Giants Training Camp: Saturday Morning Practice Report
Here is your update from Saturday morning's practice during New York Giants Training Camp at the University at Albany.
Let's start with some injury news.
- Steve Smith did not practice, but it appears he will be OK. Mike Garafolo tweeted this a little while ago.
Practice over. Steve Smith walking by. Asked him how he made out w the MRI. "Just a minor strain. I'll be all right." - No word yet on Rich Seubert. That will likely come later today.
- Here is today's example of why the NFL is a hard place. Backup offensive lineman Reuben Riley injured a knee Friday night. This morning he got cut. Offensive lineman Cliff Louis, who was with the Giants during training camp in 2009, was signed to replace him.
- Shaun O'Hara was going some individual drills. He is expected to return to practice Monday.
- Guy Whimper worked with the first unit at left guard again today. I didn't see Will Beatty take any first-team reps. Whimper, of course, came up lame with what looked like a left ankle injury and had to take himself out during an 11-on-11 red zone drill. No word on him right now. He was replaced by fifth-round draft choice Mitch Petrus.
Here are some on-the-field notes.
- Let's start with one that I actually missed, but that I know you will find interesting. I do. Mathias Kiwanuka took some snaps at linebacker today. Don't know what that might mean, but it's something to keep an eye on as camp progresses.
- I don't know how he makes this team, but Tim Brown just keeps on impressing. The 5-foot-7, 165-pound undrafted free agent from Rutgers made a beautiful sideline catch on an out from Eli Manning, stretching to pull the ball in and keeping his feet in bounds with Courtney Brown defending. Later, Tiny Tim (I couldn't resist) got his first chance to return punts. He burst untouched through the middle with three or four great cuts, flashing elusiveness and the speed that got him invited to camp in the first place.
- Terrell Thomas was beaten deep by Mario Manningham and tweeted that he was not happy with his practice.
- Rhett Bomar threw a horrible ball into triple coverage trying to hit Bear Pascoe. Sha'reef Rashad came up with the interception. Jim Sorgi threw a beautiful long ball down the right sideline to Victor Cruz.
- Here's big news. Rocky Bernard actually made a play today, batting down a Sorgi pass during a red zone drill.
- Giants scored a few touchdowns during that red zone drill today, which actually had the ball placed at about the 10-yard line. Manning hit Mario Manningham for a score on a slant in front of Corey Webster, Sorgi hit Scott Chandler over the middle and Andre Brown sliced through the defense for a score following a nice lead block from a pulling Petrus.

Petrus, Petrus, Petrus
Seeing that name a lot. One would think that it might bode ill, but he seems to be doing okay. Could a rook, a fifth or sixth rounder, a guy who came out of nowhere actually see a lot of playing time during the season, or even start?
Well ...
A few days ago I would have said no. But, if Whimper is hurt Petrus is next in line.

Whimper's last camp?
I would think that Whimper has to be on the bubble – four years without showing much. Same with Adam Koets. Have you seen anything which would give the Giants a reason to keep either?
Also – Tim Brown makes the team by making Sinorice Moss redundant. If you’re going to keep a little guy, why not keep one who can make plays, especially if he can return kicks or punts, something Moss never mastered.

I hope Tiny Tim ends up being a faster and better David Meggett on STs

Whimper might always be a backup
and if Petrus can step up and get in then why not. I think he and Snee bring the right attitude to the OL.
I'm with you on that.
Would be strange to see TC entrust the job to a rook, though.
He's been out there
and seems to be doing OK. He’s more of a space eater than I guy who is actually going to make a lot of noticeable plays.

THE Steve Smith
I am glad to know that the Steve Smith’s injury is not that bad. As far as I am concerned our guy is the real Steve Smith. He will burn Panthers the team of the other Steve Smith.
Being a New York Football Giants fan or a player is not a label but it is a calling!
Let Us Start A Movement: Bring Back Tyree and Get Rid of Moss!
Nice to see Manningham show up
He needs to visit with Carolina’s Steve Smith. Smith is a short guy but he’s stocky and tough. Manningham needs to bulk up a little so he can handle the punishment.

