NYG Sign Keith Bullock
Keith Bullock wanted to become a Giants and he got his wish.
http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5407144
Just walking the streets of New York gave me my edge back," said Bulluck, 33, a former Pro Bowl player spent the last 10 seasons with the Tennessee Titans. "Some of those walks were tough, man. Like when it's raining or sleeting or it's just cold out. And your knee aches. I wasn't 100 percent at the time. But the energy of it all helped me. Just the people, the good attitudes, the bad attitudes, just the whole vibe of the metropolitan area. If you're from there or have ever been there, you definitely know what I'm talking about. I'd have to say this is a dream come true.

and I think its a good move.
Dunno what the contract details are, or exactly where the hell he’s gonna play…but he’s a vet and when he was healthy, he’s an All-Pro caliber guy.
Who knows what his health will be like and I doubt he’ll be that great again, but even if he’s 80%, he’s better then a lot of LB’s out there.
Of course, there’s always the chance he’ll completely flop, or of course…the chance he’s still Keith friggin Bulluck and All-Pro caliber, which means we’z gots a steal.

NFL.com says 1 year
I’ve although heard 2.5 mil
And
he will play MLB, bring passion, intensity and sorely needed leadership to the defense!

I love the move.
Already posted it in the fanshot, but the more I think about it the more I like it.
Worst case scenario, we have depth at a position that’s a big ?.
Best case scenario we have a pro bowl caliber MLB.
Great move by Jerry IMO.

Unanimous approval, so far
We all knew JR was going to make a move. This looks like a good one, IF he can still play (he’s coming off knee surgery.) I wouldn’t be surprised if JR comes up with more moves before the season starts.
About time
Seems like the first thing the Jints should have done after the season ended : sign a veteran !
I’m glad we did it, let’s hope it works out.
Has Bulluck played MLB in the past ? Isn’t he a Will ?
Bulluck’s first team visit was July 19 at the Meadowlands. He showed up without a knee brace — a heartening sight just seven months after surgery — and the Giants staff led him through a series of linebacker drills in sweltering conditions. Head coach Tom Coughlin, a Syracuse alum himself, was one of Bulluck’s strongest advocates, but the club wanted to wait a day to see how Bulluck’s knee responded. When he woke up Tuesday without swelling, GM Jerry Reese offered him a contract and the starting middle linebacker job.
well…..
Go New York Go!
Hmmm
At the time they didn’t know for how long/how much he’d signed and they knew Reese promised him he’d be a starter ?
Hard to believe.
well..he's Keith Bulluck....
this isn’t Danny Clark or Kawika Mitchell.
If he’s healthy, he’s still better then 80-90% of LB’s in the NFL, even at his age. But of course, the health (and age) is a bit of a risk

I don't know the player so I'll take your word on that ...
So we got Boley – Bulluck – Sintim going into TC ?
really?
I’m surprised (counting 2 now) that people don’t know who Bulluck is. He’s been one of the best LB’s in the NFL for a long time.
Yes, if he’s been told by Reese he’s starting, he’s starting so I’d assume that’s our LB lineup.

Quarter of a world away
Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with what’s going on with the Gmen …
not saying he's one of the best in the NFL now tho...he's 33 years old
and coming off a major injury, so there’s risk (contract is perfect tho…). But I can’t see how he’d be worse then Pierce ever was.
Brings a lot of what Pierce had too: heart, determination, leadership..all a that good stuff. Also speed, even at 33, that Pierce never had. Hopefully he’s not a bonehead like Pierce tho….

Peyton May Have The Wins!!
But Eli Will Have The Rings!!!
Which should be a good indication
Of how well Bulluck can perform when healthy.

i have no idea who this guy is.
but since he’s a linebacker i guess its good lol
This is perfect!
He isn’t a long term solution, but hell give Dillard some time to learn the position. I was a big Sean Weatherspoon fan last april and was praying the Giants would draft him, but everything worked out better than I had hoped. Bulluck brings everything to the table that Weatherspoon would have, except for the upside. He is a versatile outside linebacker who can play inside, and his athleticism makes him a perfect fit for the Tampa 2 Mike linebacker role. If he has two more good years, that would do wonders in terms of giving dillard a chance to mature.
Exactly right
He buys the Giants time – a year or two – to figure out the Mike long term. Another veteran presence for a young defense.
Exciting news!

JR certainly has quite a few options
for bundling some players to trade for…what? An RB, maybe? An OL?
Or
a 4th WR, don’t need help at RB or the OL in my opinion.

