Giants 31, Jets 16: We've Got Victor Cruz!

EAST RUTHERFORD NJ - AUGUST 16: Antrel Rolle #26 of the New York Giants is brought down by Dustin Keller #81 of the New York Jets near the endzone after making an interception and returning the ball 59 yards during their game at New Meadowlands Stadium on August 16 2010 in East Rutherford New Jersey. (Photo by Andrew Burton/Getty Images)

Maybe Tom Coughlin was right the other day when the New York Giants coach said "Victor Cruz! What do we need anybody for, we've got Victor Cruz."

Cruz made TC look prophetic Monday night with an incredible six-catch, 145-yard, three-touchdown performance as the Giants stifled the New York Jets, 31-16.

I will be back in the morning with the 'Kudos & Wet Willies.' Gee, wonder which side of the ledger Cruz will be on?

yeah but you know what, it was a bittersweet win

sweet because we have bragging rights; but that means nothing. bitter, because there ones outplayed our ones. outside of Rolle’s pick, offensively and defensively they outplayed us. although what i did see from our D is that we weren’t giving up the big plays, like last year.

i’m curious to see who ed hands out kudos to, and wet willies to. i have my opinion, but i don’t want to shoot the gap on Ed.

To be honest...

Their CB’s never got tested. Jet’s blitzed the hell out of us and when you’re missing your 2 starting guards and starting tight end (who’s a damn good blocker/safety valve) you’re not gonna have time for your receivers to consistently get open.

Completely different question. Any of the new defensive fronts make an appearance? NASCAR? Big Base? I thought the Giants D played pretty vanilla on purpose this game.

by Matt V on Aug 17, 2010 8:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm with you, wilddre22

Our 1’s for this game looked really bad. We looked like the bad news bears out there. I don’t care about wins and losses in preseason, but I do care how our starters look. I was not impressed at all.

Our offense was bad. Bad protection. Bad pass catching. Mixing up play calls.

Our defense was taken for long drives and couldn’t get off the field on 3rd and long.

Our special teams stunk. Dodge’s punts were short with no hang time. We had trouble returning kickoffs to the 15 yard line, whereas they returned their first kickoff to the 33.

Overall, I need to see a lot better play before I start thinking we are going to be an above average team this year.

Sexy Rexy even mentioned him in his post game conference, saying that that’s what he said to Coughlin at the handshake. then he said, and i paraphrase “they better not cut him, or as a matter of fact, i hope they cut him. because i know one team that will scoop him up. and that’s us.”

Everyone worried about the Oline

can we please wait until we get our two Pro Bowlers back before making snap judgements? Is it too much to ask for us to wait until three of the four best players on our offense come back before declaring this a failure? Holy Cow, it was 10-10 with 15 of our starters playing against 20 of theirs! There was no stomping, there was one team jumping out early and the other team coming back to tie it. Gee, could we stop this rush to be the first to declare the season a false hope?

What's the point of coming on this blog

if we can’t evaluate what happened on the field? I agree that things could and should change when everyone comes back healthy. But you also have to remember that there is a chance that everyone won’t come back healthy. So I think it is fair to judge the unit we saw last night.

by ggggmen08 on Aug 17, 2010 7:39 AM EDT up reply actions

Fine

I will give you that if the team is missing 7 starters all season long, and playing teams that are only missing two, we will probably look bad and have a poor record. Until that actually happens, stop acting like this game was a precursor for the whole damn season.

We need more toilet paper, I'm taking my talents to South Beach.

by bigbluethruandthru on Aug 17, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

why so angry?

I never said it was how our season is going to play out. But there were definite concerns last night and the biggest bright spot was from a guy that is just fighting to make the team.

by ggggmen08 on Aug 17, 2010 11:22 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I really do get upset

when people rush to make snap judgements. I would also be concerned IF both our Pro Bowl linemen were playing and the running game still went nowhere. And IF our Pro Bowl receiver and starting TE were playing and we still didn’t have a hot route on all those blitzes. Until that happens, it would just be nice for people to have some perspective and not be in such a hurry to pile on the negativity.