I see Eli is still slow with his passes
From MG: “On the first play of team drills, WR Mario Manningham got deep inside CB Terrell Thomas for a deep post from QB Eli Manning. It wasn’t the prettiest past from Manning and Manningham had to wait for it. Maybe it got hung up in yesterday’s wind.”
Eli is killing me.

you and me been saying that since day 1
I can’t blame Eli too much b/c he was used to throwing to slow ass Toomer, Burress, and Shockey for so long….even Smith really ain’t a burner.
He’s got to get more chemistry with Mario.
Patience
It alway takes the offense longer to get in sync. Eli will be fine.

This was a problem last year too
Manningham is really quick out of his breaks. Eli has to be on point with the ball. When he’s late and Manningham has to wait a second or two for the ball, the DB recovers and the ball gets knocked away or Manningham gets lit up while waiting.

Good to hear from you, pot.
i thought maybe you went AWOL with Bobbiblue.
Why not put Kiwi in there at LB for some snaps?
I hope it ain’t permanent, or that it has anything to do with Sintim not impressing…but why not?
If its just a rotational look…that’s some breath of fresh creativity that Fewell’s fueling into the D.
Get these guys out on the field.
"...breath of fresh air...."
That’s how I see it.
Adam Schefter on ESPN Radio
said that the Giants don’t take a backseat to anybody in the NFC as far as talent is concerned. I agree with him wholeheartedly.

re: the O-line,what ever happened to...
…Kevin Boothe? I haven’t so much as a peep yet about how his ginormous, chewed-bubble gum ass is performing in camp.

Paul Schwartz is reporting
That Fewell is using Kiwi as a LB in a “Big Base” formation….which takes Boley off the field and puts Kiwi at LB in order to help against the run.
Boley’s weakness is stopping the run….I have no problemw ith this at all.
Plus Kiwi is still a DE….he’s not changing positions….it’s just to help out aganst the run in running situations.
I'd like to see it in some pass rush situ's too
Kiwi and Sintim at the LB with JPP Tuck Osi and Canty up front? All those lions on the field at once, they’ll be chewing through the bones of a helpless QB in no time.
Tim Brown
I’m thinking (and maybe hoping) Tim Brown is going to make this team and return kicks.
Gene Payne
Kiwi instead of Boley
If I recall Boley lines up behind Osi.
As Osi is getting upfield and neglecting his run reads this leaves Boley exposed to whatever is coming through the gaping hole.
So I believe Kiwi is in to protect against Osi and not Boley.

good observation
That’s what I was hoping for a couple days ago, when Osi got burned on his side…I knew Fuel will be fixing his schemes to help Osi out and the rest of the defense for that matter..

drinkin the Koolaid
I know it’s a second stringer going against him, but JPP consistently abused Bender play after play after play after play… you get the idea.
I’m hoping they can get him some reps against the first team to see what we really have here.
He should and will
just a little time to see what he can consistently do against reserves..build him up slow is the goal. Dont want him to be overwhelmed too early
"they try to do what he do, and been where he's been, but they get folded in two.....he's the dude"
There is a problem with the perception of Moss not being productive and that is, it’s false…he has been productive when given a legitimate opportunity. If we would just put him out there and call his number, he would be much more productive.
CASE IN POINT
THANK YOU BIGBLUEBALLIN
Nobody remembers his ‘08 start against the seahawks? I wanna say 7 catches 144 yds and maybe 2 tds? the kid can play receiver. The only thing that baffles me is why he hasn’t received more opportunities. I just wish he was more of a playmaker in the return game!
I've always thought Moss is a very efficient WR...only problem is his ST play
and as a 4/5/6th WR he’ll get most of his opps on ST & unfortunately he muffs too many punts. But WR he’s always been pretty good – but once again I don’t know how well he blocks at WR also…he would have to do that on occasion.

Eli
Why does it seem so many people are down on Eli? He’s not Peyton and neither is any other QB in the league, but he has as many SB rings. 27tds,14 ints and over 4000yds whats a guy gotta do?
i dont see anyone down on him..