We won't really know where we really need
help at least until training, but at WR? I guess you’re thinking about the loss of Hix? You could be right, esoecially if Moss is removed from the equation.
Smith, Nicks, Ham, Barden
WR’s probably a position the Giants would trade from, then for. (and they shouldn’t be trading any of these guys…)

by FreeBradshaw on Jul 25, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions
I really believe JR's going to try put together a package of guys like Moss,
Wilkerson and one or two others to get a starter type or solid backup for whatever spot they feel is their weakest. Iagree they wouldn’t trade the guys you cite and probably not,, as #56 says below, Beckum
after Bulluck...is there really anything?
OL has a lot of players, most likely Seubert and Petrus and Diehl can fill in accordingly. RB has 5 guys in the mix. With Bulluck, now guys like Goff and Wilkinson provide that quality depth at LB too. I’d like to keep Wilk too, in 07 when he was actually healthy he was dynamite as a reserve LB.
Trading guys really hasn’t been Reese, or the Giants MO…really ever, has it? (around the NFL too, its rare to see trades). Also, Moss really has no value I’d think…at best, maybe they ship him off for a conditional pick.
Go New York Go!
by FreeBradshaw on Jul 25, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions
I think we have a surplus of players.
He’ll try to get some value for them, maybe just draft picks. We certainly have the right #s at RB, but the three who look like the best are coming back from injury as is Ware. Gartrell isn’t a statrter RB, or at least he hasn’t shown he is. We seem to have addressed the DL problem and the DB problem. The OL looks okay, but we might be able to get better than we have for backup. Anyway, I’d be surprised if JR makes no more moves.
if JR can get something for the guys you mention
moss, gerris, gartrell….I will bow down to his greatness
you have to wonder if a healthy Rich Seubert makes Guy Whimper expendable? He could be another guy to add to the pot….but still what you can get in return is minimal considering those are all guy who I personally would not be shocked to see them cut (aside from Wilkinson)
"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
I agree
a lot of those guys aren’t worth much, maybe we could get a Snickers bar and a 6th or 7th round draft pick. mmmmmm Snickers
I agree with all three of you above
while adding that JR will do his best to get something for the expendables. Okay, it would be unlike him not to try. I retain faith in his magic.
Who's low man on the totem pole?
Did the Giants have enough room for Bullock? If not, who do you foresee being dropped? I know everyone wants Moss to hit the road, but with Hixon down, and assuming Moss is gone, will Barden/Hagan/Jennings be enough depth at WR?

Hey guys I'm a Cowboys fan who lives in Tennessee
Actually really close to Titans stadium.
I’ve watched Bulluck his whole Career and here is what I think.
First the Titans have a history of treating older players like dirt, escpecially after an injury, see Steve McNair, Jevon Kurse, Eddie George, among many others. Bulluck wanted to be signed last year and was none to happy he didn’t get a contract and I dont blame him.
Keith Bulluck is one of the better cover linebackers in the league. Capable of taking a tight end or back easily. He has good hands and makes some good catches too. He can and will intercept the ball.
Kieth wasn’t Ray Lewis, he wasn’t going to lay someone out but he was solid and missed few tackles, now tennesse has had huge defensive tackles who cover up the guards and that let him roam and he was very good at it.
Maybe one of the most underrated playerrs in the league.
BUT he had a sugnificant injury but I heard him doing n interview a month ago where he said he was feeling good and ready to go, but he’s also looking for a contract. It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t ask for the one year deal because he thinks he’s due one more big contract and said so himself.
I think the Giants will be much better for it if he’s healthy.
Thanks for the info
All of that is what we’ve been missing at LB.
But than there’s the injury problem. I really hope he can stay healthy because as FB said, him at 80% is probably the best LB we’ve had in a while.

This is the NFC East and
Historically I’d want a mike that stuffs the run but with all the DEs we have a MLB that can cover could be the way to go; it gives some options for blitz packages. Remember being astonished watching Singletary covering WRs way down field, but I’m not expecting that.
Personal experience tells me no swelling the next day is a good sign, but I hope Tom takes it easy with this guy. Someone with his track record is not going to pace himself.
Us old guys are like antique airplane motors (P&W’s, Merlins), ya gotta make sure their properly warmed up before you take off.
Conan!, What is good in Football?!
Daa.... to run between the tackles,
To drive the linebackers before you,
And to hear the lamentations of the cheerleaders.

