Ravens 24, Giants 10: At Least It's Still Preseason
Not a ton of good news coming out of Saturday night's 24-10 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens for our New York Giants.
The Giants lost the game, apparently played badly on offense, couldn't stop Joe Flacco and the Baltimore passing attack and lost rookie linebacker Adrian Tracy to a dislocated elbow.
I did not see the game, and have not yet watched it on my DVR. I was in New Jersey last night to watch the New York Red Bulls, so the 'Kudos & Wet Willies' will run Monday morning.

True or False Question
In order for the Giants to compete and make the playoffs this season, Reese and Giants management are going to have to make a deal using their depth at WR or DE and address the linebacker/CB situation….
I am curious what others would say. Based on what have seen, I think we are in real trouble defensively if we don’t make some type of move sooner rather than later.
Trades
just don’t happen in the nfl, especially ones of any significance, as this time of the year. We should all know that, and not be looking for it. It isn’t going to happen. The Giants will bring in a couple of guys who get cut by other teams, that’s all.

DE's can be plugged in
I think if Reese shopped Kiwinuka he would have offers on the table tomorrow for veteran backers that would improve this team immediately. Even so, a situation like the Dumervil situation may yet arise again, i just hope Reese is ready.
I like Kiwi, but Osi is not tradeable as damaged goods. Any linebacker that would be of starting quality would improve our team immediately versus a good DE who is only playing in rotation.
I've been hoping for that, but as Ed says
it’s a little late. We have to do something with our surpluses, so might see trades for draft choices, but that doesn’t help for this year. It’s a little soon to get too worried about the D what with the new coach and all the guys who on paper look like they should be able to play better than they’ve shown.
False
need to get healthy, and get physical again, two corners didn’t play. They better find their identity, are they now going to be a finesse team or ode to Olivia Newton John, let’s get physical.

False...
The Giants don’t take the preseason as seriously as many teams do, they’ve had a lot of interchanging parts during their workouts as injuries have been (and may continue to be a recurring theme), and defensively they have a new coordinator who appears to have tried a vast number of configurations to see what would happen. I’m guessing that the defense will look a lot better when the team gameplans against its opponent, and Fewell consolidates things down to the plays he actually thinks will be successful and knows who he has for personel. Eli is also “rusty” and hasn’t gotten in a lot of game time at this point, and has missed some practice time as well. It’s WAY, WAY, WAY too early to panic here. The preseaon is to get work in, hopefully avoid injury, see new players in game situations and to prepare for the regular season. I won’t say the Giants have been awe inspiring in the pre-season, they haven’t been, but I’m not fearful of the the start of the regular season either. And if you look at, we’ve “found” Cruiz, who is certainly a bit of a surprise, and also found that Bomar might actually be a backup quarterback among other things. Keep the faith!
Agreed
Can we also trade for a trainer that can get players on the field? In all honesty I’m having a hard time saying how bad or possibly how good this team will be because we never have had the starting defense or offense on the field at the same time.
Am I off on this one?

Your on
i don’t know how much of it is on the trainers, or how much is on the players personal conditioning routines, or if they just have broken down bodies.
i will be interested 9/12 to see just how many of these nagging injuries and precautionary sits turn out to be more than they let on.
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
Take a look at the All Blacks or the Springboks
… they are NZ and South Africa’s rugby teams respectively. Most players play a full 80 minutes during the game, no real breaks except for half time. Very limited chest padding is allowed, no headgear (usually), played at an astonishing pace (very fast). Admittedly they are not allowed to tackle the player unless he has the ball, but apart from disallowing head high tackles there are no other rules governing the tackle, it is very physical, a full collision/contact sport .. brutal. BUT the players don’t have one tenth of the injuries that NFL players seem to get. I think it is about conditioning .. not the stuff they do in the weights room, but running up and down hills, etc. The attrition rate at this stage is very frustrating. While I don’t set too much store by the pre-season games they are a good opportunity to work out some combinations and this is a chance being wasted.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
I don't see much rugby...
but I highly doubt that there’s 350lb’rs who run 5.0 40’s in rugby.
I know most are really stocky sorts, like 5"8 but 220+ lbs..and some are around 6"6 and over 200, but there aren’t many Justin Tuck’s in rugby are there?
The pads or lack there of really don’t seem to carry much of an injury risk. you don’t pull a hamstring or tear an ACL cuz you don’t have the right padding.
Also…sometimes the pads in football..the helmet specifically, cause or cause you to make more injuries then in rugby. Don’t lead with your head in rugby much do you? Or at least less inclined to throw you naked head (pause) out there with no helmet?
There’s just bigger athletes in football. I dunno what the average athlete in rugby test out as..but is there many Patrick Willis’ in rugby? Brandon Jacobs?
I just think the reason there’s less injuries in rugby is cuz the collisions, player interactions and overall athletes are completely different.
The only thing comparable of the sports is that they’re violent.

Most professional rugby players are 210-220lb
… although some of the fowards will be heavier. Few players will be any lighter. You do make a good point about all the projection may contribute to the injuries, although Eli would probably have been in much worse shape if he didn’t have body armour as Pace hit him pretty solidly in the back when he cut his head. When tackling around the legs in rugby you are meant to have your head behind the runners legs not in front, or you get kneed in the head … no, it is not a good idea to lead with your head! Most tackles these days seem to be head-on stand-up type tackles.
No may to resolve the ‘which sport is tougher’ debate, but thought you might like to see some of these hits.

