Domenik Hixon Out For Season
Scratch all that 'hyper-extension' talk about Domenik Hixon.
The New York Giants wide receiver is out for the season with a torn knee ligament.
The Giants' wide receiver and returner will miss the upcoming season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a practice in the New Meadowlands Stadium on Tuesday.
Now the Giants are missing a key contributor for this upcoming season, thanks to turf that a few players said is soft and needs to be broken in.
"Well, listen, you have to go over there and go on it before you can make some judgments about it," Coughlin said. "We'll be better served now because of the shoes we recommend and so on."

I hate turf!!!!
I know it’s cheaper than Grass, but all the money they spend on players why get cheap on the field?
by Late for Dinner on Jun 16, 2010 2:14 PM EDT reply actions
its not the $$ its the wear and tear
One year they tried grass and it was dirt with green spray paint
That season everyone complained about that
It froze and got slippery in the cold
It turned to mud in the rain
And people complained, why are they so cheap to not have a better field. There is no perfect field
Another season of Sinorice magic!
Serious now…who will be the new returner?
And turf sucks, that`s why FIFA prohibited it on soccer fields.
Yeah, we like NFL here in Brazil.
That could be equal parts greatness and disaster!

Rolle is certainly explosive with the ball in his hands
but i’d rather not have our stud free safety being aimed at from guided missiles who need to prove themselves every week
That sounds like a great idea
I hear Jason Sehorn is really on board with it.

That will be determined in camp … Moss, Aaron Ross, Chad Jones, Manningham, Bradshaw and Danny Ware would probably be your early candidates.

Sad.
Hixon’s always been a fragile player. Very talented, but it just seemed that whenever he was poised to break out, he just had a nagging injury.
Here’s to hoping Sinorice Moss becomes the KR/PR..but I doubt that too.
Andre Brown is the one I got my money on tho.

Chad Jones? They really gonna but a dude that big back there? He did it a bit in college, and I’d say he does it some, but full time?
Manningham? He’s done it less then Brown..pretty sure never

The guy has been hurt every single year post 2007. I don’t want him back there. Too important for the 2ndary.
That’s what made Hixon the best for that. They have enough at the position to where he can focus on it.

when considering the KReturner....you must consider the coach....and the team....
remember when Toomer used to return kicks? he looked like a fish outta water….
I never saw any benefit of having Moss back their either….the guy would fair catch a ball that he should let bounce for a Touch Back and he lets the ball bounce that he should fair catch….on top of that he does NOTHING once he gets the ball….
Sadly I think the best man for the job….will not get the job.

- Mohamed Sanu: A Giant in Two Years-
As much as this sucks
At least we have the depth to overcome it. I feel bad for him though, that really bites.
We never have great returns anyway, so it looks like another year of the same unless we make a cut down day trade for someone interesting, or something along those lines.
This sucks
I kins of saw this coming when I read the course of events. He went down for 5 minutes grimmacing, then got up and bascially walked off with only a little help. That’s what happened both times I tore my ACL. It hurts like a bastard for 5 minutes, but then you can get up and walk and you feel like it’s ok and it will recover. It swells within an hour but it doesn’t feel too bad.
The reason is because you don’t really need it to walk around. it will feel weak and it’s unstable but you can certainly live without it.
But as soon as I saw how it happened and how long he was down I knew. This sucks.
We don't play for the wild card around here kid
Perfect example
of “putting the cart before the horse” – for whatever reason, we just don’t expect these things to happen; maybe it’s that we just hope that they won’t happen.
And we discuss what will or won’t happen, almost as if we are living in an indestructable bubble.
I surely hope that this is not a forewarning of our fortune with injury for 2010-11.
We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
Moss will fill in for Hixon on kr and pr
this is the reason the giants why the giants kept him………backup
Am I the only one? Cruz #3
I’m seeing this guy in all practice higlights and I think he would fit as a KR
And he returned punts in college
Cruz, Brown, Hagan, Moss
Ware on kickoffs, Andre Brown

- Mohamed Sanu: A Giant in Two Years-
I'm the bad guy
but this improves the chances of seeing more of Nicks, Manningham and Barden on the field?
Who’s returning kicks? Who GAF? That should be the least of our worries.
I wouldn’t keep Moss just for kicks – that is ridiculous and taking a roster spot. We should’ve made a move for Henderson who signed with Oak or looked for a ILB that might have been dropped.
Who’s going to return kicks – seriously.
who gives a f$#% about kr/pr?
are you serious? Anyone who knows football knows that field position is absolutely important in the game that we love. That extra 10 yards a good kick returner can give you, or the extra 5 a good punt returner will give you throughout the game is extremely significant, and can be the difference between 3 points, 7 points, or 0 points.
Never underestimate special teams. only novices thinks this game has 2 sides to it.
Nobody is underestimating SP
but I think Hixon is overrated and I think his returns were due to good blocking in the 08 season. I can’t even believe you guys forgive him for that drop against Philly
I want Moss gone as well.
Why not Ware? it’s the perfect opportunity for him to get into the game and USE one of our draft picks to see what he can do. I’d really like to see Bradshaw in that role and lets use that extra roster spot to fish for a ILB
I can't believe
You are hanging on to one play, and still killing a guy for it two seasons later. Gotta let that go. Everybody makes physical mistakes sometimes — Steve Smith dropped a long ball last season, too. Doesn’t mean they don’t do a lot of good things, too.
Time to move on.

