Draft Day rumor mill swirling

Just a few links to keep you occupied while you try to stay busy until 7:30 p.m. ET, when the NFL Draft starts.

  • ESPN's Sal Paolantonio says the Giants are fielding calls today about Osi Umenyiora. Gee, why is that a news flash?
  • SI.com's Don Banks has the Giants taking Florida cornerback Joe Haden at 15. Intriguing, I just don't see Haden being there.
  • The arch-rival Philadelphia Eagles might be looking to move up ... way up.
  • Ralph Vacchiano and Mike Garafolo are both going with the chalk tonight. Both have the Giants taking Alabama middle linebacker Rolando McClain. I just don't know. McClain is the obvious pick, and I can't see the Giants passing on him if he gets there. I just don't see how he is going to be there.
  • Via Twitter, there was scuttlebutt (of course via Twitter) earlier today that teams are trying to steal Umenyiora from the Giants for a fifth-round pick. I think Jerry Reese is too smart for that.

Yea i read the Sal article

teams are st louis, charger, broncos, and iggles…are the ones who are “at the right price”. im guessing the giants are playing the cards until draft time..seeing if they get a offer they cant pass up. If not, Osi will remain a Giants like most of us here believe he will.

Toney does what the douglas do. And no one can do what he does b/c doing it without being Toney Douglas just doesnt make it do what it do

Osi to Eagles

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ike Davis = Albert Pujols

by Plaxico Burress on Apr 22, 2010 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed… I want nothing to do with him.

by JimmyK on Apr 22, 2010 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong… I’d take him. I just wouldn’t want to give up anything of value for him, and if the Giants are serious about trading him, it would certainly cost the Eagles more than it would cost a team like Carolina.

by JimmyK on Apr 22, 2010 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Steal Osi is right....

Fifth rounder = dial tone at the end of Reese’s line (I hope)

by Cranky50 on Apr 22, 2010 2:42 PM EDT reply actions

Ha, I was just thinking that. When a GM gets a ridiculous offer like that does he even bother rejecting it or does he just hang up the phone?

by XLII on Apr 22, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

he probably turns around an asks for a 1st in return....

just to see how they like it….

LOL

I think the only way anyone gets Osi for a fifth...

is if Reese drinks the fifth first, and then it’s darned doubtful.

very clever....

the going rate

for anybody in the NFL seems to be a 5th rounder. I would really be PO’ed if they traded him for anything less than a 3. And I agree, keep him for now.
The Giants do get rid of malcontents who keep spouting off though. So if the Rams offered their early 3rd I think he’d be history. No way we get near that top #2 of the Rams for him. They will get a king’s ransom for it as teams salivate for that first pick Friday and look at their remaining board.

by ronjohnson on Apr 22, 2010 2:58 PM EDT reply actions

Osi

has not been the model team first guy in the last year. He’s made his displeasure public a number of times and demanded a starting gig, rather than earn it in camp (after a poor year). He also fought with the DC and left the facility in a huff. None of this makes the Giants front office happy, does it?

by ronjohnson on Apr 22, 2010 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

It seems like the Giants have spoken to him and he’s been a model citizen for the past month.
And it’s a good sign, and I actually want him to stay, I’ve been saying that all along.
But it doesn’t change the fact that he’s been pretty vocal in the recent past and if he gets beaten out by Kiwi for the starting gig they know they will have a problem all over again. So if they feel they get a good trade, they might go for it and remove a potential problem down the line. That’s all I’m sayin’.

I would love to see the eagles move up to select JPP as the article suggests

and jus hope hope and hope he busts like we all think hes going to

Ike Davis = Albert Pujols

by Plaxico Burress on Apr 22, 2010 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

When I saw they were talking about moving that far up

I was thinking “oh, no – please don’t let them get Eric Berry”. When I saw that if they moved that far up, they’d take a pass rusher, and JPP was mentioned, I got down on the floor and started begging God to let that happen.

Unfortunately, much as I hate them, I don’t think the Eagles are that dumb. If they move up to 5, Eric Berry is gonna be an Eagle, and we’re gonna be in a lot of trouble for a lot of years.

