Free Agency Updates: Robbins, Carr going, going ...

Almost gone. At least, that was the situation when I went to bed Saturday night.

Ahh, the ups and downs of free agency. Friday night and Saturday our New York Giants celebrated the signing of free-agent safety Antrel Rolle.

Today the Giants are looking at losing a couple of players.

  • Backup quarterback David Carr could be heading to the San Francisco 49ers, where, after trashing Carr the other day, linebacker Patrick Willis will have some 'splaining to do. Carr is a guy whose loss may not seem significant, as long as Eli Manning is healthy. The Giants don't really want to have to replace him, though.
  • Defensive tackle Fred Robbins is apparently heading to St. Louis to join ex-Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. You could call it a big loss, but only because the 325-pound Robbins is a very large man. There isn't much gas left in Robbins' tank, and there really wasn't a place for him in New York anymore. So, that move is no big deal.

I'd say

It’s a good move, Giants and Eagles are pretty successful teams, Rams haven’t been for a while.

When did Robbins become washed up?

Obviously he didn’t have a great year last year, then again NOBODY on the defense had a good year last year. I’ve felt that Robbins has been their best interior lineman by far since he’s come to the team. He always had a knack for knocking balls down at the line of scrimmage. Also, is it just me or did he block about five PATs during his time as a Giant?

The great depth on the defensive line that we all loved just about this time last year feels like a distant memory. Thanks and good luck, Fred.

With Robbins gone

It looks like a DT will be the round 1 pick for the gents.. Unless mclain falls to us of course

Please Mets.. over .500 this year? Please??

After...

He had microfracture surgery on his knee, it’s hard enough for a running back or a safety for example to come back, but being in your mid 30’s. and weighing whatever over 300 lbs….
You could see it last year, absolutely no push at all, but they did get a lot of value from him as a player…

I'm going to miss Robbins

I met his Family at the Tampa playoff game in 07-08, They were all about his size too, even the women, good people.

Our lack of depth in this area

is going to make our choices on DL that much more important. I don’t think Robbins sucked any more than Osi last year.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

difference is...

Big freds contract was up, he’s on the wrong side of 30, injured and there really is no upside to keeping him.

Anyhow..I still LMAO at our 'hammered' Plax..but

We knew we were going to lose a few players..I think we have ressurected our secondary…and we knew DT would have to be a focal need either FA or draft..I have to stop here because I can’t stop laughing at Plaxs last post..Damn now that’s funny..I don’t care who you are that ‘I love you’ post ..damn I’ll be laughing all day now.

I hope FredRobb has success there

I dunno if he’s washed up, but maybe just a change of scenery is what he needs?

I think that’s why they’re keeping Rocky Bernard, so DT still isn’t a “need” for the Gints, but I’d like to get a porker.

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 7, 2010 7:54 AM EST reply actions

Now...

They will probably keep Rocky? One thing I personally question though is how did “they” manage to keep his inury quiet all season, and Jacobs injury quiet until about week 16
(right before the Carolina game)…with all the media venues these days?
I mean we heard Seubert was playing hurt early in the season? It makes me ponder that a bit?

by Great Gatsby on Mar 7, 2010 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

Oh I’ve been pondering throughout the offseason about this BS.

If they announced that Jake and Rocky were hurt…at the very least I wouldn’t have been as pissed off about their crappy play this season.

Cuz uh…being injured is a good excuse for not playing well, don’t ya think?

The injury list is the most muddied and abused rule in the game

Nobody wants to tip their hand unless a player is out for a game. Actually, sometimes misleading info is given(ala Belecheat, Parcells, et al)

by sunlion333 on Mar 7, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

I guess, like Free,

I’ve been questioning the accuracy and honesty (or lack thereof) about these “injuries”….but it’s terrible if one plays so miserably that one has to pull and use the injury card.

The needle on the BS meter has snapped.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

by GAgiantfan on Mar 7, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Let's just say

a team is honest about all their injuries. In the Giants case, last year, everybody knew about the injuries Robbins and Cofield were recovering from and Canty’s camp injury was widely reported. Add to the news that the only DT on the roster that isn’t known to have injuries has a torn labrum in his shoulder and teams would be game planning to shove it up our gut on 60% of the plays.

Get what I’m saying? There is a little strategy in injury reporting.

What he needs

is to have 25-year-old knees again. Love FredRob, but his best days are gone. He might help the Rams, though, as a rotational guy.

by Ed Valentine on Mar 7, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

For the next backup QB

the Giants should pick up Troy Smith from the Ravens. Personally id like to see some old Buckeyes on the squad, but I think it would be an interesting chance in QB style.

Troy Smith would be a good pickup. Kinda small, but David Carr kinda sucked.

He’s a backup, as long as he’s cheap and doesn’t want to play other then garbage time…..who cares.

Carr kinda sucked?

I don’t think so Free. He never had much playing time as a Giant, but as out back-up I trusted him fully. He seemed to become more comfortable throughout his first pre-season with us and didn’t look aweful when he relieved Eli against the Vikings two years ago.

