Plaxico a Giant again??

Just found this link on Yahoo Sports stating that Plaxico is likely to be released from prison in the next few weeks and that the Giants might be interested in re-signing him...

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/rumors/post/Giants-interested-in-re-signing-WR-Burress;_ylt=AtDRmi26W0wNCR0rEN7vXdBDubYF?urn=nfl-260132

Star-divide

I'm hoping the quote from Reese is really nothing more than playing the media game because realistically what can Plaxico bring back to the team - barring another serious injury to one of our other WRs.

Personally I could only see something like this having a negative impact on the team given his previous attitude and given how much our young guys have developed at WR and that surely signing him could only take time on the field away from these guys...okay, maybe his attitude has changed while he's been in prison but just can't see this being a positive move - especially when it sounds like the big problem from last year, i.e. the defense, are already buying in to Fewell's methods and schemes from what I've been reading which will hopefully help turn around this team's fortunes

Would be interested to know whether you guys think this kind of rumour holds any water and whether you'd be interested in getting Plaxico back in a Giants uniform...I think I've kind of made my views felt but would like to know how others out there feel about this...

LOLNO

seriously? A guy who spent two years in jail, becoming a mid-30s WR who is not going to be anywhere close to optimal shape? Never.

Agreed...

but so far only one third of the votes from people on this website (but obviously none of us are JR and TC) are an out and out ‘No’ to having him back which I find somewhat surprising…

Why?

the team has very good young WRs. Aside, from an injury he no longer has a role with the Giants.

also

would Plax be subject to any additional punishment from the league. I know he was suspended at the end of 2008 by the Giants.

If he can't find a job anywhere else

Than I wouldn’t have a problem with it. Everyone deserves a second chance…

We don’t need Plax, but if he doesn’t catch on anywhere else I’d be fine with him coming back here, he really wasn’t a locker room cancer or bad teammate for the most part, he always played hurt, never complained for more touches, I’d be fine with him coming back.

He wasn't

a TO type of cancer but he did cause problems. He was late and disciplined many times. The Giants just kept it quiet.

just makin' sure

honestly, it would be pretty cool if he did come back….(the right way of course).

But does he want to come back?

Giants tried to re work his contract so he could get the money he lost from being suspended…and he didn’t even want to entertain that….and consider this was a man who was about to be sentenced….and he basically said “no, i don’t want your money”….

so why would he want to come back now?

by andiamo708 on Aug 4, 2010 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

He was acting like an honest person

who realized what he did was wrong and he didnt want to take anyone’s pity money that he did not earn… He deserved to be suspended and he realized that after the fact. I’m sure money wasnt his issue he was an NFL player who has made millions for many years similar to Favre saying he doesnt care about the money the vikings just offered him to return next year

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?

if that REALLY was the case, why did he file a grievance against the Giants for bonus money that he did not received while suspended????

by andiamo708 on Aug 4, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

You are right about that

but i’m sure the Player and Agent have to be involved no? Plus if he really had such an epiphany why didn’t he turn around and give it back to the team? I’m sure if he was adamant about not taking money that wasn’t owed to him the players Union wouldn’t have taken up the case for him.

by andiamo708 on Aug 4, 2010 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

and they settled it for him

they owed him 1 million for the time he played from his signing bonus if he earned it pay him if its in the contract and he did what he had to do to earn it then there is no reason for the giants to try and go back on what deal was agreed to on the contract
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4046141

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

you know something....

You are 100% correct….I still don’t agree w/ the fact that he didn’t want to take out “pity” money. IMO he just washed his hands of the Giants.

But you are right….according to that article, Plax wasn’t interested in recouping the lost wages from being suspended…..he just wanted the 1 million sign on bonus.

Yes, IMO i think it should probably be pro rated considering he didn’t finish the year, but that is not the rule.

But wasn’t there another issues….. when the Giants wanted to re work his contract? And it wasn’t just Plax not wanting to take our money….it had to do w/ lost wages from when he was suspended…..I’m not making that up am i?

by andiamo708 on Aug 4, 2010 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions

the interesting part of that article

is that the giants had something in THEIR contract w/ Plax that would have allowed them to recoup the bonus money ….. (if of course there was a legal issue).

