Brandon Jacobs pissed off...
Should Brandon be pissed? or should he really just not make a scene about it and handle it the right way and that means to talk it over with TC and/or JR...
[Late UPDATE: Nothing more to rant about... link here: Coughlin and Jacobs kissed and made up...]
Hey all...
Been a proud BBVer for about a year now...so figured might as well get my first FanPost. I ran into this article from Ohm at ESPN-NewYork and I seriously am a bit concerned regarding Jacobs current attitude. I hope it does not create any internal issues. I am on the fence regarding how he is taking the whole thing, right now, b/c I'm sure I have no clue of what happens on the inside - that could very well have helped him to come to think this way.
And quite frankly, the way I feel about it, I also think that Bradshaw has earned the starting job. Yes, Jacobs had a down year and most likely due to injury - but just because he had a nice contract extension ($$$) does not guarantee him to be a starter. If I have one thing to say to Jacobs, it's - "if you know that's how the NFL is, then that's how it is, but why be so negative, after all, it is a what have you done for me lately league. And even you should know that...I think if he wants to return to form and be the number 1 back, then he has to show and prove and keep your mouth shut. It never helps to bring your discontent to the media".
He also may be just pissed at the way it was communicated (or not communicated) to him. But he should also know this isn't a hand me a job type of team, it's an earn it every game/season thing. I mean after all, TC and JR has said it more times than none, that they are always looking for healthy competition and for others to step up. Bradshaw in my opinion is doing that...Jacobs is doing okay and is right to be upset (in losing his starting position), but show and prove and try to earn it back instead of this.

I read the story a few hours ago
and my first reaction was that he sounds very bitter. It’s been a few hours and I still feel that way. He got all philosophical about how it’s a “cutthroat, backstabbing” business and you’re crazy not to expect it. It’s not like he was cut. This overreaction didn’t just start with him either. He previously said that he was hoping that he wouldn’t get cut and was just trying to make the team. Obviously, he was being sarcastic but you get the idea.
I voted that he should just let his play do the talking. He’s yapped a lot and that’s fine when you’re producing. When you don’t produce, then I don’t want to hear a word out of you. If he feels that he should be starting, then go prove it. I still consider him to be a very valuable member of the offense but I’ve never been one to coddle whiners.
I will say this: poor communication is definitely a problem. If your starting RB gets demoted, a conversation would be nice. Let him know that he’ll still get his carries but you’re changing things up. That’s it. After that, he has to man up and deal with it. However, not saying anything isn’t right. Athletes are all about respect and not telling the player directly isn’t something any athlete would like but especially one of the stars on your team. Now Jacobs has to keep answering questions about something that he really can’t answer.
Keith Bulluck said that he didn’t know what was going on when he was moved to OLB. The media was asking him questions and he really didn’t know what to say. He didn’t sound happy about the lack of communication at all.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
I agree with the communication issues
it could very well be a disconnect with TC and his position coaches…You know TC talks it over with the RB Coach, but then the RB Coach forgets to tell Jacobs about it….or something like that…very similar to some middle mgt who don’t relay the appropriate information sometimes… Probably same thing with Coach Herrmann and Bulluck

The big guy
Personally I’d trade less carries for Jacobs for having him in all 16 games and healthy through the season. We can begin the season with Bradshaw and tossing the ball around a bit, and grind our way into the playoffs with a healthy Jacobs.
Go Big Blue!
that's interesting...
you know how the Giants are supposed to be a running team..yada yada yada…and I know they’ve always been known as that – ever since I was younger…but I really do think they got to utilize most of their offensive weapons…I mean I see them more as being a complete run and pass team if they can just get back to decency with their running game…
That would give them the flexibility to game plan accordingly to their opponents weakness…so like you said, they can pass more here and there and use Bradshaw more now and then Jacobs a lot more in other situations…
although that could be a stretch for KG – who knows

Good
get pissed.
Go out and prove that you’re worth the starting job. Tho it probably would be nice to tell him what they’re doing…unless the point is to not tell him so he gets pissed.
Still think Jacobs is starting Week 1?

well, I have no clue if that will be the case, but I just want him to go back to Okoye-style running

Right!
But remember…Jacobs has said in the past that he has something to prove and he’s going to run angry. I hope he actually does it this time. I’m tried of hearing his “battle cry” during pregame only to hear a pained whimper after a stinger erases him from the lineup.

this is what I'm thinking as well.
Has Jacobs made it through a season yet? Save him for when we need him.

