from scratch. However, throwing a blanket statement that every year is “win now” is foolish and naive.

They didn’t keep Alford around because they were unwilling to wait for him to be 100%. They tried that last year with two DTs who were coming back from micro-fracture surgery and they didn’t play well.

"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss

by jdaking123 on Sep 4, 2010 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

well you can jump off the wagon if they don't "win now"

this team is young in many positions, entering their prime for many of them.

They’re in position to win now, and in actuality, foolish and naive would be to think that this team is in “win now” mode, when their QB is not 30 yet.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 4, 2010 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

What you want is that ...

perpetual window the Eagles and Pats seem to have been able to do the last 10 years, but don’t cheap out like the birds if you need a WR to get over the hump as they did for many years (except for the TO debacle).

by Shofner85 on Sep 4, 2010 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly.

you want a team that’s competitive every year.

“Win now” is the Raiders in Grudens’ last year with a bunch of old farts on their last legs.

by Shofner85 on Sep 4, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

you sound like an idiot.

And if we lose what happens? We trade every single player? Our Core are in their prime and young, what should we break? We have holes that could be field as soon as next season. This is no way a make it or break it season.

Only use those words when you’re talking about a old team.

by jdaking123 on Sep 4, 2010 5:55 PM EDT up reply actions

As hard as it may be for you

Read what’s there. Don’t go adding to my words because I’m perfectly capable of speaking for myself.

Did I mention blowing up the team? Did I say that they’d start over? The pressure on Coughlin is greater in 2010 than it was in 2008 or 2009. Like I said, just because the goal is always to win doesn’t mean the pressure and expectation to do so is the same every year.

If the Giants bomb out in 2010, I don’t see Coughlin coming back. My “win now” statement had nothing to do with Eli or young players or the nucleus of the team.

now that's different.

..you keep saying “Giants” win now. But if its for Coughlin to win now, then yea..for HIM, its win now, since his job pedestal will heat up to the point of him possibly being let go after the season…possibly.

For the actual team..no, too much talent in the right places for them to worry about going “all out”.

Tho the fact they don’t have veterans on one year contract makes the idea that this team is even close to “win now” on the field a head scratcher.

does anyone expect these guys to make it? Herb Taylor, Rashad, Brown, O’Hanlon, Williams, D.J. Johnson, Whimper? If not, it would imply that Tolly, Duke and Cruz either make it or are traded for other players, or some combo of the above is.

by Cranky50 on Sep 4, 2010 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

No.

Whimper may have an outside shot, Rashad or DJ Johnson also..maybe. But wouldn’t be surprised to see them all flipping burgers by next week.

I don’t get all the angst over cutting Alford. One big sack in SB was the sum of his contributions to the team. He was never destined to be anything more than a sub that got 10-12 snaps a game. And after the injury, he might not even be that good.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Sep 4, 2010 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions

So, with all the cuts, what becomes of Boothe?

He’s on the PUP list, not IR, so there’s a small chance he could come back from the torn pec injury he sustained in OTAs. Suppposedly, he will be back by mid-October.

That every time a Giants’ player retires, they always go into the media and doubt the Giants potential next season. In 07 it was Tiki Barber, 08 Michael Strahan, 09 no one and now in 2010 it’s Antonio Pierce.

Considering none of our former players doubted us in 09 and we had that bad season, I’m guessing this year we will have a good one.

I would guess alford/ brown and maybe bomar catch on elsewhere. But there has to be bubble guys cut and this is what the coaches thought was the best thing for big blue and the fact is they seem them every day, all we see is games. I’m guessing alfords knee was the biggest factor in his cut. I think bomar, while he did progress, still may just be a 2 yet and browns injury was a factor as well. Hagan became expendable in the trade made last night. Clearly this roster is not set though as the giants will look for a 3rd te on waivers and maybe a new punter.