I Like it I Like it
he is good player with no off the field problems. He is very down to earth but a work out guy also. My cousin played with him at Syracuse back in the ’90s and they still talk from time to time. Good guy and if nothing more a little more expierence and a little more depth
Not to mention
he didn’t play 2 regular season games and still finished 27th in tackles last year. Our leading tackler was 63rd and that was a CB/S in Thomas. Much better!
Really?
Who was your cousin? I was in high school when Bulluck played at Syracuse, so those teams helped define me as a sports fan. I’m ecstatic he’s on the team, one of my favorite players for the last 10 years.

I sort of laughed for a second
I mean no offense, but with a name like Pilon, I hope he was a very good OT! The verbal lashing he would take with that name alone would be intense.
New City
I have a number of friends from college who went to HS in New City in the same class as Bulluck (we’re the same age). He was then at Syracuse (along with Will Allen, Tyree, McNabb) when I was in Ithaca, so I’ve been following him since ‘96. If nothing else, he’s a leader and a team player and will provide valuable education to our LB corps and leadership on the field. If he’s half of his all-pro form, he’ll be a great asset to our team this year.
this is good news!
This is a move we discussed in the offseason, and I think its a great fall back move for this team to shore up its deficient area. Best case scenario, if he’s at least 80% of Keith Bullock, as FB said, that’s fine. Worst case scenario, if he’s injured, and hardly plays, were only on the hook for 1 year and 2.5 mil, which is nothing. It’ll provide depth at the position as well. Now, Goff and Dilliard coming off the bench sounds much better than as starters.
That said, this is an indictment on Goff and Wilkinson if you ask me. This is JR and TC saying we don’t have a starting MLB in our mix.

And your knee aches. I wasn't 100 percent at the time.
The man tore his ACL 7 months ago. Rain and sleet makes all those old injuries come back. Give him a break.
But agree, definitely a solid vet signing. Guess the FO decided having Boley and Tuck as the “locker room leaders” wasn’t enough.
that's part of what bothers me....
seems like this move was made A) either b/c the Giants want to push Goff/Wilkinson/Dillard or B) they really don’t have the confidence in those kids that they may have initially led on.
this is a temporary fix….and i’m not even sure “fix” is the right word.
I guess i was kinda hoping to find our MIKE this year (or at least have an idea who would be able to take over long term)….and this move make me feel like that’s on hold for a year….
plus a guy coming off ACL surgery 7 months ago….

"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
I guess Mr Dillard and Mr Goff aint working out as planned
This oughta be interesting this year. We’re gonna love Antonio Pierce’s assessment of this from ESPN.
For anyone who doesn’t get it. Total sarcasm
One year deal
They are probably hoping that the one year will help Dillard learn from Bullock and be ready to step out as a starter next year.
Good signing. Addresses the one major weakness (outside of kicking)
The way I see it
The Giants felt they needed a veteran presence. Perhaps the young guys looked wide-eyed. Perhaps they need a calming influence who can take the pressure off. Whatever the reason, I’m not ready to say that the Giants are worried about the young guys.
If healthy, Bulluck serves a positional need and a leadership need. If he’s not healthy, then he’s an inexpensive, 1-year veteran presence to help assist the young guy who fills the positional need.
I don’t see a negative to the signing.
I'll go along with that
I don’t really see how it can be percieved as “negative” either.
but I do think this is a blow to Goff and Gerris….
"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
Remember that in a perfect world
we would have drafted McClain and given him the starting job on a silver platter for maybe the next ten years. This way they know that they still have a shot in the future (maybe not Gerris).

its a Giant step forward
Great move! Veteran leadership, mentor for Goff and/or Dilliard and TIME to see if we really do have the MLB of the future on our team or if we still need to go out and get one. A one year deal on the cheap. Its a great move. At the very worst he’s going to have a lot to teach Dilliard and Goff. At best, if his knee is O.K. and he hasn’t lost his wheels, we have a very capable MLB to fill the position of our greatest need for a year or two while we plan and develop talent for the future. Hope his knee is O.K. and can’t wait to see him hit somebody while he’s wearing Giant Blue!

Bullock must have shown something in his workout to be signed and “promised” the starting MIKE position. No matter how you look at this it is a low risk move, the possible exception being damage to the psyche of Goff and Dillard.
Either Goff or Dillard is the MLB for this team (Dillard most likely) . It is just a question of when. Gerris might have won the starting slot – and then gotten hurt again. Bullock may win the starting slot – and then find he cannot last a whole season.
I expect to see Dillard starting late this season or next.
I wouldn't worry too much about this damaging the psyche of Dillard.
He hasn’t yet had a chance to prove himself, and more than likely knew coming into this season he wouldn’t be starting anytime soon.
Goff/Wilkinson on the other hand…

