Why the Giants Shouldn't Take Brian Price
Take a look at the 4 mock drafts cited in today's Mocking the Draft that had us taking Price. One by one:
In the Joe Weisen draft, the Giants take Price with Trent Williams on the board
In the Ben Standig draft, the Giants take Price with Derrick Morgan and Brian Bulaga on the board
In the Randall Weida draft, the Giants take Price with Derrick Morgan, Trent Williams, Rolando McClain (??!! I mean, this guy has the Steelers drafting McClain to pair with Timmons - what, does he think Farrior is going to the bench??), and CJ Spiller on the board.
In the Mocking the Draft draft, the Giants take Price with Brian Bulaga and Trent Williams on the board. When the Giants pick in Round 2, they could get DTs such as Arthur Jones, Lamarr Houston, Tyson Alualu or others.
I think there are two takeaways from this. One is that the reason the Giants shouldn't take Brian Price is because he simply isn't the 15th best player in the draft. No matter how you play the permutations, there will almost always be a choice better suited to the Giants than Price, despite the legit need at DT. Secondly, Randall Weida's drafts probably don't deserve to be cited in Mock Draft Monday!!

Randall Weida must be a Steelers fan
getting a great LB like McClain is what the Steelers do
Master of the squeegee
cant be
he would then know that the steelers dont start rookies unless absolutly necesary so mclain would not be sendiing farrior to he bench this season

Farrior’s not getting younger. Draft isn’t for immediate impact anyway..so that doesn’t matter.
Harrison, McClain, Timmons, Woodley? The later 3 for the next 6-8 years?
I’d send Goodell cow turds for rigging the draft for doing that

Its true
After I wrote this, I looked up Farrior and realized he is 35 and apparently his play slipped last year – I guess he would be a nice fit for the Steelers. Having said that, I’ll eat my shoes if he is available at #18 and nothing has changed (i.e. major injury) between now and the draft
I don't like Brian Price either
A rotational tackle isn’t worth 15th overall IMO. Brian Price has a great first-step and can make plays in the back-field 1/3 of the time, but he can also be successfully run at or taken out of a play 2/3rds of the time. We need a 2-down DT who can take on blockers and distrupt the pocket. Unfortunately, our genius of a GM signed Canty to a 42 million dollar deal, so forget drafting a DT for a couple of years now. We have Alford and Bernard to come in on obvious passing situations, which I feel is not enough. Our genius of a GM also signed Benard last season, so maybe we won’t even draft a DT between rounds 2-4.
Ugh, why did we go ahead and had to be the biggest free agent spenders last year? That better be the last time Reese does something like that. It’s all about draft & coaching in the NFL
We don't NEED a 2-down DT
we managed just fine without a fat ass DT for the last few years…. It’s not like we had the worst run defense in the league or anything

Fred Rob was our Fat ass DT
Then he got old and injured and then we couldnt do anything on D
how do Canty’s and Bernard’s contracts have anything to do with how we draft? There’s no salary cap and no punishments for cutting contracts short. If JR wanted to draft a DT in the 1st round, there’s nothing stopping him from letting Bernard go.
Plus, obvious passing situations would be alford or canty along with our 3 main DE’s, not the 31-year old nose tackle…
What’s wrong with spending in free agency? There are plenty of established players that changed teams and still performed (Plax, McKenzie). We just had bad luck with injuries all around. It’s not like our draft picks were doing so hot either.
Man, that’s very unlikely the Giants will release Brian Price and have Canty as the back-up. What’s wrong with being the biggest spenders in free agency? Last year is what’s wrong. We have lucked out with injuries sure, but it’s not like boley or canty were playing at a pro-bowl level when they were in the line-up. It’s just unlikely the giants will let these guys go after one year. we may not draft a DT round 1 because of it. but thats just my opinion
HAPPY THAT GIANT FANS AREN'T GM'S
If most giant fans were general managers the team would be like the raiders, in last place or in the bottom or always on the top of the draft order. To be successful in the nfl, you need a strong offensive line and a strong defensive line, one to protect the quarterback and the other to chase down and get to the quarterback. The giants don’t have any real good dt on their team and robbins just sign with another team. The giants need a pass rushing dt and that’s what price is, you also need a good dt and not just anyone can clog the lane to stop the running backs, how do you think mlb get all those tackles, duh?
Not really
I think that what separates better NFL GMs from fan armchair GMs is that they know that they don’t “need” anything besides a good QB. Having a good pass-rushing DT is great – but that doesn’t mean that they should draft Brian Price when there are better players available. If the team is really in love with Price maybe they can trade down a few picks to nab him.
GOOD IDEA BUT:
Not a bad idea but, what if a team really has that player high on their draft board, trading down would hurt their chances of getting the player they really want or maybe the best player available.
DT isn't a big need
Really, we have 4 DTs on the roster. We had issues last year because two were hurt most of the season. Coefield will start at NT and Canty at the 3 tech. Alford and Bernard are the reserves. If you bring in another DT he will either be added as a rotational or expected to beat out one of the reserves for their spot. You don’t burn a 1st rnd pick for that. We may get a DT in this draft, but I’d like to see Jerry wait until a later round for that. I don’t think we should be looking at DT any sooner than the 3rd (unless there is some amazing prospect that slipped to us in the second).
