Linebacker Shuffle

Man in the middle

Star-divide

The Giants have a dilemma that they will have to address very soon. They need a middle line backer, this franchise has a rich history when it comes to linebackers but in the past few years we have had some solid but low impact guys at our linebacker positions. Antonio Pierce was a great leader but his mind was more valuable than his physical prescence especially in the last yr or two. The giants have since released the well liked linebacker and are looking toward the future, who will take over the most important spot on our defense?. What would you do if you were Jerry Reese as far as our backer positions go.

There are several options. You can stay in house and and stick with Goff or Kehl, we can also use the draft or free agency and bring in someone that will make an impact in the middle. This is one position that needs a long term fix, what would be your chess moves and why? also would you keep boley and sintim as your Sam an Wil backers?

I applaud Jerry Reese for his scouting ability and his aggressiveness in FA this year and last year whether or not they prouduced or not is another story. The one move that I always question since he has been in control (No not C.C. Brown) was him not doing what it takes to retain Kawika Mitchell, had he been here, I would just say slide him to MLB and I would have no issues with it but just some food for thought.

Kawika Mitchell

Was a beast and we missed him dearly that’s for sure.. I remember talking with my friends about this move and we didn’t think Clark would be half the man Mitchell was.. Bad move for sure, we need to make the right decisions this year regarding MLB, I don’t know what’s right but whatever we do just needs to work.

All's Well that Fewell

Kawika Mitchell wanted too much money

and well…we really didn’t need him in 2008, and in 2009….he would’ve fit right in with the rest of them, as he was injured for most of the season.

As for the LB’s, I keep Sintim and Boley at SLB and WLB. I get Goff competition by way of Draft.

Rolo McClain round 1
S Weatherspoon 1
Darryl Washington 2
Jamar Chaney 2-3
Pat Angerer 3-4
Sean Lee 4-5
..and if they insist on waiting this long in the draft, Donald Butler or Phillip Dillard 5

No Spikes…I don’t want a slow poke…I don’t care if he’s a “leader”, Perry Fewell can coach..if we want a slow poke, put Fewell in as the MLB.

I agree with most of your assessment

I would go weatherspoon over Mcclain his career stats are astonishing, dont know why he isnt ranked higher. IMO spikes is what i call combine slow, he is not a track star but when he has pads on he flies around, you dnt start at MLB on the gators if you PLAY slow so i would grab spikes if the timing was right.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed on spikes...

But Fewell looks like he can play, player/coach maybe get him to be MLB in the Tampa 2???? Now that would be a leader…

Channing Crowder was good on the Gators too.

He’s molasses too, only any decent cuz he’s in a 3-4 as a ILB.

Spikes plays slow and runs slow. I don’t want him when there’s more athletic options.

I dunno about that.

We’ll see after their pro days.

I’m betting Spikes is 4.90-4.95

McClain around 4.65 – 4.7

Seriously ? 4.95?

You really think he is as slow as Gerald McCoy….?

Yes.

That is unlikely

epsecially for an athlete who played on a successful defense and who weighed in at 249

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 9, 2010 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

its pointless....

Free will never like Spikes, he could run a 40 time faster then McClain and he will still say he was slower then McClain.

Pierce was a “slow poke”

by NJDuke on Mar 10, 2010 9:03 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

Free is anti spikes and spikes does play fast, hes the only person even those on tv say he plays faster than he will run at combine, spikes is an asset and he gives more effort than Mcclain

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 10, 2010 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

I would

Give Goff a shot, while drafting a LB in the 2nd round or later for competition, if Rolo isn’t available.

Oh Blue Gates

First para Giants with a small g

Second para – Boley and Sintim spelt without a capital, Also spelt with a small a after a question mark, yr instead of year.

Ed will be calling you in for detention…..

Don't worry

G Fan, I'm not that mean

You know I went to Catholic school, and you will still never see me whacking people across the knuckles with a ruler (which I have seen done by “loving” nuns). I love the use of FanPosts, as I said in my earlier post. Just do your best, gang. And I know now you guys are going to kill me every time I make a mistake. LOL!!

As was I

it was just ironic that the first fanpost contained all the points that Ed asked us to look at.

Weatherspoon gives the most options.

I think you have to take Weatherspoon at #15. I wouldn’t risk trading down and hoping he’d be there. Other teams like the Eagles are going to want this guy too. I’d rather have Weatherspoon than McClain because I think he gives us more options. McClain can play MLB and that is about it. Weatherspoon could play any of the three spots. He’s fast enough to play will, strong enough to play SAM, and smart enough to play Mike. I say draft Weatherspoon. Best case scenario he takes over the reigns as MLB day one. Worst case scenario he plays the roll of reserve LB because he can spell a guy at any spot, and he contributes to special teams. Somewhere in the middle scenario he takes over at SAM and we can use Sintim as a DE pass rusher.

