Breaking News: Giants Acquire Sage Rosenfels

Sage Rosenfels. (Photo by Chris McGrath/Getty Images)

Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News has the details. It comes down to this.

The Giants acquired veteran quarterback Sage Rosenfels tonight in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings, according to an NFL source. They acquired the 32-year-old, 10th-year veteran and running back/return man Darius Reynaud for a fifth-round pick in the 2011 draft and a conditional draft pick in 2012.
Wow! Jerry Reese strikes in the dark of night.

The return man will likely be the most important acquisition. Unless Eli goes down, and we can’t contemplate that disaster!

WOW

I like it.I was one who would have been ok with Rhett in the backup role butt………Sage has proven to be a good backup qb everytime he has been given the chance to play in a real game. Also it was obvious that we needed a return man and now we have one.So another solid trade by Jerry Reese.

biggest beef with Sage

he may be a vet QB but he still makes dumb mistakes…. case in point…. 2008 Texans vs Colts.

“Rosenfels started in the Texans’ home opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Although Rosenfels had led the team to a 27–10 lead with 8:18 remaining, Indianapolis scored a touchdown to make the score 27–17 with 4:04 left. In that span, Rosenfels turned the ball over three times: the first two turnovers, both fumbles, both led to Indianapolis touchdowns, putting the Colts ahead 31–27; the third, an interception, sealed the Texans loss. Rosenfels was helicoptered in midair after getting hit by three Indianapolis defenders, causing him to fumble the ball.”

The guy was trying to make a play and get the first down. I can’t knock him for that. Might have been ill advised, but ya gotta try. If he doesn’t fumble, he’s a hero. Really did take a lick though. And that’s a funny ass video.

Now does this mean Gartrell Johnson is gone?

by Major on Sep 3, 2010 10:28 PM EDT reply actions

Reynaud is AB sized

so he is no workhorse but as a fourth RB…yeah. His real value is KR and PR as long as the Giants can get him some room to operate

Sage is solid – no more no less.

Both for a fifth and a conditional – two key needs met with one trade. JR has done it again!

Regretably this means Bomar is gone. I do not expect him to pass through waivers.

by MSP Giant on Sep 3, 2010 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

why can't they carry 3 qbs?

They’ve done it before…and they easily make room by getting rid of 2 RBs

by maculis on Sep 3, 2010 10:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Most teams do carry 3 QBs but

Giants do not seem to with Manning being so durable.

I would be fine with that. I think Bomar has potential however I think Sage is signed for another season or two.

by MSP Giant on Sep 3, 2010 10:52 PM EDT up reply actions

From the way Eli and Gilbride were spending time with him on Thursday...

Bomar sure looked like someone they were taking seriously. The only thing that really hurts him is that he didn’t get into the kick return rotation in time.

by Spider Lockhart on Sep 4, 2010 2:30 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't say that

this is not an indictment on Bomar (I think they will keep), just getting an experienced QB who also started games in this league..Personally, don’t know much about Reynaud, other than KR/PR myself, has to be an improvement on what they currently have I am guessing?
So basically, they killed two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Reynaud

Can return both punts and kick offs based on his time with the Vikings. He had two punt returns called back on penalties last year.
Rosenfels is a great game manager with abarely adequate arm, according the the Viking faithful at their SB Nation forum. But as such, he’s a perfect back up in the NFL.
I wonder what happens with Bomar. Stashing him on the roster wastes a needed spot and we’ll be using one for Reynaud as a return specialist. So I think Bomar gets exposed and hopefully makes it onto the practice squad again this year.

by ronjohnson on Sep 3, 2010 10:31 PM EDT reply actions

I really think we go 3 QB now...it's hard to gamble losing Bomar

we need a quality backup we can nurse and he looks like that piece…
I would rather 2 QB, but I won’t complain with 3 – only means we lose another on the 53 man roster…it’s pretty hard as it is now…I’m thinking we luck out with Beckum going to IR (like Ed is speculating)

Heartily Agree

Gartrell has the makings of someone who can pick up the 3rd down blitz, and be a north south runner with no juking or trying to hit the big one on the outside, and contribute on special teams. But I bet they think that they can sneak him onto the practice roster. San Diego thought that already last year when he was fresher in everyone’s mind after being a 4th round pick. I think he sneaks through waivers. And maybe back on the team by mid-season. I am thinking that he is invisible to the rest of the league.

