Top Running Back Spot Up For Grabs???
Bradshaw To Start?
We all know that the running game or better yet, lack of a consistent running game hurt us last year. We know that Brandon Jacobs tried to tough it with the knee injury out but he ended up hurting us too. We know that Bradshaw had a pretty good year even though he ran on two flat tires to say the least. The Giants might be moving to a more passing offense with the receivers we have. Bradshaw could do better in the screen game then Jacobs and is a better receiver. So is it possible that he could surpass Jacobs on the depth chart?

I wanted to say Brandshaw
but the natrual order of things dictates that Jacobs goes in and wears down the defense and the AB comes in and picks up big chunks of yardage quickly. Thats just how things should be IMO
I agree...
I like Bradshaw, and I desperately want to see something better than what happened last year, but I don’t see any other arrangement than Jacobs, then Bradshaw.
well....
what also sounds nice is getting bradshaw in there in the begining of the game with jacobs getting 5 carries in the first half… come the second half of the 3rd and 4th quarter, unleash a fresh jacobs on a tired and beat up defense.
i think BJ will start over AB, but i would like AB and either Ware, or brown to get the majority of carries until the 3rd 4th quarter.. then unleash the monster on everyone

Start of games...
I’m usually pretty buzzed but I don’t think they announce the players anymore.

I voted Bradshaw.
I understand that we had a great system in place with Jacobs in ‘07 and ’08, but that’s going on two years ago now. Last year he wasn’t even the most physical running back on the team…AB was, and AB did it with injuries that greatly hinder your ability to run for a living.
I have no problem giving the man who personifies our team name more literally than anyone another opprotunity to prove he still has the ability to beat up defenses (which I’m sure is how it will go down) but last year Bradshaw definitely showed me that when healthy, he can be the feature back on this team, and he can be dangerous.

i remember games where
he showed that sometimes he does his best work in small samples. I can remember games where he was left in there way too long by TC for whole quarters, and just wasn’t moving the rock.
I also remembering AB having some fumbling issues as well. i know we always love the backups, but lets not disregard the current starter just yet. if he runs timid again, then maybe it’s time. but i’m willing to put my hopes on the wide shoulders of a 6’4" 250 lb man, are you?
Not to mention that AB's fumbles came at the worst possible times.
Granted he was fighting for extra yards on a couple of occasions but AB has to be smarter with the ball.

I'd love to know...
who the 4% in this survey that think it won’t be either Jacobs or Bradshaw, think it will be.
GARTRELL!!!!!!!
LOL
Kidding of course.
I voted Jacobs. I thave a gut guess that he has a relatively healthy year and will be very motivated to prove he’s still a runaway train coming down the tracks to wreck opposing defenses.
Still love Bradshaw too! He has the brighter future over the next 2 or 3 years.
I think we’ll have a nice running game this year.
Need I say it?
Rhett Bomar, obviously.

He’d need something more like an anaconda.
Please stop the madness, enough with the vuvuzelas already! I swear to God if I start hearing those things at Giant's games there will be violence!

Bomarc?
Why all this stuff about Rhett Bomar?
If his name sounds cool is it only because we / our parents grew up during the cold war, with air raid drills and duck & cover, and USAF Bomarc anti-aircraft missiles were protecting us from all the Soviet bombers coming over the North Pole?
Bomar seemed familiar to me at first, before I realized that it made me think of the name of the missile. Bomarc’s were the coolest looking missiles you ever saw.
I voted for Jacobs
Until further notice, he’ll be the “starter”, but Bradshaw will see his fair share of touches also.
Derrick Ward
Sometimes I think that “good” running backs are almost interchangeable, that most of the time it is the overall ability of the offensive line to make the holes that matters most. It is only when you get someone at the level of a Jim Brown, Barry Sanders or Adrian Peterson that the talent of the guy carrying the ball begins to make a marked and consistent difference.
Sometimes, though, it seems that a running back seems to mesh with his offensive line and his teams offensive schemes, and he can do things that just don’t happen when he moves to another team. I think that was the case with Derrick Ward and the Giants.
With the Giants he produced whenever he was asked to ( either complementing Jacobs or replacing him ), and he added a backfield receiving threat they have missed. Then, when he signed with Tampa Bay last season, he disappeared.
I read that the Giants didn’t want to pay for two “star” starting running backs before last season, and after signing Jacobs to a big contract, they let Ward be lured away. I think that they made a mistake, and not only because Jacobs got hurt again, Bradshaw had to play while being hurt, and an injury negated Danny Ware in the first game. What they had with Derrick Ward worked, and not only with the “Earth, Wind & Fire” routine. Ward meshed with their line and offense schemes in ways that Jacobs couldn’t, and he gave them additional plays and receiving yards that they couldn’t replace.
Obviously Ward would have helped greatly last year..
But if I’m not mistaken he made the decision to leave in hopes of becoming a feature back somewhere else, something he knew couldn’t happen in NY.

