New York Giants News & Notes: Wrapping up Rookie Minicamp
A few stories of interest in the wake of the Giants rookie minicamp:
The single roster spot the Giants had available for a tryout player went to LB Micah Johnson. Don't go buying his jersey quite yet, though - for each draft pick that the Giants sign, they're going to have to release a player, and there's a chance Johnson won't even make it to minicamp.
Ralph Vacchiano profiles 3rd round pick Chad Jones, who gave up a promising baseball career to play football.
He didn't get a contract, but I still think it's pretty cool that the Giants gave 33 year old, former Marine Brandon Crawford a tryout this weekend.
Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN New York summarizes the Giants rookie camp. Worth a read if you haven't been following too closely over the weekend.
Another story about Perry Fewell. I like what I've been hearing about him, and am cautiously optimistic that he'll be able to whip the Giants defense back into shape.
Vinny DiTrani writes about the opportunity presented to Matt Dodge and Jy Bond in the wake of Jeff Feagles' retirement. I like Dodge, but I have to admit that I'm rooting for Bond, the former Aussie Rules Football player.
A few rankings for you guys to discuss. First, the ESPN Power Rankings, which have the Giants ranked 17th in the NFL (a little low for my tastes). Second, the NY Times 5th Down Blog ranks the top 10 QB's in the NFL, and they have Eli Manning as the 8th best QB in the league. I really can't argue with that - I'm just glad someone respects him enough to even have him in the top 10. He definitely deserves it.
Matt Mosley thinks the Giants veteran defensive lineman's stock is falling, in the wake of the focus on young d-linemen in the draft. Can't say I disagree.
Finally, our favorite former Giant turned car-salesman has purchased one of the goal posts from the old Giants Stadium, and will be displaying it at his Monmouth Junction, NJ dealership. Pretty cool.

Most Important thing we might have learned??
Is that we might actually have a qualified Deensive coach and leader in Perry Fewell. This could have been the most important pick up this past off season
I'm glad they're ranked
in the lower half. Don’t really care…but its really not like they deserve any higher after the way last year ended. Really the only reason they’re that high is cuz they have #10.
Fewell is THE reason the Giants get back into shape this year, if they do. Well, him and health..health helps.
I still would like to know what’s going on with this John Henderson thing thing. That could set off a domino effect of trades/releases.
Rankings
How can Clayton think that the Giants roster hasn’t improved at all? He’s been hating on them all off-season (especially for signing Rolle).
That being said, I think they deserve to be ranked where they are too.
What's ironic
Is he ranked them the highest of the four (at 11), but he still thinks that.
Chadiha put us near the bottom.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
Just getting healthy improves the Giant's immensely.
Also having safties that can play on the field helps, last year it looked like they were playing with 9 players on the defense.

I completely agree
Based on the finish it’s hard to put them much higher. We have many many reasons to hope for more maybe even the SB. We dont REALLY know how much of the collapse was injuries, how much was Sheridan, and how much was lack of talent. My guess is all 3 with Sheridan and injuries being the biggest culprits.
I think
the Micah will make it to the next minicamp, what in about 3 weeks? Why not, we have some dead weight to unload, let’s start with Rocky…Maybe they are trying to deal Cofield,
before they sign a Henderson?
Because the media does!
There have been numerous stories about how the Giants came close to trading Cofield to New Orleans during the draft. The rumors have been flying.
Goff or Dillard? That is the question.
by I_Formation27 on May 3, 2010 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions
but they didn't
and he’s still here. i’d feel more confident if he was on the team come next season, and Rocky subtracted, and maybe henderson added.
he's on the block
and that cannot be denied. They don’t wanna pay him and could trade him.
They get Big John Henderson…its likely that Cofield is gone.
by FreeBradshaw on May 3, 2010 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions
what is Cofield asking for and what is Henderson asking for?
is the difference that big where we would jettison our best young tackle from last season for an over the hill player? i mean, regardless of what he was, how much more(or less) are we willing to pay for a guy who’s best days are behind him?
there was a reason the Giants were trying to deal him and a reason they haven’t locked him up long term.
I’d say, given Canty’s deal and Cofield’s production, he’s want something close to that.
They have Canty, drafted Big Anvil and have Jay Alford waiting in the wings.
Trading Cofield and signing Henderson is basically a financial and a future (give Joseph time to learn the ropes and Alford time to recover) thing.
If they get a deal for a 2nd for Cofield..they may just do it.
by FreeBradshaw on May 3, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
If they can get a 2
I doubt they will even think twice. I dont think they will get a 2. He is a nice player but what did Kris Jenkins, Shaun Rogers, and Marcus Stroud bring in return?
yeah he won't get a 2
i’m thinking more of a 4, at best.
And, i love the kid too, but lets not jump off the ledge for Jay Alford. all we’ve seen is potential, i don’t think he’s done enough to warrant this talk of Alford waiting in the wings.
i think we remember how he made a Brady/turf sandwich and hold him high in the light. he’s got a lot to show, especially coming off such an injury.
Take a 4th rounder for him
I thinkd bernard and maybe cofield is gone this year. Bernard will be cut and cofield might be traded if the giants can find a good trading partner. The giants really want to start joseph this year, him and dillard are the only 2 draft picks that have a chance to start this year.
Cofield
has a 3rd round tender, has not signed it yet, would be nice to get at least that much if they move him.
Hey CJ....that guy ain't my favorite Giants turned Car Salesman....
Jesse Armstead is my favorite Giants turned Car Salesman….LOL.