You are right about them both being violent.

good stuff
but yea I can get something as to what the game is like vs. the NFL.
I don’t think either sport is “tougher”, for both you gotta be a tough SOB to play it. I just think the athletes in the NFL are bigger and faster. And the equipment is basically a weapon…a shoulder in the abdomen vs. a shoulder + a shoulder pad, bit more force.
As for Eli, I think he more so got cut cuz of his helmet was flopping around…something that those crazy bastards don’t even use in rugby!

NFL players
fly around like bloody scud missiles. It’s amazing that anyone gets off the pitch with their back still in one piece (not that one’s back is actually a single piece, but you know what I mean).
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
I played rugby
even semi pro out here in the Southwest after playing football in college.
I’m not going to get into that much but the collisions in football are much worse BECAUSE you have pads and a helmet. Don’t get me wrong – I toured Europe as well as played many team from overseas in the Vegas and Houston tournaments and those Kiwi’s can pack a punch.
…but it never compared to the hits I experienced in college or even that of high school.
Rugby players play hurt all the time and you don’t hear about it because they play or they are off the teams. Clubs don’t have the cash to carry a hurt player. I had to have surgery on my knee after one Rugby tournament and after that I was off the team. Nobody had to say it. In rugby …you play or your off the team so NOBODY complains unless they can’t play or basically run.

It's Pre-season
it doesn’t mean sh*t. I put very little in the preseason. I’ve seen 0-4 teams start the real season great and I’ve seen 4-0 teams start slow.
"I don't do many endorsements. I'd rather get doused by Gatorade than bust my butt selling it." - Bill Parcells
If they IR Tracy
while I would’ve loved to see him get a shot at playing time this year, its not a horrible thing cuz they at least don’t have to practice squad him and risk losing him. Silver lining I guess.
The D disappoints,
but it’s hard to get worried remembering the two opening losses in ‘07. Patience right through the first few regular season games is called for. On the other hand, I didn’t think Fewell was going to go all read and react. Are we going back to a pre-Spags type D for good or is he keeping things under wraps?
The O line remains a concern. Will Beatty be able to hold down OLT? Will the injured guys be ready opening day? Eli looks rusty. That’s okay. He’ll be ready opening day. He can’t be much good if the O line doesn’t get better.
Is V right about lack of effort? It seems so, given that Tuck backs him up. We saw it last year as well. What can be done about it? Shake things up by giving more time to young guys who’ve shown enthusiastic effort or as Ed said bring in rejects from opther squads?
I wish I had solid answers to the questions, but I don’t, except as a fan to exercise patience and see how things play out.
The lack of effort is the most disheartening thing about all this.
Spags and 07
I don’t understand the continual comparisons to what happened in 07… Does everyone think the personnel we have are comparable?
Kavika Mitchell and Gibril Wilson were both fantastic blitzers from the back – who do we have like that?
Pierce was still a stud – his play on the screen pass against Green Bay still saved that game in my opinion.
I like Tuck, but do not compare him to Strahan – besides being a better player, Strahan provided leadership to that team that this team clearly lacks.
Osi was at his peak, not on the downslide.
Nah – the two situations are not comparable. Don’t count on that miracle happening again, Fewells magic wand is not alot bigger than Sheridans at this point.
Bingo
People keep referring to “well the D didn’t do well during the first couple games when Spags
got here” blah blah, that was then and this is now…That season is well in the rear view mirror, and has no bearing on what is going to happen with this coordinator and this defense. The disturbing thing is the coach is not “happy with the energy”….For a team that has a lot to prove, even though the final score is meaningless, you would hope that they understand that they failed their “dress rehearsal” and even the coach doesn’t think they will be ready by week one..

All I can say, is wait and see.
Where did you get the idea thatsome BBVers pointing to the ‘07 experience think the jints can turn things around and suddenly have the best D line and one of the top Ds in the league? Personally, I’m hoping they can morph into something a whole lot better than they’ve showed.
The only point in comparing the two years is to say don’t rush to judgement. It takes time for a new sytem to gell. LY, it never did. they went from okayish to dwonright terrible. Spags’s unit went from terrible to great. Is it too much too hope that F’s can morph from terrible to good? If so, it would be an indictment of management, given all the attention they’ve paid to bolstering the D.
Where?
From some of the posts that I have been reading on BBV, that’s where I got it from, lol!

You may be right, but I can't recall post that went that far. There easily could be
a few that did. At any right, I know I never did and your post above seemedbe triggered by mine. Moreover, the situations are comparable, maybe not, as you say, in terms of personnel. Stray, although not the player he was at his peak still demanded double teaming and his leadership qualities are sorely missed. He wouldn’t allow his team mates give less than their all. We have no one to fill that role now.

Okay, I'm out of here for a few days, at least.
Moving back to upstate NY, then looking for a palce in FL. Glad I don’t have to continue dialogue (have to pack.)
I agree last night was bad
but i hope i have enough life jackets for all of those who are jumping ship already. let’s break it down:
- Kavika Mitchell’s play was always overrated for this team. yes, he did provide timely big plays, but he was a one and done player on this team. our D was good before, and after him. Gibril is my man, but i’d argue that both guys slated to start back there this year are as talented, if not more, than G-Dub.
- Pierce was a stud. yet and still Pierces best year was comparable to Bullock’s avg. year. Remember, this man had 108 solo tackles in 14 games last year.
- Tuck is not Strahan, but if we keep using no Strahan as an excuse, then we will not be good this year. Stray has been retired for 3 years now, and is fat off of Subways and money. let’s move past him and realize we have 2(yes 2) ALL PRO ENDS, who are still in there primes. Last i checked, 27 and 28 is the prime age for most stars.
Heres the biggest thing i take from last night. we were starting Corey Webster, and a bunch of no names that won’t be in there during crunchtime(Bruce Johnson excluded – i actually like him). we went from 1(C. Webb) to 4(B, Johnson). that’s a big leap. theres no way either TT or AR wouldn’t have been on Boldin during that little post near the goal line. if one of them had been playing last night and got beat, then i’d be a little more worried.
there’s work to be done. that i’ll agree with you on. but let’s not jump ship with 16 games to go.
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
Agree with you
with everything.
The excuse that Tuck is no strahan is annoying.