But the CBA wouldn’t honor that….so they had to pay him.

Interesting….and I bet that’s another issue the league has to deal with next off season!

by andiamo708 on Aug 4, 2010 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe your talking...

about the same season when he got suspended for what I remember being the Seahawks game if I’m not mistaken I remember that was the game Hixon had a big game. He had got suspended because he alledgedly had to take his kids to school some lame excuse I believe in that instance he was suspended and lost a weeks pay and fought to get that back and they came to an agreement that he got the fine reduced from a full weeks pay to half the paycheck something like that

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 11:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Also based on my understanding, the contract was full of non-guaranteed money as well.

Plax has no spot on this team.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 4, 2010 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Really???

cause hagan and sinorice should be starters on any team in the NFL… come on we can help upgrade our already good WR spot with a guy who can help mentor our other younger wr’s while he helps us on the field

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

they aren't gonna play much

don’t see how they matter.

You bring Plax back, he’s gonna want to play and start. That means Nicks, HAM and Barden are on the bench.

I don’t want that. I, along with many others, don’t want Plax back.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 4, 2010 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

He has no leverage in this

at this point he will take whatever chance he is given…you sign him and make him our 4th WR and let him work with Barden who obviously isnt ready to be a NFL WR… use him in red zone situations with Barden and throw lobs all day for tds and let Steve Smith run the slot routes

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

how do you know Barden isn't ready?

what if he is? You bring back Plax, then he’s less ready

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 4, 2010 4:28 PM EDT up reply actions

even if he has no leverage

I still don’t think he would settle for being the 4th WR. He would probably want to go somewhere that he could be higher on the depth chart and contribute to the team more

by #56 4life on Aug 4, 2010 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe

He wont get much a chance anywhere else either bring him on board with a 1 year contract give him the T.O. treatment and put some incentives in there for him let him play good soldier for a year and that will open up more chances for him in the summer of 2011 to find another team

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 5, 2010 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

That may work

but the Eagles signed Vick after he got out of jail and there are plenty of teams that need a decent receiver and would use Plax a lot more than we would

by #56 4life on Aug 5, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

He ain't gonna bench all 3

And quite honestly I’d take a healthy over all 1 out of 3 of them on every play

Look guys

I have to believe Plax hasnt learned his lesson… he was put in for the ultimate punishment on a minor offense. His wife had a baby while he was in jail, he lost everything he had going for him and he needs to come back and earn an NFL job. He would get back in shape pretty quickly and he never had all the issues off the field of a Michael Vick either. He would probably sign a cheap deal nobody is gonna pay much for a guy in his 30’s who just spent time in jail to a contract like he had before this whole situation happened. If we can get him in he already knows our offense the system hasnt changed since he went into jail and he could be a great red zone threat for us.

by bdasilva7785 on Aug 4, 2010 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

and the Giants have learned their lesson

Eli Manning, our Quarterback, had his best season without Plaxico. That is NOT a coincidence.

Let em throw to Nicks, Smith, Barden, Beckum, Manningham, Boss, Bradshaw and maybe Jacobs and Brown.

Plaxico has no spot on this team, cuz Eli would target him exclusively and ruin the chemistry he’s building with the young WR.

Plax served his purpose. The Giants should learn their lesson and leave Plax to do his own thing

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 4, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Jerry Reese is a great GM thats why he gave the answer he did.

He didn’t totally close the door on bringing Plax back but IMO there is little chance he will ever put on a Giants uniform again. If there are injuries, if the price is minimum, and if there are behavior clauses before he returns, but I doubt it’ll ever come to that.

by blains2000 on Aug 4, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

how could you not want this guy back

he was dominant when last we saw him. He has already worked with Eli, Gilbride and most of the rest of the Offense. He put us in the Superbowl and caught the winning catch on a flat tire.

High and mighty “he went to jail, he’s not of the character that the Giants want” statements would fade quickly when the wins started falling into his hands in the back corner.

I’d love to see him back in blue

by Flynner on Aug 4, 2010 5:49 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry don't agree...

this is not about “character issues”, this is about whether Plaxico can make the current Giants Roster better and I really don’t believe he can…why would we even entertain the idea of him taking playing time away from any of our young receivers?

