NFL Draft: In 4th round, Giants select Phillip Dillard, MLB, Nebraska

[UPDATE: Dillard transcript]

Well, there is your middle linebacker to compete with Jonathan Goff. Seems a little early for Dillard, but the Giants worked him out, I believe, and obviously like him.

Plus, they needed to grab an MLB before ALL of them were gone.

Here is the Prospect Profile I did on Dillard. By the way, that makes me 4-for-4. I have had profiles for you on each of the Giants' picks thus far.

Don't know if I will be near the computer for the rest of the picks today. If I am, I will post them individually.

Next year we need to get you an editor...

So you profile only the seven choices we most want….and save Reese the reading time and the decision making from among your choices ;-D

I vote for that. Because I’m tired of making typos, publishing stories, then having to go back and fix them. LOL!!

Dillard vs Goff

Finally the giants adressed that goff isn’t a starter, yet. Dillard is what this team needed because goff is not near a good starter at inside linebacker

Dillard

Really sounds like a two-down run-thumper. Nice competition for MLB now.

by Ed Valentine on Apr 24, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

That shouldn’t be a surprise the majority of Mike backers in the league are two down run stuffers. I don’t have a problem with it, Boleys your best cover LB and either Sintim or Deon Grant/Kenny Phillips/Chad Jones will be the other backer in the nickel

wish we got Kirk

Kirk morrison got traded to the jags. The giants again just sat around and didn’t try to do anything outside the box to get somebody inside the box that would have made me a lot more comfortable with our lbs

What

did Oakland get in return for him? I hate to keep saying it, but the Giants do what they do, here are my picks, wherever they are, and when our times comes, we will select.

by Great Gatsby on Apr 24, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

a bag of dorritos

Oakland gave up Kirk Morrison AND a 5th round pick for…….jags 4th round pick…
Essentially Kirk’s value in that trade equals a mid 6th round pick.

What matters

is whether Reese, TC, and Perry Fewell are comfortable. Not whether any of us are comfortable.

Okay call me an arm chair GM but...

Our linebacking core stinks, than again thats what I said about our Reciever position last year.

This guy wasn't cutting it for the Raiders

Why would we be interested in anything that comes out of that black hole?!

same stuff, different year..

We are hoping another 4th round pick blossoms into a Pro Bowl player. I hope we got it right this year. For just one draft, I’d like to see an impact LB drafted that can come in right away and do some things.

by lboogie25 on Apr 24, 2010 11:20 AM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I agree

Probably another career backup lb. I would rather have gone ol or rb. What happened to new blood on the ol Jerry was talking about???

by Giants56 on Apr 24, 2010 11:30 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don’t think Jerry Reese is hoping for anything major this year. He drafted Goff and he’s comfortable with him starting this year. There’s nothing else to it … Dillard will compete for a job and play special teams. If he beats out Goff then so be it but Reese drafted both guys and he’s confident that one of them will be the starter and one the backup.

by TheBXRepresenta on Apr 24, 2010 11:38 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I also think JR thinks Wilkinson

can compete at MLB, I’ve heard his name mentioned at MLB a few times. He’s probabbly the best pure LB and athlete compard to Goff and Blackburn, he just can’t stay healthy at all. I’d be intrigued to see if he stays healthy and competes what he can do. He played for Kawika Mitchell in 07 durning the NE game then vs TB in the playoffs and played well he’s just never got it going after that.

aside from McClain

they were all Phillip Dillard’s.

Over it.

need more

Pick this is a rich draft we need to make move to more big gap between picks

by omfGIANTS on Apr 24, 2010 11:26 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

I don’t see where there’s a big need for a linebacker on the roster. I keep hearing how we gotta get a LB to replace Pierce but with no salary cap this year there’s no Demeco Ryans, Barett Ruud, etc. This free agent class only had one MLB I’d have take before the 4th round and that was McClain. The Giants obviously agree because they didn’t draft any and passed up both Washington and Sean Lee. Its not a big deal at all plus who says one of these late rong guys or a priority free agent can’t contribute. Antonio Pierce was an undrafted free agent.

Overall impression on draft

to quote another regular poster, meh.

JPP. Hated it when it happened, mellowed upon reading Ed’s thoughtful post, back to hating it. I’ll give Ed that this was a bold pick, which is just a positive way of saying it is a risky, reach pick. Reese said you want to get on base, hit singles, doubles. No way you can say that with JPP, since he’s played all of 6 major college games. Think about it: ET goes at 14, JPP at 15. Roughly equivalent value? I’m not a talent evaluator, but geez…..

Linval Joseph: Fat guy in the middle. Not mobile outside the box, little likelihood of rush up the middle. Takes up space against run. Best we could do? Really?

Chad Jones: Finally, a pick I feel good about. Good value for R3. Tremedous hitter, athletic, great upside.