Was only able to watch bits and pieces of the game but...
From what I did see, we are is trouble. The whole Offense was atrocious. Eli is showing me that maybe he should be a backup QB but of course, blame it on the line.
Face it, BJs time with the Giants is over. It seems that now, all you need to do to bring him down is sneeze on him.
The Offensive play calling was shitty than a dirty diaper. If I see that quick pass the the WR before he leaves the line of scrimmage one more time, I will write one letter a day beggeging the Giants to get rid of KG ASAP!
The achilles heel of the Defense has finally been figured out: Qiuck passes to oversized Receivers.
The thing that scared me the most last night was the look on TC’s face at the end of the game. Thiy guy does not have a clue regarding how to adjust the team that circumstance has given him. We are in trouble.

As bad as our guys looked...
Dallas looked far worse..they got their butts kicked on both sides of ball…
At least our guy had some er, a few positives…BJ rumbling off a 29 yard run (yea!!)…The rest of them sucked..Our man Cruz got a TD and had another reasonable game..Tackling was decent..Can’t say much about our secondary, but they were getting bombarded and the front two tiers on our defense were absolutely not ready to deal with the no huddle, and I guess I wouldn’t have expected them to be ready given it was the Ravens..but you can bet they’ll be addressing that in the next two weeks..Not too much to smile about, but nothing to get too worried about either..and yes that is a huge bummer concerning Tracy..geez

it was preseason, I was happy we got a penalty
Rolle and the other DB’s need to be very aware of the new play calling on hitting a defenseless WR. A penalty is the best way to reinforce the message, and it was preseason. No more of that guys, you have to change the style before you give Payton a free TD. I liked this game, and I didn’t think we would turn it around fast, I just need to see progress in the right direction, and I don’t know about you guys, but I saw some. We probably can’t beat teams like Carolina, but we will have a much better chance against Indianapolis. And we are more likely to be playing Indianapolis at the end of the season than Carolina. This league is a salary cap league, and that is why it is so great. You can’t be good at everything, you have to chose. Steve Smith was the first All-Pro wide receiver for the Giants since Homer Jones, and it could happen this year that he is our third highest scorer. (or course he could very easily lead the league in third down catches, which should be the primary measure of a reciever)
Every team is forced to have flaws. I am not overly supportive of the fact that our choice is to be weak on special teams. Defense, I think we gell. Offense, everyone will be wondering why they didn’t take Eli as their fantasy QB. Returns and coverage. They will always start at their 35 and we will be happy to start at our 20. I think that will be about 15 yards difference around 8 times per game. I don’t think we survive that.
by Spider Lockhart on Aug 29, 2010 10:21 AM EDT reply actions
I applauded Rolle for that hit
and hope he continues to do it, penalties or not. you’ve gotta send a message during the game, and that message is, you’re not catching anything over here, and if you do, you’re going to pay. that play was perfectly clean, and i want to continue to see it from him and KP.
As for these refs, and the system they’ve been asked to enforce, well let me say this. i’d like one of them to go out and play safety, and have someone ask them to break up a pass similar to the one AR had to break up. then i’d like to see if they, in a split second, can A) process whether its a catchable ball or not B)decide whether or not the receiver is going to catch it or it’s going to deflect off his fingertips C) be able to do that and then at the last milli second pull up just in time not to touch anyone. If they are able to do that successfully, 10 consecutive times, then they can keep this penalty in. But they won’t be able to do that. the only thing that exercise will teach them, is it’s not as easy as it seems for that safety and his decisions.
This league is becoming more and more of a candy cane league man. it’s sad….
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
If we want good football, the NFL players have to stay healthy
Whether we like it or not, the rules have changed. The NFL needs to keep people from attacking the head area in all cases. The DB doesn’t need to pull up, he needs to tackle and or make a play on the ball, not hit the head area with his helmet and shoulder pads. We have to stop applauding those types of hits on the highlight films. It’s not a candy ass league, its a league where the objective needs to be clearly to stop the play, not to injure the player. If you are the safety, you need to be in the right position when the play is being made, not try to recover by trying to injure a player. Violence shouldn’t be a substitute for skill. A good clean hit at the shoulders or below is fine. Breaking up the pass is fine. Making a play by going after a player’s head because you were out of position is not fine. The receiver suffered a concussion on the play. We actually don’t want that anymore. I don’t anyway.

seriously how does the NFL play expect a Dback who’s running full speed to stop on the dime. It was a bang bang play. Should a dback stop because the WR tried making a one handed grab.

ST’s is putrid and we haven’t covered a TE since the 70’s. Preseason or not, I would have liked to read better reviews this AM. Games on at 1 for me I plan on watching the 1st half. Hey London how did the face look? Was it the “I can’t believe they called that penalty face?” Or the “man my punter just punted it 15 yds face” or the “Eli didn’t see the linebacker face?”

