Bill Parcells or Bill Belichick?
An interesting question on ESPN asks this.
Both have ties to the Giants, so it'd be interesting to hear all of your guys thoughts.
The Poll on Sportsnation is actually closer than I thought it'd be considering Parcells last had huge success in the '80s and the generational gap might take over.
Graham, the AFC East guy chose Belichick, reasoning:
My selection is Belichick based on the number of Lombardi Trophies and the fact that without his work as defensive coordinator, nobody can say for sure Parcells still would have won his pair.
Of course what about the reverse? Would Belichick have been so good without Parcells as a mentor?
We'll never know, so I wouldn't use that against him. So what do you guys think?

tough call
I think Parcells is better at handling personnel- he brings in the right players, makes good safe choices. He’s in the perfect role for himself right now in Miami.
However, I think Belichick is the better technical coach, at least in terms of the pure x’s and o’s of football. I’ve read/ attended plenty of keynote and clinic speeches, tutorials, presentations by many good defensive coaches, but Belichick’s stuff is just intense. Really impressive in his thinking and his gameplanning.
I don’t think the Patriots do the best job in the league of drafting and acquiring new talent, but I do think their coach does the best possible with what they got. Especially on D
Gotta agree with the sentiment on scheming around defensive personnel
The Pats boasted the most impressive cast of scrubs and has-beens in their LB corps I’ve ever seen (outside of my annual post-Thanksgiving football game). They still managed to do all right.
After laboring to dtermine whether Conerly or Simms was better,
I don’t have it in me to vote on Tuna over Belly or vice versa. For sure, it’s close, and dmac provides a good analysis of strengths and differences, etc.. The basic difference is that Parcells is definitely a people person and Belly is a more remote, intellectual type.
I saw this....
and I gotta go w/ Parcells….
both guys are very different, neither one is perfect….they complimented each other very nicely.
but i give Parcells a slight edge.

Interesting
how BBV got Parcells in the lead….
whereas ESPN has Belichick
I know we only have 18 votes….maybe I should have waited before I made this comment.

I roll with the Tuna
Tuna has 2 SB/3 apps but more importantly turned around the Pats ..Jets..Cowboys ..Bill B ..is prbly a better specialized coach on the D side of the ball and he does have 3 titles/4 apps but I think its more impressive what Tuna has done considering the Jets were 1-15 when he took them over and Bill B sucked in Cleveland..Would have like to have seen either one wind down their careers back in Big Blue …At the end of the day both are all time greats and HOF coaches imo !
bill parcells had a fish named after him
for crissakes
"No disrespect to the batter," Figueroa said, "but tacos are good."
All due respect to the Tuna
how many Super Bowls did Tuna win as a head coach when BB wasn’t at his side
as the def. coordinator, you guessed it…zero.

straight up coach?
Belichick. Parcells has perhaps a broader football mind, in that he’s amazing at turning teams around … but Belichick is the emperor, man
You play to win the game!
I hate Little Bill
But you have to give him his due.
Creative defenses, seems to find gold in others cast offs,re-built his offense in a year or 2 to take advantage of a great QB.
And Parcells has quit on 3 teams. Bellichick had that weirdness with the Jets, but that was a 1 day affair.
Parcells
He has never been accused of cheating…could be the end, but here is more reason:
Belichick needs certain players to run his scheme, Parcells takes people with little talent and makes them work harder than they ever have before and makes them winners (see Ray Lucas). Belichick has a great scheme, but Parcells is a great coach.
"stupidity + alcohol = getting your ass beat" AKA the Philadelphia town motto - hotspur
Both greats
I wish Belicheck had the chance to coach the Giants once Parcells left, but oh well. I gotta go with Tuna, cuz without Tuna, there most likely is no Belicheck. Belicheck’s claimed that he’s always a sponge for knowledge from all those around him, and I can’t help but think that he got a bunch of it from Parcells.
I wish both never left.

Can you imagine if Bill B. had taken over the reins after ’91? We might not have had that dark decade…

Story of the Giants
Have great coordinators, then they leave and have success elsewhere.
Tom Landry and VInce Lombardi together way back in the day.
Belichick
John Fox
And probably some more I’m not forgetting.

Schottenheimer too
and of course Romeo and Weiss but they’re not on the others level…..

Belicheck also got lot of his knowledge from spying too
i know everyteam and coach does it but Parcells was never caught doing it
How much?
I always was under the impression that spygate was really blown out of proportion and the stuff he got had minimal importance.

Which one was the one with the excuse note?
“I resign as HC of the NYJ ASAP.”
…Yeah, I’m going with Parcells.
I left my swagger in my other pants.
parcells definitely has the edge here,
considering he wrote similar notes about the giants, pats, jets and cowboys

This one was close
but I’d rather have Parcells. The guy just has superabundant football knowledge and who might you think would have benefitted from being around such knowledge? You never take the student over the master. C’mon.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
I go back and forth on this a lot
When I posted the poll yesterday, I voted for Parcells. Today, I voted for BB. I definitely do put some credence in the “Parcells never won it all w/o Belichick,” but, then, BB never won ANYTHING without Tom Brady.
Ultimately, I think BB is a better coach, because I think he’s better at gameplanning, and slightly better at getting the most out of his guys (though they’re both well above average at that). But, I think Parcells is a much better evaluator of talent. The dude has turned around 5 separate franchises, which is absolutely remarkable. And he’s never had a QB like Brady, and has in fact won SB’s with more QB’s than BB, and almost gotten there with a 3rd (the Jets were beating the Broncos at halftime of the AFC Championship in ‘98). If I were starting a franchise from scratch, and I could hire a 35 year old Parcells or a 35 year old BB, I’d go with Parcells (and then hire BB as the D-Coordinator haha).
2009 Did Not Happen
I agree
One thing that is funny about both:
Parcells benched Simms for Brunner, BB fell into Tom Brady by accident.
Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.
here's my issue with saying Parcells had BB there for the 2 SBs....
BB also had Parcells as well….it’s not like BB was calling the plays and getting the offense up and down the field.
second…..BB had great weapons on Defense….the Offense especially in 1990 was no power house at all.
You look at some of those play calls during the ’90 playoff run and they were huge.
Could BB have gotten those teams to score those points?
I think it was a joint effort…so you can’t overlook Parcells b/c he had BB….it works both ways, BB also had Parcells.

true....
but in his time spent in NY…..
I think they both complimented each other…..
"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
That's actually a very fair description
That I’d completely agree with
Belichick’s awesome with X’s and O’s and fixes any weak spots practically as soon as he sees them.
Parcell has shown to be able to put together good teams.
I like it best when they’re working together.

Parcells
I will take Parcells.Belichick is a great coach but Parcells has a great key for talent and can get the most out of his player. The last ten years we have seen the Giants team quit
down the stretch . It’s happened under Fassel and Coughlin. I thought we were done with that after Tiki left but it happened the last two season again. That would ‘ve never
under Parcell’s.
Parcells
Until future HOFer Tom Brady became the QB of the Pats BB had moderate success. BP won despite never having a great QB. Yes BP had Simms but his weapons were limited.