OL is gonna be huge issue in NFC Beast this year. Skins – awful (sorry DMac). Boys – shaky. Birds – really in flux – Stacey (the other Andrews Sister) traded to Seahawks, and SEA O-Line coach promptly resigns. Eagles O-line is nowhere near gelling at the start of the season.

Right now, I am not happy with these, the TE situation (I assume will change), releasing Bomar, Gartrell, etc. Hope I am wrong but the first two I think we will regret. Sorry to see Alford go but a numbers game. Let’s hope Chandler and T Brown make it to the practice squad.

by UnknownJintsFan on Sep 4, 2010 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

I understand the sentiment on Brown...

but keep in mind that the list of backs who’ve come back and excelled from the Achelles tear is VERY short, and TC seemed to feel he didn’t have the acceleration he had previously.

by Cranky50 on Sep 4, 2010 8:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Hagan I think was expendable cuz of Reynaud, who does everything Hagan does

and returns kicks.

Brown is hurt. The extent of being hurt..who knows? I think that’s what most are missing, that he’s got turf toe and whatever it says for how long he’ll be out…in reality its 16+ games that he’ll not be 100% with that.

I dunno what anyone sees with Gartrell. He goes up against 4th teamers and still doesn’t look all that fast once he reaches the secondary. He’s a decent player but a healthy Ware is better then him.

He’s nothing and proved nothing. Are you looking for Bomar to take Eli’s Job? Eli is only 29, if everything goes well… he’ll be our QB for another 5 yrs(Bomar would be 30). God-forbid Eli went down, Bomar wouldn’t be able to win a game. We’re not going to carry more than 2 QB’s, because Eli is durable.

Gatrell Sucks, and we will get another TE who’s a better blocker than the ones we released. Hopefully Beckum is already a good enough blocker. And Reynaud will do everything Hagan did and more.

Bear, please Bear to the PS. I think he will be picked up though as will Gartrell.

Hate the Hagan move, but...

Really like the statement that the coaches think that we have TWO WR’s that are better than last year’s crew. Wow. We’ll look like the Saints in a year or two.

Can someone educate me?

Difference between cut, waived, released? How much do people get paid on the practice squad? Tnx. When do they release the PS list?

i was just thinking that

great question

Well all the guys off the roster are cut

If a player doesn’t have a certain amount of NFL experience, he’s put on waiver wires where the teams that sucked last year have priority claiming him than the teams who were good last year.
Once you reach a certain amount of experience, you aren’t put on waiver wires and are just a free agent.
Also, if a player isn’t claimed on waiver wires after a certain amount of time, he’s a free agent like the rest of them (“clearing waivers”).
Practice squad players make $5200 a week.

Do we still have DJ Johnson?

I will blow a gut, what the heck are we keeping a roster spot for this guy if so? He has proven he cannot cover his grandma with a blanket.

by UnknownJintsFan on Sep 4, 2010 7:52 PM EDT reply actions

Well.....

Just hope he dosn’t end up this year’s cc brown…….he likes to hit though, good for somethin. We need him on special teams

DJ Johnson

i think JR is looking for a decent vet CB that was dropped and DJ will be gone

Man...our 2009 draft looks like ass now

Other than Nicks, everyone is either cut already or is basically a bust.

Beatty is a bust? Sintim is a bust already? What on earth?

Barden, Beckum, etc….

LGT's resident moderate Yankee hating fan.

by Joe. on Sep 5, 2010 2:57 AM EDT up reply actions

agree the book is still out on Beatty

Sintim and Barden also could just need more time.

Beckum unfortunately is not looking too good. It’s a good sign he made the team but Ed and other beat writters wonder if he’ll be on the squad come week 1.

Either way at this rate Sintim and Barden have not shown the coaches enough….I know they have been derailed by injuries but Sintim has been given every opportunity to be the starting SAM and it looks like Bully is now going to be given that job.

Barden is stuck behind a wealth of talent at WR and maybe JR went overboard w/ that pick….especially considering he moved up to get him.

