New York Giants News & Notes: Halfway Through Preseason Notes

Good morning, Giants fans. I have to confess that I haven't been able to watch either preseason game in full due to a wonky DVR and a crazy work-travel schedule, so I'm just gonna give you some links and let Ed take care of breaking down the games. I promise that when the real season gets underway, I'll have more to say.

What gives with the crap party on Bomar?

No, he didn’t play well last night but he didn’t play terrible either. Why are some people looking for him to fail? He played well with the 1st stringers and terrible with the backups.

Bulluck looked solid during the time that he did play and Bernard and Tracy should get some props as well. It seems Smith is still Smith with that great catch that he made which prevented the interception. As much as I criticised him, Bradshaw impressed me (this game).

Honorable mentions:

Brown still needs work but did well once they put him in the backfield.

Sintim held it down.

Boss presence was definetly felt even though he didn’t get any passes thrown his way.

Rolle did his thing (as usual).

Eli and Jacobs played the sideline well.

Boley was everywhere.

Tuck was swarmin.

Osi kicked in the door wavin the 44 a few times.

Cruz showed that he wasn’t a one game wonder.

Despite the loss this team played well.

Didn't see the game Lo.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I’m very excited to hear about Bullock, ’Dre Brown, and Sintim more than most.

Seriously

We already had a post on this

How I am still not clear on the spelling on his name…

It's BULL, and UCK

It’s not that hard. The first time I spelled his name incorrectly was the day we got him, and I never did since.

agree with most although

Bernard got shoved around quite a bit. blame for some plays was wrongly assigned by Bob Papa to Joseph when it was Rocky gettin run.

Bomar

The guy gets his first shot at some real playing time and against the Steelers. I think he looked good and I hope he gets some more time this preseason and regular season if we’re up big in the fourth quarter.

Please get Phil Simms in the Hall of Fame

I agree 100% with you LoN...

I thought Bomar did well and agree entirely with your assessment..

i think CJ was just going by the boxscore on Bomar

Being that he didn’t see the game L-tizzle, so you should pardon him on that one. CJ is usually on point with his articles and analysis.

You’re right tho, Bomar played very well, better than his boxscore.

yup

saw the numbers, which weren’t great. Didn’t mean to imply he was terrible or anything, just that he probably isn’t ready to be a full-time starter – and luckily for us, we’ve got Eli to take care of those duties.

I agree with most of that except to me Sintim seems invisible. I would like to see more plays from him, although maybe that’s the nature of the position the plays are made on the weakside. He just worries me a little at this point. A little more push up the middle would be nice too, but all in all should be fine, I hope.

by weejer on Aug 22, 2010 10:50 AM EDT reply actions

I really focused on Sintim on the DVR replay ...

and “invisible” is a good way to describe it. Had to rewind more than a few plays to locate him in the pile of players away from the action.

He didn’t stand out in a negative sense, but I saw no big plays being made by # 52.

by Shofner85 on Aug 22, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Ill say this about Sintim

There were plays where he did get caught in the wash out there, but also plays where he was the man in the pile bringing the runner down. I too, thought he was invisible while I watched the game, but when I re-watched it on dvr, I saw that he was more prevalent than first thought.

The one play I was disappointed in him was when he blitzed off the weak side(I believe). That was a disaster of a blitz – no penetration, no timing, no speed to it, nor power when he got there. I expect him to be a beast on blitzes, that didn’t show me that.

All in all, a decent showing by Sintim. Had bad moments, also good ones. I’m positive that he’ll get better every game.

"big plays" no.

Invisible….probably more so no.

Numerous times watching that game I said aloud “I wonder when someone will invent that Sintim was invisible out there”, right after Clint was in on a play

Really..BS. Get off Sintim’s back, he’s gonna be just fine.

Nicks ejection

Had to be a carryover from a previous play or else Ike Taylor way overeacted to Nicks following through on a block. I didn’t see Nicks throw a punch, rather it was more self defense when Taylor just started flailing away. I would love to zero in on Hakeem in prior plays as he must have clocked Taylor oe else he just doesn’t take well to young receivers hitting him in preseason.

by malapraxis on Aug 22, 2010 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

Actually

That might have been the first play of the game. Huge overreaction from Taylor.

Rhett Bomar sucked.

Glad we already have a franchise qb, and a backup. Jared Lorenzen was a better 3rd stringer than him, I think we should sign him back. lol

I liked the way our defense played yesterday. We have 2 more games against 2 more great offenses, hopefully we continue to get better.

He looked decent against the Steelers starters

I think the Steelers D just have more depth at 2nd and 3rd string than the Giants O at this point in time.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

Bomar

Had his moments. He definately didn’t suck. He showed flashes of good and bad. what do you expect from a young back up QB. The plus is he makes good plays with his feet

by bigblueguru on Aug 22, 2010 3:12 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

He didn't suck..he showed toughness and promise..

Shit he had a week to suck down the gameplan like soup..He should have lined up behind Beatty and took snaps from him because he was getting his ass kicked for most of the night…Do you really want “Alley Oop” back?

"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"

by Bobbiblue on Aug 22, 2010 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Bomar didn't look like an elite quarterback...

But he didn’t look like he just got off the bus, or that he belonged on the practice squad either. He looked like an inexperienced backup NFL quarterback, which considering he WAS on the practice squad last year is a step forward and was as good as anyone should have expected. There’s worse established backups around. No cause for throwing him out or demanding that he get more playing time, just another step forward.

by Cranky50 on Aug 22, 2010 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

My initial reactions

where to start…I thought the first team offensive line did a better job. There are still problems when it comes picking up the blitz, and stunting Dlinemen and things like that…but I did see improvement. we just need more continuity.

