'Over & Under': Steve Smith Edition

Wide receiver Steve Smith set a New York Giants' franchise record in 2009 with 107 catches, the first receiver in team history to reach the magic 100-mark.

Can the silky-smooth Smith, one of the league's best route-runners, do it again?

Let's make Smith the subject of today's 'Over & Under' game. I will put the number right at that magic 100 mark. So, do you think he goes over that number or under it? I am taking the 'under,' but not as a knock on Smith. I just think more passes will head in the direction of Hakeem Nicks, Kevin Boss and a few other guys. There are only so many pass completions to go around, you know.

How about you? Over or under the 100 mark for Smith?

I’m hoping for a better Defense, and a better running game. Thus less passing needed. Which means less passes going to SSmith. I expect more TDs and another ProBowl trip – but under 100 catches.

Under....

In addition to the possible injury wildcard in any of these kinds of predictions, I expect the Giants to avoid being blown out of the number of games they were last year, and to be playing more from a position of strength than trying to pass their way back into games. Further, Smith isn’t going to “sneak up” on the league as much this year, as he’s proven what he can do and it’s enough that defensive coordinators will have to make adjustments to minimize him. And, there are other receiving weapons on this team, and the more the ball is spread out among them, the harder it will be to defend the passing game. None of this is a knock on Smith, he’s just become enough of a weapon that he’ll draw focus and free things up for others. I expect him to have a fine season, but I think under 100 catches, thouogh he may be more valuable and the team more successful that way.

More run + better distribution = 75ish catches

I’m with Ross and Cranky.

The Giants will have more ground game and offensive balance and there will be more receivers in the mix, particularly Boss and running backs (if healthy). Smith will still have a Pro Bowl year and he’ll be just as important if not more as a true possession receiver on an 11-win SB contender. Yeah, you read that right and you read it here first.

Over

My thinking, is he accomplished 100+ pretty quietly last year. At least for me, by the time the season was ending, I checked and I was pleasantly surprised he was up at the 100 catches mark. But then again, I don’t really pay attention to Fantasy Football.

Plus, he mentioned he wants to break out this year and do even better than last year.
So, with the Giants passing game coming to elite levels and I (like most) also want the running game to come along like the Giants of old…I think this offense is going to be quite balanced. So another quiet 100 catches for Smitty this year. If they don’t run for 1st down on 3rd and short it’ll be on Smitty. And that’s not including the 3rd and longs – that’ll go mostly to Manning’s comfortable receiver.

With 27 Tango...

I say over 100 catches, probably in the same range as last year. I think his TDs will increase, along with his YPC. I think the running game will only help his totals increase, because a good run game will open up the pass. Now, if someone could please teach Gilbride the intricacies of playaction passing, we would be set.

Over

Nobodys production has to go down for the running game to produce more, with a better running game, it will become easier to complete passes so just because they have less attempts, they might have close to as many completions. Also, a more balanced attack means less stalled drives, leading to more offense, as does an improved defense, which I believe we have. But if somebody had to go down in production, i would guess it to be manningham

Not to diminish Smith, sure he will mature and more YAC but as above, many more to Nicks, Manningham, Boss (we hope!) and don’t forget Barden! Of course, 1 obligatory reception each to Hedgecock and Bomar. :)

and it will be fore the best of the team too. Nicks, HAM, Barden, Beckum…hopefully a RB like Bradshaw or Brown…I say Smith goes around 80, but that’s not a bad thing cuz those 27+ catches or so go to someone else.

Spread the damn ball around.

he is to Eli what Wes Welker is to Brady. Whenever we need 8-10 yards Smith will be there waiting. He essentially turns into a substitute for a running game if we get jammed up.

Plenty of work to go around for Nicks and Manningham on top of this.

by Flynner on Jul 27, 2010 8:50 AM EDT reply actions

+1 Flynner

everyone thinks 107 catches was like an annomoly or somethin, he is eli’s safety valve, he will have 100 plus catches every year, now if he can get some YAC, he would be in the best overall WR category but hes working on that right now.

Brady doesn't have much else other then Moss in that passing game.

that’s all he throws to is Welker and Moss.

Nicks, Boss, HAM..all 3 would’ve been ahead of everyone else but those 2 on the Pats.

Eli should be spreading the ball around. If Nicks ends up with less then 50 catches, HAM less then 60, and of coure Barden, Beckum and the RB’s largely absent from the offense…that wouldn’t be a good thing.

I’d rather see about 15 of those catches go to Jacobs and Bradshaw as they run out the clock in the 4th.

Ben Watson had 29 catches last year. Chris Baker had 14. That’s less then 3 catches a game to the TE.

last year was a bad year for them. Normally Brady spreads it around.

by ryanwk628 on Jul 27, 2010 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

In 2007 (didn't play in 08)

Ben Watson had 36 catches (tied with Jabar Gaffney, the 4th WR), Kyle Brady had 9.

