Giants 20, Patriots 17: Did Rhett Bomar Do Enough?
Rhett Bomar tossed a 60-yard touchdown pass to Duke Calhoun late in the fourth quarter to give the New York Giants a 20-17 preseason victory over New England Thursday night.
Question is, did Bomar (11-for-24, 171 yards, one touchdown, one interception) do enough to keep the Giants from going out and finding another backup quarterback?
We will just have to wait and see. Back with the 'Kudos & Wet Willies' in the morning.
In the meantine, chat about Bomar or anyone else you think played his way on -- or off -- the roster.

A tale of two halves...
He looked like he was continuing to improve, but wasn’t ready yet in the first half. In the second half he looked a lot better. Granted it was against second and third string defenders, but he also suffered from some drops of nice passes by guys who won’t be playing for the Giants either. I think the Giants COULD go with him, but I also think whether they do or not will depend upon who ends up being available and at what cost. Overall, I think he improved his position. But he’s battling ghosts, so you never know how high the bar will be.
It looks like Eli is about to give Bradshaw a low five.
Tim Brown is gone. Sorry but he blew his chance.
Did Andre Brown play? I didn’t see him.
Manningham doesn’t need reps. He needs to know the playbook and to watch video so he can read the defense.
Eli threw a really nice deep ball to Nicks. It went incomplete but it was a beautiful spiral. How’s the wind in the new stadium?
I didn’t see a lot from Sintim but I was half-watching the game and half-staring at the culona on the bed.
The O-line played better tonight, especially the backups. Ware picked up the blitz very nicely. I would’ve liked to have seen a few screen passes to him though. That play needs to come back this year.
I really hope Fewell was saving some things because 3rd and long stops was a real bugaboo for the defense. Those conversions keep drives going, tire out the defense, and hurt the defense’s confidence. Fix that.

I believe Andre Brown was a scratch...
with “turf toe”, and Dillard was injured early.
I thought I caught Dillard out there on specials to start the 2nd half?
could be wrong though…maybe it was 2nd quarter.

i thought Bulluck played for Sintim for much for the first half
I also thought Boley mailed it in tonight..not a good performance at all.

Tim Brown
has no hands, might make team as kick returner or practice squad. If Andre Brown has turf toe,
is he ready for season opener. A little good and a little bad from Bomar, not unexpected. I agree
the O-Line looked better, even the backups. When Eli starts running, good things usually don’t follow, oy on that flea flicker.
"Unless your drink is expecting rain, you should probably reconsider.

And one more thing...
Rolle shouldn’t be covering tight ends down near the goal line two weeks in a row for TD’s.
Perry F. needs to rethink that strategy, not a big safety, but he is a playmaker in the open field.
"Unless your drink is expecting rain, you should probably reconsider.

Brown
Actually has good hands. Never dropped a thing during camp, but last night was one of those deals where a guy presses and doesn’t do what he is capable of. No way he makes the team.
I hear you
it only matters what you do between the lines, on gameday, who is going to be the kick returner? There are not a lot of options, he could be a practice squad player, along with Calhoun.
"Unless your drink is expecting rain, you should probably reconsider.
STAY THIRSTY my friends".
Maybe they could keep Tim Brown
Maybe they could keep Tim Brown, and see if they can get something for one of the receivers sitting at 2-6 on the depth chart. Frankly, I’d be willing to call up the Rams and see what they might send back to us for one of the receivers we aren’t going to cut.
Actually, they can’t trade Hagan because he’s a good special teams player, but they could certainly part with Manningham, Barden or Cruz for appropriate compensation. As much as I like Cruz, I also realize that he might fetch a pretty decent draft pick at this point.
manningham...
maybe there is some weight to the wonderlic test…if he can’t read, how can he read a defense

