NFL Roster Cuts: Derrick Ward Cut By Tampa Bay
Former New York Giants running back Derrick Ward has been cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We talked about whether he would be a good fit for the Giants the other day.

No brainer
With Ahmad usually getting hurt with too many touches and Jacobs making the offense too predictable when he’s in I think this guy is our Chester Taylor.
If we can get him cheap then I think it’s the move we make ….even if it means cutting a WR. If not Beckum…probably too late on that one.

Question is
What does he have left? Is he the same guy we had two years ago, or is he a fat, slow, unmotivated rich guy who has gotten paid now and doesn’t care anymore?

all good questions
and to your point I believe you made first. This guy has to come cheap.

Ed...Question for you?
Do you go to Saratoga at all?
I went there when I was up at Training Camp and I ate at some hole in the wall called Hattie’s.
Let me tell you…..it was some of the best food I’ve ever experienced….EVER
Go there….like now. I’m not gonna lie, you’ll have to wait like an hour…and they don’t have AC but it’s worth every penny.

Saratoga
I actually used to work at a company based in Saratoga, but I’m not a horse racing guy. It’s a beautiful village, though, with great restaurants.

I attended (and played football)
at SUNY Albany, and I’ve been to Hattie’s…you’re right. It’s really good.
really good?
that’s the understatement of the decade….LOL. At times I find myself day dreaming at work about the Fried Chicken and the Ribs….I can taste it….
"If I'm curt, then I apologize" - Newman
You're right
I’ve only been there a couple times…didn’t have much dough in school. and Usually I was up there just killing time until the club called “the grill” opened. But I don’t think I ever ate the chicken or ribs. I used to order some catfish things that were appetizers.
I know that place...
my friend used to live on Quail street….used to go over there a once or twice a year. when did you graduate?
"If I'm curt, then I apologize" - Newman
I used to go there all the time..outstanding food..
Me and my buddies always planned a Golf and day at the track outing..The deal was that whoever won would pay for dinner at Hatties..Even if none of us did we’d go anyway..not big bettors mostly just the fact that the place is beautiful and historic..The track that is not Hatties..lol..but the food is awesome..If you ever wind up in Poughkeepsie and would like to try the best Chili on the planet..the place is Andy and Steves..right down by the river..Geez your making me hungry..You know what I truly miss?..A damn good NY hardroll..I complained when I first came down here..I asked why the rolls were so damn soft..The guy told me that people thought they were ‘stale’..duh !!…Damn the luck..

Answer was no before
and no now. Don’t see the point of getting Ward.
The Giants have 4 RB’s…count em..4 RB’s that all got hurt last year and were either not in the lineup or 1/2 their full strength at best.
No room. Doesn’t even matter if he’s got stuff left, I don’t think he’s a better RB then Andre Brown.
Commence slow clap...
Now.

Well
for arguments sake let’s say he’s not better than Jacobs and Bradshaw.
I know he’s better than DJ and I know he’s better than a guy coming back from achillees surgery. That would put him at #3 on the depth chart.
Please get Phil Simms in the Hall of Fame
*was
he was better.
the guy got cut from a team that doesn’t exactly have earth and wind on their team.

Question.
How do you know he’s better than Brown?
Brown showed flashes this preaseason. Ward showed enough to get cut by a struggling franchise…just curious as to what makes you so confident an out of shape Derrick Ward would automatically be handed the #3 spot he left behind only a year ago.

All this
he’s out of shape…blah blah blah…
Are we really going to take as a legitimate claim and not just an excuse they couldn’t get a back that ran for over a 1k yards to work in their offense?
They didn’t want to pay him.
…and I know he’s better than Brown as an RB coming off achilles surgery is not 100%. Last time I checked Brown hasn’t run for a 100 yards much less than a 1000 in a season.
Ward is a proven back in this offense. With Jacobs and both Bradshaw missing games each year they have been with the Giants it just seems to make sense to bring in someone that knows the offense….if we can GET him CHEAP.
It’s fine if we go forward with who we have

From Costanzas comment below:
Brown ATT.21 YRDS 95 YRDS/ATT 4.5 Long21 WARD ATT21 YRDS50 YRDS/ATT 2.4 Long12
I’m not saying Ward wasn’t great in our system, because he was. But nothing I’ve read and/or seen from this off-season has given me any indication that one will be head and shoulders more effective than the other, so how you could “know he’s better than Brown” (especially after looking at their pre-season statistics…even moreso considering the state of the Giants offensive line) is beyond me. It may very well be a complete farce that he is out of shape, but what he’s shown this preseason, on the field, certainly doesn’t help his case.
I think I could be swayed into giving him another chance, if the price was right, but I don’t think that necessarily means he would be handed the 3rd spot on the depth chart.

well said
Lets go with the cards we been delt. But I will still have my fingers crossed that certain players will back-up their talk with their play. cough Jacobs cough

I think Jacobs has ran well this preseason
Let’s remember that 1st game against the Jets he had a nice run that was called back for holding, and even this last game he had a good run negated by an illegal formation penalty. And even still he was a monster for the time he was in there. I’d even say he’s run significantly better than ahmad so far this preseason. Most of his success has come off of screens and save me passes from Eli. No one has talked about his short yardage failure last week, which I still contend is Jacobs role.