And the JPP stuff is terrifying me.

by JimmyK on Apr 22, 2010 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Even as an opposing fan

I don’t wanna see that. It will either be a big strike out (no fun to have a team start to tank in your own division… except the Cowboys), and if he turns out he kills the G-Men. No win situation.

by JimmyK on Apr 22, 2010 3:08 PM EDT reply actions

Don't be proud..

..and I hate to say it, but I always feel like the eagles are wheelin and dealin and at least keeping things exciting for their fans. Im always worried of all the teams in the division it will always be the eagles, not the skin or boy, who pull off a great trade

by Plaxico Burress on Apr 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Reid and Co.

certainly deserve respect for what they’ve accomplished over the last decade.
Jerry Jones seems to have lost his way a bit since he canned the Tuna, pun intended. But he still hires good scouts and they have talent. They aren’t afraid to wheel and deal so they still make me nervous during the draft.
Shanahan is the new boy on the block. He and Snyder’s wallet might be a tough combo in the NFC East!

by ronjohnson on Apr 22, 2010 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha, yup, we definitely wheel and deal. Almost no players left from the 2004 Super Bowl team.

It would almost certainly include the 24 and 37, and maybe a player or 2.

by JimmyK on Apr 22, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

It's amazing, Dawk

When you think about how similar these two franchises really are. In terms of how they are run, the success they have had, the players/positions of interest they seem to look at each year. Oh, there is that little Super Bowl advantage we have. Other than that, though, very similar.

IF AT 15!

If Haden is there and Earl Thomas is there we better take Earl Thomas! Thomas can play Slot CB and Safety! hes faster and way more versatile then Joe Haden hands down!

by Sam Rincon on Apr 22, 2010 3:20 PM EDT reply actions

It appears that reality has decended upon the 2010 Draft.

Both RV and MG think McClain will be there at #15 and Gil Brandt has dropped Romac to the second tier(11-20) in his top 100. MLB’s very rarely go too high due to position value, especially if you are looking for an ILB in a 3-4, which is the system on the teams where most “experts” had him going.

Ok, now there’s some clarity amongst all the smoke.

that series is like a Mets vs. Red Sox series

or a Cowboys vs. Eagles.

I hate the Devils and the Flyers. I enjoy a good underdog..and if they didn’t wear those ugly uniforms..I like the players on the Flyers (Carcillo reminds me of Avery when he was off his leash).

But I hope the Flyers get gangbanged by the Caps in the 2nd round.

San diego & Denver Hmmm

So my idea a while back about sending him to a 34 team like the Chiefs for Dorsey wasnt as silly as some said it was, I think he would be a fine 34 OLB and i think its better for him because he will be facing alot more TE’s and HB’s as oppose to T.

LT?? who

if you mean Lawrence Taylor, Hell yeah he did.
and 34 OLB’s go up against blocking TE’s and RB’s way more than 43 ends….. Osi jokes with Ware all the time, saying if Ware was in a 43 he wouldn have as many sacks….LOL sounds like a little jealousy to me

They had to put T’s on them back then because LT was just running over HB’s and TE’s.

and they still put T’s on them now in 2010.

Same Old Giants

Per the table on the NFL Nation Blog at espn.com the Giants are the only team out of 32 with exactly the seven picks they started with. Every other team has done trades or gotten compensatory picks.

That’s neither good nor bad, it’s just the Giants.

by roguetrader on Apr 22, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

And

I don’t have a problem with that at all. Sometimes I think all the moving around is a mistake.

by Ed Valentine on Apr 22, 2010 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't disagree

Just thought it was interesting and typical of the way they do things. I can’t even remember the last guy before Shockey who we traded for a relatively high draft choice. The Osi thing is unusual drama for us.

by roguetrader on Apr 22, 2010 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

interesting...

I mean, last year, didn’t exactly help us too much..tho I think we got a good haul.

What’s gonna happen when the Giants have the best draft out of all of them?