Can we get off of the “this guy is dumb” bit? It’s old and tired. Was he too dumb to catch 57 passes and 800 yards last year? There is some serious bandwagoning going on here.
this.
how dumb are people gonna feel for thinking about trading him when HAM is torching DB’s from all over the field?
what does it mean?
“this.” I believe its you and maybe andiamo using this expression… I’m not getting it.
Go Big Blue!
I forgot that about Andrews
The guy is a mauler. I don’t remember him being so physical on the Eagles. Obviously, he always was since he was an All-Pro but I never looked for him before. Now that I’m actually looking for him on the field, I can see what makes him so devastating when he’s right.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
the giants might have gotten a steal by picking up andrews
which also means i think seubert will not be starting this year. whether its beatty that pushes him out of the starting lineup or andrews, hes gonna get benched. im fine with that though, because we’ll have a solid backup who can play guard and center.

Bomar is our backup...
He’s plenty good enough for the Giants backup QB. Great arm too.
Not surprised but shocked Danny Ware was back and averaging 5.5 yds per carry. This is good news because while Bradshaw is their best back, Ware is the most talented.
Andrews is awesome. He will become a Giants fan favorite very soon. Giants fans know how to make a player feel welcome (just like Philly fans, LOL) and he will stick.
Goff very active tonight but Coughlin sent him a message by keeping him in the entire game and on STs too.
Boss is still the Boss.
Sintim is a BUST. But you already know my feelings on him.
Dodge is progressing very well indeed.
Tynes—seeing more touchbacks and stops inside the 20 on kickoffs. Nice.
Ware is the most talented?
That demands explanation, it’s not obvious that it’s true.
I think Bomar is our guy..He's tough..
And how about Goff guys?..and Gartrell?…Geez, alot of guys tonight made the ‘turks’ job harder !!..I was very pleased with how they all played tonight..Where the hell did Calhoun come from?..man, that crew just gave the coaches alot to think about in the last pre-season game..If they turn it up a notch, which they will I see us locking up the division..I watched Dallas and they still look awful..The skins are awful..and Philly looks awful..Who (analysts) in their right mind could pick us to be a wildcard..Even my man Simms picked Dallas…bullshit.

Best way to speed Bomar's development is make him caddy Eli, learn the thinking part
He’s got a pro arm
Unless someone surprising gets cut it’s the move.
Because bad habits are hard to break, Bomar's severe side arm slings will probably haunt him (and us) as long as he plays.

I watched all night waiting for one of his throws to come over the top
but they all came out the side. Didn’t Steve Young have a tendency to throw like that, unless he was chucking it way down field?
That's all true, and he may be a career backup because of it
But as guy off the bench, he has the arm strength, mobility and moxie to succeed. But he needs to have the opportunity to grow.
I agree with ya and hope that we never have to see him do more than mop up.
Based on what I’ve seen in the pre-season, I’m more comfortable with Bomar than I would have been if we went with an untested backup from the Colts. He may have years in the league , but doesn’t equal playing time / experience /skills.
He does have a strong arm and I think he is a gamer.
Unfortunately on nearly every throw he makes he gives up about 2 feet in height. It won’t take long for defenses to adjust to that.

bad habits
same with Tebow. During games he reverts back to his old looooong throwing style.