I would love it
if Jacobs racked up some yards on some screens. Absolutely love to see the big man trucking down the sideline like a locomotive. You can see the pee stains form on the CB’s and Safeties. There have been some good points made about why Jacobs is no good at short yardage. Too big for a push through a small hole, just can’t get leverage with his size, needs to build some momentum…etc. I think with the right play called he can be effective on third and short, but really if Bradshaw is picking up third and shorts then who cares… as long as we are sustaining drives.
I’m not sure, but hve we seen much of Bradshaw with Hedgecock bocking for him?
It seems like when AB is in there it’s usually alone… not sure how accurate that is though.
Go Big Blue!
I still don't think people take into consideration the play of the Olilne when evaluation Jacobs' play
I constantly see our backs getting hit in the backfield…sometimes by multiple defenders.
It’s getting to the point where after ever running to play to Ahmad Bradshaw you hear the pharse “He earned every yard on that play”…and it’s because our backs have to be able to dodge defenders just to get back to the line of scrimage. Bradshaw is clearly better in that department where Jacobs is not….
In regards to those short yardage situations…it’s the same deal. How many times do you see Jacobs just run into a wall of his own Olinemen? AB can bounce those outside or cut it back. Jacobs needs to go north and south.
Heck on Giants.com a week or 2 ago AB gave an interview where he was basically calling out all those guys up front. Saying, hey….let’s get it together already.

AGREED
RBs in the NFL are a dime a dozen. Their success is based wholly on the offensive line. Ward success in NY and failure in Tampa is proof.

DO IT!!!
Absolutely.
Let him work his way into shape and maybe he is back to form later in the season when we need him.
This is a no-brainer
I second that.
Its easy to say that a player is out of shape to avoid paying him the money that you promised. That business. Its not fair but it is what it is. Ward played with a much better organization in the NY. One tryout won’t hurt.

I think we are all underestimating how good this back is. He has looked great this preseason and should only improve as the season moves along. We have already been down the derrick ward road before. Let’s move foward with some young blood.

+10000000000
the life expectancy for an NFL running back is very short. Out with the old. In with the new. Andre has shown some flashes.

I would usually agree...
but there’s already too many ‘projects’ on this roster. I would love to have him compliment this offense again. But you have to question an older back who lets himself go physically, i.e no fire left.
I really felt that Ward was sorely missed by the Giants last year. He accounted for 25% of their entire offense in 2008, and did so many things well. He really gave them a lot of versatility that they missed in ’09.
That said, I don’t think they made the wrong decision letting him walk considering the money he wanted, and I absolutely don’t think he’s a fit anymore by any stretch. As soon as I hear that a player is out of shape… no thanks.
I think his production would have been better replaced...
Had Andre Brown been at all active, or Ahmad Bradshaw had at least one healthy foot, or Jacobs if didn’t play with a torn meniscus, or…well, you get the idea.

offense was not the problem in '09
I don’t think we missed a beat without him. If either Jacobs, Bradshaw or Hedgecock were healthy in ’09 our running game would not have looked as bad. The defense is the real cause of the ’09 collapse
by Sarasota Giants on Aug 31, 2010 3:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The running game was certainly lacking.
Although I do agree with you in that most of it can be attributed to injury.

How did we get behind in the first place?
Both the offense and defense contributed to that problem last year. Why is the offense getting a pass?

by LoNJDTechnology on Aug 31, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions
the only way he was missed last year was if he was healthy
that was the problem with the top Giants RB’s. Said it above but its worth repeating..their top FOUR RB’s were banged up last year.
They expected all 4 to contribute, from Jacobs to Ware. But torn MCL, 2 ready to break feet, torn Achilles and a dislocated elbow (hard to hold onto the ball with that…) took all 4 down.
Who’s to say Ward wouldn’t have caught the injury bug here too? I think he caught it anyway in Tampa.
They didn’t exactly replace his production, but its not like they didn’t have the players in place to do so.
by FreeBradshaw on Aug 31, 2010 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Man
His sucess came from our o-line being great over here. This is a good example of how a player is good in one system and sucks in another. He would have still been in the league had he stayed here especially with the injury problems Jacobs has had.He went to Tampa for a better deal and I can’t blame him for it but he wasn’t able to get it done over there. The grass isn’t always greener man on the other side. Now he doesn’t a job and we are pretty much set at RB.
so i guess the next obvious question is
Does he get picked up by anotha team this year? Ill go on the record first and say yes.

No Ward
RB in the NFL is for young guys who are hungry.
That is not Ward…now.

I don't know..him and BJ made quite a tandem..wouldn't hurt to work him out and check his head..
Yeah he took the money..and may very well realize he was playing for a loser team…

Lets get serious though
Oh yeah by the way i’m the new guy around here but been reading the site everyday now since the season ended. But about Ward, lets get real, Jacobs and/or Bradshaw ARE going to miss SOME time. I’m not wishing it on them…..but i’m just being honest. They are not going to play 16 games this season just from being beat up along the way. SAYING THAT….hell yeah sign this guy………its ONLY been 1 season that he has been gone, he’s a proven back in our system, and………..ITS ONLY BEEN 1 SEASON he has been gone…lol, i really don’t see the dilemma here. 3rd string, get him some reps, cut DJ case closed. Wasssssup Premo welcome aboard.
I have a question…what about Andre Brown?
Many considered him the steal of the draft before he got injured last year. He’s looked healthy and promising this pre-season…
Do you think giving snaps that could potentially have been Browns to Ward would be detrimental to his development? With the statistics favoring Brown this pre-season, and the reports from Tampa’s camp painting Ward in a negative light, I would think it more important to give Brown room to grow, rather than crowd the backfiled.