Covering TE's shouldn't be a problem by the regular season
Heap had his success when he was covered by Antrel Rolle, a converted cornerback. Once they start using Boley, KP, and Grant where they’re best, covering the TE, that should get solved.
Of course, ST’s sucked, and will continue to suck. I have no hope about that. Dodge had this beautiful 70 yard punt (did some bouncing, and stallworth bobbled it), but the gunners completely blew it. Gah.
haven't covered a TE since the 70's

I don't know what positives anyone got out of this game.
The offense failed to score three touchdowns in three games. Does anyone really think that we will be successful with such a shortcoming? Eli still has not developed in to this take charge; get the job done QB that we truly need. The running game is stillborn. Brandon gives us one 29 yard run and that is a positive? Je-sus!!! WR receivers are drgging our CBs for miles. Our WR corp has been boasted as being one of the best in the league but they show thier meiocricity in EVERY game. Face it, this is not our year. Realistically speaking, Eli has to go. We need a scrambling QB who can stand in the pocket and throw the ball accurately without being rattled. Eli is not the guy for the job.

I don't know about other people
I look at 29 yard runs as positives. In a game designed to progress a football down a field that measures 100 yards from goal line to goal line, a run that progresses that ball more than a quarter of that length in one play seems to be something to be happy about. But I also believe a QB that throws for over 4,000 yards and 27 TD’s in games that actually make it into the record books is a good thing, which surprisingly is not a unanimous idea. I also believe that a QB that wins a SB and shows his take- charge ability by leading a game winning TD drive with less than 4 minutes to go in the 4th quarter is something a professional American football team needs, so I’m prepared for others to accuse me of radical thinking.

you are looking to solve the problem the hard way…the long way.
Instead of getting the next Randall Cunningham and Barry Sanders to play QB and RB we should just go the easy route and fix the Oline…or get guys healthy. Blitzers are coming absolutely untouched and guys are getting pushed off their blocks….the problem is stemming from an Oline that is not getting the job done on a consistent basis.

That said, the problem is even bigger then QB & OL. The coaching staff is under performing as well. There are too many injuries, to many blown calls. Even with Fewell at the helm, I am still seeing the Defense get undercut with passes when they play the zone. They are conceding too much yardage. KG? you already know. ‘cause I feel like I’m talking to a wall. You don’t like numbers, because they don’t fit in with your neat little mindset. Fine, I won’t let little things like records and numbers clutter up the discussion. Actions speak louder than words, and we have a QB that has committed the greatest action a QB in this league can. When you are the only guy on an offense who knows when an audible is coming, something is wrong. Especially when you have been a starting QB four over 5 years.
The OL is OLD even with the return of O’Hara the OL will not be compentent enough to protect any QB.
Our DBs look like midgets compared to the WRs that they are covering.
4000 yards and 27 TDs are in the and are not helping this team at all right now.
KG’s play calling has not changed since he has been here. The opposing teams know our plays better than we do. I am tired of the 3 and outs.
Any team looking to beat us in the regular season need only watch a tape of this game. This season will be very much like last year. I see it coming.

You really are the most existential person I've ever met on this site.
The past and future have no meaning, it is only the here and now and the last impression you have gotten that influence your thought processes.

I want to see results.
The past is no longer here and is therefore irrelevant. The present determines what the future will be. The present performance level of most of our starters is terrible. I see the disaster of what will be the 2010 season ahead. Not because I am trying to be negative but because I still see the same problems that contributed to our failures last year.
Am I talking to Giants fans here? You can’t sit there and tell me that you have confidence in the possibility that the Giants will be contenders this season based on what you saw last night. The Eagles will probably win the division and the Giants will battle the Cowboys for second in the Division.
Eli…whats the point? Manningham has pissed me off. I haven’t seen this guy catch a ball that matters since last year. Barden’s big ass is always hurt. Still waiting for Nicks to break out. Brandon…sigh.

oh...you're talking to Giants fans....
based on you’re logic/preseason…the Giants, Cowpokes and Eggs will all be in the top 5 of the draft while the Redskins run away with the division at 8-8.
Results? How about results when results actually result in a result? Its preseason bub.
Nothing matters. None of this matters. I really can’t wait till they go to the 18 game schedule.

starters...
I’m anxious to see a real game as well. People smash our starters due to shaky preseason play but they have a history of starting games slow and hammering people in the second half. Hard to stop Tuck and the boys for 4 qtrs…
"Osi said he's going to London to see the Eiffel Tower."
As a Giants fan...
I will never count this team out by the 3rd preseason game. Their performance last night was frustrating to watch.
Using your logic…we should count out the Patriots this year because the Rams beat them, right? I’m pretty sure the Browns beat Green Bay this preseason…so, again with your logic, we can scratch them from this season.
So, yes…it is hard for a Giants fan to see them breakdown like that but I can’t write the season off right now.
"Osi said he's going to London to see the Eiffel Tower."
If I sound over the top, its because I hate to see the same sub standard play from a team the at is capable of so much more.
Every year we talk about how this wasn’t in place this year and thats why we didn’t perform well or that wasn’t in place and that is why we didn’t perform well. When are we going to start holding these guys responsible for their sub standard play? When fans continue to look past the mediocre play and make excuses for these guys then we set the stage for another embarrassing season.
A game of Chess is like a sword fight....you must think first....before you move.