We need more toilet paper, I'm taking my talents to South Beach.

by bigbluethruandthru on Aug 17, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

When we lose 8 of 11 down the stretch it is tough to get the negativity out of ones head. Solid play will do that, but I didn’t see that from last nights first string. I hope they turn it on next game and start looking like better, which will start to give fans more confidence.

When we have our whole first string on the field

and they don’t give us solid play, then I will be disappointed. Let’s just ease up on all the 2nd stringers playing against a damn good defense until it actually matters.

I am going to take some guesses

Kudo -

Cruz that was a no brainer (I declare Moss officially gone)
Rolle – That was a sweet INT and run
Wilkinson – 6 tackles and a forced fumble
JPP – the only Giants sack of the game
Hagan – some nice catches in traffic

Wet willie
Dodge – not for the blocked punt but because he couldn’t get a good one of fall night
While we are at it – special teams looked pretty bad. On kickoffs, the giants usually started at the 20-25 and the Jets were near the 30
Offensive line – Bradshaw and Jacobs had a combined one yard rushing and I put most of that on the trenches

Kwillie

Bradshaw would have gotten a wet willie for his running but that shuffle pass was awesom

by NYERinSF on Aug 17, 2010 12:39 AM EDT reply actions

To be fair to the o-line,

three of Brandon’s runs were goal-line when the whole world knew he was getting the ball. Same play Eli got hurt on trying to switch. The announcers noted that Sorgi and Bomar both threw td’s from the same set. I chalk that up to Gilbride’s vanilla play calling. Unfortunately, unlike the D, the offense will go through boring, predictable play-calling sequences all year.

by Matt V on Aug 17, 2010 8:42 AM EDT up reply actions

on the plus side of things

Beatty looked good at LT the entire first half.(I’m rewatching this on DVR right now and am at the half) I didn’t see him blow an assignment throughout against their number ones. I think there is hope for this guy yet.

Def. played a conservative pass defense for most of the half, and we really brought very few blitzes(anyone who went to camp will tell you this is not indicative of Fewell’s style so far) I think there was alot of zone assignment work being done and the LB’s as a whole I thought played a good half, especially Goff.

And lastly, the football gods may be on our side this season…. how the hell Eli isn’t dead is beyond me

by Flynner on Aug 17, 2010 1:41 AM EDT reply actions

+1 on Beatty and

with the Zone defense, he’s prob. keeping it vanilla but maybe also seeing what he can get from individual guy’s abilities if put in that situation…

Giants O line was bad

Good news………..JPP had a sack, giants only sack, Joseph and Dillard had 4 tackles each…….at least the rookies played good, but Cruz played great………he should make the team……….Go Giants!!!!!

by Jermal on Aug 17, 2010 1:42 AM EDT reply actions

didn't think the O-line was all that bad

There wasn’t a great push on most runs, but then again they blitz so often we were forced to go into some different plays and blocking schemes, quick hitters and misdirections, thought we looked good on screen plays, and good enough on passing downs… the Tackles especially (anybody catch Beatty flying down the field on that Bradshaw flip play)

As for the bloodied up Elii play, I looked at it a few times… and Eli was the only one who reacted as if it was a passing play. The left side of the line fired off into the endzone taking a couple of Jets with them, Jacobs was obviously thinking run and the wideouts both kinda jogged fades to take the corners with them. End result… we gotta get everybody on the same page

no way

Id love for him to work out. Im not just as high on him as I was in camp last year. JR and TC both say they expect picks in the top 3 rounds to help right away. This guy didnt even make the team. This year all I keep reading about are his drops in camp.

by ryanwk628 on Aug 17, 2010 10:05 AM EDT up reply actions

hadn't heard about the drops in camp.

as for last year, he came in with limited experience with a pro-style offense coming from Cal Poly. they planned on working him in sometime during the season. as it turned out, Smith, Nicks, Ham and co turned the receiving corps into a team strength so they didn’t have to rush another young guy. i don’t read that as a failure on Barden’s part.

Bomars got an arm on him. Cruz made Sorgi look decent .Kudo to Kareem McKenzie for singlehandedly moving the line into the end zone for Jacobs. Last thing we needed was to get stuffed on the goaline after Rolles pick.