Taking that bet, Tito?
That’s gotta be around $20 — to FedEx and specially pack a pint of Guinness. Go with the draught can, it’s hardier than the foreign export bottle. Actually, your best bet in shipping is probably that newer, sleek bottle draught… I think it’s made outta the same stuff as those relatively new trendy budweiser bottles, like a metal.
Shake on it and set a precedent. I love betting.

Man management
is a key skill when running a team.
You cannot please all of the people all of the time, but I do agree that where possible you should speak to a player re his change in position or starting status.
When BJ gets in the game will he run angry or will he run timid. If the former and he plays with a point to prove then the Coaches have found a way to make him tick and get the best out of him. If he runs timid then again the coaches were right to demote him.
As for Bulluck a coach must have said you are running some plays at OLB – now that may be to learn the playbook or a sign of a full time move to that position – but the decision may not have been made yet so what can the coaches tell him.

My opinion
This is part of what’s wrong with the team at times. Guys believe they should be entrenched/entitled. What’s wrong with playing your way into a starting position? He admitted he didn’t have a good year last year, so….. what do you expect to happen? Does TC all of a sudden not like him or has someone performed better? The more guys have to earn their spots (i.e. playing harder and better) the better the team gets. Hate to be Captain Obvious but apparently some guys don’t understand that.
unfortunately Jacobs seems to not understand it

Sometimes a fire needs to be lit in order to get the proper response out of a player.
Wasn’t it Jacobs who said in training camp that he was willing to do what is necessary for the sake of the success of the team? Now he is upset because Bradshaw appears to have the starting job. Jacobs may have been the first to run in the rotation over the past few years but that dosen’t mean he had the starting job. The Giants honored thier side by giving him the first rep but Jacobs didn’t honor his side by performing. Being a starter reqiures effort from both the organization and the player.
I agree with Jacobs when he says its about the money though. 13 mill of garuanteed money is a lot to put up for sub-par play. That money could be put to good use on a player who can come in and perform well each week. Yeah Jacobs says that he understands that its the nature of the game but if did he would not be angry about the present circumstances.
I commend the Giants for their stance. Make Jacobs look bad and he will have to perform in order to prove them wrong. I like Jacobs. When he was hungry for a contract, he play like a monster. Now that he has it, hes played like a little bitch. Shut up Jacobs and polverize.

Set Jacobs to simmer and let sit for the preseason, when we hit the field next Sunday he should be at a full rolling boil. He’s healthy, he’s angry, he’s going to kill the first person he hits.

Watch the interviews on Giants.com. Bradshaw was interviewed by SNY and he basically admitted that he was the new starter. Either Bradshaw was just assuming it or somebody told him something.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
I don't like the attitude
You never heard Bradshaw (or Ward) whining from the #2 spot. They knew their role and played their part. He should do the same. I like when I see him running up and down the sidelines and getting pumped up when the RBs play big. It would be a punk move if he changes that attitude if he is a #2. He can still be a leader.

Just read some new stuff with Coughlin on the issue
seems this whole thing, as usual, was blown out of proportion. Jacobs was frustrated after the game. He ain’t one to mince words, so you got just that..frustration.
He wants to play, even if its preseason. The Giants were smart in letting him remain healthy, big Boy doesn’t need preseason reps. Him bowling over Brian Urlacher is great and all, but that play was one that triggered pretty much the end of both of their seasons.
Yeah, I heard it on ESPN. It seems that TC spoke with Jacobs and everything is supposed to be cool.