that's what I mean
I agree that some of us need to stop making excuses for substandard play, but getting rid of Eli? I am definitely not on board with that. but here’s the thing, check out some of the other team’s sites. Fans are just as frustrated with some of their players as we are, if not more. That being said, I’m tired of mediocre play and the we’ll fix it next week attitude.
Manningham has pissed me off. I haven’t seen this guy catch a ball that matters since last year
me either… but that may be because the Giants have not played a game “that matters” since Dec 2009. Also its kind of hard to judge Nicks sophomore season on 3 pre-season games (actually 2 he got booted from the second game 4 plays in).
But I do agree on Brandon, that man pisses me off and I was a big fan of his back when he actually physical football and being a TV/newspaper loud mouth

this team's been together a long time
I’m tired of working things out…let’s just get it right already
Positives
I will give a few:
1) Bradshaw looked good as usual.
2) Dodge looked better. I almost crapped when he kicked that ball out of the endzone and it landed on the other 30. I thought the ball got stuck in the rafters.
3) The Dline was able to generate pressure.
I agree with those positives
But each, IMO, was offset by ugliness:
1- Bradshaw was juking the crud out of the defense, but in the end, the blocking and holes just weren’t there. He just got swarmed.
2- That was the most beautiful punt I’ve ever seen from the Giants. The ST coverage by the gunners was exactly as expected, miserable. Stallworth got something like 10-15 yards on that return even though he bobbled it.
3- Not consistently enough and almost never from the middle, unlike the Ravens D who seemed to constantly be in Eli’s face.
Screw it, I give up on the preseason, wake me up in 2 weeks.
name 1 scrambling qb who won a SB
i can only think of 1 and thats Steve Young. Last time i checked there are no steve youngs out there. Eli’s fine, he was just rusty. The real problems are oline injuries and no middle coverage.
Well actually the lack of interest by players.....
is the Head Coach. There was a time when TC needed to lighten up. But this could actually be the time when we need the old TC to reemerge. I think the era of our Head coach being player-friendly on this team has ended. We may actually need the old TC back with this team. Different teams need different approaches. This team may need a higher level of disapproval from the coaches. Last year’s team sure did. Can a person un-zen themselves?

It's what I was referring to when I claimed management
deserves indictment for the team’s lack of effort. Damn, the people we have on D are not by and large of the kind of quality the ‘07 team were, but they don’t seem to be less than average, either, arguably better then what F had art his disposal LY in Buffalo.
instead of 07
2008 seems like its more comparable. Seems that many have forgotten that the 2008 Giants were pretty much the best team in the NFL the whole year…largely with the same personel that’s on the squad here and now.
That’s why we go and look at the past. Cuz the 2008 defense was incredible and the stars of that squad are those that are here now.
Tuck, Kiwi…those were our DE’s. Not Strahan and Osi. Kawika Mitchel was gone too. And as a whole that D was better. Didn’t get to the promised land..and really the D getting tired for lack of depth (hence the Canty and Bernard signings) was the reason why they failed, not so much the idiot shooting himself.

I will add the obvious… AP ran the show on the field. He may have been a bit slower than he had been but you could count on his ability to read and direct the LB’S and secondary. Beating a dead horse…lack of leadership is the element missing from the defensive side of the ball.
In 2008 we had young players that played as a unit. We don’t seem to have that…
"Osi said he's going to London to see the Eiffel Tower."
and it takes time to get that cohesiveness.
I’d be more scared if the team was playing well now!
Its a new system for all. That’s also something that’s overlooked. So yea..the 2007 stuff has merit cuz that was when they had a new system implemented again.
they played like crap (similar to this year ) in the preseason and for 2 1/2 games into the regular season.
I’ll be more worried about this team if by October they still look the same.

Even with poor preseason play
I’m not hearing any bickering or players calling each other out. As far as I’m concerned the locker room isn’t dealing with the drama like last year. I’ve only heard maturity and unity when it comes to positions played, who starts, and the team’s mission this year.

Guys. Its preseason. Its basically full-tilt PRACTICE. I was glad Eli got sacked on our own goalline last night, it gives Dodge an opportunity to PRACTICE punting out of the back of the endzone. Neither of these units were even close to operating at full capacity, as many of the Giants’ wounded are being kept for an actual game. Having O’Hara alone solves a multitude of problems.

Doom and Gloom
Guys, just a note about some of the negativity I’m reading today. It’s preseason, the season’s not a waste, life isn’t over, don’t jump off the bridge. No defense preps for the no-huddle in preseason,, so don’t worry about that stuff. We had one healthy cornerback last night in C-Web … don’t worry about the other guys … the o-line still has to get figured out … as does the return and coverage games … but, please, come down off whatever bridges some of you guys are standing on … nothing has happened yet that really means a thing.
agreed
we have barely had more than 70% of the starting lineup in at defense or offense this year. It doesn’t look like it will happen for the last pre-season game as well.
….but I do believe this will be a down year because the defense is learning a new system. I see us at 2-5 before the bye and 5 and 4 after the bye with a 7-9 record.
I do believe we need a reassessment of Gilbride. He appears to have a hard time adjusting when the defense has locked in on our plays and getting creative. I like how he started going with different plays against the Jets and it drove us down the field.
Please get Phil Simms in the Hall of Fame
Webster looked great last night, IMO

Look at the bright side
In my experience as a fan I have noticed when expectations were up the Giants’ performance suffered. On the other hand, when expectations were minimal the Giants outperformed those expectations. As the saying goes, “just saying.”
Something I just noticed....Corey Webster was playing some Safety last night
on the TD pass to Heap when he caught it against Rolle. C Web was the Safety on that play.
I really didn’t notice it last night, so I’m assuming it was just that one play…but I think thats interesting.
"If I'm curt, then I apologize" - Newman
just watched the 1st Half
Ab was good last night. CWeb was REALLY good. Rolle can’t cover Te’s. The Oline was terrible but that what happens when 2-3 backups play one of the best Def in the league. Smith/Nicks looked good. DT needs to pick it up but it looked like Flacco was under pressure a lot, he just made some plays. The rest of the DB’s were shyte. But again they are 2-3rd teamers playing against starters. All in all its not AS bad as I thought. We just need to get healthy. O and fire Killdrive….I just couldn’t help it.

