New York Giants News & Notes: Let The Season Previews Begin
Good morning, Giants fans. I guess it's that time of year again: MLB All-Star break over, Madden commercials on TV, football is lurking right around the corner, and focus is being shifted to the 2010 season. The New York Times 5th Down Blog has a preview of the Giants upcoming season, and they see the Giants finishing in second place in the NFC East. Athlon Sports also has a unit-by-unit preview. Both previews point out that injuries played a large role in last years disappointing finish, and that the Giants roster still has many of the pieces that won Super Bowl XLII and went 12-4 two years ago.
The Bluefield Daily Telegraph, of West Virginia, has an Ahmad Bradshaw-centric Giants preview.
The SB Nation parent blog has a post about five veterans who need to "prove it" in 2010. #2 on the list? Osi Umenyiora.
Sam Farmer of the LA Times lists 10 young players to watch in 2010, and the first person he lists is Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas.
Next up in the Giants Summer Questionnaire series with the Jersey Star-Ledger is backup TE Travis Beckum. I remain very interested to see what role Beckum will play for the Giants going forward. I like him as a talent, I just don't really see him fitting in with the offense that Kevin Gilbride and Tom Coughlin run.
Brian Kelley, former Giants linebacker and member of the "Crunch Bunch," entered the college football hall of fame over the weekend. Congrats to Mr. Kelley!
Finally, though he has to date been a disappointment on the field, Sinorice Moss is taking efforts to make in impact for teens off the field.

Now I have a bit of light reading to do…good stuff

Bradshaw
well if some of you guys dont know im Ahmad Bradshaws Cousin…just telling you guys i spent the last week or so with him in the training rooms and on the field…he’s almost 100% and he can finally run better than he has been able to since high school.
Y0UN9-PR0PH3T
damn, that's great!
And to think he was a monster last year and he wasn’t 100%…
thanks for the update looking for Bradshaw to do wonders this year! He’s definitely a fan favorite!

If he can run better
than he has since high school then I cant wait to see the Barry Sanders type moves he pulls out this year
Great News....you should stop by more often
I met AB last year in Albany….he was the only guy who came over and introduced himself to me and my girlfriend after practice… (even though i had my Cweb jersey on).
I got a picture with him and my girl (now ex girl) and he signed my football….in one fell swoop he became one of my favorite players.
This was also not long after the passing of this father (which I could not be more sympathetic)….and he was still a class act.

Beckum
Figure with a full training camp and a year in the system, Beckum could have a Manningham breakout year in some sort of H-Back role, i.e. Chris Cooley.
Guys seem to come into this program with a lot of promise out of the later rounds of the draft and then you dont see them their rookie year, then they breakout in year two. Save for 2007 of course.
For that to work
He needs to have his number called. Not seeing it as being bloody likely in all honesty.
That would be
great if the Giants used a H-Back, but they don’t, don’t even use Boss enough in my opinion.
I found the Bechkum pick in this offense, a bit curious to say the least, don’t think you will see him much.

This
is what I’ve been trying to say for the past 2 years….

ESPN is already touting Beckum's move to another team.
2010 Season Outlook
Beckum would make a good H-back. Unfortunately, the Giants don’t use an H-back. Beckum has good hands and quickness, but he won’t pass Kevin Boss on the depth chart, not least because Boss is a spectacular blocker. And the Giants are already choosing from among a stable of traditional halfbacks. For now, Beckum is a developmental player who’ll someday toil in a new city.
I'm just quoting ESPN
As I’ve posted many times, I certainly don’t think Boss is a spectacular blocker.
This year will be a clear indication then of whether or not Beckum will stick.
Maybe think of it this way. The Giants havent had, for about ten years or so, a TE that can be a competent blocker and pass catcher, and a catch first TE (2000 Howard Cross and Pete Mitchell). Were thinking of Beckum as a H-Back because he has an H-Back’s number but what if he becomes a senior passing option to Boss in the offense with a two TE set. It’s possible he’s more athletic than Boss and is certainly a better receiving option than Hedgecock. Might finally be able to put the FB in the flat play to rest.
Danny what are you talking about?
Shockey was a pass first tight end that was a very competent blocker, above average actually. I do agree that it’d be nice to see a two tight set with both guys threats to catch big passes.

Yes that would be great
but we dont use Boss anywhere near enough to begin, unfortunate that we have so much talent and cant utilze all of it. Better than not having enough talent I guess
Yeah but Shockey didnt have someone lined up across from him that could be a competent pass catcher as a TE. Shiancoe was there but I dont remember him doing much in the passing game.
sadly he was a pass catcher.
who we forced to be a blocker, probably because Jeremy was throwing bitch fits in the locker room and on the sidelines because he wanted the ball.
And than when he would get the ball, he’d drop it and smile about it….good riddance

CBs
Agree with NYT blog that TT, AR and Corey are press corners as long as there is a pass rush.
Assuming that the DL can return to form, I would prefer to see them play press, man-to-man coverage.
But the previews are consistent. No major changes from last year. Giants added some good players (Rolle etc) and if the injured can come back…..
There is reason to be quietly confident for 2010.
quietly confident
pretty much sums it up perfectly. The Giants aren’t getting all the preseason pub, and it’s probably better that way. They look like a good team on paper, and with a little bit of luck in the injury department, they should be one of the better teams in the NFC this year.
2009 Did Not Happen
weve already not had that luck
With the injuries.

Can't believe they didn't include Ladanian Tomlinson
On the old dudes with things to prove list…Marshawn Lynch only came in the league in ‘07 and he’s been on a terrible Bills squad his whole career in a very tough AFC East, one would think Ladanian has more to prove this year after his woeful 2009 campaign.

BLT is done
I don’t know how the Jets fans have convinced themselves that they’re getting 2006 LaDanian, but they’re gonna be sorely disappointed.

I love it.

He's on the Jets
who are basically the AFC hype equivelent of the Cowpokes at this point. LdT has already become his old self since he’s on the Jets. He has nothing to prove.

NFL preseason can destroy predictions
so many times guys go down that really mess up any predictions.
NYTs Piece
The hope is that a healthy Chris Canty can aid the run defense from inside. The 6-7, 304-pounder is a beast – though an injury-prone one
Canty is not injury prone. Last year was the first year in pretty much forever he was injured.
Otherwise I agree pretty much wholeheartedly with it.
