Admittedly its too early in the season, but since there are people writing about next years draft I think I am in safe territory.
Since our playoff berth will be determined by the NFC alone, I'll just focus on the 16 teams in the conference.
Anyone think the Giants can win the division? I am guessing not many. So it will have to be the Wild Card slots on offer.
Anyway the Giants have done better with a wild card slot than they did with the division title.
A couple of years back the NFC was a kinder place for a mediocre team trying to scrape its way to the playoffs. Usually a 9-7 was good enough to squeak through and the Giants even managed to get in with an 8-8.
But those days are behind us and the NFC North and South have emerged with multiple teams angling for playoff berths, unlike in the past where only the NFC East had that privilege.
Quite simply it would appear that between Atlanta and New Orleans , the NFC south has a lock on atleast one Wild card slot. 4 dvision winners wont be contending for wild cards , and neither will Carolina, St Louis,Detroit, San Francisco.
Thats a total of 9 teams and leaves 7 teams to contend for the one remaining wild card slot. So though being 1-3 will not be the end of the road for the Giants after the bears game, it would make their job of making the playoffs exponentially harder.