Bomar will be pretty good if he can get near the same reps next year after carrying the clipboard. Could be trade bait if the front office were so inclined. Seems like Reese hit this one out for a 5th (?) round pick.
I want him to be the back up
But talking about him being so good that he’s trade bait is getting a little too optimistic, isn’t it?
Andrews coming on makes the whole OL very interesting
If he is best and can play LT, what do you do with Beatty?
Do you keep Andrews at G to get Beatty in?
Good problem to have
I don’t comment very often, but I read daily. I am really trying not to be negative, I loved what I saw tonite, but did everyone see the first play of the game? I just wonder why this team cannot seem to cover the middle of the field, and does everyone think that will get fixed? It seems to be the biggest issue on defense.
+1
That has been and still is our biggest “hole”
We will continue to get gashed by every TE and screen pass in the 7-12 yard range over the middle of the field. I think one way to fix it is to not let these TE go free release. Jam them at the line so it gives our D-line and extra 1 or 2 seconds to pressure the QB.
Manningham looking lost
But did have a nice punt return. Calhoun open all night but Bomars inaccuracy cost him a few more grabs. He at least gets practice squad and pushed Brown out the door. The drops didn’t help.
I keep Bomar as number 2 as he does have talent. I liked the play of our backup oline. Koets looked decent starting. Bender looked tough. Eagles will regret Andrews going to NY.
Kickoff coverage still awful as we need that one guy who will just kamikaze after the ball carrier. Kehl showed great speed running down the wideout on one of the NE big plays. Goff looked much more decisive and tougher. Boley tiptoeing around. Sintim ?
Carl Banks gets a Kudo. I like his insight as color man.
Tynes and Dodge both showing strong legs. Can’t screw up those extra points though. Snap was high.
Good work by Gartrell as well.
5 wideouts, end around, flea flicker. Who are you and what have you done with Kevin Gilbride. Toned it down for Bomar
Good observations..I agree..and Cruz did a good job also..
Kick coverage is a problem still, but they’ll figure it out..I thought Tynes did a good job and Dodge seems to have started to find a groove, gotten rid of the jitters..but I give huge kudos to Goff, Calhoun and Bomar..Actually they all looked good tonight..There were mistakes, but overall they all looked good..that goal line stance was awesome…there is nothing in football that brings a team together on the same page as that does..Doesn’t matter it was our second stringers, it fires the veterans and first team starters up also..It fires the whole team up.
"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"
As a constant critic of Tynes I have to give him a lot of credit for improving so much so fast.
I never thought he could improve his height and distance as well as he has.
As for Dodge, Coughlin should get a kudo for sticking with him long enough for him to get more comfortable with punting in the NFL.
I’m still not sure it’s safe to go with only Bomar as backup. I bet Coughlin brings in a veteran for insurance.

Tynes strengthened his leg a lot during the offseason, to me a pleasant surprise!

How was Manningham looking lost?
He had one ball thrown his way the entire game.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
And two targets against Baltimore
That’s 3 passes in his direction in the last two games. None of the three passes were accurate either.
By the way, compare that to Smith, who had eight targets against Baltimore, and Nicks, who had 12 targets in the last two games.
"I was going to separate from this guy and make him look silly." -- Kevin Boss
I am a Bomar booster, and honestly he is not ready
The guy is improving. He telegraphed a little less tonight. He made more plays. But he is still inaccurate, has the batted balls and simply needs more time. Rhett Bomar has not been on the active roster for a regular season game yet! So he needs to make the roster but he should not be the backup. Will the Giants go with 3 QBs? They should, and then deactivate him on gameday as one of the 8 that does not dress. That is where he belongs right now.
Andy I disagree..
Did you see him on the sidelines with Gilbride and then Eli? This kid is going to be a good one..He won’t pass thru to the practice squad that’s for sure..They need to keep him as the back-up…Did you see the big grin Eli had when Bomar zippered in that TD pass to Calhoun (again where did Calhoun come from all of a sudden)?..That Bomar is a good, tough, quick QB.
"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"
I agree with you that Bomar is a keeper.
But preseason is a little different than gameday and like all rookies he is likely not to be able to come in and do what a backup has to do in a desperate situation. I think it would be ugly right now if he was called on to perform at a critical time. And that side arm delivery is going to cause problems.
In my opinion Coughlin has to get someone with real game experience for this year and nurse Bomar along until he can perform under stress.
by giant fan since 57 on Sep 3, 2010 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions
If Bomar needs experience
How is he gonna gewt that if we get someone else to be be the back up QB and he dosent even get the chance to dress for most games.
Then we will have the same problem with him next year. "aw we need someone with experince of regular season NFL " how does he get this experience if we arent allowing him to get it?
Calhoun
should make the practice squad, unless somebody else grabs him? You can’t teach speed.

