Giants' Bruce Johnson Still Working To Prove Himself
For an undrafted free agent, New York Giants' cornerback Bruce Johnson had quite a productive rookie season in 2009. He played in 15 games, picked off two passes -- including one against Dallas's Tony Romo that he ran back for a touchdown, forced two fumbles, defended seven passes and made 30 solo tackles.
All of this while playing a lot more than anyone could ever have anticipated, after injuries made Aaron Ross and Kevin Dockery unavailable. Johnson played so well, in fact, that the Giants made no effort to keep Dockery this off-season. He eventually signed with the St. Louis Rams.
Johnson took some time out of his off-season to answer some questions for me. Our conversation is below.
Big Blue View: You came to the Giants as un undrafted free agent. The team had drafted cornerbacks in the 6th and 7th rounds, yet you chose New York anyway? What made you think that was the right situation.
Bruce: The reason I felt it was the right situation for me was because the NY Giants actually wanted to sign me, instead of having me come just work out to see if they would like me, like the other teams. Right then and there I knew that was the best situation for me, and it was on my shoulders to make the most of it.
Big Blue View: You played more than many people anticipated. Assess your rookie season.
Bruce: When people think of undrafted free agents, they usually think it's someone who is not "game-ready" or as talented as the other guys on the team. I wasn't going to let that "undrafted free agent" label limit my will and drive to make the team. Instead, I used it as a form of motivation. Overall, I would have to say my rookie year was exceptional.
Big Blue View: Your thoughts on the unfortunate Chad Jones situation and, to a lesser extent, Mathias Kiwanuka's motorcycle crash. Do things like that make you re-consider how you spend your time away from the game?
Bruce: When I first heard about Chad, I was mainly concerned with his health and well being. It was a relief to find out that he would be able to walk again. Unfortunately, it was a bad accident that could of happened to anyone. I try my best to stay healthy and out of harm's way.
Big Blue View: What is the biggest thing that surprised you about the NFL?
Bruce: The biggest thing that surprised me about the NFL was actually playing along side or against the top-notched athletes that I watched growing up. Another thing that surprised me was how much of a job this was instead of just a game.
Big Blue View: How much difference is there coming into camp with a year of experience? Do you still feel like you are fighting to make the team?
Bruce: Oh yes! I still do feel like I am fighting for the team, but I am really fighting for my respect most of all, because I still feel like I haven't earned enough. The difference between camp rookie season and this season is now I know how to manage my time better, as opposed to last year when I came in blind and didn't know what to expect.
Big Blue View: A lot of players I have talked to during the off-season indicate that there seems to be a more determined attitude around the ballclub, and around the workouts. Do you sense a difference this season?
Bruce: Yes I do sense a difference. It is fun because there are so many competitors in our locker room who won't settle for anything less than hard work. Everyone puts forth their best efforts for the team. Every time I talk to a teammate, the conversation always ends on a football note, and how ready we are for the season to start. Should be a very interesting season.
Big Blue View: Other than working out, have you done anything to get away for a while during the break between mini-camp and training camp?
Bruce: Yeah, Mon!!! Actually, I just traveled to Jamaica. It was nice to get away and get reenergized before camp starts. I really needed that! Beautiful scenery, great food, great people. Definitely an experience that I won't forget.

Good kid
He is a good kid. That Romo interception still is fresh in our memories, haha.
I am having a good feeling about our secondary for this coming season.

haha yeah
I was watching the game with a friend from Dallas (I forgive him for that, I figure he just doesn’t know any better). Oh, that was great. The guy was sputtering, he was so pissed. That interception and the two KP ints (HEEL KICK!) were just so good.
Nice interview, Ed
Gives us a better feel for what type of person, Bruce Johnson is. And I agree with BB1156, good kid – has a solid head on his shoulders and I wish nothing but continued success to the young man..
Opus smart , lascivio magis , intereo gauisus...
He seems like
A great human being. It is really good to be able to root for good people. Its really refreshing because lets face it alot of young players come to the nfl with a bad attitude. I also dont think im to far off to say that he was our best db last season behind thomas.

Easy to root for an Undrafted Free Agent with his attitude and work ethic

yeah - the kid is OK
You have to like a fourth corner who is motivated and wants to prove something. I wonder what kind of playing time he gets if the first three stay healthy. This guy play specials?
NOT related
It’s quite funny to see that all around SB Nation, fans rate their team between 70 and 90%. So basically everyone expects his team to end the season with a 12-4 record.
Kinda like when you have survey with 80% of people saying they’re cleaver than the average man …
That was my lunch time thinking.
It's no theory,
it’s just weird how people lose all common sense and objectivity when it comes to their team.
I guess I did,
English isn’t my mother tongue.
Looked it up, nicely done CCE718 !
don't worry about it....
it’s a blog….we all know what u meant….