Same goes for the Dline. I think Fewell is still trying to find his ideal front 4….heck, i’m still wondering what’s it’s going to look like. at times I saw a lot of guys getting blown off the ball; Cofield, Alford, Bernard, even Joseph last night. I also saw those same guys making plays….so, I think Fewell got his work cut out for him.

Secondary is still adjusting as well. It was hard last night b/c I don’t think we saw much from the starters, but you can tell Ross is about a step or two late right now, the safeties are doing a bit more “reading” than “reacting” (especially the 2nd and 3rd team), and Bruce Johnson got chewed out last night….on the field and off (by Cweb).

I did expected this to happen with a new D coordinator….so nothing glarring right now, we just need more continuity.

by andiamo708 on Aug 22, 2010 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

your d-line

only looked bad when the rookie Pouncey was at center for the Steelers. He is looking very good so far and will probably be the starting center before the end of the season if not by the end of training camp.

How do I break it to the cat that since he has been declawed, the rabbit he sees in our backyard would kick his sorry butt?

by Cold_Old_Steelers_Fan on Aug 22, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes I think your right about Pouncey..

The Steelers looked very solid last night..and your right they seem to have more experienced depth at certain positions.

Gotta agree that I was impressed with them.

The Steelers are a team that I will dread seeing in the regular season.

Bomar

Played fine considering where he is in terms of his NFL career.

but he did not have one of those performances that makes you feel comfortable carrying him as the only backup.

At times it just looked like he and the WRs were on 2 different pages….Manningham and Bomar were like Oil and Water out there.

by andiamo708 on Aug 22, 2010 1:01 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

Manningham and Bomar were having so much trouble connecting. I wasn’t sure if it was bad throws, or bad routs. Either way Manningham looked frustrated

by bigblueguru on Aug 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

MM and Bomar looked like the gulf coast?

Matt Dodge

Is starting to worry me….at least he got a really good one off last night.

I don’t know if he’s got stage fright or what, but I watched him kicked better punts in Training Camp…and I think he’s only got like 1 or 2 good ones off in a game?!

You all know I’m supporting the kid, but if this continues we must do something about it

by andiamo708 on Aug 22, 2010 1:09 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah he is stinking the joint up..and he knows it..

All he did was cuss himself all night..He must have ate ten mouth guards last night…

Bomar

would start if he played in Buffalo….

by nywins42 on Aug 22, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

speaking of that

I think if Bomar has another 2 outings in the next couple preseason games, eventually the Giants have a nice trade piece.

Hopefully the only time he plays a reg. season game its in mop up duty (for a win of course) but he can only increase his value.

At this point in Eli’s career, there’s probably never a chance Bomar is the Giants starter, but they can use him to get an extra draft pick or 2 if he keeps improving, which I think was their plan.

If he nets then more then a 5th round pick, Bomar served his purpose to the Giants.

by FreeBradshaw on Aug 22, 2010 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

we need to give him as much time as possible in the game to make sure he progresses into a solid backup or is trade bait to pick up a resource that we missed or due to injury.

Sorgi is Sorgi – we know what that guy can do by now.

He's probably already played well enough ...

that we can’t just stick him on the Practice Squad this year. Guess we’ll have to take a roster spot from some other position.

by Shofner85 on Aug 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah he doesn't look like a career back-up to me..

I think Bomar played good last considering he had to play the whole game. The fact he stood in there and got beat up a few times and still got back up is a great sign. Look nobody said he was going to be the next great thing but he showed he can handle the offense if something was to happen to eli. I think Osi showed why he should be starting he played great especially agaisnt the run

by g-men_fan on Aug 22, 2010 1:26 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Buffalo and a coupla other places as well.

And get better and turn into a pretty good pro QB (providing he didn’t get happy feet from taking too many hits, like Carr and so many others before him) I like him, despite all the good-natured kidding he’s taken from BBVers. He’s a tough kid, takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

by blue gonz on Aug 22, 2010 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

Bomar is the best 3rd QB in the league...

and may end up our backup if Sorgi’s shoulder is bad.

I too am mystified by what I consider to be harsh criticism of Bomar. NOBODY comes into the NFL and plays well at QB their first couple of years, including Eli and his brother. And that’s taking thousands of reps with the first team and playing every quarter of every game.

For a guy that just spent a year on the practice squad I thought he acquitted himself well playing the entire game.

Bomar needs more experiance

But he has more talent than SOrgi, and tougher too. Dixon is the best 3rd string in football though. He should be starting of leftwich (who still surprised me last night). Our first team D was impressive.

by Big Blue in tx on Aug 22, 2010 2:32 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

I think Dixon could start for a few teams at this point in time but he will not unseat Ben.

Bomar sucked

Not at all. Whomever makes these wild shots in PRESEASON, I mean really dude, understand how the game is played a bit more before chastising him.

by SNORKIS on Aug 22, 2010 5:07 PM EDT reply actions

Bomar

I don’t think he sucks………but, I came away unimpressed with him after this game. To me, it seems that he telegraphs his throws too much. He was staring receivers down before he threw it. I think that comes with not being comfortable in the offense yet, but he needs to fix that. He also forced a lot of throws and didn’t go through his progressions very well.

by nicksdafuture on Aug 23, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

I think we should give Bomar credit for what he did in a tough situation. He certainly held his own against the 1st string Steelers D and they only lost by 7. I, for one, thought the loss was going to be much worse once Eli was out.
