Derrick Ward, Anybody?
Anybody want Derrick Ward back?
From the sounds of things in Tampa Bay, Ward might be looking for work soon.
[Coach Raheem] Morris says veteran running back Derrick Ward is out of shape, and he says that if Ward is unhappy with his place on the depth chart, that's his problem.
"In '09 we weren't a very good football team. We weren't a very good organized football team as far as our running game. We all struggled," Morris said. "He was a guy that was a part of it. He went out there and he probably didn't get the holes that he wanted. Whatever the reasons were - nobody cares. It is your job to go out there and get it done. That is the same thing I'd tell Sabby. He feels bad about not being a starter. He feels bad because he feels like he was unjustly done, and nobody really cares."
Personally, I don't care what Ward did for the Giants in the past. The shelf life for running backs in the NFL is short. Ward is now 30, averaged just 3.6 yards per carry last season and is apparently not in shape. Even if he gets cut, I'd rather see the Giants stick with Andre Brown. Though I guess you could make an argument that Ward would be an improvement over D.J. Ware or Gartrell Johnson.

from what I remember
Ward wanted money…money the Giants already gave Jacobs…

I think his biggest motive was a starting job.
But sometimes it’s best to stay where you are.
I think this was one of those situations.

he had a good situation in tampa lined up and he cashed in on a good season
nothing wrong with what he did the giants didnt wanna pay him and he deserved money all of us woulda done the same thing
We have a saying back home that if your coming on, COME ON!!!!
I never said I frowned upon him seeking a pay check.
I’m saying I think he would be a better running back today had he not left.

but you're point is a good one...
he may in the long run had a better career and the most money over that long haul than a one time flash.

yes, you are right
he wanted a starting job and the money that goes with a 1000 yard rusher…
both well-deserved in my opinion…
and Milk72 is right, he had a good situation in Tampa until it all came crashing down on him…not really his fault, he just became a victim of their situation down there and I guess let it get to him…where he’s not able to focus and retain that success like he did with the Gmen, granted he doesn’t have the same OL there, etc.
I don’t blame him for trying to get his…and he did get his…$$$-wise at least, but he didn’t get the other end of it, continued success in running the football…

Absolutely
I hate to think he’s one of those “i got my money and now I’m done” guys – but when he played and succeeded for us, he was nothing but class.
He can catch, he can block and he can run. I would take him back.
Jacobs made Ward
It’s obvious that Ward’s success was largely due to Jacobs’ dominance that year. He was the definition of a complimentary back.
IMO…Jacobs will have a better year than last for the same reason, but Jacobs will be in the complimentary role to Bradshaw in 2010.
The Oline made Ward
and he probably owes them for his contract….
in ’08 the guy was waltzing through holes big enough for a 18 wheeler to get through….

Pfft....
we don’t need him. He had his chance. Wanted more $$$$. Doesn’t matter anyway, Bradshaw and Jacobs will eat up most the carries. He would probably not even average 4 carries and 1 catch per game.
Thats Incorrect....
The Giants could NOT have signed both Ward and Jacobs, and they were forced to Franchise Jacobs as he was a “cult” hero….
Ward did NOT leave “for the money”. He earned it by performing in all phases. To characterize him as another “greedy” player is
I guess you figured after the year Ward had, he should have signed for the league minimum and been happy just to have a chance to play with us.
At this stage, my perception would still be that its a 50/50 chance that Ward would contribute more to us over the cours of the remainder of their careers than Jacobs will…. The Jacobs era is coming to a close as he wears down and look more like Tyrone Wheatley every week.
+1
I’m really surprised at all the shots Ward is taking here. That was a three-headed monster unlike anything else in the league. You could put Jacobs or Bradshaw on the Bucs and you wouldn’t get the same level of production, either. The passing game is hardly a threat there, and their guys up front are very diff than ours.
What really surprises me is Raheem Morris’ comments. Not very professional, in my not-so-humble opinion. Even Mike Shannahan’s current feud with Albert Haynesworth seems more constructive. Perhaps that’s because I still really appreciate what Ward did here.
I agree
The guy doesn’t seem like a very good coach.
He didn't want to be a part of the best three headed attack in the league.
He wanted the opportunity to start in Tampa.
He got his wish.