"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
Here I Am.....
YES, trade him.
Its coincidental that I said we should trade him for a returner, and then the one returner we have, who is average best, goes down.
So what – we a lost a mediocre WR who steals snaps from emerging stars like Nicks and Smith, and if you like Manningham that much throw him in there too.
I am sorry Hixson got hurt, but in a way I don’t think this hurts the Giants that much because it will force them to move on the issue and gives more of our young developing players a chance……
As I said, and still say – I would have traded Manningham for someone that could have an impact on our return game OR a dependable rotational RB like a Willis McGahee. People forget, in order to get something good, you have to GIVE UP something good. We could not trade Sinorice Moss for a Can of spam – Manningham is good bait – young, speed et al, but I don’t like the drops, the running out of bounds yada yada.
You can have your opinion. I will have mine.

Losing good players
always hurts an NFL. As Coughlin said yesterday, you need a lot of guys to get through a 16-game NFL season, not just your starters. Hixon is a good player who did a lot of things for the Giants. Not as big a loss as some other guys, but a loss nonetheless.
by Ed Valentine on Jun 17, 2010 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, and explain how so many want to expand to 18 games....
What team is going to have anybody left? The notion is ridiculous, who wants to see teams playing in championship games with Practice Squad guys starting?
I love football as much as anyone and would love more games and a longer season. But I don’t see how that would work without expanding the roster to 70 guys and watering the whole product down.
Average at best?
That’s interesting because Hixon had the second highest return AVG behind DeSean Jackson out of returners with at least 10 returns for the year: 15.2 for Jackson and 15.1 for Hixon.
It's laughable
that all of last year and this off-season people have criticized Manningham for his drops. (He had only 3 – three – tres – trois – more than Smith had in Smith’s 2nd year, by the way.) Now some of those same people are suggesting that he be made into a punt returner. If he has hands of stone, how is he going to catch the ball? They don’t let you carry a basket onto the field, you know.
He never returned kicks and returned one punt as a freshman at Michigan. It would be a mistake to put him in that role.
well don't look now....but:
"We have kick returners," Reese said. "My concern would be as a punt returner."
The first player Reese mentioned for the role was wide receiver Mario Manningham, though the Giants might be wary of sending one of their starters out for such a role. Another possibility brought up by Reese is cornerback Aaron Ross, who returned punts in college and might be a backup this season behind Terrell Thomas. There’s also safety Antrel Rolle, though the team probably wouldn’t want to risk the $37 million they gave him by standing him under a punt with defenders in a full sprint headed his way.
"Throw the damn ball to Kevin Boss" - Andiamo708
Rolle
I know it sounds insane, but he is really good with the ball in his hands

Really
You want to take Eli off the field to run the Wildcat?
What’s our backfield looking like in the Wildcat free?
Let me answer you question in dollars. If the offense took 5000 snaps last year and Eli gets 15 mil a year then he gets paid 3k a snap.
We're talking about 3-4 plays
maybe 5 plays a game.
I do not care what Eli’s salary is. He’ll earn it when he’s playing. Its completely irrelevant in this case. So he’s not on the field for a few running plays.
That’s what you want him out there for? He’s getting paid $15 million, so he’s gotta earn it by HANDING THE BALL OFF????
All the bitching and complaining about Gilbride and his “lack of creativity”, and they’re implementing the wildcat to help that…and then complaining?
I dunno what the backfield looks like. But it probably involves a RB

by FreeBradshaw on Jun 16, 2010 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not complaining about Gilbride
where did you get that.
I believe you have to have your best players on the field at all times and I believe the Giants are betting with Eli on the field instead of off it.
if Eli isnt’ there the threat and the strongest part of our Offense is out of the game (the WR’s crazy enough).
If you guys dont’ get the money side of the argument then lets drop it.
Most wildcats actually
have the QB stay on the field, lined up as a receiver. Like most of the time
It may not be the best way to utilize his talents, but it certainly adds another element to the offense. I don’t think we’ll be sending Eli out on routes to catch deep balls a la Thigpen and Flacco, but I if Gilbride gets creative enough, he could get him involved to add even more misdirection to the package (like Pennington a year and a half ago).
Plus our OLine and RBs are still a strength on paper. I hope they can put it together this year so we at least have the chance to get a bit creative.
- Mohamed Sanu: A Giant in Two Years-
Don't get the money side of it?
do you? There is no money side of this. Eli is gonna play plenty. If you sub in some running plays for the wildcat…how exactly would Eli earn his money handing off vs. a RB taking the direct snap?
Eli will earn his money.
This is to change it up, every now and then. Not a regular occurrence like the Dolphins do, and I can’t see it any other way. To throw something out there to let their opponents know they’re gonna do it.
If you can’t see the this would be, if its in there at all, just a sporadic thing to throw off the defense…well, then yea…..