Doom!
The ship is sinking, get off the boat! C’mon guys. I know we wanted to see better from week 3 of the preseason, but this is not the end of the world. We don’t need to make any knee-jerk reactions, we just need time to play.
No one wants to compare ‘07, fine. Do last year when we started great and finished poor. Or how bout 2 years ago’s Lions, that went 4-0 in preseason, but 0-16 in the regular season. Or to this very weekend where the Rams beat the Pats.
Just give it time folks. I promise you, we’ll be very pleased with our D when all is said and done. Mark my words, Tuck will have a banner year. And don’t think our O-line isn’t missing O’Hara.

but you do like to see the starters look good in the 1st half of game # 3. Not good.
Tuck and C-Web looked awesome.
Bradhsaw was great, and even BJ looked good to me.
Can you play with just 4 guys ?!?
Reminded me of the Boys effort Saturday night (could only see the Giants on the NFLN replay today) . Wouldn’t be surprised if both coaches make the starters play some next week (although Captain Cupcake would never do that).
Finally, what do they expect Rolle to do on that hit that they flagged ? That new rule interpretation is going to cost a team a very important game this year, and it’s going to be a damn shame. It’s football guys. Can’t flag ’em for just hitting hard. Do you have to verify he caught it and is looking at you before tackling the WR ?!?
I agree Shof..
Especially Rolles call on that hit..isn’t that what he supposed to do? Hit hard?..gime a break..I didn’t think Tuck (no tackles) or Bradshaw (no gains when they counted) really had that good a game..There were some decent plays on offense but nothing even close to consistency on any given drive..a good play or two here and there then punt..they had two shots to gain a 1/2 yard for a first down and blew it..Parcells would have been shitting twinkies…

True
No one knows what will happen tomorrow, much less on opening day then on through closing. It’s all a blank page. But when I hear people compare this team to 2007, to Spagnoula’s Ds first two reg season games… Please. If you don’t see major problems with this team based on current performance, then you’re simply playing a game of wishful thinking. Which is fine, it’s only a game. Might as well be wishful. But to those who think our shoddy play (yes, ‘our’, my fan credentials are second to none) if you think our awfulness is some sort of slight of hand — ha! Nobody is tricking anybody with purposeful incompetence. That’s a fantasy. But if you want to buy it, hey man, I’ve got plenty more collecting dust in my comic book collection. This team is deficient in all of the areas that were all too apparent 8 months ago, and the O-Line and running game WILL be worse. The D will rebound, as I’ve said over and over, but only to the point of being OK. The O — as I’ve redundantly pronounced — will be our achilles heel. Now, and I’m sure you’re all sad to hear this (cue sarcastic sighs) but I will not post here again until the season is over where I will either eat my jaunty hat or get into a, FINALLY, serious, rose colored glasses off, discussion about the Giants inadequacies and what they must do to rebuild and how long it will take. Have a good season folks.
Offense will NOT be the problem..
Although I have become much more pessimistic about our chances this year, our offense will not be the problem….. Once the season starts, we will have the same ole OL out there, and they have played long enough to know what they are doing. Our RB’s are healthier than last year and we have the best WR crop in my lifetime.
Our achilles is two specific areas:
1) The middle of the defense, the linebackers. All of them.
2) Our special teams have the potential to be a complete and utter disaster. Although some will say that specials have marginal impact, they would be full of it. When you give up 20yds of field position in nearly every phase, it can kill a team. Dodge, although he has a strong leg – has to lose those 30yd bullets that have been so common. We have nobody to return a punt or kick period and we have the same crappy position coach who must have blown Coughlin at some point.
I see the Dline getting push, and I like the play of the safeties thusfar, they have been hitting and setting the tone. Both areas will be improved. But our LB’s are not only bad, but horrible. The TE’s and backs out of the backfield are going to kill us. Honestly, I don’t see a solution without bringing in different personnel, nobody looks like they want to win a job at this point.
I'll believe this when I see it
I’m calling you back here the first two game losing streak. Which I believe will happen at some point, leading to all of the “I told you so’s” to come back out of the woodwork and claim vindication. But I still believe, that by the end of the loooong season, we will be a playoff team. See, I can recognize inadequacies and still feel optimistic :) As a side note, I’m betting you collected Thor or Silver Surfer. Guys who couldn’t appreciate what they had and just flew around spouting morose, gloomy introspectives.

So that being the 3rd preseason game and Eli looking bad…. I say we trade him for Matt Leinart or Rex Grossman, they are BY FAR upgrades to what we have. Actually never mind, I am jumping ship and cheering for the UFL and the Hartford Colonials, Andre’ Woodson was always a better QB then Eli anyway.

ok let me ask 1 question
for all the people saying the preseason means nothing…Are you happy with what you’ve seen so far, discouraged with what you’ve seen so far, or you haven’t watched a single game because they don’t matter? Because the people who keep saying the preseason doesn’t matter seem to be all over the place with their posts. One second it’s “we looked good with this and that” and the next it’s " nothing matters because it’s the preseason"
Not "happy" at all
Well…bits and pieces…overall I’m nervous because of the overall level of play so far. Yes, there is good and bad, but there are many more questions than answers so far. That is troubling. If last year was different then I could say that the preseason didn’t matter. In reality, last year DID happen. Last year happened and it was painful so I know that I have been hyper-vigilant during training camp. So, preseason MATTERS to me…it has also made me sick at times.
"Osi said he's going to London to see the Eiffel Tower."
kind of a mixed bag
you get a feel for a season, espically new players and a new D coordinator. Also wanna see injured players from the year before come back healthy and see if any of the undrafted rookies can make the team. I liked some things so far, but I hated a lot more too.
Then again a lot of teams this pre-season, mostly those with high hopes in 2010, look bad. Eg. the jet and cowboy offenses have done NOTHING and the colt defense looks like trash. I am almost 100% sure those three teams will have winning records. So with that u get no clear picture of what the team will do.
Giants have a lot to work on both sides of the ball, sayin healthy is #1. But the talk of Eli is the problem has me really confused. We’re not dealing with 2006 Eli, this is 2010 Eli and this is his team. I will be really worried if they play the panthers in week 1 like they did last year, not a way to open the stadium and the season. Until that, this team is 0-0 like the other 31.