And did not do anything with it
Look, I am not trying to bash Ward. I loved the guy when he was here. Don’t mind me if I am a little jaded over him leaving. We really could have used him last year. I agree that Jacobs may be on his last legs. You think I am hard on Ward, get my going on Spags.
sounds a lot like most middle management :)

This is a tough one.
If Ward is in fact out of shape, the question becomes whether he is willing to do what is necessary to get back in shape. Can’t blame him for taking the money. I would have probably did the same thing. I would expect Tampa to speak ill of him because thing aren’t working out but I don’t believe them. Ward can come back but if his performance is lacking passion then he will have to go. Brown didn’t impress me on kick returning but he won some points once he step in the backfield.

good call on the money situation
i notice how sometimes we degrade players for following the money, but i find that absurd to say the least. first of all, we’d all do the same. And we do do the same, in our particular fields of work. So if someone offered you more money to jump companies, and you did, who would call your loyalty into question? not me. but we somehow expect players to be loyal, to a team that 9 times out of 10 they didn’t grow up rooting for, and have no loyalty towards, except maybe because there the team that drafted them. that’s unfair on our part.
D. Ward followed the money, and the oppty to be the starter on day one, something that he knew would never happen here with Big Boy around, and a young upstart in the wings. he took a calculated risk, and unfortunately for wind, it didn’t work out. let’s not degrade the man for doing what he thought was right for his career, and family.
IMPEACH DOLAN!!!!
hmm, reunite Earth, Wind, and Fire?
Sounds like were talking Motown here. but seriously, let’s reunite them, then cut Ware and Gartrell, and keep AB2. AB2 can then be called water – because he flows through holes with no problem. So then we’ll have earth, wind, fire, and water….if we combine all the elements together we’ll then have the Avatar. the most powerful group of running backs ever. And they’ll restore balance to the universe of football.
or something like that.

Living in Tampa
I would take anything Morris or GM Domenick has to say about a high salaried veteran with a grain of salt. Both Clayton and Ward will be gone but not because they are washed up but because the Glazers have huge debts with Manchester United and don’t want to pay. That’s not to say that Ward has excelled, but on a team with no passing attack and a patchwork offensive line what could you expect. I think Ward still has something left but I would rather see Brown get those reps.
Rather go with Andre Brown
and much rather not have any tempt of him overtaking Bradshaw as the #2 RB.
Bradshaw Jacobs

There's the rub
Jakes health is no guarantee
Nope
but, he played thru pain last year and I don’t think Jacobs would do that. A broken ankle and you still go out and play this game?
Insanely committed to ball and the Giants.
Jacobs had a torn MCL since week 1
in addition to his usually injuries, so its not like he was 100%.
If anything, both RB’s are stupid as is the team for not making them get surgery sooner.

I think andre brown is solid
and putting Ward in the a gartrell johnson or ware spot, is useless. i appreciate what he did for us, but at this point there is not much he can give us. 30 is that magic number, im sure the redskins will come knocking.
Was just reading that the Rams ...
are looking for a back-up RB. I was kinda hoping they’d throw us something for Ware, but this may also be an option for them. At least Ware is younger / less mileage than Ward.
Jacobs the 2 back ?
I love how people are jumping off the Jacobs bandwagon … Jacobs has 2 1,000 yrd seasons under his belt and before last year averaged 5 ypc and now he’s Bradshaw’s backup ? Laughable at best.

They're both going to get plenty of carries.
But Bradshaw was by far the better back on two bad ankles last year, why would it be laughable that he get the feature role?
"Thirty-nine seconds left...Manning lobs it, Burress alone, touchdown New York."
by tito (eight and oh) on Aug 26, 2010 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Because he is more injury prone and generally small guys like him get less effective as their carries increase
On the other hand we can pound them with Jacobs and then let Bradshaw loose when the defense gets fatigued.

Tiki Barber was only 5'10 200 lbs
Bradshaw is 5’11 195.
He’s not that small.
Chris Johnson is listed at the same exact height and weight and he was without a doubt the best back in the league last year. I would not be surprised in the least if Bradshaw was the feature back by week 4.

completely different style of runner
its not even close.
Bradshaw is a power back who violently cuts on his feet. Barber’s longevity spoke for itself, the guy knew how to not get hit when he was tackled.
Jacobs is the key cog for the RB’s for the Giants as long as he’s here. He wears em down, the others finish em.