4 of the other draft picks that year have been cut/waived. There is a chance Bomar and Brown make the PS but at this point you kinda consider those guys after thoughts….not to mention….do the Giants even want to sign them to the PS???

I’m guessing JR is praying Beatty works out b/c at this rate the ’09 draft is looking weak.

Bruce Johnson was also a UDFA so that’s a +1

yea

well around here to some rookies are busts after one year.

by FreeBradshaw on Sep 5, 2010 7:39 AM EDT up reply actions

a tough audience indeed

I even hear some people say cut Manning and keep Bomar. Patience does not seem to be everyone’s strong point

by Spider Lockhart on Sep 5, 2010 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe shouldn't have gone with only "B" players

Beatty, Beckum, Barden, Brown, Bomar. Back many years ago before everyone did everything on-line, I had a friend do a fantasy draft for me based on a list I gave him. He thought the column for ‘bye week’ was my ranking of priority. I had a team of everyone with bye weeks 3,4,5, but were not starters.
Maybe that is what happened here.Maybe they thought “B” was just one down from “A”

by Spider Lockhart on Sep 5, 2010 12:30 AM EDT reply actions

There seem to be enough TE's out there on the waiver wire

Anthony Becht, old man, but good blocker started 10 games last year, has lived in New York before. Spencer Havner, caught 4 TD"s in a four game stretch last year,. Ernest Wilford who has had a few good years and made some big plays for Jacksonville. David Martin, Derek Fine, Sean Ryan. Enough of those guys out there on the waiver wire. Should be one of them that isn’t too old or injured and can be a third TE for a year. Don’t think anyone will be picking up the Bear with these guys out there.
I think we need to get Beckum out there and see if he can block. We don’’t have anything called an “H back”. You have to show us you can block or its hard for me to see how you can be a Giants TE. Let’s get him out there and give him some reps. Otherwise the Bear will be back, and we still might only have two TE’s.

Just heard the news.

Alford and Bomar both gone. Kinda saw the writing on the wall for Bomar. He wasn’t bad but the difficulty that he had getting the ball into the end zone on Thursday is probably what did his ass in. Alford, what can I say. Injuries are a MF. I hope he finds work soon.

by LoNJDTechnology on Sep 5, 2010 2:24 AM EDT reply actions

In light of these recent moves...

Some may even say drastic moves (Alford, Brown, Hagan)….I wonder if more are in store???

Someone earlier was running around saying JR was “saving face” by keeping Beckum. But as we all know that is not true because of; Brown, Bomar, Alford.

I’m wondering if the Giants are looking to move more than just Tolefson? Personally I have not given up on Sintim but do you think moving him to a 3-4 team would increase his trade value? With Calhoun being a Special Teams guy, what about Barden???

What about Beckum? he cant’ block and he seems to be used exclusively as a WR???

Normally i wouldn’t even consider bringing this up….but at 3:21 in the morning the mind tends to wonder….or doesn’t work, one or the other. If we strike while the iron is hot on these guys (Barden, Beckum, Sintim) we can in fact get somethign in return…probably draft picks….but it could be worth it. What did we lose for these Minn players? a Late round pick and a conditional pick???

we could get serious draft picks for those guys IMO….so think about it…but don’t think too hard b/c I’m bent. but feel free to rip this comments to shreads….

Despite your deprevation of sleep Andi,

you just might be right. If there is no way to get Pascoe back, we kinda gotta get another TE. I think somewhere along the lines we will make a quite move here or there that will get us our late round picks back, but the only big move I think that is coming is trading for a fairly known TE with good blocking capabilities

This just in..

Walking farts and Reese peanut butter cup just traded half our team to Oakland for some original members of “Our Gang”….They picked up Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, Butch, but passed on Weezer (he smelled like limberger cheese)..They also hired Miss Crabtree to provide color commentary….Rumor has it that they are trying to acquire “The Three Stooges”….