Sure
He is talented and would have been drafted if he didn’t run so slow at the combine and his pro day. He’s had some knee injuries and if he gets back to his old speed of play he might give everyone in camp a run for their money at MLB. I think the Giants were delighted to see him go undrafted and I’m sure he had multiple offers after the draft. The Giants need at MLB is a perfect fit for him.
http://walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2010mjohnson.php
Sounds an awful lot like...
Spikes, no? Big guy, plays run well, lays wood, plays faster than he times…
Yes but I think Micah
was still hurting from the injury so that slow 40 may be a result. I think Spikes was healthy so. But I’m not 100%.
Maybe
Walter Football had projected him to run a 4.7 40 before his real 40 time of 4.99. i think your on to something tho G56.
i don’t know much about college ball, but it seems to me that he’ll be the second or 3rd guy off the bench for his career, or maybe a special teamer. hopefully i’ll be pleasantly surprised.
I've always liked Micah better then Sun Dial anyway.
And Micah ran a 4.84 at his pro day (Sun Dial a 5.03)

Eli Manning better than Tony Romo. I hear it a lot but every time I do I just need to stop and bask in it for a little bit. Ah, okay, I’m good.
If we need to release players for our draft picks, then we need to drop seven players. Thinking of players the Giants probably find disposable at this point: Michael Johnson, Gartell Johnson, Dave Toffleson, and Sinorice Moss.
I'm with you on this year vets getting cut
After a bad season its always easier AND
A bunch of guys have never developed past backup and special teams layer, after 4 seasons of that status you are usually on thin ice. Unless you are a pro-bowl level special teamer like Tyree was.

Is it true that Tim Brown is already signed, though?
Heard he was having a good rookie camp and would like to keep him around.
I think so
he signed as a UDFA right after the draft.
some of the other guys like johnson and the 33 year old were only tryouts which is why they didn’t have contracts

Was just making sure.
I hard heard Tim signed and all, but don’t remember seeing official confirmation.
I think he’s a huge special teams pick-up, to be honest. I cannot believe he wasn’t drafted.
So can we say bye-bye
To Hixon?
+Tim Brown
- D. Hixon OR
- S. Moss
I guess in all fairness Hixon has done more than Moss ever will.
Goff or Dillard? That is the question.

Moss hopefully is gone regardless
but unless Tim Brown is an excellent KR man, Hixon’s a vet with the Giants now so he’s got some of that valuable “experience” at whatever it is.
One to look for to go is Derek Hagen. ST gunner and all around solid contributor on that, but maybe they find that somewhere else.
Maybe its Chad Jones?