I think Boley is good at the Will. Our main issues are Mike and SAM. We don’t have a true blue starter at either spot, just a couple kids with some ‘potential’. I actually am most worried about SAM. I was never thrilled with Sintim because he is a 34 OLB not a 43 SAM. That’s why I don’t get mock drafts listing Sergio Kindle as our guy. He’s just another 34 OLB.

by bigblue777 on Mar 9, 2010 11:01 AM EST reply actions

I agree

I dont get the kindle thing at all unless theythink they can slide sintim inside or whatever but the kindle thing probably comes from people who have no idea whos on the giants roster.

as for weatherspoon i would take him before the eagles or saints. He had
more than 400 tackles, 43.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and 18 passes defensed in his career. if that doesnt fit well in any scheme, I dnt know what will

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 11:05 AM EST reply actions

I like the Kindle idea if Coughlin and Fewell are certain that Sintim can take the role of MLB. Now I’m not so sure of that because that takes experience at the position which he wasn’t much on the field last year. If he’s capable of taking the role, I wouldn’t mind them taking Kindle because it would add much more speed to the LB core. I just don’t think he’s very good against the run which we already have too many problems with.

by ny12giants92 on Mar 9, 2010 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

Sintim

The only thing holding him back is can he play in space when necessary but from hearing him talk he is determined and passionate about making an impact…he said he will use the offseason to get bigger, stronger and faster, last i checked he is already a specimen so if he can mentally grasp mike backer that would be great. If and only if he could i would then take the kindle kid or slide kiwi back to sam and take Derrick morgan with 15th overall pick. just another scenario………. i do think TC & JR are contimplating the sintim to mike thing tho!

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

Sintim at MLB?

What makes you think Sintim could play MLB? He played 34 OLB in college and played a mix of DE and SAM for us last year. None of that translates well into being able to man the MLB spot.

by bigblue777 on Mar 9, 2010 11:22 AM EST up reply actions

oooohh!!

When Drafted TC and JR said he can possible play multiple linebacker spots, i dnt know what they meant but they see him everyday so maybe they know something i dont

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

I didn't see it on gameday

He must play different in practice than games because I saw nothing out of Sintim that would lead me to believe he can man the middle. He looked most impressive when he stuffed his hand in the dirt and rushed the passer. That to me makes him more suited for DE or situational rushing LB than true LB. He didn’t look good to me when he played standing up, moving in space, or reading and reacting to the play. All things you have to be able to do to play MLB or even a true SAM (some schemes have the SAM on the line most of the time, but I don’t think that is Fewell’s style). I’d love to be wrong and have him be a better player than I saw, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

by bigblue777 on Mar 9, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

I concur

maybe he will look more fluid this year, it was a change from what he is used to, he will probably play as an on the line sam tho, that fits his skill set

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 1:08 PM EST up reply actions

Putting Sintim at MLB

Would be akin to putting Boss at WR or Snee at LT

by mclaren_is_the_best on Mar 9, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

I think he’s better than what we’ve seen on Sundays. I have far more faith in JR than just judging on Sintim from a couple of downs. Especially since he was injured for part of the season. I’m not saying that he will be at MLB but I think it could be possible in the future. I’d prefer like Blue Gates said. Take Morgan if available and move Kiwi back to SAM. I don’t see that happening however. I don’t know if the Giants want to mess with his progression anymore or if he even wants to be there. I think a ultimate scenario if we draft a DE would be to move Tuck back to the inside and have Kiwi and Osi starting at the ends, but that would make us pretty bad against the run

by ny12giants92 on Mar 9, 2010 4:07 PM EST up reply actions

I still like spikes too tho

We are not playing in an all out Tampa Two, that was dick jauron’s style. I think we will be more like sean Mcdermots eagles, alot of man on the outside with a single high safety…….. we have man cover CB’s, as well as safeties who can man cover now so we dnt need to play Tampa Two, there will be some of that scheme involved like every defense has but i think we will be more fire zone or man covergae so that we can utilize our backer’s blitzing ability which they dont do in a true tampa two.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions

I agree with what you're saying

There’s no doubt in my mind that we should draft McClain with our 1st round pick. I do feel we need some more depth at OLB and I’ve seen prospects such as Daryl Washington and Navorro Bowman (who could potentially play will in a 4-3) mocked as low as the 3/4th round which would be great value. Of the free agents available, I think Cato June could be worth a look at as a backup, to add some skill in coverage on passing downs.

by BigBlueUK on Mar 9, 2010 11:23 AM EST reply actions

Where's Weatherspoon's experience as an MLB?

The only true experience I remember him having was at the Senior Bowl. That doesn’t count.

by GhostDini on Mar 9, 2010 12:21 PM EST reply actions

Why doesn't it?

He has the skillset that translates perfectly. What a guy plays in college and the pros isn’t always a one for one. Some transitions make sense some don’t. He showed in the senior bowl he can play Mike, and at Mizzou he may not have lined up in the middle but he had the play calling responsibility generally assigned to the Mike.

by bigblue777 on Mar 9, 2010 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Why not?

He excelled against a hight competition level and he read his keys perfectly from the mike position, i think it would be a seamless transition to that spot for him

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!

by Blue Gates on Mar 9, 2010 1:06 PM EST reply actions

I think they will stay in house...

and draft a middle linebacker at some point in the draft. But they were raving about Goff last year during training camp, I think they want to give him a shot at it.

by NJDuke on Mar 10, 2010 9:06 AM EST reply actions

I have no issue with that

But i still would take spoon if available or move up in 2nd for spikes those two are better than Goff is right now.
i like goff alot but i would keep him on special teams and some nickle situations.

But dont tell em i told you that !!!!!