Maybe pre Moss and Welker he did, but once those 2 got there its been no more of an option then Kevin Boss is to the Giants, probably less so.

That may change now with drafting 2 TE’s and Welker a bit of a ? coming off that injury.

We shouldn't be jammed up - ever

There are too many options on this team to ever rely on one person that much. Eli had a habit of focusing in on Plax. I never thought he gave Toomer enough looks. He better not revert to that behavior with Smith. Nicks, Manningham, Boss, Beckum, Brown (if healthy), and Barden should all be viable options.

by GhostDini on Jul 27, 2010 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed

Eli did focus on him, but I think this is because he was always where he needed to be, and open. You gotta earn that many looks and he did

No way he goes over. If he does, it’s bad news, period. There’re lots of options for Eli and all should be used.

Who's to say...

that we aren’t going to see more passing by the Giants overall? I mean, if our passing attack really starts clicking, maybe that is a direction the offense may turn. Using the pass to open up the run. We have a good group of WRs, an awesome QB, it is not a stretch to say that the passing #s could greatly increase this year. I am an old school, midwestern type of footbally guy, which means I love the other way, using the run to pound it out in order to pass a few times a game. BUT, it is possible that Eli may start throwing a lot more than the past. Just a thought…

by CCE718 on Jul 27, 2010 9:00 AM EDT reply actions

OVER

I dont think having a better balance with the run game and other WR’s will affect smith because the other WR’s couldve had better #‘s than they did last year if it wasnt for drops and bad route running…….. also lets stop pretending that the Giants pass offense was some well oiled unstoppable machine, that would be ficticious, the offense was just as damn bad looking as the defense in those last few games so IMO steve smith still left some on the table………. also a better run game just makes his #’s increase, I say 100 plus catches is just his every year thing no matter who else excels………………………….. OH YEAH dont be fooled, the cat has been let out of the bag, the Giants will pass even more this year, they just dont want the league to know and prepare for it, dnt get me wrong they will get back to running but we will be a heavy pass team as well.

hes Eli’s go to guy and therefore opposing defenses will key on him and make Eli go to his second and third reads.

by ryanwk628 on Jul 27, 2010 9:10 AM EDT reply actions

its kinda hard to key on him

when Nicks will be just as dangerous maybe even more dangerous from a deep ball standpoint, dnt forget HAM, who is back running crisper routes, I think it will be hard to key on one person because of the talent we have and the way we are built ( sorta like the vikes, you know who the go to guy is but you cant forget harvin and shinacoe cause they will beat you just as bad)

by Blue Gates on Jul 27, 2010 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions

107 catches

means you have to key on him. Yes our other guys are good, but Smith dosent drop em. Its like in the NBA, you dont let the guys with the best FG% get open looks. Make other guys beat you.

by ryanwk628 on Jul 27, 2010 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh really

is that why ray allen, lebron james, dwayne wade, Durant and guys with good FG% always are the ones beating teams????……. the moral of the story is you cant stop a good player who is consistent as smith is. If it was that easy Brandon Marshall and others wouldnt put up those type of #’s in consecutive seasons.

As much as I would like to see the running game flourish, I can’t say that I am confident that it willl. Considering that Ahmad Bradshaw, Brandon Jacobs, and Andre Brown have had recent surgery, it is hard to know if they will be thier former selves. Steve Smith has proven himself to be the key to many locks in terms of getting the Giants out of trying situations. In a away, he reminds me of Toomer. IMO, the passing game will be more critical to the Giants success then we think and SS will definitely be one of the primary go to guys.

First, I believe the Giants running game and o-line will set out to dominate once agin.

Second, the continued maturity of Nicks and Manningham should reduce the number of catches by SS.

If the running game goes as planned

then under. Plus, I don’t like having one player be so far ahead of the second place guy, it can lead to a focus on that player to the detriment of others (i.e. the Cards game, where Eli forced a pass to Smith when Boss had his man beat down the field).

Hopefully the running game and the defense show up this year, if we are not playing from behind in the second half of games then ther will be no reason to pass as much. Plus there are so many weapons for Eli to use Steve Smith’s numbers will go down but the overall offensive production will be the same.

I dont see how he keeps up the pace with Nicks, Manningham, Boss, Ramses!, possibly getting a greater share of the distribution this year. Not to mention hopefully the running game is back, hopefully the defense is greatly improved and that should mean that the Giants are not trailing late in as many games and just heaving the ball to catch up.

Over 100

Having a balanced offence isn’t gonna take away his touches we still are going to throw the ball just as often. Having a defense make stops on 3rd down is going to offer him more opportunities, and having other quality WR’s will keep him from being double teamed and get him open a bit easier too. I expect over 107 to be honest if he can avoid injury (knock on wood)
