NFL Draft: Giants select Linval Joseph, DT, East Carolina

[UPDATE 9:33 PM EDT: Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin discuss the Joseph selection. ]

Linval Joseph, DT, East Carolina.

I guess maybe Jerry Reese wasn't as sold on Penn State middle linebacker Sean Lee as many here at BBV. I do love adding a defensive tackle.

And, yes, I hate you ESPN for making me sit through a commercial when we knew the pick was already in.

Here is the Prospect Profile I did on Joseph. This is earlier than I thought he would go, but I love the idea of the big run-stuffer in the middle of the defensive line.

Lets hope he turns out better than the other DT they drafted with the last name Joseph

Don’t much about him but it is an area of need so if they felt he will be better than Lee than I’m fine with it.

Still concered about MLB though casue it looks like some 3rd round pick will be competing with some very mediorce guys at MLB.

They need to make a move to get a veteran after the draft they cannont go into next year with Goff or Wilkison or Blackburn as the MLBs.

Love Joseph in the 2nd.

Will be our run stopper for years to come.

No idea why people were fixated on Lee in the 2nd. He’s a 3rd round or later pick. 2nd round is a HUGE reach.

Looking to the future.

Good move. if they do trade OSi, which I was starting to think wasn’t happening, is it for draft picks, or for draft picks and a player — like the LB from Oakland, Morrison.

by ZILLAG on Apr 23, 2010 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

Raiders

Are going to cut Morrison. We can get him.

by JVelez on Apr 23, 2010 7:22 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

nothing wrong with this pick

we’ve all talked about getting a big tackle to plug up the middle and free up our LB’s

This kid is strong and large he will at the very least chew up blockers. and at best blow up opposing RB’s. the fact that we’ve focused on D and inparticular to the line makes me pretty damn happy. That unit is the one that let us down last year and now were making a strong effort to Fix it

by Flynner on Apr 23, 2010 7:24 PM EDT reply actions

This fixation on Lee in the 2nd is honestly laughable.

He’s a solid kid with HUGE injury issues. Solid 3rd or 4th round pick, but a HUGE reach in the 2nd. There was some silly vocal minority who wanted him, but I wouldn’t say a LOT of people did.

Great front line protects the defensive backs. Let’s get LB Donald Butler of Washington in the third round.

I thought we’d take Sean Lee here, but I think they are worried about his injuries.

LB Possibility?

Now that we have a big DT to free up are LB, what are your thoughts on grabbing Brandon Spikes with our 3rd pick? Everyone talks about his speed in the 40, but football speed during game time is much different and he makes plays…. I think we need a MLB with a genuine nasty attitude, and Spikes is just that. Not sure why people talk about his issues… LT had issues..LOL

by nyfinest314 on Apr 23, 2010 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

sure…if he’s in the third. Get em

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 23, 2010 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

LT did have issues he was also the best athlete to ever play that position at the time. Spikes is slow …. I mean sllllllooooooowwww. I watch game tapes with him and it looks like its in slow motion except everyone else is moving regular speed. He’s a smart guy, explosive tackler, hes nasty but in the NFL he’s a two down MLB. I’m not big on the 40 but when O-lineman are running faster times than you then your not a pro prospect. I dont care how good you were in college.Goff is a 2 down LB so thats not much of an upgrade.

If his back is healthy Linval Joseph is a good pick. He’s athletic enough to penetrate but he can play the NT in a 4-3 or 3-4. He’s a big boy too at 328 lbs and hes surprisingly athletic . They just said he was projected as a possible 5 technique so that means he’s athletic enough to play the DE in the 3-4 I’ve read some publications that question his functional strength but I guess those 39 reps in the bench press answers my questions. 39 reps when you have 34 1/2 in arms is amazing.

The Giants just sent a MSG to our Dline

There are hungry young talented players right behind you. Step your play up the play to where we need it to be at. The Giants want to get after the QB. It is the best way to defend a passing league. Sacks are real nice, so are tackles for loss but if you can get continuos pressure, knockdowns, and hurries all game long, fresh players relentless all game, and with our rangy safety and solid corners our defense if healthy is damn good.

If we decide to go O-Line, there are good options . . .

Charles Brown
Jon Asamoah
Bruce Campbell

I’d still like LB or DB, but O-Line might be the result of the run on MLBs.

Did you see him running down field ? LOL YEAHHHHHHH BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUE

by BigBlueD on Apr 23, 2010 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

This guy has issues with his back.

So we had a rash of DTs go down last year with injuries and we pick up another one who has already had issues with a bad back? Not saying he’s horrible, but I just question if he’s going to hold up.

by themage78 on Apr 23, 2010 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

that was when he wa 370lbs

he’s 315lbs now and nothing.

Guess all we gotta do is keep him away from Morton’s Steakhouse

by FreeBradshaw on Apr 23, 2010 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions

This doesn't sound like a 2nd round pick to me:

“A tall, thickly built defensive tackle who fills out his frame well, Joseph possesses an above-average first step for his size but allows his pad level to get too high on contact. He needs to do a better job extending his arms and controlling blocks off his frame. He’s tough to move off the ball inside when run at but can be sealed from the play and struggles to disengage on contact. He isn’t overly instinctive and has a tough time finding the ball. Joseph showcases some natural power and quickness when trying to fight his way into the backfield and penetrate his way inside. He isn’t overly explosive but has the first step to threaten gaps quickly and push the pocket. But he allows himself to get too upright on his pass rush one-on-one on the inside. He possesses some natural athleticism and quickness to his game to sidestep cut blocks and eventually disengage but isn’t as strong on his bull-rush as you’d think. His high pad level takes away from his lateral quickness and ability to quickly shed blocks. Overall, he’s an athletic kid for his size, but he needs to play with a lower pad level in order to maximize his potential. He made a lot of plays vs. Conference USA competition this year but wasn’t nearly as effective vs. the better conferences on the schedule. He needed another year but has some upside. " – National Football Post, who rated him #17 on their DT list

no college player is perfect

by mclaren_is_the_best on Apr 24, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Don't read too much into that stuff

I saw him play and he was my fallback option if we didn’t get Dan Williams. There are 15 3-4 teams in the NFL. The only true NT drafted before him was Dan Williams. Joseph was going to be drafted by another team in the 2nd round if it hadn’t been the Giants. I think that teams didn’t realize that he was on their radar.

Also, a lot of this is flawed logic. He’s a 2-gap NT. Why does he need a “bull rush?” This isn’t Freeney on the edge. He wasn’t causing havoc against the better competition but he was eating up space and linemen, which helped his teammates get better sack opportunities. He’s a interior linemen. Why does he need to find the ball? He needs to learn technique. All the physical tools are there.