i know Power Rankings mean nothing
but i just have to add my 2 cents to this weak list ESPN just compiled. in my eyes, they are WAYYY off on where we are right now as compared to other teams. A few teams i red flagged as being overranked:
- The Ravens. Yes there good. but 7th overall good? What have they shown from last season to now that moves them so high? Mason played old last season, and Boldin is a great pick up, but Stallworth is not; he’s never played up to his billing. Joe Flacco did not take any major steps from his rookie season, and maybe Anquan will help, but the jury is still out on the young fella. They’re rapidly getting old on D, altho they did somewhat address this with Kindle and Cody. And they only won 1 more game than us. not better than the giants.
- The Pats. I’m officially over the Patriots. i think that division now belongs to the Jets, and this year will really show how old the Pats are. They’re D hasn’t been good for awhile now, and there draft really didn’t impress me. Wes Welker will not be 100% for the beginning of this season, and that will be a big blow to Brady. And they have taken running back by committee to a whole new level. i understand this is a 2-3 back world we live in, but Kevin Faulk? BenJarvisGreenEllis? Maroney? Sammy Morris? Old ass Fred? none of these names scare me. i think the wall is there, and the Pats will hit it this year.
- The Falcons. Really? a team we beat last year? Matt Ryan is good, but he’s no Eli Manning. Michael Turner has to prove to me that he can stay on the field. Witherspoon is not going to rapidly improve this team that still has a suspect D. not better than us.
- Bengals. No way, they were overrated last year. Carson Palmer is a good QB, but i think alot of analysts still are in love with him over what he did in his first few seasons. he is NOT the same QB now. Chad Johnson is still there only receiving threat, altho Bryant will boost the position, i do agree there. if they expect there rookies to come in and make an immediate impact, i just dont see it happening. Ced Benson is a tough runner, so i think they’ll be as good as they were last year, but that doesn’t move them 6 spots ahead of us. not better.
- The Cards. Are you serious? Matt Leinart could either be the next Kurt Warner, or the next Ryan Leaf. We just don’t know. Add to that that they lost one half of there wonder twin receivers, and 20% of there starting D, that to me makes not for a team to watch for next season. Basically put – you can’t rank a team that high when they have a HUGE question mark at the most important position in football. We’re better.
- The Eagles? Are you fucking serious? Sorry Ed, i had to curse there to emphasize this point. Once again, a BIG ? at the MOST IMPORTANT POSITION ON THE FIELD. that’s just to start. next, alot of re-working of the roster. cutting your best back. Cutting your best backer. Trading your franchise QB. making alot of moves on draft day, some very good, some very questionable, but in the long run, you get alot of practice field players most likely in the later rounds. Now, to me, this makes the Eagles a HHUUGGEE question mark as to what they will be next year. you’ve basically blown up your old blueprint, and drawn out a new one. that can lead to great results, or a rebulding year. in my eyes, and that of alot of eagles fans, it’s the latter.
-Texans/Niners/Titans. i’ll lump them together because alot of my points are aimed at all of them. All of them are young up and coming teams with ALOT of young talent. i shiver to think what a trio of Cushing, Ryans, and a HEALTHY Mario does for the Texans. Young studs all over that team. Same with the niners, and to a lesser degree the Titans. But there still is no pedigree of winning for the 1st two teams. they may be good(read 9-7, 10-6), but they also may still be a year away. the talent is there, just not the knack to win. The Titans are a different story, with seasoned coach Jeff Fisher there. he knows how to win. But Vince Young is still an enigma to me. if he plays like the next Cunningham, or McNabb, then they will be good this year. if not, then they will get ate up in that division, because like the BEast, they eat there young(no pun intended). But i can’t discount a team with CJ in the backfield, i still think we edge them out.
if you take all of those teams out, then that would put us as 8th overall. i’m good with that. a top 10 team is what we are. for all the many analysts that are reading this right now, and i know you all hang on my every word(:)) we have almost the same roster that went 12-4 after winning a Super Bowl. We didn’t decline last year due to age, we are young on both sides of the ball. we declined due to a bad defensive gameplan. had our D made a few stops last year, we would’ve been playoff bound. we addressed our need for a new gameplan with what all are calling a good signing in Fewell. Without injury, we are an 11-5/12-4 team, easily.
but, i’m glad we are ranked low. we do our best as the dogs. we let them out, to play…
Because I'm stuck in health
I’m going to reply to this.
Ravens: Idk about 7th, but they’re going to be good. THeir OL is great and their running game is good. Flacco doesn’t need to improve too much, just enough to keep the defense honest. That’s what Boldin’s for. Stallworth is better than any receiver they had last year besides Mason.
Their defense should still be good, as long as Ed Reed is fine.
Pats: They won the division last year with a defense in transition and a hobbled Tom Brady. Everyone remembers the crappy game they played vs the Ravens, but you forget they annihilated the Jets in the second game. I’m not as high on the Jets as everyone else. I think they’ll be good, don’t get me wrong, The division belongs to no one, as either the Jets, Pats, or Dolphins could win that division. Brady got it done without Moss and Welker, he can do it again.
Falcons: Agree completely with you. Got no idea where they pulled that out of. I think they can be good, but I’d much rather face them than the panthers.
Bengals: they weren’t overrated last year, injuries took out a lot of their good players. By the time they played the Jets, they were a shell of what they were earlier in the season. Chad was the only receiving threat at the end last year, which is why Palmer looked like a nub. If their new TE is decent, they’ll be better passing wise.
Cards: Too early to say until we know anything about Leinart or Anderson. Neither inspires me as of now.
Eagles: Agree with you there. Until Kolb proves what he’s worth, you can’t rank them above us.
Agree with you on the other teams.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY

I still think were better than them however. But the point I tried to make seemed to come thru. This list is a joke.

no duh its a joke. 1-32 rankings are bull. The smart idea would be to have tiers
“Elite” “Good” “Average” “Bad” “Matt Millen Al Davis Manchild Bad” would be how I rank teams.
Do I think we could be better than all those other teams? definitely yes. Until we prove it though, it really doesn’t matter all to much.
One thing I didn’t point out, how could you say the Jets are great with Sanchez while downgrade the Ravens because Flacco didn’t show you anything? I mean I very well could be proven wrong, but I won’t understand all the sanchez kool aid until well into the season and if he does good
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
i guess i'm drinking the Green Kool Aid a little
i still think we’re better than the Jets but i can at least understand that argument from ESPN. this was a team that was within one game of the Super Bowl with a rookie at the helm. Regardless of how they got there, like we showed, its all about how you end.
As for Sanchez, yes i agree there whole season depends on how he progresses, or regresses. but i like there upgrades to the D, the Holmes move, and i think they took a back step in the run game, but it’ll still be adequate enough to be in the top 5. i do think LdT has a little left in the tank, and he’ll do alot better behind a better line. But when a team has a number one D, and a number one run game, then yeah i can at least build an argument for them. not for the Ravens, who will be good, i’m not saying they won’t. but better than us? not for my money.
The Homer in me
says we can be the best team next year.
The realist says we just as well might not.
I’m mixed about the Jets right now, I’m not going to comment on them much more until I see the unit in action.
Same with us actually too.
Never assume skill at bouncing a ball makes you smarter than the guy who built the court.
When there's a WILL there's a WAY
tl;dr
I kid, I did read. Personally I’m fine with 17th overall because this is mostly speculation. Looking at it from a perspective of what they are, the Giants are, for the most part, the same team as last year. Rolle is the only major starting from Day 1 change in regards to players, and we still have question marks at LB and RB. Personally I expect this to be a Super Bowl contending team, but if you don’t put perspective into it, you HAVE to guarantee that the additions of Rolle and Fewell turn a bust Defense into a Top 5 Defense which is a pretty big assumption. I’m content with 17th. Giants thrive when they’re not being praised.
As for the Cardinals, I agree that they have question marks, but they got their own FA additions to compensate their loses. Their defense isn’t a huge question, and their offense is still looking powerful. I agree though—without an idea of how they will play at Quarterback I can’t understand how you grade them that high.

is not smart enough to have a system. I think he has all of his plays on pieces of paper in a hat and then chooses at random during games. Unfortunately, not one of those pieces of paper has “Playaction” written on it. So, to further cement your point, Eli is not a system QB. He is a great QB because he has to play under a spotty o-coordinator.
Hey, KG, #27 should run between tackles and #44 to the outside, not vice-versa. Dumb ass. Sorry to get off subject there everyone, I just don’t know if I can deal another year with KG. Eli rocks!