neither here, nor there.
I see pluses. I see a pass rush. I see Bradshaw looking explosive. I see Jacobs and Tuck ditto. I see Webster looking like his All-Pro caliber 2008 form. I like what I see from Rolle.
The run D looks pretty good as well.
But the bad stuff..like the passing game? Anyone needs their head examined if they think Eli and the passing will be a problem.
THe pass D seems to be getting gashed, but this is a completely new monster to master here. The pass D is completely different, its a new defense. Also..may need thy head examined if you thought they’d be 100% a well oiled machine right now.
I see positives. I see negatives. I also know who’s who, what’s what and what time it is.

How's that an excuse?
the DC is new. This is nothing new for this decade of Giants team either..a new DC.

Ideally better right away
but realistically it takes players more than one offseason to adjust to new roles and new schemes. Some actual meaningful games will have to be played before players are comfortable enough to trust the scheme and start focusing on making plays instead of just being in the right position. Which btw, is why Goff was backpedaling so frantically last night as passes were being hit in front of him. It will take him some games to get the feel of when to break on the play instead of just getting the motions correct. Thankfully it’s a 16 game season, instead of 4, where we might be in real trouble.

Let's apply your logic to a situation we've all encountered
Let’s say some time next week you are driving in to work and you run into a logjam because of road construction. In the past, you have made it into work successfully on many occasions, but right now in the present you are stuck in traffic and not making any “progress” towards the “results” you want to achieve, i.e. getting to work. By your logic patterns, you are bound to be stuck in gridlock for the rest of the year, so you better go buy a new car. ‘Cause by God, no more excuses for why your car can’t get you to work!!! Except, to make it more realistic, it’s Saturday! So it doesn’t actually matter if you make it in to work or not!

this makes no sense
having a brand new car or having a 20 year old car doesn’t change a construction sight. in the nfl, you go with guys who have been successful. eli was hurt last year and had a good year, cut him a break
Ugh
This was in favor of Eli. Go back up and read the original post I was replying to. I guess the reply was lost in the distance from the original comment. Too sarcastic I guess?

Win a Super Bowl MVP or something?
That was in the past
doesn’t matter a whit when held up against two quarters of a preseason game.

No. Lon's been around a bit.
I think he just likes to rattle the cage … nothing wrong with that. I also don’t think I hear anyone giving the season away. There are always questions and frustrations … this is the Giants we are talking about.

So what's new?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
me, i am happy
I see Tuck back to normal, I see Bullock, Grant and Rolle playing, I see CC Brown gone, I see Bradshaw recovered from surgery, I see Dodge getting the nervousness and kinks out, I see Cruz adding another weapon, I see Tynes hitting field goals, I see the defense allowing plays to be made, but wrapping up when they make the hit, I see Kenny Philips back on the field, I see JP pulling down an RB in the backfield, I see Shawn Andrews out on the field, I hear of no WR with hamstring pulls, I see a real defensive coordinator on the sidelines, I see Bernard making a play, I see Joseph making a play, I have seen only a single big play against, I see a 3rd string QB ready to take the field. And I see a lot of rust and players being protected. At least a couple of those must be positives, non?

During the first half...
I predicted about every Giants offensive play. It was so obvious! I tried to do the same with the Ravens’ offense and I wasn’t nearly as successful. Kevin Killdrive needs to drink some liquor before he comes to the stadium, because he’s very obvious.
Other than that, Perry Fewell looks very nervous on the sidelines! LOL
Rhett Bomar needs to go back to the practice squad. LOL there was a play when he took 3 steps back than another 3 steps, lmao it was so hilarious.
Tom Coughlin should’ve let Eli stay out there for a bit longer, because he looked very inaccurate.
HAHA
that was a zinger (literally made me laugh out loud)