Yes
You cant teach speed or size this guy is tall too.Id say he will make the practise squad He will have a chance to compete better for a place next year. Mr Barden better watch ur back. Brown may be headed for the practise squad too because of his reurns he was pretty good returning kicks

They were playing ‘hardballs’…
"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"
If nothing else, Bomar has come a long way from last year
He has consistently improved. Even TC has said that. Does that make me feel comfortable if Eli goes down? No, but who available WOULD make you feel completely comfortable if Eli goes down?
Bomar is our (#2) guy. He has a lot of upside, the right attitude, is cheap and knows the playbook…mostly. Unless someone leaps and bounds above him is available after Saturday, and is cheap enough, we’ve got our backup of the future.
And as far as his performance tonight, it’s not all about the stats as we know, but Hagan dropped a TD and T.Brown dropped that gorgeous pass over his shoulder that would have been, what, 35-40 yards? Yes, he was a little off, thus leading to his own incompletions and int’s, but technically his stats should have been padded a little more. At least the coaches will know that when they evaluate the film. I thought he did pretty well considering the pressure that was put on him for this game. I mean, he did come back and win the game, as “meaningless” as it was, right?

He did enough.
Whatever the problem was in the first half, he corrected and came out and played well enough th win the game. Bomar did good. My answer is yes.
A game of Chess is like a sword fight....you must think first....before you move.
Yes
Bomar did enough. I dunno what the requirement would be for enough to the Giants, but I think he did enough.
They ain’t carrying 3QB’s, its waste of a roster spot for the #3. And it’d probably mean the end of Bomar’s Giants career if they try and put him on the PS. So I don’t think there’s any question they should keep him as the backup.
And if he actually had to play, hopefully just in garbage time when Eli’s already demolished the competition, I think Bomar can make plays. His running skills remind me a lot of Jake Plummer.
I think if they kept him around long enough…he may have a bit of…Tony Romo..type skills? Yuck.
Impressed
In all this talk about Goff and Sintim, did anyone notice how well Kiehl played? That tackle on the running Pats receiver was really Kiehl coming from nowhere at an extra-ordinary linebacker speed and he tackled both the Giant defender and the Pats receiver-plus the stuff of the 4th and 1- those are real plays. Maybe he’s finally ready after two years of disappointment.
Sintim was weak.
Still problems with the def backs, but I think Fewell will have worked out some kinks by Panther game.
Def line was strong, but not devastating. But, Pats O-line was near perfect.
Joseph, in particular and JP looked quite good.
Special (coverage)teams were almost 100% awful. Anyone, and I mean anyone, could gain yards against these guys.
Receivers were pretty good, but Hagan did drop a sure Bomar TD; Cruz dropped at least one easy Bomar pass and Tim Brown, regrettably, lost his chance to make the team. No throws to Smith? They better figure out what to do with Barden, ‘cause he’s not improving.
Good to see for the first time this year that the tight ends were involved in the game.
O-Line looked excellent, including Koets, by the way. As others have mentioned, Andrews was terrific. Didn’t note anything exceptional from Beatty, but the back-up left side was opening holes throughout the 2nd Half.
Running was good- any reason Jacobs did not have a carry? Ware seems to have made the squad, along with the injured Brown.
Gilbride even showed some creativity- frighteningly enough.
And Bomar was fine. He did his job as a back-up, improving each series- no need to go outside the organization right now. Would you rather have Bomar or Dixon, with whom the Steelers are saddled now? He moves well, has a nice touch with the ball, and had a few easy catches dropped. Announcers seemed to be a little against him, but he did the job a back-up should do.
Remember, the back-up can’t be as good as the starter, or he would be starting, and if he can fill in for a game or so, well, that’s perfect. If the starter is out for an extended period, ( as many of you have said already) it doesn’t matter, hope for luck and a devastating defense and/or move on to 2011.
Good game all in- except for special teams coverage and pass defense in the middle.
We really
need to find a couple players on special teams though, our kickoff coverage is still brutal, like
the parting of the Red Sea!
"Unless your drink is expecting rain, you should probably reconsider.