B. Johnson
B. Johnson was a pleasant surprise last year; a brief glimmer amongst the disappointments. Really hope to see him on the team in 2010. Great player to root for.
Hey Ed, if you are looking for something to write about or get some reaction
Fox Sports just posted its Top 10 most overpaid NFL players (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/lists/Top-10-overpaid-NFL-players-2010?GT1=39002#sport=NFL&photo=11252749). Eli and Jacobs were both on the list along with the likes of Albert Haynesworth and Jay Cutler. I wonder what everyone thinks …
Great logic in that post...
Yes, he’s good. But does he elevate the play of young WRs around him? Would the Packers trade Aaron Rodgers straight up for Eli? I don’t think so. Would the Cowboys trade Tony Romo for Eli? No again.
LMAO does he elevate the play of young WRs around him??
Let’s ask Steve Smith, Mario Manningham, and Hakeem Nicks what they think shall we?
And my god, would the Giants trade Eli Manning straight up for Rodgers? HELL NAW. The guy had two productive years, Eli’s 5 for 5. What about to the Cowboys for Tony Romo? Yea right…a quarterback who folds like a lawn chair in big moments, or one who thrives on them…I’ll stick wiht Eli, thanks.

how is not making his young WR better even possible?
I guess…we all get it, last year was a bad year and when you have a bad year, it falls at the feet of the QB (even tho clearly Eli was not the problem).
But how ridiculously uninformed can one possibly get? Eli doesn’t make his young WR better? Maybe if they all had 1000yd seasons…would that be enough?
And you know what? If friggin Manningham was healthy + made some catches he should have, he may have 1000 yds. Nicks could’ve have more yards too if he wasn’t injured the whole year.
But no..Eli doesn’t make his WR better. Smith was destined to have 100+ catches even with Danny Kannel as his QB. HAM would’ve had over 800yds if Kent Graham was winging passes to him. And Hakeem Nicks would Hakeem the Dream if Dave Brown still was running the huddle.

Just imagine if Romo was our quarterback!
Steve smith could have went to the Pro Bow….oh wait.
Well, Mario Manningham could have had a breakout yea….oh wait.
But, Hakeem Nicks could of put up numbers good enough for ROTY considerati….oh wait….

Only way to make last year better for the WRs
would be if Eli of all people would have taugh Ham how to run a proper flag route and stayed healthy, if Steve Smith hadnt dropped that touchdown in the opening drive of the Panthers game, and if Hakeem Nicks would have stayed healthy and not dropped those two passes in the Eagles game (and even then he redeemed himself)
Bold Statement Here
I would not trade Eli even for his more famous older brother.

Eli overpaid!!!
This dude has performed well his whole career, even before 07, he was always clutch, he never complained about his contract, he has been at every offseason workout, he worked with Ham in the offseason last year and look at the turn around, he worked with Steve Smith the year before and look at that turn around, Kevin Boss, the same thing and not to mention he will be working with Nicks this off season so the answer is YES he makes his whole damn team better, this dude might be UNDEPAID considering the market he plays in and how the media is always out for blood. I couldnt ask for a more perfect QB, I wouldnt trade him for ANYONE except MAYBE the dude with the same last name and even that might be a no go considering he has the same amount of rings. Eli is the perfect QB and lets not forget he hasnt even reached the pinnacle of his game yet. I cant believe i even wasted time responding to that nonsense, oh yeah he is also quietly one of the toughest QB’s, he plays through injuries that would typically hamper a QB all the time.
Peyton May Have The Wins!!
But Eli Will Have The Rings!!!
I said this when he signed the deal
He may not be the best QB in the league, but that’s not the criteria for highest paid QBs. He is the franchise QB for this team. This team in NYC. This team he won a superbowl for. This team that wants him to be in town for life. So they paid him accordingly.
Same will be true when the rest of the franchise QBs sign again (Brady, Peyton, etc).
We don't play for the wild card around here kid
Great "diamond in the rough" find
kid played fantastic last year.. looking forwared to watching his progress

what an awful thought
I don’t know about you but I have the ‘07 playoff game vs. Dallas on my Itouch (I think it’s NFL Network version).
When they call the intentional grounding penalty on him (Romo) in the 4th Quarter…. as the Referee is turning on his Mic you hear Tony in the background literally screaming little like a little girl!!! It’s priceless. On another occassion (I think when Osi hit him and he threw incomplete) they show him ripping into F. Adams and he’s flailing his arms and kicking the turf….ON THE FIELD! I’m so glad he’s a Cowboy. Parcells knew it too…..

Not to mention his post game interview....
oh man, what an abomination….guy had a rolodex of excuses. The Refs blew this call, they blew that call, they shoulda stopped the clock on the throw to Witten, blah blah blah

Hahahaha
That’s one thing you gotta love about Eli, never gives the press anything to use, kind of reminds me of Jeter a bit in that regard.

T O
What about that TO interview after that game. Neon orange coat, dark glasses failing to hide his tears. His incoherent blah blah. What about the look on Jerry Jones’ face towards the end of the game. Like andiamo mentioned about the nonprofessional by Romo, etc etc. All this is related to just a single game. Incredible.