I’m not saying he is going to be a great or good starter in the NFL again, but I don’t know if someone can say he kinda sucked

by nicnyg on Mar 7, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

He’s a backup, yes he was OK. I was really referring to his time elsewhere in which he sucked.

Lets not look at him as our Matt Schaub.

Master of the squeegee

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 7, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I don't see him as our Matt Schaub

I just wouldn’t really panic if Eli went down and Carr had to take over. I want to see him get a shot somewhere. I hope he doesn’t sign with San Fran I don’t see him fitting there. Maybe Arizona will pick him up, I’d love to be Carr with those weapons around me.

Rhodes to AZ!

Looks like AZ made up for losing Rolle by trading for Kerry Rhodes…. kinda makes me wonder if we shouldn’t have tried that route to begin with….

It was nice, but no internet was kind of a drag…I missed this site. I’m not even hammered but I feel ya Plax, this site inspires some good old man love. Wait, that didn’t come out right. Sounds kind of gross, not that there’s anything wrong with that…Anyway, you guys are awesome and make this terrible time between the Giants and Yankees much more bearable…Now, do we get any compensation for losing Carr or Robbins? Probably not, but I was just wondering…

by Aceholioo on Mar 7, 2010 10:16 AM EST reply actions

I liked Carr a lot

How many teams have a guy who if the QB went down when your team was down a score, you’d say you still had a shot to win the game.

i too will miss fred rob

last season was not his best but as many have pointed out, last season was bad for our defensive players across the board. and to be honest, the D, and especially the D line, have been off a bit since strahan retired.

by wangstu13 on Mar 7, 2010 12:53 PM EST reply actions

Fred Robbins and Carr

I’m not too concerned about this. Robbins gave us some good seasons. We most likely go OT or DT in the 1st now. I’m actually really warming up to beefing up our line. I want a strong running game. Balance is key.

by wangstu13 on Mar 7, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

Spiller?

what is your damn fascination with spiller? havn’t you seen the trend in the nfl the last couple of years of waiting till the mid rounds to pick up a running back. do you honestly think reese is going to blow the 15th pick in the draft on a running back?

by EDDIE MURPHY on Mar 7, 2010 3:47 PM EST reply actions

I haven't been posting alot today..but CJ Spiller would be a good grab..

I had to go on a search and rescue mission..My dim-wit Son took the boat out..I said I don’t think there is enough gas in it..He said oh yes there is Dad we didn’t use the tank up…Well there wasn’t..and he ran out of gas..So I just got back from getting gas and finding him to get the boat some fuel and get them home..Don’t ever draft Tyler Dolson as a Giant..I just made a 40 mile round-trip getting him gas to get the boat home and docked..I told him he would be a perfect receiver for the Raiders in a few years..The dummy.

How about the Giants sign Peyton Manning as their new backup QB?

Could you imagine – Eli and Peyton on the same team?

by MyronBales on Mar 7, 2010 8:42 PM EST reply actions

They could use a 2 QB shotgun set

Peyton could yell and scream out signals, Eli could point.

Snap it to Peyton, he tells Eli who to throw to, Eli does it.

Rumor has it Peyton’s good punter too (wouldn’t know it…the Colts don’t punt)

by FreeBradshaw on Mar 7, 2010 8:44 PM EST reply actions

That's why he's a good punter..they don't punt..

That would be a mind-boggling rip seeing Peyton and Eli on the field together..One is pointing, the other barking check-offs, all the way down to 1 second on the play clock..We’d all be alcoholics with Marty Feldman’s eyeballs..

Well it is official..good for David..

I knew Singletary didn’t invite him out there to show him the locker room and ‘moon’ him..He’s got his second chance and I wish him success, except when we play the 49-ers…Now I think we need to go after Delhomme..He’d be a perfect back-up..He’s not washed up, and if you watched the Hurney/Fox and his interviews..He brings something special to the locker room..a passion for the game…Shit he’d play football for nothing.

When I review the NFC East...from an FA perspective

We picked up Rolle which if hopefully paired with a healthy Phillips turns our secondary into a formidable unit.
Dallas who needs OL and Secondary help has done nothing.
Washington just cleaned house, so they are going through major re-build.
The Eagles have also cleaned house a bit and are having inside arguments about keeping or trading McNabb.
When I do the above math and factor in a successful hopefully draft..and make sure guys don’t get hurt and stay healthy..To me that all adds up to us winning the division.
Now we need to still address DT and maybe start thinking about the OL..as Far as MLB goes in my opinion, I think Goff has some games under his belt now and will be a pleasant surprise this year for us..so I am not all amped up about the MLB like alot of folks out here are..I think our team made some excellent coaching changes and have also addressed training methods and a key flaw in our pass defense..Now we only need run stuffers and we will be a very very good team…the ‘Glass’ is starting to look half full..not half empty..