Dillard: I can’t fault Reese for focus on the D, where it should be. But, not a difference maker here. I just wonder whether he should have been a bit more aggressive to see if you could get a difference maker here. How ’bout doing what the Jets did….move up to take the SC back?

i don’t know these players like Reese and Co., and they have forgotten more about football than I know, but I find it hard to get excited about these picks.

by NorthwestFan on Apr 24, 2010 11:51 AM EDT reply actions

Listen, only time will tell.....

you have to give these players time to learn…….it might take up to 2 or 3 years for you to see results…….but don’t be surprise if you see one or two of them make a huge impact on the team this year

by Jermal on Apr 24, 2010 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions

reach

when a first or second pick is used on a player they are expected to contribute in there first year, not 2-3 years from draft time. 3rd pick i understand they are not refined enough to play but a 1-2 should be able too play and not just on special teams THIS year

by giantsscuba on Apr 24, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Point is most rookies, 1st round or not

Need to learn the playbook, the checks, audible, terminology, responsibilities, techniques proper footwork and blocking, coverage schemes. Get the point? It’s tough to get alot of playing time as a rookie. Coach ain’t letting you get any gametime, if you don’t fully get all of the above. Do you really think that Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow will make an impact this year? Will CJ Spiller do anything behind buffalos woeful Oline? Can Dez get back to form after missing pretty much the entire season. Do you honestly expect any left OT to come in and dominate? They may have done it in college, but there are lots of college teams without much competition. Oklahoma certainly will schedule a few cupcakes right? Point being is sure you dominated in college, but this is pro ball. Is Anthony Davis or Trent Williams going to stop Jared Allen, Julius Peppers, or the blitzing OLBs in Demarcus Ware or Elvis Dumervil? No they will struggle I guarentee it. There is a huge learning curve along with the rigorous physical demands of pro ball. Rookies need time to develop.

Do what the Jets did ? Since when have the little redheaded stepchild of New York football become the standard bearer for how to build a winning franchise.

give credit where credit is due

I’ve been watching Giants games since Yale Bowl days, and I dislike the Jets. Having said that, their personnel moves have been very, very good this year and last. If you give up picks to get quality (as Ernie A did to get Eli, and the Jets did last year to get Sanchez), it’s hard to criticize. Moving up to get McKnight was another bold move that wil pay off, imo.

reavis

nothing else needs to be said if the corners are good enough they make the team one dementional and easer to control. the giats did that with de, qb didnt have time to read the protection. no pass russ mayed are db and secondary look bad, and exposed them to trying to deffend 4+ seconds even reavis would have problems with that but no teams wanted to test that theory(for good reason). There d is better then ares not just in cb but there lb posions are strong too. if you can keep lb on the field for all 3 downs and they can cover and pass rush on all three downs and run stop at the same time with out changing personal you dont tip your hand on what deffence is out and there and the coverage. i dont like lb one demintional, it showes the offence before you line up what deffenc is trying to do and easer to change to another play acordingly.

That was the ugliest reply I’ve ever read in my life. Dozens of typos. One capital letter. Almost incomprehensible.

But true.

^^ linval joseph is gonna be a beast...hes real strong and will eat up blockers for our DE'S

but i dont like the pick of philip dillard.. he probably isnt going to do much…im real mad we didnt get akwasi owusu-ansah! depth at corner is always good and he is real good on special teams!

Nice Draft

If we woulda drafted Bulaga at #15 I’d be really happy but we can sit and hope for JPP!

Ed wanted to say thanks I think everybody can agree your prospect profiles really helped the casual fan keep up with all the potentials.

Cowboys getting Akwasi and Eagles stealing Ricky Sapp wasn’t good, both are having quality drafts. Help me out here one of you guys, Sapp is a 3-4 OLB right? So is he the Eagles version of Sintim?!

espn sez

This kid is interesting-Giants type of OG. Moves real well. Came to Arkansas as a FB-moves well for a OG. Did the most reps at the Combine. Powerful. Real squatty. Built like Barney Rubble.

So we're 2 for 5.

I’m sorry, I’m usually not one of those doom-and-gloom Giant “fans” but this draft is pissing me off BAD.

That said, Barney Rubble might be a nice pickup.

Rubble!

Mitch Petrus, Arkansas, 6-3, 310, 3-4: Keeping track of Petrus on and off the field was a significant chore. He was originally a walk-on tight end, then switched to offensive guard, then fullback and back to guard in 2007. Oh, and his first name is really Jonathan, but he goes by the short version of Mitchell, his middle name. When he finally settled in at guard, Petrus earned second-team all-SEC honors. But just when it seemed he’d found his way, Petrus missed the 2008 season because of an academic suspension. He returned for an outstanding season in 2009. The former 225-pound walk-on tied a combine record in the 225-pound bench press with 45 repetitions. – Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com/CBS Sports/USA TODAY
