What's up to all my true Blue Giants fans out there. If you've read some of my comments on 'lil brother' Manning, you would probably think I hate his guts. Well the the truth is, I really don't. The fact of the matter is, Eli is never held accountable for anything he does to hurt his team. I mean you would think that Archie Manning is the 'Godfather' of the NFL the way that most of the sports analysts sugarcoat the many mistakes that he makes on the football field, and how just because his last name is Manning he is a great QB. There are a lot of QBs in the league who got drafted and were ready to hit that gridiron and show what they were made of. The first thing that comes from Eli on draft day is that ' he would never want to play in San Diego.' "What??!!?? Where do they do that at???" That was a classic display of a spoiled brat who was truly ungrateful for the opportunity to even be playing in the NFL. I still to this day think that was classless.
On the other hand though, it hasn't been all bad for Eli in NY. Of course everyone knows that he brought home a Lombardi Trophy to NYC, and I definitely tip my hat to him for that. However, when it comes to football, I'm kind of a superstitious guy. Now in the '07-08' season I talked so much crap about Eli every time he stunk it up, that as the season went on, it felt like somehow he heard me and started to elevate his game as the season went on. (I know it sounds crazy, but hey, fuhgetabouddit) As a result, they won the Super Bowl and I told myself, 'hey this guy's got a lotta balls." That third down, all-or-nothing, heave ho, to David Tyree was priceless. But now that all the champagne bottles are empty, the confetti has all been swept away, and the dream is over, look where the Giants are now. After missing the playoffs last year, and the way they've started out this year, along with how tough the upcoming schedule looks,.... it's not a pretty sight.
Eli is a good quarterback. I'm not gonna totally trash the guy, but you can't just have a good year statistically, miss the playoffs, start off like this, and think Mr. Knucklez over here is gonna let you live,.... Nope, I don't think so. I'm from Jersey and we don't roll like that. Where I'm from you have to show and prove, and it's all about what have you done lately, and not what you've done before. Its the same way in the NFL. Some guys catch the game-winning touchdown in the Super Bowl, and then the very next season, they are sent packing. Getting back to Eli and his good year last year, those numbers are misleading. The reason why, is a great deal of those passing yards, and a lot of those touchdowns came up in garbage time after the games were already out of reach. And with the weak running game that they had, what else were they gonna do but pass the ball. Look, I know B.S. when I see it.
So, on that note I'm gonna tell you what I think would help Eli go from a good QB to a great one. First, He DEFINITELY needs a new OC. Gilbride is too old, his play calling isn't innovative, he doesn't key in on what Eli's strengths are, he calls for pass plays when the ball should be run and vice versa. All that crap does is put way too much pressure on a QB who's performance under pressure, isn't that good to start out with. Get rid of the fat old guy. Second, Eli needs to work on not being so obvious with the football, like being able to sell those draw plays a little better and not locking in on a receiver so much. I mean, all the defenses have to do is look at Eli's eyes and they can tell where the ball is going. Try being a bit deceptive and not be so 'honest' in what you're planning to do. Third, Eli just has to stop acting like he is playing backyard, two-hand touch football with Peyton and his childhood buddies and make smarter decisions with the football. Especially in clutch game situations, where the play can make you or break you. You are in the NFL now, Mr. Eli.... not Pop Warner.
So on that note let me hear your two cents about why you love or hate the way Eli's performance has been with the Giants so far this season. Maybe you're a realist like me, or you're just another one of those Manning lovers that thinks they can do no wrong, I'd like to hear what you have to say. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion,.... no matter how dumb it sounds.