Bomar is the pre-shellshocked version of David Carr.

Without that no-show job scandal in college, he’d probably be at least fighting for a starting job somewhere. Quick release with strong, accurate throws. Showed nice speed for a qb running up the seam of the blitz, too.

The OL deserves to be shown some time for judgement...

Chris Snee and Shaun O’hara are taken for granted sometimes…but they’re All-Pro caliber players for a reason. Speaking of All Pro caliber…Steve Smith. Does he drop that opening pass from Eli like Pharoahe did?

The D didnt look to great either, but its gonna take some time to gel. New DC, new DL coach as well. They didn’t look too bad against the run, and I think when they did look bad generally Rocky Bernard was in the game.

Vic Cruz looks very good. I hope he’s not just a one game wonder. If he’s really gonna make his mark, he’ll do it on punt returns. He was back there, but the ball was too close the the boundry to do anything.

They could’ve found another Hixon with Cruz, tho I think he’s much more explosive and seems a whole lot less frail then Hixon.

Agreed

I do think that special teams needs some serious work. This will be our downfall if not fixed.

My thoughts

I was on the Gang Green SB Nation page and it’s funny how after the Jets lost, that game was no longer important to them. Hmm.

Anyway, as crazy as this sounds, I thought our starters didn’t do too badly. Sure the Jets looks dominant as times with their pass rush and defense but we didn’t even have all our starters playing in this game. I’m sure they feel good about dominating our 1AA squad. But how do you explain us still hanging in the game before Eli was taken out?

Then on top of that, the Jets still kept there starters a bit longer against the Giants B squad and we were still in it. And finally, with their backups, our backups blew the game out of the water.

Sure at times we looked shaky, but I’m still hopeful it will come together.

Jets Fans

I was on the Gang Green page last night. It was comical how they went from PUMPED for this game before the game started to this game was meaningless after the game.

Loved the rookies...

Dillard was flying around. I loved seeing his speed at the LB position. JPP gave a nice glimpse of his pass-rush skills. He also showed nice pursuit and almost caught the back on an outside running play near the far sideline. The Anvil was a beast! He got some good inside push on pass plays. On a couple run plays he held his ground when the rest of his linemen were pushed back. He shed the block and made the plays. Of course Victor Cruz wins the gameball. If he gets cut and they keep Moss again, I’m not watching Game 1, out of protest.

What did you guys think of Gerris? He played like a man possessed. Any chance his team-leading tackle total will boost him back up the depth chart?

Wilkinson

he has to stay relatively injury-free, and keep playing and playing with consistency to what he did in that first preseason game…then he might have a chance.

Dillard got beat bad one play when he covered the TE one on one.

I thought the first teams looked too much like last year. They got outplayed in the first half. They couldn’t run on offense, and I didn’t think that got enough pressure on Sanchez.

ONE QUESTION GUYS?

Sorgi or Bomar?

Bomar!

The kid has a ton of upside. You might say Sorgi could be a more helpful back-up since that’s his career role, but he’s still learning the offense.

Cruz.

I'ld take Bomar too..

but I would be surprised if the Giants don’t keep 3 QBs on their roster…I mean we could lose Bomar if they don’t do that. Esp. since right now, as I see it they are closer to being on PAR. Both guys did well in this first preseason game. I do like Sorgi’s experience with being a backup, although for a different offense, but he looked good back there…. more so then what I thought would happen.

Based just on last night?

I like Bomar. He has more zip on his passes and without Cruz bailing him out, we would all be questioning Sorgi’s decision making

It's only preseason......

but I am very concerned about the kick off/punt return game. Did they ever got the ball over the 20 during the return.

by rbman3 on Aug 17, 2010 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

It fluctuated around the 20 yard line on kick returns.

Don’t know why…nobody staying on their blocks long enough??? We’re so going to miss HIXON!

ESPN

I give them a huge Wet Willie, especially Teddy for his post game rant about the Giants going “through the motions”. You think he still remembers us ruining his perfect season, his face was getting all red just talking about the Giants. It must be hard to suppress that hate.
