Around SBN: Jeremy Lin Continues Rampage, New York Wins On Road

For all of you who wanted the Giants to pursue middle linebacker Kirk Morrison in free agency this off-season, Ralph Vacchiano tweets that it is something Morrison apparently also wanted.

I really wanted this to happen

I saw a parallel between Kirk and AP in that Kirk Morrison was also a slightly under the radar free agent that was productive. I had a very very good feeling about Morrison and thought he would be a perfect fit in our defense. He seems like hes a good personality and versatile linebacker with good blend of size and ability. It may have been mostly a gut feeling, but I really wanted Morrison.

he def wanted it to happen

he kept asking all the giants players on twitter to follow him….lol.

It wouldn’t have been a horrible move….IMO

did he really? lol interesting

and yeah i felt like he could have played SAM or MIKE

by IL DUCE 89 on Jul 9, 2010 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

na man....

he’s a stretch at MIKE (that’s why Oak let him go).

IMO he could be an ideal 3-4 WILL but we already got one of those.

SAM…no way, his problem is defending the run and shaking blockers off….

he’s a great cover guy though….

I thought a traditional Tampa2 MIKE may be more of a better fit for him but we ain’t a traditional tampa2 so i think that’s why they passed…..

yeah see I never new much of what kind of player he was

he just looked good in a uniform and had good numbers … idk i think Fewell could have worked him in at Mike and done some things, who knows. so who do u think if gunna be our MIKE? Gerris (if healthy) or will Goff beat him out

I researched the hell outta him.....

his numbers were outstanding…but he came from Oak where the defense is on the field 75% of the time.

I think Goff wins the job outta camp.

haha thats a good point!!!

and i don’t like Goff I’d actually rather see Gerris start week 1 (only of course if he earns it)

that's what makes it fun....

some say Dillard will be the guy by years end…..and I don’t think that’s totally out of the question either.

Who Cares what Kirk was interested in

Any time the raiders dont over pay you on defense that means you reall are not that good because say what you want, Al knows defense…….. im glad the Brass isnt as silly as some of you guys who wanted morrison, dnt just look at #’s and madden the guy really isnt the style of MLB that we desire………. Goff definetly wins the position, he was simply more productive in 4 games than Wilkinson has been in 5 years, with that being said i think he also played very stiff like his personality but from all accounts he is loose and ready and he is the only MLB prospect we have that will knock your damn head off.

I for one do.

maybe it’s silly but I like the fact that he wanted to come to NY. I know it really doesn’t matter at this point b/c it’s over and done with….but it’s a breath of fresh air when you hear players come out and say “i want to play for the Giants”….like Rolle did.

regardless I don’t buy the “he sucks because he plays for Oak” excuse (not that your using it). And I’m not entirely sure he won’t fit the “defense” we play….considering we don’t even really know what we’re doing on Defense.

as for Crazy Al…..well, he’s just that; Crazy. Howard plays LB out there too (The fan base loves him) and he certainly does not suck….and he only got a 2nd round tender.

I think tons of guys would like to play for Giants

How many have turned Giants down that wasn’t a total outbid like Haynesworth?

Giants rep as a players franchise is clear.

time move on Kirk

And it doesn’t matter whether Goff or Gerris starts week 1 (or 2) — Dillard starts week 3 (by which time Gerris could well be on IR, though I’d love for him to make me eat these words)

I dont see Dillard taking the Job from Goff at any point

Dnt underestimate Goff please, he is bigger, just as fast and he is aggressive, I think Dillard becomes a monster on ST, I think he also gets alot of sub package snaps but i for some reason believe Goff will be the MLB we have been looking for

These may be reasons why we passed on Kirk Morrison.

The Oakland Raiders offense in 2009 was ranked #31 and scored 12.3 ppoints per game. Time of possesion was 28:17 for the Raiders and 31:42 for their opponents. Their turnover ratio was -13. What these numbers state is that the offense was obviously awful, which put the burden on the defense and kept the defense on the field for long stretches of time, meaning the defensive numbers are both inflated and misleading. The Raiders defense in 2009 was ranked #23, gave up the 5th worst yards per game and were the 4th worst run defense. The defense actually wasn’t as bad as these numbers would indicate, they simply were on the field too long. Kirk Morrison had 133 total tackles, 109 solo and 24 assisted tackles, 2 sacks and 6 tackles for loss. Decent enough numbers seemingly but when you consider the opposing team ran the ball a league leading 548 times at 4.5 yards per clip, you begin to see how the numbers could be inflated and misleading. Kirk’s 6 tackles for loss on 548 times run at means he barely made any impact tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Thomas Howard had more tackles for loss with 54 less tackles. Kirk also didn’t record an interception and had 1 pass defensed on 438 passes against, which means he wasn’t an impactful pass defender. The way I interpret these numbers is if the offense was halfway decent then he wouldn’t have had all those tackles. He also wasn’t a game changer or an impact MLB, so by no means do I think we should have traded for him.