maybe the answer to the starting 3 LB riddle
is Kehl-Goff-Boley?
Kehl did play very well last night.
He did
but I think we are gonna carry 7 LBs and he might not even make the team
by michaelkhan3 on Sep 3, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions
Kehl
Had some good plays, but surounded them with aweful play. He was out of position, whiffing on tackles and blowing coverage all over the place. Kehl was one of the LBs I was least impressed with. A couple of flashy plays doesn’t cut it if you can’t consistently do your job around those. What we saw out of Kehl last night is what we have always known. The guy has a lot of raw athletic ability (like being able to run down that WR), but he can’t put it together play after play to be a reliable option.
Keep Bomar
He is still a raw talent. That side arm sling will be batted down way too often. He needs to set up to throw better, and of course, lack of pocket awarness was opresent. These are not fatal flaws IMO.
So...
Good stuff going into week 1:
The O-Line is in decent shape, and may have added an oustanding new player to the mix with Andrews. It sure would make those short yardage plays a lot less frustrating if they have the option to run behind Snee OR Andrews and be pretty sure they’ll get the yard or two needed.
A LOT of depth on the DL. Tired offensive lines are going to be abused by the Giants late in games, when guys like Tuck or Canty just got a nice rest because the Giants 4th DE or DT are good enough to start for most teams.
The top two WR are flat out excellent, and the next four have enough ability to really push each other for playing time.
The running backs are healthy. Bradshaw looks really strong, and verrrrry dangerous. If Jacobs gets hurt, both Brown and Ware look like they can play and be good NFL backs.
Kenny Phillips. (Yay!) Actually, if they can all get on the field for the same game, the Giants defensive backs are pretty darn good.
Scary stuff going into week 1:
Special teams. The coverage and the returns are both WAY too inconsistent for my liking. I’m fairly confident that this team will give up at least one long return every game, and that they’ll start at least one drive from inside their own 20 after a kickoff. (To be fair, losing Jones and Tracey from the draft class certainly didn’t help this problem, nor does the fact that Cruz makes the team because he’s a good receiver, yet he’s not very good at all on the special teams where they really need him.)
STILL learning the new defense. I still have faith in the new defensive coaches, but I’m reserving the right to be scared that players will still be thinking more than playing.
Will 3 linebackers step up and become reliable?
Note: I have nothing to say about the quarterbacks. I think Eli is terrific, and I continue to think it really doesn’t matter who the backup is. If the backup is in the game, we’re screwed.
Much more interesting than a typical final pre-season game ...
OL – Andrews held up well, but Beatty got blown up on a bull rush by the scrubs that got Bomar sacked. Could be last year’s OL starting again this year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Andrews gets in there by mid-season at LG.
WR – Brown blew it, but maybe practice squad. Cruz up and down, but I think he’s got a roster spot.
RB – Ware and Gartrell both looked good. Which one goes ?
QB – Bomar should be a solid back up to Eli … in 2011. I just can’t see TC feeling comfortable with him going in to win a game for us this year. Still too much mental development ahead of him. So, I’m disagreeing with those that say we only carry 2 QB’s. Don’t think we will trade for Sage or Matt, but do think we’ll sign someone who’s started NFL games after the cut down.
How about Kenny Phillips
When he was playing he was smacking people. I watched the Ravens game the other day and noticed that Phillips caused a fumble that went unseen by the Ravens broadcasters. Another big hit. He looked pretty good last night. So did Goff and Dodge.
Bomar looks like the back up quarterback that he is. I’d keep him.