Megget...
wouldn’t have dropped that ball against Philly in the playoffs two years ago.
Bye Hixon – go watch games with Tyree.
If memory serves me right, Eli overthrew a wide open receiver...
two years ago too, so does this mean we put him on waivers? Hixon got hurt getting ready for THIS season. It’s NOT a good thing, for him or the team, and it wouldn’t be regardless of if he caught or dropped a ball two years ago.
Hixon
was using a roster spot and we already had too many WR’s.
He’s a good player but if we thought he was that good then why did we draft Hicks and Barden two seasons ago.
I think Hixon, at least coming into this week....
was ahead of Barden, Hagen and Moss in the depth chart at wide receiver, and thus had a roster spot as a wide receiver. The fact that he was also a decent kickoff and punt return man added versatility to that roster spot. Yes, he was a wide receiver, but it was a strong roster spot and not a weak one. Thus far Barden has ONE career catch. He may become great, and I hope he does, but he wasn’t ahead of Hixon at this point. Moss hasn’t done anything thusfar, and Hagen is a useful reserve receiver who also adds value on special teams, just like Hixon, though less additional value in both roles than Hixon. I assume you mean Nicks above, and I assume the Giants drafted Nicks and Barden to add a playmaker and depth to the receiver corps and to be preparted for situations just like this.
this sucks even though im an eagles fan
I just had acl surgery a week ago and its not easy. But maybe the Giants are taking the Birds luck from last year
Our injury luck sucked last year
We don’t need your injury luck to pile on.
Sorry to see Hixon go down the first practice of the year. He’ll be missed …on special teams. He was gonna have a hard time making this team anyway but they’ll be ok.
This wildcat nonsense is just that nonsense. It has nothing to do with Eli being your highest paid player and has everything to do with taking your best offensive player off the field or the ball out of his hands.

If by advancing playoff teams
you mean the Colts and Saints, well not everybody has the luxury of having Peyton/Brees

look at the previous year as well. Cards and Steelers.
OK
Both the Steelers and the Cards have added “WC” packages (remember antrell rolle bombing to fitz who dropped it?). It may have been post-playoff run, but still shows it was in the works and on the teams minds.
I’m not saying we need to run the wildcat to the t, but I would like to see some variation as a new surprise package to at least toss around in pre season. Some trickery is nice every now and then, and the Steelers are a good example. They have done HB/WR passes, different screens and reverses, and even a shotgun punt from big ben. Just a couple things for KG to mix it up.
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."
it is too bad hixon is out
but that leaves a few spots open for some competition. Lets get Barden on the field
what the hell is a justin bieber?
this is why
the giants shouldve drafted trindon holliday.

I used to be OK with gettin Fat Al
I didn’t know how bad his attitude really is. But this guy is a clown. He doesn’t deserve to be on any contender, and the Giants locker room is no place for him.
He’s a POS.

Agree on FA
Did not know of the March April discussions with the Skins. The man is a liar among other things.
Hixon? No rush. Lots of time. It is not like a punt returner has to know the plays or anything (TC says he has a kick returner).
A DB named Johnson might step up and make Ross a candidate to return punts (if he is the third CB then I am against him as a returner).
Then there is the waiver wire, trades (OK, not many) and the fantasy that Moss actually plays like a NFL player.
No way do you want that cancer on the team
Albert is like TO, all he cares about are his stats, the guy takes 20 mil roster bonus but won’t play what the hell is that?

Ok...wild idea
We trade for Devon Hester. His stock has declined we might get him fir a bargain.
by Dfence on Jun 16, 2010 11:42 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
you think so?
Hester’s one of the Bears deep threats on offense, he’s not gonna go cheap.
We’re replacing Dominik Hixon for chrissakes. The guy was pretty good, but its not like the Giants had big expectations out of him.
Hester is an elite return man still when they use him for it. It probably costs us Manningham..and absolutely not. Manningham is a better WR while Hester is a better KR. Anyone that makes that trade needs to have their head examined.

Everyone needs to
Settle down and realize that season ending injuries are a part of football. That is why there are second and third string players. Although Dom was a solid return man, there are players on the roster who cam get the job done. We are only bloggers, not experts or coaches. It’s only June guys.

If I'm Moss
I’d be wearing out a couple of punters between now and the start of camp, perfecting my punt catching. This is a golden opportunity for him, isn’t it? I hope he looks at it that way.
I sometimes wonder if he sees the reality of his NFL career, which is that he could be thisclose to being out of the league. This could be his chance to take an important role on the team if he embraces the idea of being primarily a special teams guy.
I vote Chase Blackburn
if he ever magically got past a few guys, I can promise you he wouldn’t let himself get tackled by a kicker.
