NFL Roster Cuts: Giants Place Moss, Sorgi, Tracy on IR

The Giants this morning reached the 75-player limit. They placed wide receiver Sinorice Moss, quarterback Jim Sorgi and linebacker Adrian Tracy on Injurred Reserve, moving offensive lineman Kevin Boothe to reserve PUP, meaning he must miss the first six games, and releasing wide receiver Nyan Boateng.

Tracy and Moss to IR is a bit of a surprise, as their injuries were more severe than originally thought.

Tracy underwent surgery Monday to replace ligament damage sustained Saturday when he dislocated his elbow Saturday in Baltimore. Moss underwent surgery this morning, having a sports hernia repaired.

Giants giving Tracy a year to develope?

Tracy

Ligament damage knocks him out for the year. Just the dislocation is only a few weeks, but the ligament damage is the severe injury.

Moss

How does this guy hang around every year when he has absolutely no production what so ever? Isn’t he a free agent after this year anyways?

by Sarasota Giants on Aug 31, 2010 11:50 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I don't get it

I too thought this was his last year anyways. Why keep him on IR? I fail to see the benefit for the team when he is gone next year anyways. Why not just waive/injured him like they do with any UDFA that sprains their ankle?

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Why not keep him on IR?

This way the Giants don’t have to pay him an injury settlement, and if they decide they don’t want to bring him to camp next season they can just let him go in the spring.

Doesn’t he get paid anyways on the ir?

I think

they’re holding out that somenoe will give them a late round pick for him. I’d be really surprised.

Sorgi – nothing against the guy but I’d rather have Bomar because I don’t believe he’ll be any worse than Sorgi in the game in Eli is hurt. At least we can build some stock in the guy and possibly setup a trade in a year or two.

Please get Phil Simms in the Hall of Fame

Wouldn't an injury settlement be less

or do I not understand how this works. I wasn’t under the impression that placing someone on IR got you out of paying them. I thought it cleared the roster spot and the hit from the cap so that you could replace the player with a new body, but you still had to pay them their salary.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

I think

IR they’d only have to pay him this year’s salary. Settlement they’d have to pay him a large portion of his remaining salary. But don’t quote me, cuz I’m not sure

I think you are right

Player takes less, but is free from organization, unrestricted free agent next year

by ct17 on Aug 31, 2010 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I just checked

and the team still has to pay him his full salary and he has no contract with the team beyond this year. This seems like a questionable move any way I look at it. Angle one is that the organization is being overly nice and paying the guy a full years salary for absolutely no reason. Angle 2 is that the team is willing to pay him a whole years salary just to handcuff him from being able to sign on with another team. That could only be for two reasons. To be spiteful or from fear that he’d pass on info. Either way it comes off dripping sleezy to me. If it is just to be spiteful that is crap. If it is out of fear that he’d pass on info that is cowardly. Other teams can learn as much about you watching film as they can from grilling a former player likely. Sure teams are still going to try to get info from all angles, but if you don’t think you can handle that you don’t belong coaching or running an organization in the NFL. Another strike for Reese in my book.

I think

This is all pure speculation and hogwash, therefore “another strike” against Reese is unwarranted.

i think they might keep him on to keep him employed so he has bene’s to cover his surgery and the organization doesn’t have the legal bs hoops to jump through to take care of Sinorice.

Tyree

This is what the Giants did with Tyree when he had the bad hammy or groin (one of those) the year after the Super Bowl. It was a class move instead of just cutting him they IR’d him.

by bgn1987 on Aug 31, 2010 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Tyree's contract wasn't up

I believe it was a blown knee, and I don’t think his contract was up. He was in camp the next year trying to make the team, but couldn’t get back to form. The Giants had reason to IR Tyree because he is one of the greatest ST players to play the game. They wanted the chance that if he could get back healthy he’d be in a Giants uniform, he just never got back to for after the injury. It’s a different story with Moss because he is done in NY after this year, he’s just on a one year contract.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't realize he had more on his contract

That’s right, it was a bum knee that year. I still think they did him a solid by putting him on IR instead of releasing him. I wish things did work out better for him.

The Moss move is much different and puzzling. The Giants don’t owe this guy anything….he’s basically been stealing money since they got him.

by bgn1987 on Aug 31, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

err.. actually

Just checked and had they waived injured him by the rules they would have been obligated to pay him and cover the medical costs through him being healed, so we are right back to that not being a reason to IR him. The difference between IR and waived injured is that if waived injured he would be able to sign on with another team. I am right back to being very skeptical about this move.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Why?

Sports like any other business is about assets. If you pay x$ for something and have the option of giving it away or keeping it why wouldn’t you keep it?

In other words if you are not saving by waiving the player why not retain your rights? It costs you nothing more that letting them go would.

by blains2000 on Aug 31, 2010 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Forgive me if I consider people slightly more than assets

Call me old fashioned or naive take your pick. IR = paying a full season for the right to prevent a man from moving on with his life in this situation it seems. Waived injured = just paying the man until he is healed up and letting him move on with his life, which to me seems like the classy thing to do. The Giants have traditionally been thought of as a very classy organization that did the right thing. Old man Mara for example was a pivotal piece in establishing revenue sharing even though such a system would result in a significant amount of money flowing out from his organization to others. Some might argue that wasn’t the best cutthroat business move, but Mara knew it was what was best for the game.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Spare me the Giants history lesson

If I am not mistaken NFL contracts are not guaranteed, right? Wouldn’t the “classy” thing be to make them guaranteed?