Well, he was sadly mistakened
Looking across the league, there are only a few teams that have a “feature RB”. Most teams now employ at least a two-back system and going to TB was moreless like going to any other team. TB already had Williams and Graham, so carries or touches would presumably be distributed accordingly. Injuries can arise and the opportunity can be had, but it’s not neccessarily the norm!
Leaving the Giants was inevitable with the timing. He was coming off his 1000+yd season and he was looking to cash in (he actually changed agents), plus we had Ware waiting in the wings, so everything made sense at the time. That was then, this is now, so let’s hope everyone had a successful offseason of rehabs and healing!
I think Ward made the best decision
in terms of for him. he was never going to be the man here, and he knew that, with a juggernaut of a man in front of him, and a budding young guy behind him. the Giants also knew they had 3 capable starters on there team, and wasn’t going to overpay for all three to stay. they made there choice, and although i love Ward, i think they made the right choice.
As far as his decision, i think Ward made a wise choice in picking Tampa, as far as the spot being up for grabs. it was the organization which he overestimated. Tampa is in such disarray that he may now be a lost piece in a rebuilding cog. but he clearly could have been starter A on that team – Graham is overrated, and Cadillac is always broken down. so he rolled the dice. unfortunately for him although he was pencilled in as the starter in original depth charts, he played horribly and then a renewed Cadillac came back and – voila! Ward is once again in a 3 back system……if you think of it it’s like a bad episode of The Twilight Zone.
Ward is getting paid a lot of money to sit on the sidelines though.
Not a bad job at all. Besides when his contract expires, he will have the option to go elswhere however, his ability may diminsh by then.

I am an true D. Ward supporter and I must say that your take is dead on.
I never understood the logic in letting DW get away. I am sure that the Giants could have worked something out with DW. He said himself that he loved the Giants and wanted to remain with them but…I just didn’t see the point in trying to fix something that was not broken. Even when Tiki was with the team and Jacobs was back up, it was apparent that Jacobs was not going to be a big yardage back. Oh well.

Again...nobody let Ward get away...
He wanted to leave.
“They left the door open for me and I know they would love to have me back, but it’s a business and the business aspect of it right now is I feel I’m a starter and I proved I can help a team win some games and reach a Super Bowl level…”
Pretty much how he sounded that entire offseason…respected what the Giants did for him, but wanted a chance to be a back on a team that didn’t already have Brandon Jacobs.

and also of note...
Andre Brown was drafted to replace Ward. From what I remember he was excellent in the practices prior to his injury and had a good shot at beating out Danny Ware.

Yup.
Many people were going so far as to say Brown was the steal of the draft before he got injured if memory serves…

How is that working out
for D. Ward? If he had ESP, and knew how limited his touches would be with TB, would have taken less money and stayed here. I mean Cadillac Williams has tore up his knee
at least twice, and can’t beat him out for playing time?

I voted Jacobs but only because I didn’t see a better option. AB is capable with speed and strength but he just can’t move a crowd when a hole collapses.

3 Headed Monster
I hope we return to a great rotation like we had before with Jacobs, Bradshaw and Ward. I think this offense could become fearsome if we don’t depend on one style of play out of the backfield. Additionally I will keep advocating that the Jints need to solicit the help of either OJ Anderson or Rodney Hampton to help Jacobs really assert himself and stay healthy. It can’t hurt can it?
Rhythmos and fresh legs...
…we also had Droughns for the first half of that season. Bradshaw makes more things happen out of a little light. Keep Jacobs fresh to FINISH the game.

Let be realistic
as long as Brandon Jacobs is half way healthy, he is the starter hands down
Peyton May Have The Wins!!
But Eli Will Have The Rings!!!
What about this...
It seemed that last year (I understand Jacobs had a knee injury) that when Bradshaw took carries in the 1st quarter we were able to eat up yards and move the offense along much easier.
So what if we used Bradshaw for the first half and then used Jacobs in the second half when defenses are already tired, I think BJ will be much more effective this way and it’ll help us milk the clock.
Jacobs!!
Better in play action and if healthy… a REAL beast in the pocket protex! But I love Bradshaw’s heart and think he deserves a minimum of 15 touches/game… Its definately a luxory to have both!
Jacobs or Ware will start
90% Jacobs, 10% Ware (if he BEASTS in training camp)
Bradshaw will never ever be the starter. He is a scat back period.