From my understanding
It’s a situational pain that happens after he takes long breaks off of football, so this is just him experiencing it during his first big workout. It shouldn’t effect him once camp starts.
When you start working out after say taking a break
Or maybe start after never working out, most people will get sore or be stiff. There’s Abigail difference from being in shape and being in game shape. He hasn’t played in a few months, I would expect him to not be game ready or in peak physical condition.
However
He could be claiming now to have back issues in order to get a medical marijuana card. JPP is about to get fat paid like Kenny Powers(Eastbound and Down).
I wouldn't get to concerned about it
Lots of big dudes have this problem. Put on a little weight, workout hard, stay in the stance too long and you are going to tire out your back. That is actually science. It’s good he didn’t keep his mouth shut and actually hurt himself. When you ignore that fatigue and that “pinch”, you start using the wrong muscles around your back and run into issues. Definitely a conditioning issue. JPP is gonna be sick. don’t worry.

I agree with the top five rankings. I think that the guy(s) who formulated this list went to the corner bar after the fifth selection, had a couple of drinks and then came back and finished the list. I think I am being reasonable here when I say, despite thier terrible play at times, the Giants should have finished ahead of the Jets, Falcons,Texans, Titans, 49ers and the Ravens. Just my opinion.

I don't think this is right
The single roster spot the Giants had available for a tryout player went to LB Micah Johnson. Don’t go buying his jersey quite yet, though – for each draft pick that the Giants sign, they’re going to have to release a player, and there’s a chance Johnson won’t even make it to minicamp.
I think the rookies count in the 80 roster spots. I think the next cuts will be during training camp

from Vachianno's article:
“He is not guaranteed an invitation to training camp in August, though, since the Giants will have to release a player each time one of their seven draft picks signs.”
2009 Did Not Happen
Hmm
Maybe I understood it wrong but that just sounds weird to me.
You can sign 80 guys to the roster now. There were 58(? or something like that) from the active roster last year, so then you add the FA’s from this offseason and the draft picks and UDFAs. Maybe that puts you at 79 guys so then the last spot was open competition for the try-out rookies which Johnson won.

its all gonna be competition
cuz don’t count out Lee Campbell from Minnesota either. Dude is very much like an Antonio Pierce type UDFA.
The oddsmakers in Vegas have the Giants 22-1 the Jets 12-1...to win the SB
Of course that wil fluctuate, but it still rubs my ass the wrong way..of course as usual they have the Cowboys picked to win our division..As far as this rookie min-camp deal goes..it doesn’t mean a thing..They don’t have an engraved locker, an assigned number..nothing..and most of them won’t come june/july..
"When I was a boy and had no sense I got my pecker stuck in an electric fence..Well it curled my hair and tickled my balls, and made me shit in my overalls"
They also had the Saints to win at 20 - 1 last year
and when we won it a couple of years ago some places had us at 70 – 1 ( and the browns 30 – 1 )
I honestly forget what particular comment I was responding to..but it pretty much sound like we agree..
The odds don’t mean a thing..Some guy out here brought up an issue with JPP saying his back hurt..Well they asked him what was wrong and he answered honestly..“My back hurt”..nothing wrong with that in my book..Everyone of the younger guys out here think that these players we picked are going to step right in day one and save our world..I say bullshit..Not a single one will..Someday maybe..not from a three day mini-camp..there were two guys guys I remember in all the years of being a Giant fan that had an immediate impact..LT was one..and Simms could have been one..problem with Phil was he had a big mouth ..He proclaimed himself the starter from the hospital bed after getting his hand fixed during that Eagle game where he got his ass run-over..Well, Parcells didn’t like that and named Brunnel the starter..We all know how that ended up..You can watch every film of every game Simms played in and you’ll see him arguing with Parcells on the sidelines over the play-calling I could go on and on through the years but I think most of you guys date back to ‘84..We’ve fielded a pretty damn good football team from then on

QB rankings
Eli 8th? Not a chance. The Times puts Rodgers ahead of Eli after one good year? Don’t think so. Then Rivers who hasn’t won poo. Roethlisberger is the system QB. He too, behind Eli.
I’ve got 1. Peyton, 2. Brees, 3. Brady, 4. Favre, 5. Eli.
As for seven goodbyes, here’s five. Michael Johnson, Adam Koets, Sinorice Moss, Derek Hagen, Rocky Bernard.
Micah Johnson WILL make this team if healthy.

Goff or Dillard? That is the question.

I think Hagan will make the team
he is very good on special teams and has decent skills / size for a #6 receiver
