NFL Draft: Giants select Chad Jones, S, LSU in 3rd round

Love the selection of LSU safety Chad Jones in the third round (76th pick overall).

Here is the Prospect Profile I did on him a couple of months ago. Here is Draft Countdown's profile.

Great value in the third round. Still hope the Giants find a middle linebacker in the remaining rounds, but can't complain about today's picks.

Love it, love it, love it

There are still a handful of MLB candidates available for the final day. Seems JR and the Giants are not as worried about that spot as we are.

by Ed Valentine on Apr 23, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

With the Joseph pick, MLB is a bit less of a need, anyway. A huge mass of a man like that will eat up a lot of the running.

that's the idea

John Olerud, Hall of Famer. Got a nice ring to it.

He's instantly our most athletic DT too

even at his size.

I thought he reminded me of Fred Robbins..and well…what better team to go to?

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 23, 2010 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Joseph is going to be great for us. He frees up space for either Cofield/Canty to bust through or for a DE to bust around. He’s a great tackler with big, long arms.

I love the Joseph pick. Frankly, I like him more than Price. Didn’t think he’d be available for us in the 2nd.

Ed, Jones was one of your profiles that I really really liked..I can't believe he lasted as long as he did

This is a great pick..

You

listed at 230 lbs., that Draft Countdown listed him at 220 lbs., hope he is 220 lbs.. I think 230 is too heavy in this league. Just a thought, but seems like a good pick, though he is raw.

by Great Gatsby on Apr 24, 2010 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

take a look at the transcripts on giants.com

they said that he hasn’t even really worked out much to bulk up b/c he was a 2 sport guy in college. Playing baseball prevented him from really focusing on fully preparing for football only. Giants (Marc Ross) think that he can gain 230 easy… and he looks like he has the lower body to support it, hence prob not going to affect his speed, etc.

exactly

as a pitcher, you can’t be gaining that kind of weight.

I actually forgot this dude can return punts as well.

At the combine, he checked in at 225lbs. So maybe he stays there?

This guy and Boley can be our nickel LB’s. He’s as big as Boley, and he’s a tough bastard too.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 24, 2010 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't be surprised if they do that...

he has played a lot of nickel and that would be sweet having both of them in that package…man, I can’t wait to see what “FUEL” does with everything.

He looked really good running with the ball…Punt Returner besides Hixon will be nice to have back there…and the softest hands thing is real nice to know!

Good pick

But it seems like now we’re completely overloaded at DT, DE, and Safety… While MLB was kind of ignored…

Oh well, Jamar Chaney, round 4! I love how we’ve decided on backup MLBs in every round.

Could also be a spot reliever for my Mets :)

3rd best safety in this years draft

I had berry and thomas ahead of him…..i also think his better than allen and mays pick in the 2nd round.

but he’s bigger and a better athlete.

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 23, 2010 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Reese has been consistent its like I said he’s taken three players that are a little raw but all of them are exceptional athletes that happen to be good players. What’s his logic ? Well none of these guys are gonna start this year so lets just get the best guys and see if we can refine their skills this year and develope starters for the long term.

by TheBXRepresenta on Apr 23, 2010 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

yup

and its really not like when any of these guys were on the field..the did nothing.

JPP was a terror at times. Linval was unblockable. And Chad Jones made heads roll.

Of course barring injury, I think all these guys play at least

just read that marc ross

says that Chad Jones has the best pure hands of any position player in the draft.

How true it is..who knows. But regardless..I like the idea of having a 6"3 230lbs safety with great hands..who’s athletic and agile enough to return punts.

again dont know much about the guy

but can’t complain about picking a saftey. I trust JR.

The only bad thing about this pick is I think its safe to say they have no confidence that KP will be back this year or ever. What a shame he’s a real talent. Michael Johnson played himself right off the roster in 09

by Landeta on Apr 23, 2010 9:34 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

4 Safeties

Giants always carried 4 safeties, Johnson, Butler, KP, Sucky dude from the Jags. It’s Ok to take a player out for a few plays Now we have the Quality back ups to not miss a beat. I has really nothing to do with KP’s Status

Jones..while his potential is high, is still a bit raw.

Fewell used a lot of safeties in Buffalo.

But they got 3 safeties. Deon Grant doesn’t have to do a damn thing…except be there.

now im even more excited bout grant

He experiance and field knowledge will be great tools for our other safeties to pick up. Dspecially a “raw” guy like jones

but they obviously are not counting on him at full strength. I like this pick alot, and I feel alot better then I did 24 hours ago.

my favorite pick.. he was the only guy so far that i really wanted coming into this thing. Smart move to play this season as if we’re not gonna have Phillips.

a repeat of last years defensive incompetence is now all but erased. 3 straight Defensive picks in a deep draft shows the kind of comitment to fixing that problem that I was hoping to see.

He’s all OVER the field, he hits like an effing truck and makes plays all over the place. I forgot his name and I really dont follow the draft until the day of but from what I wathed he’s exceptional an excellent athlete but a football player first. Question on our picks

Seems like all we pick are projects with huge potentials, but where are the LB’s that we need so badly or OL’s?

by Olddiehard on Apr 23, 2010 10:22 PM EDT reply actions

I'm worried too

Our O-Line started to get banged up at the end of the year (McKenzie, Seubert) and are beginning to show age and a poor push off the line of scrimmage.

I understand the whole defense thing, but we need some damn O-Lineman. Hopefully we can get Kalloway or Petrus tomorrow. The Eagles have 4 4th round picks. Impressive.

David Diehl has been a starter since he got drafted he was a 5th rounder … you can sign interior lineman off the street. The Giants have been very successful finding lineman late. Free I don't follow the draft like you

so I’m not familar with a lot of these players espcially the guys from smaller schools like East Carolina but I watch a fair amount of college football and Jones stood out in every LSU game I watched and they usually have 2 or 3 really good defensive players.

I mean he was so good I was’nt sure if he was a saftey, LB, CB, or Kick Returner when I watched their games all I know is he would do something that would make you say wow then Vern Lunquest would talk about how he pitched for LSU in the College World Series. I’m so excited about this pick. I saw a lot of Kenny Philips in college and from a fan stadpoint this guy was just as impressive maybe even more so.

Deon Grant would start first

Remember, we signed him in the offseason, too. He’s still a solid enough player & he’s start alongside Rolle if Phillips isn’t ready to go right away…which I doubt he will be. So, we’ll see a lot of Grant throughout the year.

Jones & JPP will be great to watch on Special Teams & on a few plays this next season though.

I have high hopes.

by Rev. Uniek on Apr 23, 2010 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

You never go into the draft thinking you have to draft a starter. that’s a recipe for disaster. The Giants aren’t an also ran team … yea they won 8 games last year but the defense gave up over 400 pts and had to deal with injuries at almost every level and had an inadequate and incompetent defensive coordinator. You draft long term and you pick the highest plalyer on your board or you risk getting burned picking for need. Ernie Accorsi was a good GM but he was guilty of reaching to fill needs on numerous occasions and then you end up drafting a sub par player at a position of need.

Last year Giants were weak up the middle and couldn't generate a pass rush on key plays

Seems like each of these picks addresses those issues.