The short (hard to say small) guys seem to last longer--
Emmit, Sweetness, Barry, Tiki, etc.. Dickerson amazed me, a guy that big lasting so long and good to the end.
Don't forget
Eddie George or Jerome Bettis or OJ Anderson. All big backs that lasted a long time in this league.
True, but I don't put any of them in
Dickerson’s league. OJ came close his first years with St. Louis. Other good big ones—Matson, Motley, Gilchrist and above all Jim Brown (not particularly big by todays’ standards) Nevertheless, the shorter guys in general seen to last longer because their smaller targets and are more elusive.
you prove the point
A season is 16 games. 1,000 yards in a season is about 63 yards per game. So, if BJ is averaging 5 ypc he’s only carrying the ball on average 12 times per game or, if more, missing a number of games. In either situation, he’s not the feature back.
by Carson Lives! on Aug 26, 2010 10:52 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
There is no feature back
its a 2-3 (pending what Andre Brown does) back system but the point is that Jacobs should get the most carries.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Aug 27, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions
If he could be had cheap, I'd take Ward back as a fourth back.
Bradshaw and Jacobs are still going to lead the charge and if Brown can stay healthy and keep developing it shouldn’t effect him. But Ware is questionable due to both his current concussion problem and his lack of overall production, and Gartrell hasn’t proven anything either. At this point it looks like we could use a good insurance policy as a #4 back, and Ward (if he’s out of shape might be motivated by the switch to get back in it, though as someone else pointed out, Mr. Morris’s words aren’t Gospel to me), knows the system and the players and wouldn’t be starting from square one. I wouldn’t pay up for him, as he hasn’t recently been highly successful, but if cheap, he’d be a great insurance policy as the #4 back, and like other recent veteran signings, he’s a guy who could do a reprise with a lot of upside from that spot.
Im not really sure about Ward
If the team thinks he could be a better 3rd down back than anyone that we have now then it could be a deal. But personally I think Andre Brown has played really well so far in the preaseason and I’d rather have him get snaps over someone who is out of shape and was never that good in the first place.
by mclaren_is_the_best on Aug 26, 2010 6:51 PM EDT reply actions

Worth it to...
Bring him in for a look – How out of shape is he? Doesn’t hurt to work him out, but not worth a big investment
Ward took a beating last year
No Holes, never a shifty runner, big hits on almost every play
Pass
I’d rather give the carries to Brown, remember 4th RB on Giants is a STer, you think Ward would be happy in that role with those $.
But if he is in shape, and is hungry enuf to want a ST job, he was a good KR, and I’m sure would be fine on coverages too.
I am a firm believer
That RB’s are a dime a dozen and succesful based on good blocking (with very few exceptions to that rule). Ward was proof of that. He was only succesful behind our stellar O-Line play. Even Jacobs showed that when blocking fails, so do the RBs. Ward was merely the product of a good system. Put him behind the Bucs front 5 and look what happened to him. When he was here, I thought Ward was getting to many carries. So HELL NO!!!! I don’t want him back. Anyone who still thinks RBs aren’t easily replaceable, watch the Redskins carefully this year and see what Shanahan does to those 3 OLD, has beens.
Nah. No need for old guys at that position.
With two veterans and a very promising young guy as the third back, I’d rather stay young and motivated with the rest of the guys on the depth chart. You kind of need your 4th and 5th backs to be enthusiastic and hard charges on special teams.
Ward would almost certainly be dropped into the 4th spot on the depth chart, and I can’t see him being of much use to the team there.
Now, if you are going to tell me that Jacobs and Bradshaw are going to get hurt again this year….
If Ware has recovered
he will contribute greatly from games 6-16. Once he really starts to believe he can cut, take hits, etc in GAME situations and not practice or pre-season…..he will show up. He will be our 3rd down back in protection packages.
Brown over Ward
I think you’re wrong there Ed. Unproven quantity against a one that has shown they can produce is a no brainer for me.
Please get Phil Simms in the Hall of Fame
Ward was just a product...
Of the offensive line & Jacobs busting heads before he broke down/got scared.
Things are different now. No thanks. You’re being cut for a reason…especially if it’s by Tampa.
It is very rare for a player to give his all
If he does not like the ‘marriage’. He is fed up in Tampa, made a bad move and I think the Morris basically giving him the bad reference in the press is s*&tass.
I want to see more Gartrell then Ware
give Gartrell more snaps, let’s see what he can do…I like what I see with him in limited action than Ware (and his injury prone self)…
