Report: Giants Work Out Bly, Other DBs

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger says the Giants worked out a bunch of experienced cornerbacks Tuesday, including 11-year veteran Dre' Bly, Brian Witherspoon, C.J. Wilson and Cletis Gordon.

I'm not going to get all fired up every week when the Giants work guys out, and I know nothing about these guys except what is in MGs report. We'll see if they sign anybody from this group, but it's good to know they are investigating options at a position where they are thin.

What about the guys on the PS?

They have some DBs there, why not move one up if they are good enough? If not, why keep them on the PS?

NFL teams

Always use Tuesday to work out available guys. Maybe they find a guy who looks better than one of the guys on the PS. It’s due diligence, really, because you never know when a need will arise.

Aaron Ross

Holds one of the biggest keys for the Giants…

When healthy, he is a very good cornerback, I contend he is better than TThomas.

However, Kris Jenkins is an incredible player too – but he never plays because he is always hurt.

It does not matter how good you are, if you don’t play it does not help the team.

The bright sight is Phillip Sparks overcame a similar moniker, he was always hurt his first few years, then he eventually developed into a solid player and remained healthy. Lets hope Ross can do the same although the current injury he has is one he will have to manage and play thru, its not going to just suddenly heal.

Disagree

IMO Thomas is a better CB than Ross. Thomas is establishing himself as a very good corner. I doubt Ross would replace Thomas when/IF he returns healthy.

Question

Thomas had like 5 tackles in the game, right?

Now I ask you this, one, two, if not three of those tackles, he gave up big 3rd and longs where he let the guy catch the ball in front of him, run past him at the first down marker, and then tackled the guy after the first down.

Are those “good” tackles or “bad” tackles? What does the tackle stat mean? Thomas made some good plays in the game, but to me he also blew some tackles and stops.

I am not completely sure, but when the Panthers were down near the goal line on like the 15, and Steve Smith was out wide left, Moore audibled when we saw the Giants corner standing nearly on the goal line giving Smith a 15yd cushion. They threw it out there, Smith got about half the distance and then was spilled out of bounds head over heels. How does a corner give that big a cushion on Smith in that spot? If you run that play 10 times Smith scores on 6 or 7 of them.

If you can recall, CC Brown had like 10tackles all the time – yeah, because his man caught the ball on every possession and then he tackled them.

Healthy, I think Ross is a better corner, but he is NEVER healthy so if I had to choose one I would choose the guy that can play week in week out. But on overall i think Thomas is good but not very good or great.

by dubsrub on Sep 15, 2010 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

There's not a DB

in the league that’s going to make that one-on-one tackle and keep the WR short of the FD. The WR has a huge advantage.

You got to give the WR credit also. Like the DB the WR is trying to make a play. Thomas made the correct play. He needs to squat and make the tackle. Thomas made a good play. If he doesn’t make that tackle the WR gains another 10 years.

Fans like you expect a player to make EVERY single play. It doesn’t work that way. He’s going against a player that also trying to win that battle. It’s a 50/50 battle.

Get a friend. Have him run towards you while you’re standing still see if you can prevent him from gaining the first down. Then do the same thing but run towards him. See if you can still make the tackle.

how do you know

bq/ How does a corner give that big a cushion on Smith in that spot? If you run that play 10 times Smith scores on 6 or 7 of them.

Have you ever considered he was giving that cushion because that was the defense called? We don’t know the defensive play call.

He needs

to become a better tackler, he does not wrap up, and does allow first downs, good point.
You can say what you want about the Jets, but their DB’s wrap up people before the first down markers.

Either way

not comfortable with Bruce Johnson as a nickel back, didn’t look too good out there,
better hope Ross is available this week or use three safeties. Peyton WILL find Bruce Johnson, not Matt Moore.

Bruce Johnson

I haven’t seen or heard much about him this year, but he played pretty well last season. With our improving safety play and cornerbacks as good as Thomas and Webster, I think Bruce Johnson is more than serviceable as the nickel back.

Not

against Peyton Manning, as I said, didn’t look too good last week against a very average QB! Glad you are comfrortable with him though.

If you expect the team to have 3 shut down corners

expect to be disappointed. Bruce Johnson isn’t any worse than most other nickle corners.

But he has made plays in the past

Bug plays at that.

Leading me to believe he’s actually better than most other nickle corners, esp considering it’s only his second year.

Bruce Johnson did not practice Wednesday because of a 'knee injury'

With Ross and Johnson banged up this may be why they are trying out DBs and not for a lack of confidence in Bruce.

I believe Ross

is the most talented of our CBs. He has speed. He can tackle. He’s played inside and outside.

If only he could stay healthy.

Ross is very talented and very capable. He showed that in his rookie year.

TT has done very very well. He has delivered and stayed on the field.

It is very close but under optimal conditions I would take Ross in a 1:1 coverage scheme. It think he is just a bit faster, hits just a bit harder and has just a slightly better nose for the ball.

But it is a moot point. He is never healthy. And when he is healthy he will be the nickle trying to prove to TC that he ought to start.

dre bly

As a #3-4 db is great… he was overrated in DEtroit which got him to denver with very high expectations starting along with champ baily. But with him coming in as a nickel db, he would possess the quickness to help cover the underneath routes that seem to plague our defense in the past. And if Ross comes back(when he does, if he does, and for how long?) We would have a daym good depth chart in the defensive backfield.

good point

but as far as his age, and where he is at.. for a team buildign for the future.. I would think they would keep the younger slightly less talented player with higher ceiling vs bly who isnt getting any better.

it could go both ways… but he is better than dj johnson imo. and johnson isnt really showing that big of an upside

I don't like DJJ...but def. agree he would be a lot better on ST than Bly

simply on the youth factor, and prob. better athletically…I just can’t stand his coverage skills…it’s early enough for him to not be another CC and I have faith that Fuel knows his secondary well…afterall, he did help the Bills out tremendously in that area specifically

Did anyone see the end of the Yankee game last night?

Wow. What a throw from that kid in right. Thats the thing about the Yanks that

I think TE is a position we’re a bit thinner at than DB. You’d think they’d be looking for another TE, at least for the PS now that Pascoe is on the regular roster.