I’m really trying to see the point of people who want him back but I am struggling badly…Eli clearly has a great rapport with the young guys why even risk upsetting that as that is the present and future of our team and worked pretty bloody damn well last year!

by Jonah19 on Aug 5, 2010 5:36 AM EDT up reply actions

I'd

rather see him running fades in the endzone for the next couple of years than Barden or Manningham.

Are current wideouts are good and could develop to be great. But to pass on the opportunity to get this guy back would be stupid. People will point to his age, but he hasn’t taken much wear and tear over the past two years. They say our WR are good enough, this guy was elite, never forget what he did in the NFC Championship game in the frozen tundra, and a guy like Barden could learn alot from Plax.

And as for making the roster better… I think we might be a better squad if we lost Moss, and gained Burress. I’m not sayin he would step in as the number one right away, but make no mistake This guy is the real deal, and he would make any team in the NFL better.

by Flynner on Aug 5, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Moss...

I think we’d be a better roster if we just lost Moss full stop! Replacing him with a tackling dummy would probably upgrade the receiving corps!

by Jonah19 on Aug 5, 2010 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions

As nice as it would be to see Plax back in blue

it just would hurt more than help. I am looking forward to seeing our young WR’s develop and bringing Plax in would most likely stunt the growth of at least one or two or our young receivers. Hope he has a good career elsewhere, he has made his history as a Giant but unfortunately that is exactly what he is now, history

by #56 4life on Aug 4, 2010 11:57 PM EDT reply actions

If Plax came back and he was still ballin out then hell yea

If he didn’t shoot his leg we would have won back to back IMO. We had the best team up until that point and played and beat all 4 teams that made the conference title games.

But Plax isnt going to be all world after serving two years. I would take him over Moss any day of the week, Believe that!

I like Plax but nope.

We’ve got a good thing going. Don’t want to mess it up and set back the stars of the future.
Bringing in Plax would be like bringing in Kurt Warner, or bringing back Strahan at this point. We’re just all set at the position.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 5, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

I mean if it did come down to it

Which it won’t, because the G-Men wouldn’t pick up Plax, but if it did…you’d take Hagan over Plax? Or Moss?

I guess I could see a case being made for Hagan, as he’s proven to be quite useful on ST, and from what we’ve read on here, doing quite well as a wideout as well.

But Moss? No way you keep him over Plax.

The problem with that

is it takes one of Smith, HAM, Barden or Nicks, and makes them Moss or Hagan, as in not in the lineup.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 5, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly

And listen, Strahan is my all-time favorite Giant, but like Plax, he doesn’t belong on the team: Out of the game for an extended period, getting old, and lots of young developing talent at the position that would be held back.

yup

Plax is my boy, and I really don’t give a crap about his jail time at all (its really a stupid law that the punishment doesn’t fit the crime).

But the Giants have moved on, and for the better. Eli’s had his best season for a reason, and its cuz he doesn’t have Plax bitching in the huddle.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 5, 2010 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Best season

Eli had his best season in 2007 when he won the Super Bowl…..with Plaxico!!

The only reason he had a statistically better season with these receivers is because the run game was non-existent. He had to throw the ball.

by DonDarko on Aug 5, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

the running game was non existent in the playoffs as well

Eli would be a lot better with a healthy Steve Smith, and 2 guys that can make plays like Plax (and plays that he can’t as well) with HAM and Nicks.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 5, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Plax would definitely make the team better!!!

I am shocked that people are acting like we have a receiver on the roster that commands double teams like Plax did. How would that team not be better with P lax, Smith and Nicks? The run game would flourish because you couldn’t put 8 in the box. And you could never cover all 3 of them at the same time. After he gets in football shape, he would be an excellent addition.

by DonDarko on Aug 5, 2010 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Yes Sign Plax He will make the team better

I posted this on the other Plax post too:

Giants organization should sit down with Plax and have a talk with him. Present should be the owners, JR, TC, E.Manning, KG and lawyers from both sides. He should be signed (maybe for just this coming one year, 2010 season), but with the stipulation that he will not be a nuisance like he was coming late etc. He was good on the field and he drew double teams. He knows our system and he will be a good asset to the team and a mentor to our other WRs