Starting with as little as $20 you could be very wealthy at the end of a half, and I mean very wealthy,
just predicting run pass!
20 plays in a row would get you up to about 1,000,000 to one odds.
none of the NFC east teams
Look good right now because it doesn’t matter except for grooming the roster. It makes it hard to play inspired football. My three main concerns right now. OL push/pass blk, porous secondary, and poor ST. Lingering things from last year.
by SJBBfan on Aug 29, 2010 9:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
sigh
again, if doesn’t matter, why play the games? you can get the same work in practice. In fact you get to do plays over until you get it right in practice.
you don't get real game action
against the other teams aside from preseason.
All it is, is something to get on film. Get your team on film vs. other NFL teams’ D and O. That’s it.
And also, this is why Goodell is planning on getting rid of it, cuz its useless. These players are ready already.
I think you’re forgetting that a player may be inclined to not give his all if he knows the game’s not gonna count.
For a team that’s been riddled by injuries…why are you gonna go all out if you’re trying not to get hurt..especially in a game that does in fact..mean nothing.
by FreeBradshaw on Aug 29, 2010 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions
so preseason is important
That’s what I’ve been saying because it’s the only way to get a legitimate look at how teams react to plays you’ve been working on…which by the way you said they don’t do.
A) Goodell is planning to get rid of two games because they can make more money making those games count…lots more money. That is the ONE and ONLY reason.
B) I’m sorry but players that don’t give their all shouldn’t be playing in the NFL whether its practice, preseason, regular season, a blowout, whatever!!!
C) When players don’t go all out, that’s the fastest way to get yourself hurt, just ask anyone who’s ever played football…you’ll get your head taken off. Also, Effort has not been the issue in my opinion, its been execution.
Goodell's also getting the 18 games
cuz fans hate the preseason cuz its not NFL football, its evaluation and trying stuff..not trying to win.
You can write that off all you want, but I’ve been saying it all preseason, cuz all this bitching about the Giants after meaningless preseason games is really..REALLY annoying.
by FreeBradshaw on Aug 30, 2010 6:17 AM EDT up reply actions
bcuz fans hate the preseason?
c’mon man, Goodell couldn’t care less. And as far as fans hating it, BBV had something like 500 posts during the giants game vs the ravens. and the starters only played the first half. I’d say people like it a little bit. matter of fact, there’s like 200 posts on this, a preseason post game article. People love football period. and If Goodell really cared about what people wanted, there’s a lot of rules he would not have changed. Like the rule that causes Rolle to get a penalty on what has always been known as a good football play. And as far as fans “Bitching”, I don’t think most are, especially not me. we’re just criticizing things we don’t like. But it seems like (and it might not be reality, just perception) that every time someone says the slightest thing negative about the giants, you make it seem like they hate their team. Someone says "I think coughlin should have done this or that’ and you respond with “oh boy, here come the fire coughlin talk” and a bunch of sarcastic remarks. but the thing is, obviously coughlin isn’t happy, or he wouldn’t be making it PUBLIC that he wants the team leaders to communicate with the rest of the players. Obviously he’s pissed off enough to let the whole world know that he’s clearly not getting through to some of the players, and is willing to take a different approach. And I agree with him. And that doesn’t mean I want him fired or the entire team cut or traded, I just want them to be better.
You get to see the rookies in game-type conditions...
you get to see how far along (or not) players are coming back from injuries, you get to experiment with different combinations and schemes. It’s not a waste of time at all, but it’s not an indication of things good or bad that will happen in the real season when it matters, teams are game-planned for, the first units stay out there for the whole game and a lot of the people we’ve seen over the first three games will be back pumping gas and bagging groceries.
are you saying
that rookies not being able to handle game-type conditions, players not showing much recovery from injuries, and proof that your combos and schemes don’t work have no indication on how your season will go? Really?
Hmmm....when I have something to say, I say it...
and I see your words in the comment above and not what I said. Keep in mind that a third of the players playing in these pre-season games won’t even be on the roster for the start of the season. I’ve spent most of my adult life in management/ownership positions and I can assure you that if I’ve got a simulation opportunity, or a “dry run” I’m going to experiment, try things that I’m interested in seeing how they’ll work, or how people will react in them and I’m trying to access who can and can’t do individual tasks. I think anyone coaching or managing would be attempting to do the same thing. You use the simulation that DOESN’T COUNT to experiment and try to learn what is most likely to work or fail for the experience that DOES count. If the goal was to win preseason games, I’d be worried about the Giants, as they haven’t looked good. But I don’t believe that’s their main goal in the preseason and I suspect they’re finding out things like defensive backs that line up in the neutral zone TWICE on the same drive and get beat in coverage aren’t ready for prime time, and thus, won’t be a problem in the regular season.
If you want to believe that the team has no talent and will be unsuccessful, that’s certainly your right. As for me, I remain cautiously optomistic, and while I don’t expect the Giants to dominate in the regular season, I think they’ll be better than last season and will make the playoffs.
When you practice
you go up against the same three or four guys on every snap and scrimmage. How would that prepare you for going up against 16-32 different players during the season?

Hello! Preseason sounds pretty damn important to me
and if it is important, then I want to see better play from my players.
fair enough...
but Ross, TT, McKenzie, O’hara, and Canty were out. We have to believe the latter 4 guys will be good to go by week 1.
At the same time, you have to take into consideration that the Defense is adjusting to a new DC. Clearly this takes some time right? I think it would be short sighted to just assume this is it…the final product. No, I’m not comparing it to ‘07. But to think that no improvements can be made? No, I don’t believe that.

It's more important to fringe players
trying to get game film that can impress the coaches. Nobody is saying we don’t want the Giants starters to come out of every game with a 21 point lead (although that may not be high enough to satisfy everyone). But the plain simple fact is there is not one single iota that shows a solid correlation between success in the preseason and success in games that actually matter. The last six SB winners have posted a combined…wait for it… 12-12 record in the preseason! Some had good years. Some had bad. The 2003-4 Patriots went 4-0 and won the SB. The 2004-5 Patriots went 1-3, losing 31-3 to Cincy and 31-0 to the Jags btw, and won the Super Bowl. As hard as it is to watch, there is just no good reason to get worked up until it actually happens well into the regular season.

I am looking for Fewell to shake things up come week 1
and I don’t mean player personnel. I think that more innovative fronts will appear….guys will start moving more along the line. I think right now our guys look stoic out there, and that goes against what I heard Fewell is all about. I think that he doesn’t wanna show too much right now, but hopefully we see something new come regular season

Wow .. just re-read this whole thread
guess we have vented enough spleens and let enough blood to last the whole season. Got a bit scary there for a while .. hope no-ones ego is feeling too bashed about. Someone else has already said it … if the G-Men play with the same passion as displayed by the poster on this Board then they will have another SB ring come next Feb.