Reminds me of the Sam Madison signing
Get a vet in here with something to prove, as well as a guy that can be a coach on the field for the young class of LB’s the way Sam tought our corners everything he knew.
Good signing whether or not he’s an every down player his contributions will be felt across the Linebacking corps. I can say now that I feel confident we will have solid linebackers by mid season.
I've been calling this for months
Back in April it was obvious he was the best linebacker available via free agency and I was saying to my friends that they either will get or regret not getting Keith. Thankfully, they got him. Great move by Jerry.
Keith Bulluck on Twitter
He’s excited and I don’t blame him. The Giants have the makings of a very good team. Playing for the home team doesn’t hurt either.
HAVE FAITH IN JERRY..
i see mostly optimsitic comments reguarding this move.. which is where im coming from as well. i see this as nothing but a positive move by mr. reese from every aspect. i read some doubts in some of your comments as to whether he can still play because of his acl surgery he had 7 months ago. well do u think jerry reese would sign a guy and basically hand him the starting MLB position if he had an inkling of doubt that he couldnt handle it? he worked out for the team and passed his physical with flying colors on a humidly thick summer day in the meadowlands. but they didnt make the decision till the next day.. when the doctors checked his knee for swelling. good to go! prior to his acl injury last season Keith had 127 consecutive starts at LB for the Titans, racking up over 1050 tackles in that time. he’s what we need for now. an experienced 10 year veteran that puts all of our younger more inexperienced LB’s learning curve thru the roof! if your a giants fan you have to love this move… but if u dont… just give it time… you will.
Why isn't this on Giants.com?
I see the story listed on the front page but there’s not article posted about it. How does your team sign a player like Bulluck and not have a story about it within hours? Fail.
The Giants need to get better reporters for their site. I like the influx of videos but the articles and written features are sorely lacking.
Not at all...seems Bulluck is more than his stats
Freedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitudes...
that's a good sign
unlike when the Chargers let LdT go, and they were mostly in agreement that it was time. tells me that he was broken down; Bullock still has something in the tank, as long as his knee lets him use it.
Personallly, I like this move!
And I wouldn’t get too hung up about Bulluck “being the starter”. The man is coming off an injury and I doubt he’ll be playing all the snaps. But by “being the starter” he stakes some pressure off of the younger guys, and allows them to get some playing time without being the focus of the media or offensive coordinators. And if Bulluck can recover to anything close to his former self, it solves the problem in the middle. And more likely, it’ll take him some time to get fully back and that will allow him to sit out a few snaps while giving experience to the young guys. In other words, a short-term phase in period for Bulluck’s recoverey, a chance to phase in Goff/Dillard/Wilk with less pressure and to get to pick and choose by seeming them in some game time situations. And to top it off Bulluck seems to be a solid guy leadership and off field wise, with a short-term contract that isn’t prohibative, so you end up with a modest to high reward out of it with minimum risk. I like it.
great signing
I think this is a great signing. Bullock will add leadership to a relatively young group. He can play outside, and they are thinking of moving him to the middle which I really hope works out. He’s also played for a winning organization in Tennessee so u know he knows how to win and how to act. I’m sure he will be a great example for the rest of the team. I also bet he adds instant leadership to the D. Love the signing
I also like...
That the Giants weren’t the only team trying to sigh him. First, it makes me think that he passed the medical evaluation of an additional set of doctors, which helps my comfort level, and also, that he CHOSE to come here, so he probably WANTS to be here, rather than we were his only chance.
Six teams were interested in him.
The four besides the Giants and Cardinals I’m unaware of at this point but the interest was sure to grow even more.

Proven veteran
A great move whether he starts or backs up, and wherever he plays. But let’s give him a shot at MLB.
After all the ACL replacement players we had last year
I find it difficult to get excited right now. Eagles fans sure seem ready to have McCoy run past him though, a la declining Pierce. This might be an okay stop gap, but this is not going to swing the defense wildly in our direction.
if the Giants signed Mike Singletary in his prime
Eagles fans would still think McCoy would be running past him.

There is nothing bad that can come from this
One year deal, if he is broken, than we are exactly where we were before he came. Minimum we have a vet to show goff and dillard how to be a solid MIKE. Bullock might be 33 but if reese felt that good about him, we should too. The titans fans are pissed they dont have him back, he hasnt been injury prone, just last year. So although the injury is a concern, its only a one year deal. Reese knows the risk, thats why he didnt give him a long term. I am excited.
Great signing
If Bulluck plays at a high level this season then the Gmen hit a home run.
If he is not the same player due to injuries the Gmen have an excellent mentor for Goff and Dillard
I love the acquisition, I really like how this team is starting to round out, and TC hasn’t even started yet.