Look, neither of us have any idea on why these moves were made. Maybe they WERE made in the best interests of the player. Maybe the players wanted to stay here. Maybe they are in the best interests of the Giants too. I think they have the right to do that. I see nothing wrong with that.

I don’t think there is enough information to say this is a another strike against Reese.

ummm...

contracts can contain guarunteed money and often do….

There is enough information to say this move seems very odd. I’m sorry if you don’t like that or me questioning the almighty Reese. Moss isn’t staying here unless they write up a new contract because he is currently on a one year deal. I’ve yet to hear a valid rationale provided for why you would lock up a player for a year when you no longer have his rights at the end of that year except for those reasons that fall on the sleezier end of the spectrum. If I am so off base to question the move please simply provide me with a potential valid reason to make such a move. I was already ready to eat my words above when Flynner provided what I at first thought was a valid reason until I looked into it and found it didn’t add up.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

So Sinorice Moss...

Has been robbing us blind ever since we wasted a 2nd round pick (which we traded up to get) on him in 2006 with his nagging quad injuries, his lackluster special teams performances, and his inability to contribute anything other than a few TDs caught from backup QBs in garbage time.

Now you not only want to give him some free money, but would also allow him to divulge 4 years worth of knowledge onto any team willing to pay, because it’s the “classy move”.

Riiiiiiiiiight…we’ve given Sinorice Moss more chances to earn his spot, contribute, or evem just prove he’s an NFL player than any other franchise would be willing to, you can take that to the bank.

I’m on board with whatever the organanization decides to do with Mr. Moss.

by tito (eight and oh) on Aug 31, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not sure how he stole from us...

He didn’t work out here, that is clear. I too have questioned several times why he was still on the roster, BUT the Giants drafted him, gave him a contract, and chose to keep him around. They could have released him at any point.

He is getting “free money” either way since you have to pay him if he is on IR. I’m really not all that worried about a player divulging information. Teams will try to get info every way possible, but a good team can get as much info from watching film as grilling a former player. Also, are you telling me that you are planning on coaches so stuck in their ways that they won’t be constantly changing their gameplan to adapt as the season moves on. Insider tid bits quickly are out of date.

The fact that Moss never turned out to be a good fit for the Giants does not mean he is not still a human being.

by bigblue777 on Aug 31, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Free Money

If you are a part of the team, but are on “IR” you are still part of the team.

If you are released and still getting paid, you are getting free money.

Since I have never been part of an NFL organization I won’t pretend to know how much information a veteran player would be able to share with an opposing team that could potentially be detrimental. I will go out on a limb and assume you have the same NFL experience I do, so perhaps you shouldn’t lay claim to that knowledge either.

Just remember:

I too have questioned several times why he was still on the roster, BUT the Giants drafted him, gave him a contract, and chose to keep him around. They could have released him at any point.

It seems they wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, and give him chances to become the success they thought he would. Now that he hasn’t, it’s clear better business will be taking the place of the gentle, and kind-hearted style of front office Sinorice has been recieveing.

More than fair in my eyes, and quite honestly, it’s about time.

If not this seems… cheap. I get that the Giants are doing their best for these guys, but we essentially just made Sorgi, Moss, and Tracy untouchable if my understanding is right.

My knowledge of IR is shaky. What exactly does it impose? I know it means a player can’t play for the season and they still get paid, but can they still be picked up by another team? Is there a limit to how many players a team can have on IR?

And why is Sorgi on IR?

Is this a one year deal, cannot recall? Avoiding injury settlement? They really want to keep him around? I would imagine there will be better people available in the future so why keep him?

by UnknownJintsFan on Aug 31, 2010 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

He's on IR

Because the Giants like him. They signed him for a reason, they think he can be a solid backup. You can never tell who might be available, and if you already have a guy you don’t want to just turn him loose for no reason.

HURRICANE EARL!!!

Slight chance Hurricane Earl (cat 4 as of now) will be hovering over Giants Stadium on Thursday. What a bummer. Once the Jets leave town another windbag moves right in to fill Ryan’s place.

Oakland – 5 months

I'm not entirely sure that Bomar won't be

but I’m waiting to see who gets cut in the next week or so.

Rumors are swirling that Kellen Clemens could even be an option.

I’d also take a look at one of those guys in Minn (but I doubt they go anywhere)…..even Leftwich.

I say hell no to that but Kellen Clemons might not be a bad option. At least he has some starter experience as a starter.

by costanza! on Aug 31, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I see a common trend with all of these guys...

Clemons, Leftwich, Simms, Garcia, Jackson or Rosenhoweverthehellyouspellhisname…and that is:

None of them will take this team to the promise land.

If Eli goes down, it’s time to pick an AFC team to root for.

better options out there

The free agents that will be out there will be better than Bomar or Sorgi. I think that is why they put Sorgi on IR. Even if he heals in a few weeks, if Manning goes down, they are going to want to sign someone better.

We could try his chunky ass out at LB since Sintim is a complete bust. Just kidding Free.

But seriously, if he isnt in bad shape i would take him. He can block, catch, and he returned kickoffs for us in the past. Maybe the extra beef-E-ness will help in short yardage.

I can't see him getting motivated enough for the role though.

The reasons he left had a lot more to do with playing time than money…why would he be motivated to get into playing shape for the fourth spot on the RB depth chart?

Surely you would have Brown ahead of him?

"Thirty-nine seconds left...Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York."

He went to the highest bidder

So I think money had SOMETHING to do with his decision. And since he got cut by the Bucs, I cant imagine alot of teams scrambling for his services. He might have to take what he can get, or battle Maurice Clarrett for a roster spot in the UFL.