Bomar stays.

I know the Giants have only carried 2 qb’s the past couple of years but I dont see the Giants cutting him. They know at this point he will not pass through waivers and even if he does qb’s get hurt throughout the yr.So he would probably end up getting picked up by one of those teams. Also yea def one of those backs will be gone or maybe both but doubt it.Got to remember there is two spots on this team that were not there last year.Hixon and Moss on IR so there is more room.Renauds would be this years Hixon.Used for a returner and very little on offense.Wont shock me to see Ware traded somewhere like Ryan Grant was.

Not sure about that

I thought that last week as well. But he hasn’t been lights out and he’s still very green. A team would have to waste a spot stashing him on their roster till he picked up their offense and got comfortable. That s a luxury few teams can afford with limited roster spots available as teams struggle to cut down to 53.

by Syler on Sep 4, 2010 12:06 AM EDT reply actions

If the Giants think Bomar

can develop into a back up/potential successor to Eli, I think they’ll try to find a way to keep him. If not, they’ll draft another developmental guy next year. I kind of hate using picks for that slot every year or two.

Everybody talks about Eli’s durability, but that’s mostly just luck. And past history doesn’t mean he’s not going to suffer a serious injury sometime in the future. Quarterbacks become less durable as they get older, so it’s a bit of a gamble to assume he’s going to be able to go out there every single week this year and next year.

by Tucker Fredrickson on Sep 4, 2010 12:34 AM EDT reply actions

Successor to Eli?

Eli is only 29, he has at least 5 more years left in his career and after those 5 yrs Bomar will be 30. The Giants will wait at least 3 more years before they start thinking about choosing a successor.

by jdaking123 on Sep 4, 2010 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I think they keep him

Bomar has progressed a lot, for granted he’s not quite there yet, but he’s closer than we think…I can’t see the Giants letting him go and wasting another pick for a developmental QB that they’ll have to wait another 2-3 years to see if he progresses/or pans out. 1 more year (this time in full dress or inactive on the team) and Bomar will be better for it come next year. Esp. since GIants haven’t had any such luck picking up a developmental QB in the past 5 years.

Happy to be back stateside fellas and posting

That said my shipmate is a huge Vikings fan. So we talked alot of Giants/Vikings football this past month. He had high praise for the KR, and was sad to lose him, but both him and Sage were guys that were expendable for the Vikings and both certainly bolster thr Gmen. So that leaves 51 spots left as I’m assuming both of these guys will make the final roster come the 4th.

by wangstu13 on Sep 4, 2010 1:14 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Seems to me the Vikings are exposing themselves by getting rid of Sage.

Favre could easily go down in game one and never come back. That leaves Tavaris, who has already proven he can’t take the team anywhere, as their only QB.

As for Bomar I deidn’t realize he is already 25 years old. I agree with those who think Bomar is too old to groom as Eli’s successor. In the next three or four years a better option will arise.

Sage is an NFL game proven quarterback.

Sure he blew it at the end of the Indy game but he did put them in a 27 to 10 situation half way through the 4th quarter.. I’m sure he has learned from that. He is light years ahead of Bomar because he has already had success against NFL quality defenses in the regular season.

Bomar has a strong arm but that side arm tendency will probably never be corrected so (as seen in his preseason throws) many of his passes will be blocked. There was never a chance that Bomar would be our #2 quarterback based simply on his pre-season play. Coughlin would never have done that.
